Discussion and Shiitake managing to pick apart my entire plot in #rubyquest on IRC.

Item functions found in previous threads and soon the wiki page.))

With the knowledge of Coyote's madness and the betrayal of Shi, we move towards our goal of recovering Raven's faith. Myself and Ella are truly together, and, barring a medical examination in the near future determining otherwise, having children. Several new additions to the party have come forth, but with the gain of allies, comes the loss of some of my most useful items.

But right now the most important thing is the matter of an undead at the window to my bath.

"Can this wait until after my bath is finished?" I ask, as Ella slides behind me and picks up her spear.

The creature blinks, then laughs aloud.
"Sure, sure. Take yer time." it says, laughing. It passes one hand in front of its face and vanishes from sight.

Though you shouldn't take too long.

We clean one another, emerging from the bath and drying each other gently. I change into my sleep clothes, whereas she simply puts on my cloak and drapes her body with it. We make our way to our room and shut the door behind us.

"I hope I'm not being inconvenient." the spectre says as he shows up again. "Allow me to introduce myself: Jeremiah Anteres, majordomo to Entropy. I have been sent to send a message.... and to assist you in your further endeavours."

"So what is the warning?"
"That you aren't uunderstanding the implications of your power, especially in regards to the Watch and your items in general." he says. "The warning is twofold." he says. "Would you rather hear the specific or general warning first?"

"First thing: You've got a lot of magical power in one place. If you were to get the links and cane back, you'd have enough power to conquer the planet by yourself, even the Dark Continent. Entropy's pretty cool with this, so long as you keep a good eye on it all. You're our custodian, so to speak. So I think you know why this warning was sent."

"And the watch?"

"Entropy thought you would get this sooner, but... Okay, let's say you've got a cat, a box, and a fragile bottle of poison. Now, you put the cat and the poison into the box. Assuming you have normal vision, you can't tell how the cat is doing, right?"

"I suppose..."

"No, here's the thing. If nobody can observe the cat, then nobody knows what condition it's in. Therefore, the cat could be either alive, or dead. Once you open the box, you eleminate the possibility that isn't true. One could almost say you kill the cat by looking at it. Do you see where I'm going with this?"

"Not... really. It's more like, no one is really fated to die at any certain point. They just... will. By using the watch. you're defining the moments that they are at risk." he shrugs.

Okay. I think I get it.
If we don't use the watch, then any moment someone may be at risk is undefined. It may or may not even happen.
But if we use the watch, then all the moments they are at risk become defined.
They WILL happen, unless something stops them. Directly or inadvertently.

The huge amount of stored stuff propels me backwards over the line as Erhgal leaps over it.

He lands heavily in the crater I made, a heat haze washing over him.

INNER FIRES!
The ground around him begins to blacken, crack, and glass as he slams into the remainder of the central column, sweeping with his hammer. He doesn't blow them away: the strength he swings with is so great that the hammer is almost like a wide blade, hewing through hide armor and flesh and bone.

The remaining columns meet with the ogres, who repel them handily, with backup from the Seerans and the kobold, who sits in a perch she had wrought before the battle at the upper lip of the cave entrance.

Cunning Disarmament x 20

I lean in between Jax and Ishkal and let loose a torrent of axes and swords and maces, blowing away a third of a column. I look up at Erhgal as he runs back towards us a way, then leans forward, rearing back the hammer.

FURY'S HAMMER!

And suddenly, from the head of the hammer and out, an extension apprears, ten times longer and bigger than his own hammer, made of fire and smoke. And this is what he slams down on the last of the central column.

It does not crush them, but they all light ablaze, And then he pulls out three bottles.
"OI! KOBOLD!" and throws them into the air over the rightmost column, in a line. I can see wisps of heat haze under them as they line up.

And a bolt flies through them, shattering them and dousing a good half of the column in...

Alcohol?

Well, yes, but why...

Oh.

One of the blazing mongrels runs into the right column.

190 PROOF OF STRENGTH!
There's a loud whoomph, and the whole column nearly catches ablaze. Then Erhgal laughs and clenches his fist.

FURY'S CRUSHING FIST!

The fire literally freezes in place. And then it shifts... and rushes towards the center of the burning mass, dragging the mongrels with it, until...

I'm a doctor of several thousand years and even I have to look away while Erhgal laughs.

"No one here can take me! Hahahah!"

Rolling forward, I use the momentum to drive both daggers into its left leg, just under the knee joint, jumping to one side as the arms move in, spines emerging on the inside of the arms.

Its blood dribbles along grooves in the floor and into a drain near where I land as the creature roars in anger.

Only for Utkal to step aside and bring the hammer down hard enough to crush... and sever the limb!
It roars in agony and rage, sending out the other limb, but Utkal knocks it aside, steps forth, and with a roar, slams his fist into the creature's belly, ripping out endtrails.

He steps away as the creature burbles out a moan of death, blood pouring from the wounds and its mouth as it falls to the ground, soon encased in a stone cocoon once more.

A large chapel. No, a huge one. Not even I(she) could leap into the rafters. At least, not until I'm older... It is very quiet. I like the quiet. It lets me think. My spear sits beside me, too big for me to use properly yet, almost too big to lift. it's twice as tall as I am!

Evident time passes in the dream. Ella is taller, stronger.

"What do you mean she's the new praetor?!"
"Just that, Ella. She's in charge now." my brother says with a sigh. "Look, everyone knows it's just politics."
"E-even so! She can't even fight properly! I-if I could just declare a duel..."
"You will not, Ella!" he says sternly. "Edgar has decided. She's the Praetor, and he is, after all, Lord General."
"B-but..."
"We cannot have everything we want, Ella."
The image begins to blur.
"B-but I... I l-loved..."
"I know. I'm sure he'll come around sooner or later."

I've heard of Edgar. His title is Edgar the Steel-hearted. He's fairly well-known among the human populace for fending off an insane dragon from Rivermeet some ten years ago. He's said to have fine, golden hair and fiery, passionate eyes.

Well, that's what the ladies say.

As for the Eleanor, I cannot recall any information. However, Praetor is a fairly high divine rank. I'll ask Ella later in the most roundabout way. If she has a past grudge against the Praetor... It might not be a great idea to bring her into the chapel.

"Good evening." murmurs a young woman cloaked in black feathers, lit by the full moon.
To be honest, I must say I've never really had a good look at the Raven's humanoid form. Her body is covered by a long cloak made of black feathers, and her hair is strikingly white and long. Her eyes are golden, and her face, sharp yet kind, is pale and beautiful. Her cloak closes around her entirely like a poncho, covering her from shoulders to knees, and she smiles.

That's a lot worse than the brief summary we got before. I don't know what to do now. Weird that Anansi would LIKE the extra step we mentioned with how terribly Coyote acted before.

...something almost seems off about this whole thing. Clown is definitely driving Coyote mad, yet apparently Coyote was horrible enough BEFORE to cause such chaos. Why would Anansi think Coyote would behave if he had Clown's station?

"And those.... two races?"
"The elves were destroyed outright. Have you ever noticed a lack of old growth forests?" she asks. "And a lack of a nature god? The other is the Dwarves. They were driven deep, deep underground. So far that even we cannot see them or reach them. It was a blow to all faiths."

So long as you don't dive directly into rocks or something you should be fine. Though... the landing may be slightly tricky.

Now suck it up. The first step is to figure out how to get a stable glide going, then how to flap your wings to get more height. Then how to slow yourself down via flapping. After that, it's more subtle things like maneuvers and stuff.

I'm about to leap off when I hear a familiar voice.

"Pointless! Utterly pointless!"
Shi! "Why the hell would I work with you?!"

What- how- How did she get here so fast? Wasn't she just in a town last night? Stay put. Listen in.

A bark. Like a dog, and a laugh.
"'Cause we got the same enemy. The guy's got so many allies and weapons and tools at his disposal, we couldn't possibly get close ter him."
"You damn animal... let me loose or will kill you here and now!"

Damn. Are you still in bird form? I want to keep her alive so long as she's NOT actively working against us.

If possible, try to hop down the side so you can get a look at them.

I peer inside. Shi is trapped, tied tightly to a series of poles.

!!!
She's normal age again!

I am currently of the avian persuasion.
"Now, Ah'm willing ta turn a blin' eye to one ah two mistakes. But it was your jahb to cripple dis bastahd so we could plow right through and ovah 'im. Yer was supposed ter steal the damn hat. And instead yeh gif me dis!"

There's a loud crack and an a cry of paun as he strikes her across the face with the head of the cane.

My cane.

"Do yeh have any idea how... how badly we were hurt by that one.... little... change?! How much you... and yew alone... ruined our plans?"

"I... I won't let you kill him." she mutters. "He deserves better than to die at the hands of a mongrel bitch like you."

"SILENCE, YEW FOUL TRAITAH!"

Crack. Scream.

She spits in his face.

"Kill me, then. I don't care. You lost the moment you decided to target him and his friends! There's no way you, or me, or the gods themselves could stop him now!"

"Yew watch yer mouth..."

He winding up again...

I don't care what she has done to me before.

If it wasn't for second chances, I wouldn't exist.
I let my body work on automatic, running forward anf leaping into the air, flying forward at a dizzying speed to slam directly into the bastard's eye socket. He flails, throwing the cane away, sending it clattering out of the cave and sight.

After a few moments of struggle, he knocks me away, reaching for his weapon while covering the ruined socket with one hand. He unsheathes the sword attacked to his leg, growling lowly.

It's HIM. That's the "Avatar".

What's going on?! Hattori just appeared out of thin air, some crazy bird attacked the Avatar of Assholes, and now he's pissed even worse than before!

Good thing I'm not tied to the wall or anything... My arms are secured, but not my legs. I managed to get him to swing and hit the bars.

You should be pretty dexterous Shi. Untie the ropes.
If that proves too difficult of time consuming, tackle.

Also, what the heck did you do?! Not only are you back to normal but you can make noise?! Get some kind of God-Power-Nullifying-Arti?
>>

I'm going to go with untying the ropes.

Er, actually you're pretty limber, right? Any chance you could use your body weight to just wiggle out of them now that your captor is indisposed? I assumed you used the old trick of puffing up your body when he was tying you up to make this easier. You're a smart woman, after all.

Who is this fuck anyway? And why are you working with them, I thought you had more class.

I manage to slip out of the ropes as Stitches comes to. He draws a pair of knives and hucks them at the Avatar, who knocks both from the air. I catch voth of them and stab him in the back!

?!?!

The blood... it's... AAAGH!?

^#%^$

The blood just... stabbed her.

Okay, this guy can cancel out magic and attack with his own blood.

Well, our first priority is making sure he doesn't break Raven's cloak. Second is making sure he doesn't break the hat. Third is keeping Shi alive. Just being realistic, here.

Can you try to knock out the Avatar, or otherwise fight him without drawing blood?
>>

Teleport to just above him.

Utilize gravity.

Shi stumbles out of the cave. She;ll be fine, I can tell from here she won;t bleed out.

Speaking of blood...

He moves in to assault me, swinging the axe overhead. I smoothly slip to one side, then bring my hands down in a hammer blow. Through the fur, I see his skin blacken before I strike, but it's too late to stop.

I might as well have struck iron! It's like hitting steel!I feel a pinky break and stumble away. Incredible...

Oh for fuck's sake.

I would suggest Show Stopper but he knows about the hat and will likely try to prevent it. Instead, do a bunch of teleports beforehand to confuse him, THEN Show Stopper.

Uh, hopefully the hat is still operational...

Finding the cane might be a good idea. That is, if Shi hasn't found it first.
>>

This guy reminds me of a Kishin. Hopefully he's not Coyote's champion.
In lieu of actually calming the situation with words (highly unlikely giving the circumstances), I believe we should retrieve the cane. Having a weapon that can reduce things to ash is useful.

He is not Coyote's champion, but his AVATAR. The blood power is probably only part of his vast repertoire. I must escape! I doubt even severing his head would kill him.

No, I must find a place where Coyote has no influence and lead him there. For now, though, escape!
I tip my hat, teleporting away and out of the cave. As I land, I pick up my cane an-
Oh god.
The wound that Shi had has literally exploded, her shoulder a mere mass of bone chips, torn muscle, and blood.
Shi is unconcious, but certainly alive. I cannot carry both her and the cane, and I do not have time to stow the cane....

I toss aside the cane, picking up Shi in my arms.
Her eyes flutter.
"W-why?!" she manages.

I say nothing. The avatar howls, succumbing to his bloody hollow's pain, and the scream cuts out suddenly.
I kick open the door and lay Shi hastily on the table, pulling out the red string and needle. I don't have much time.

Elle enters, blinking in the morning darkness.
"Wha- Why?"

"Life is the right of all peoples." I mutter. "Rogues, backstabbers, traitors, knights, heroes and children. Everyone... deserves a second chance."

I feel something strange come over me.

"There is no greater cause than life itself!"

Tell Ella to call Raven. Warn her about Coyote's Avatar being around. Worst comes to worst she has to take her power back for awhile.
