We servants of this secret place.
And though our flesh may turn to dust,
Never will Death find Andellousia.

My name is Kafiq. I am writing this journal in the hopes that one day, if I am successful, the story of my trial will not be lost.

It has been three days since my father passed away, and the time for mourning has ended.
In his dying words, he told me the time had come for something he had spoken of many times.

Andellousia. The Lost Land that so many think a legend. The great place of the birth of our kind, the cradle of our existence. My line served as guardians of that place once, in a time long past.
Many years ago we were driven from it, and our exodus spread us across the world. But the time has come to return. So it has come to my duty -- my destiny. I must find and return to Andellousia, or die trying.

I will keep my notes and thoughts here. I will need a clear head to do what is required of me.

If you are to be leaving on a journey, the most important thing is to bring supplies.
Food and water and all of that are important yes, but what is most important is ROPE.
Make sure you bring all the rope you can.
That shit will SAVE YOUR LIFE.
After that, I suppose we just need someplace to begin our search!
So... got anything to start with? Legends, artifacts, books, vague mysterious tablet carvings? Anything like that?

Most of my line are too old or too tied to this place to leave and help me, but they have provided me with some simple supplies -- water, rations, rope, and a portable tent -- along with a collected sum of everything they could spare, some 200 golden coins.

I wish I knew more of Andellousia than the vague allusions of legend. It is said the lost land lies far from this parched land, far, far to the east, in a lush valley. But beyond that, there are only tales of grieving. I suppose if more were known of its location, it wouldn't be a lost land.

I have lived in this village, the Quiet Oasis, nearly all of my life. I travel on occasion to the White Dunes to buy supplies for the people here.

...I am not sure I can leave all this behind so easily.

I have often contemplated staying, and it was a point of argument against my father for many years.
But I cannot ignore a plea for help. Andellousia, the spirits of my ancestors... they are calling to me now. I couldn't feel it before, but now... somehow, I know what he meant.

None of my line -- none capable of the long journey that surely lies ahead -- are able to come with me.
However, and rather unfortunately, there is ONE person who I believe will want to-

There are three things you must carry with you through your quest. They are more important than all the gold and rations you could carry.

The first is a fantastic hat. You seem to have that covered.
The second is a spirit of adventure. Excitement, adventure, exotic foreign lands. Surely you're the type that has climbed a mountain, simply to see what lies on the other side?

Looks like she's made her choice, in more ways than one.
There won't be anything you can do to make her stay put, and trying to leave without her will just cause her to wander off on her own, looking for you... And that would put her in danger.

Besides, if she comes along with you, you'll at least have someone to talk to other than yourself - less likely you'll go crazy.

"I will. And I will see you again."
With that, I take my leave -- of Illeena, of the town I grew up in, of the person I was.
Leaving friends is a painful experience, but I know I must do this, for I am given a great responsibility.

Speaking of which, I now have a big decision to make, Journal. Should I head to the White Dunes, or to Ka'Vana? The White Dunes are closer, and a more familiar location to me, where I could stock up on many supplies at a fairly good price. But Ka'Vana is a larger city, by a main thoroughfare. Travel eastward would be much easier from there, than through the rolling dunes to the North.
I should think on this a while.

Hours pass beneath the dry, scorching desert sun and finally the tents of the White Dunes climb over the next rise.
I have traded here before, in a rather limited capacity. There is a Bazaar that may have what I need, but I'm wary about being caught up in spending too much. After all, I'm not used to buying much more than basic foodstuffs in this place.

What's more important right now is information. You have no idea what you're doing other than "walk east through the desert." Try finding some sages, or a library, or failing that a mysterious cloaked figure that wants to sell you a map.

That's an old haggling trick. It's not true. That she's using it implies that she'll go lower. Which is interesting, because everything else suggests she won't. It's possible that it's habitual.

Regardless it's now time to consider if that sword is worth 170 gold to us. In all honesty, I reckon it is. But we still have other stuff to buy, and I'm not super comfortable going around with no money on us - we've got food for a week, but we have no income, and we're in a desert, so we can't forage. You'll have to excuse my tendency to jump onto cliche's but if this woman is legit, then I'm a monkey's uncle. We could probably find a pawn shop in the city selling swords for 20 gold and we'll have spent 90% of our money on a possibly crappy short sword just 'cause.

I wasn't just being a prick either -- Notice how we gave her our story, making it perfectly obvious that we were putting ourselves in great peril. Her concern was to foist an overpriced weapon onto us, regardless of how much we had to spend. She literally would have us go to die with nothing but a sword, so long as she could lighten our pockets first.

Dickishness justified, as far as I'm concerned. Her tactics are so transparent it'd be hilarious if not for the people actually wanting to get that sword at any cost.

How far can we make it on 13 gold anyway?

"I'm just not comfortable with the thought of going on this journey with nothing but a sword to my name. I appreciate your kind offer, but 150 gold is as high as I can go. I'm sorry for having wasted your time, my lady."

It's illegal to sell swords to civilians here, if you'll remember. So she is not, in the law's eyes at least, legit. And we could not purchase a sword in any establishment that was.

>I wasn't just being a prick either -- Notice how we gave her our story, making it perfectly obvious that we were putting ourselves in great peril. She literally would have us go to die with nothing but a sword, so long as she could lighten our pockets first.
Except everything we've said to her has been in the process of bartering. She has no reason to believe you're honest.

So that invalidates most of your problems with her, though honestly it looks like you just disliked her because she, as people normally do in markets, started high and let us haggle a bit.

>Her tactics are so transparent it'd be hilarious if not for the people actually wanting to get that sword at any cost.
Her "tactics" are entirely normal things that people do when making a deal, yes. I don't know what's amusing about that, but feel free to laugh, because nobody wants that sword "at any cost", merely at a fair cost. A sword is a pretty useful thing on an adventure, after all.

Even if none of this were true, and your initial reaction of hating her for no damn reason were actually fair and justified, we still shouldn't be threatening to call the cops on the girl.

>Dickishness justified, as far as I'm concerned.
No. Fuck you.

Now on an entirely different note...
>How far can we make it on 13 gold anyway?
Well we got a week's worth of food on 15. If the pricing is proportioned equivalently to my RL situation, we should be able to get everything for 13 just fine. Considering we're in the middle of a desert, though, that's probably not the case, and we'll have a bit of coin left over. If so, we should hang on to that and use it to by cloth if we need to work to raise money in the future.

What's a towel?

I set out from the town, to make my way southeast to Ka'Vana over the rough hills of the desert.
Kabaad, the hardware merchant, waves to me as I leave, noticing my direction.

A brakas is a rough, monstrous creature with a thirst for fresh blood. They're about fifteen feet tall, and as wide as a barn. I should be careful should I see any.

If I'm really lucky I should be able to run away, since they're supposedly quite slow, but I doubt I could take one on in a fight.

>I mean, this is just as dangerous to you as it is to her.
>Surely she has skills that'll help on your journey.
No. She doesn't. This is what I am trying to stress: Illeena is the last person in our village suited to this kind of dangerous adventure and the fact that she thinks she is capable (or that there is no danger) only makes her more vulnerable. I am capable of making camp and fending for myself in the wild for a time, I have gone on journeys before, though none as long as this, I can fight with a sword, I can hunt. I can stay low, I can even track to a degree, and I can find my way in the world.
Illeena can do none of these things. She is not useless, but her place is not out here! She is completely unsuited to this type of journey and even with me there to watch over her she would end up getting hurt. It's not that I don't like her, or don't want her company, it's that if she comes along I am certain it will be bad for her.

This is not something I am going to enjoy, but it seems I have no choice, and my father taught me to always look after my friends.
I slap Illeena across the face. Lightly, though.

She looks at me stunned for a moment, then smiles.
>"Ah, you're so rough~♥"
"Illeena, please. You have to understand."
She frowns, eyes suddenly beginning to water.
>"Why don't you care about me, Kafiq?"
"I DO care about you!"
She pauses blankly.
>"Then... why won't you take me with you?"
"I'm opposed to it because I care about you. I don't want you to be hurt, Illeena. If anything happened to you, I would never be able to forgive myself."

You're a real gentleman Kafiq. I worry of the consequences to this but your heart is certainly in the right place. Hopefully this'll be the last time it comes up and Illeena will return home safely.

Shake your head and give a gentle laugh. Now that she's said she'll go home for your worries sake there's no reason to be all that serious and stoic. "I'm afraid that would be awkward. I've got no skills in that department." or say something akin to that.

This seems to be your last night you'll be with any friendly, well-known company so enjoy the company while it lasts with jokes and such.

YES! You aren't allowed to leave for Andellousia until you have conceived an heir and imparted the vital knowledge on to, if not your heir, then at least your heir's mother.

Illeena is here, willing, and able. If your duty demands you throw your life away on a futile quest, then it doubly demands that you leave children to repeat your mistakes.

I'm with you, Kafiq. Get this girl out of harms way, complete your journey.

If you return home or even if you decide to stay wherever you wind up, there will be plenty of time to find a woman you're actually drawn to. There's nothing worse than being trapped in a relationship with someone you don't want to be in one with to begin with, no matter how much you like them as a person.

I don't want to get more involved than would be right, especially since I don't know how long I'll be gone. But it seems Illeena will need something more before she considers this matter settled.

>"Sorry, it just feels weird."

What am I doing? I'm painting her face, like you suggested. It makes sense -- it is an old custom in our village, a symbolic oath.
All I had to do was find a few arobaro roots just under the sand and extract some of their creamy pigment. Not a hard task.

With this gesture, I cement our friendship, and promise we will see each other again. Hopefully she'll be satisfied.

No, it's not like a wedding vow. It's just a gesture to show sincerity and friendship, and a promise to return.

It wouldn't be proper to sleep in the tent with Illeena, but more importantly, I have to keep watch for any dangers. So I'll spend the night outside. Thankfully, at least, it seems like a quiet night.

>"Kafiq, you know, if you change your mind, it's much warmer in here."

The stars are muted by the wispy clouds that trail over the night sky, tempting the sand-dwellers with the vain hope of water.
