We been attacked. Not just some first level shit pissin' about either.

The other day, Ash came back from scoutin' the Tower near Tela Cruz. Good news as I understand it, but she's savin' her presentation for the Boss's return.

Then this morning, they showed up outside.

Paladins.

would tislomer work instead? she seems pretty damn innocent, may be enough to stop the paladins. unless they call anyone that fights monsters 'paladin'. in which case we need something powerful... does tislomer know what chemicals mixed to blow her up? get a bottle of each of those and throw them both at the guy so he explodes.

There were... hell, seven or eight of 'em I think. Saw 'em coming and headed out to meet 'em. Wanted to keep 'em away from the base, protect the 'bolds and the Odds.

Tislomer let us grab a few potions, then it was just me and Ashedel out there against 'em. We drove 'em off, but they'll be back. Soon.
They said as much.
>>

okay, get the odds and tislomer to rig a chemical trap. get a bunch of those mixing explosive and set it so when you pull a rope they mix and go off. or get a bottle of each and throw them at a guy so they mix ON a guy, totally destroying him.

No good on the chems. Tislomer doesn't know what blew up on her table that day, everything just got sorta smashed.

>"I'm sorry! If I could remember I'd tell you!"
"Don't worry about it. You just go back to helping Ona with the medicines."

Yeah, they've been working on patching me and Ash up since the fight, but the Paladins will probably return tonight.

That's a no-go on the traps, too. Without Finesse we can't work out the mechanisms, even with Babrakus's help. And the Odds -- well, they're outta commission, maybe permanently. Weird blue stuff seepin' out of their eyes and mouths, they been vegetables for days.
>>
No. 295412 ID: 53ec77

Does Ona know any useful confounding stuff? Hide the doors, or make the paladins forget why they came?

I guess even if she does they're likely equipped for such measures but it might buy you a little time at the least.

...What about that good old crotch-level swinging trap? Is that still functional?
>>
No. 295413 ID: cf244d

Well, this is a sorry mess. Barricade the doors, and hope this prevents those fuckers from getting in. Nothing much else you can do. Could be they'll either stay outside and try to starve you out, and you can at least wait until Muschio returns to fight them. Could be they'll bust in, but then at least you'll have a chokepoint to work with.
>>
No. 295415 ID: 00d3d5

>>295410
You're not supplied properly for a siege, but Muschio is on his way back. ang you should have enough supplies to last that long.

You're at a disadvantage out in the open, but since you're the reacting force you have a defensive advantage. Bar the doors and pile heavy crap behind them. It will take them time to force their way through, and when they do their entrance will be slowed. You should be able to beat them if you can keep it to only one or two of them at a time.

Now, if only you had some lava or something...
>>
No. 295416 ID: 8c73c8

the portal is bound to muschio right? the magic damage he took probably caused a feedback and destabalized them. check the mimic, if that is broke too then yeah it's magic backlash.

how much booze you got? can sacrifice the front room and rig it to ignite by covering it in alcohol and haveing a little trail lead away. when it's time you light the trail and light them on fire.

No, the Odds got busted *before* he got hit.

But yes, don't forget about the Mimic. Or our three scout guys. Logos, Pathos, Ethos? Send one of them out to keep an eye on Paladin movements, another out to meet Muschio on his way back and tell him to hurry the fuck up, and the third... Send the third to the goblins we have as allies. Ask for any sort of assistance they can give, or reports of anyone that we can hire in the area.

We still have the traps we've already installed, right? All we need to do is make sure everyone is on alert mode, and that we have some advance warning before they arrive. It's okay if they get in so long as they're contained.

You may have to include Geppa in the defensive force if when they come back. Sad to do but you need backup.

And the boss is returning with Finesse, and he's got some extra people with him. Give them some time after that and it should be possible to arm some of the goblins from the nearby tribes and maybe get some trainers from Salamanders tower. Then we can find out where the paladins are coming from and march on them.

Whelp, if the paladins know where the base is, we're kinda screwed. They're probably still after the Master for his shenanigans in that town way back.
And Paladins are tenacious.

I dunno, fighting them doesn't seem like an option. A good paladin is always up for parley, though. Maybe you could try some diplomacy next time they come here.
>>

Wait, you guys aren't EVIL evil are you? Because them Paladins' divine fury tends to do a number on evil guys.

WAIT! I JUST HAD AN IDEA! You guys can use the time you have now to perform an elaborate ruse. Since it would be... unwise to face them again in combat, you're going to have to convince them that after your first battle, you realized the error of your ways and have converted to whatever religion they stand for. You guys should probably go get some white robes, and some 2X4's so you can build a makeshift altar. And don't forget to rehearse some religious sounding BS so you can fake your way through it if they question you. All things considered, I think this is your best option for not dying.

They said the same stuff you normally hear outta Paladins. Callin' us monsters and what have you. You think they're gonna show mercy an' not see through a false testifyin', you don't know Paladins. Good's not a concept they like to apply to us non-humans.

But you may be right. They're gonna be back, and in greater numbers. We may not be able to fight them on our own, but we can try to hunker down and hold off till the Boss gets back.

I dunno when they'll strike next, so if we're gonna move anything in or out, we gotta do it now.
"You three. We might have to send you out. If we're barricaded up when you get back, can you get inside through the vent?"
>"SIR! Affirmative! We can easily squeeze through that small space."
>"BOSS! You can count on us. Just tell us what you need."
>"CHIEF! We'll be on it!"

Hm.
Should we send them out? And where to?
Or would it be better to keep them here?

You're the boss... basically. It's your call.

Tell one to scout for paladins and then report back on what path they're using, and have Tislomer prepare poisons. One of them is to go to the goblins and kobold villages in the area and find recruits to aid, people to help with preparing traps and defenses. And the last one is to go find Commander Salamander and see if she got anything she can send on a short notice. We will try to get a message through to Mushio.

When you know from what direction they're coming from you set out to dig some traps. Nice little things with spikes through feets and similar things. Smeared with shit and poison to make sure it leaves a lasting mark on them. That should make them more manageable when they arrive.

>>295511
These are the paladins that commited a genocide against the gnolls and had a large part in making Geppa into the crazy bitch she is. Parley is not something they're big on when it comes to what they consider monsters.

>>295513
But we are evil. In fact Mushio spreads an aura of evil around him. Remains for quite a while after he has left an area as well. This place probably screams of evil to them. And their religion is of the mankind first and anyone else can die to create more living space for mankind type.

Hey, Dompag, think you can make a makeshift brand of bronze/spiked knuckles with junk around the base or find something that can penetrate their armor better than your fists?

Because it's not for the ears of the characters. Because I despise it when people try to claim that they know about Ridders mental problems and the information that gave them. Too much meta.

Anyway, I think it was the races of man. In which Ridder, among others like our dear boss, are included. Ogres, goblins, kobolds and gnolls are not included though. And I think that for them good and the races of man is the same thing.

>>
No. 295541 ID: 61b379

Instead of being trapped inside, trap them inside.

You could grab anything you can carry and head to the hills, make it look like you abandoned the fort when the paladins return.

Then when they burst in to investigate, lock them in and light The Vault on fire. The Vault is stone so it'll be mostly ok after the fire eventually burns out.

A high cost maneuver, but you seem short on options until the boss and Finesse get back.

Or, you know, you could just actually run and hide until Muschio gets back. What's the worst that can happen, they wreck whatever you couldn't carry?
>>
No. 295553 ID: 653ea0

One to track paladins, one to report to Ridder and Muschio if it finds him, and the third can scout close while reporting back frequently.

>>
No. 295587 ID: 517631

Paladins have a one track mind at the grunt level. They will keep coming as long as someone tells them to. There are only a few sure fire ways to make them disappear.

1.Wipe them out. This is probably out of the question.
2. Get someone else to wipe them out.
3. Turn them towards another target.
4. Flee into hiding til they give up and move on.

I recommend #2. Here is how it can go. We have have in our possession many things to lure another foe unto our current foe. We have items that could be used to make it seem that the Paladins are here to "right the wrongs" of the past. Mainly reinstating the former government. But for this to work we need them to look as guilty as possible. This involves our captive. By planting her possessions (Preferably bloodied somehow)it would make them not only guilty of trying to overthrow a regime, but they also stooped to cutting their bloodline.

Finding their base is key, plant a few pieces of evidence, and turn the Government on them. Even if it is a full chapter/covenant/etc. of paladins, the countries' militia and standing military would easily overwhelm them. Since we have the little guys which have been used to plant things before, its a long shot that might work.

Or well... we can wait and hope for other options to open up.
>>
No. 295592 ID: cf244d

>>295587
This is good except that they can just be like "We apologize, milord, we attempted to rescue your daughter but were too late."
And then we have even more huge problems. Just planting isn't going to cut it.
>>
No. 295593 ID: 517631

>>295592

The princess is only one part of it. Also Paladins don't "usually" lie. Imagine being a fanatic rebel coming upon bloodied items belonging to lost royalty, as well as correspondence letters detailing how/from she was taken signed with the former royal seal. Maybe even a letter or two requesting aid in retaking a lost kingdom.

And just putting the rumor out there would sic the fanatics on them. The Paladins show up from nowhere and are running a campaign through the countryside. It wouldn't take much for them to look guilty.

Speaking of which we haven't seen hide nor hair of the princess.

We need to know what she's AWARE of. If she knows we're under attack by PALADINS she will probably yell at the top of her lungs for her release like any old Damsel in distress.

And we of course cannot lose her. Not with her potential to drastically affect the flow of events over-all.

All right. I send the Denlings out: one to Coriander's Tower, one to Sir Ridder, one to the nearby Goblin Village. Hopefully we can get some reinforcements.

Hm. I don't know about the rest of these ideas. I'm just a guard. Let me run some by Ashedel, she's got experience as a soldier.

"Ashedel! What do you think about simple traps, like pits and stuff?"
>"They'd take way too long to dig without a mobile force, and the Paladins could be back within the hour for all we know. And if we received reinforcements, we'd still have to wait hours for them just to arrive. It's wasted time."
"What about running? Or pretending the base was abandoned?"
>"A force that size is bound to have skilled trackers. They'd find us. Besides, we've got too many resources here, plus a POW to keep track of. We couldn't just evacuate."
"What if we tried to divert the enemy? Plant decoy evidence, spread rumors?"
>"Like I said, they could be back within the hour, armed and ready. That's a long-term plan we just don't have time for. Even if they won't be back for a while, it could take days."
"Could we barricade and try to hold them off?"
>"It's possible. This place is a fortress and there's only one entrance, but if they have siege weapons, or our reinforcements don't arrive, we might never get out."
"What do you recommend? Any other ideas?"
>"Respectfully, it's not my call, sir."

Okay, so barricade the door and pray like hell that they can't rustle up seige weapons before reinforcements arrive.

Also see what Ona can do. Maybe our barricade could be supplemented by some sort of warding.
Additionally, do we have any sort of ranged capacity? As far as I know we don't, but being able to shoot at the paladins as they approach wouldn't hurt.
If we could make it appear to the Paladins that the gate was a chokepoint they could take, we might have the opportunity to defeat them one by one.

Of significance: Nobody is thinking about why they left. They may have left in search of information, seige weapons, or additional bodies.

Sounds like barricading is the way to go. You can still use the denlings though. They can't actively kill a target. But they can leave poisoned stuff out there. "We need to barricade the place. Is there anything you can do to help? Any spells that'll slow 'em down, or keep us safer?"

"We're at a disadvantage without the Odds. Do you think we could reassemble the cell bars to help secure the front door?"

UM. Excuse me. Don't you know anything about acid?
Acid doesn't just melt everything. It works on SOME things and it doesn't work on SOME OTHER things. It MIGHT melt like little spots on their armor if we threw it at them but I mean I would have to make a LOT and that would take a LONG TIME.

I think the best use we can make of Ona is getting her to put a curse on their leader that confuses him, getting him/her to make poorer choices and subtly cripple them without them easily noticing. At the least we know Ona can do some stuff with libido as she's said she could before, so that could be a possibility.

Charmed, since you're so smart and beautiful and good with acids, what do you think of the Odd situation? Have you checked the properties of the blue ooze coming out of them or the crystals? Maybe we could use the ooze leaking from the odds for something, like previous acid suggestions.

You want me to weaponize a drug?
Hell, even if I could, you think I'm going to go out there and face a sea of angry paladins to throw it or spray it or whatever?

Besides, in as long as it'd take even the strongest stuff to hit them, I'll bet spears and arrows would hit you first.
That's a pretty dumb idea, even for you guys.

Look, let me draw you a picture here.

You can put it on a spear, a spray bottle, whatever you want.
But one way or another, someone will have to actually go out there, where many paladins will be, and then not only stab them -- ideally more than one! -- and then wait for the stuff to take effect.

This person right here. This person, who is facing a bunch of armed paladins. In the open. This person? It has to be someone. It can't be nobody. It literally can't.

Nonono silly.

Put drug concoction on the pointed ends and edges of your weapons. When they bite into flesh, the drug is introduced into the system.

You can do this with arrows, pikes, swords, spears...anything that can puncture flesh.

We're not going to deploy it in the open, we're going to flood the entryway so that they get lungfulls of it as soon as they bust down the door.
Something fast acting that disperses into the air would be best. Poisonous smoke, for example.

Okay.

You have a door. Which is the only entrance way.

What happens when you try to funnel a large force through a small apeture? Shit gets clogged.

You need to set up a barricade at the door, and then stab and poke anyone who tries to stick an arm, leg, limb, head, whatever inside.

Also isn't there a trapdoor at the front door?

Might be a good idea to send out a scout on recon to suss out their numbers, so you at least have a rough idea what you're up against. Maybe try and find out their weaknesses/game plan/objective (assuming it's more than the usual "cleanse the land of wickedness").
>>
No. 295894 ID: 70d9eb

To be clear, I think the best strategy we have is barricading up the door, have Ona use her new glyph to curse the paladins with something like confusion/high libido to get friendly fire or friendly "fire" going on, and possibly use some ranged physical attacks to poke at the enemies trying to assault the front door.

A scouting of their numbers would be nice but getting a good scouting of them would prevent us from getting a solid barricade up without preventing the scout from getting back in. I don't suppose Ona has the ability to do some scrying of any sort?

Attacking through the door doesn't make much sense to me, but I'm not a soldier. For one, if we barricade up the door, it'll be hard to leave enough space for it to reach it well enough to fight through it. Second, wouldn't they just stay out of our limited range? Third, we'd have to cut a hole in the door big enough to fight through, but I guess Babrakus could handle that.

Speaking of, we don't have any bows or crossbows here, and even if we did, I don't think any of us know how to use one. I can use a blowdart, but I don't think it'd get through metal armor.

A scout might work, but we couldn't start barricading until after they came back. They'd have to scout unseen, and get back here before the paladins do, and we don't even know when that might be. If they don't get here in time they'll be locked out, and if the paladins find 'em, not even the toughest of us will stand a chance on their own.

'Course, we already sent out the Denlings, so it'd have to be one of us...

>Second, wouldn't they just stay out of our limited range?
If they did that they wouldn't be bashing the door down. That was the point.
But it's not worth risking someone over. If we can't do it without compromising the integrity of the barricade, then don't. But we should be able to.

Don't send anyone outside, don't risk people.

Now you get to your glyph, too. You can fuck with libidos, right? If you could substantially increase some of their libidos, while keeping others down, they might star raping each other. That would probably hinder their ability to fight cohesively.
Barring that, just curse them as hard as you can.
>>
No. 295902 ID: 1854db

>>295900
That is not how libido works. Upon becoming incredibly horny you do not just start raping people unless you are CRAZY.

Granted if multiple people are horny they might start having consensual drug-addled sex but that's just a silly silly plan. These are trained, disciplined soldiers. A little lust isn't going to cripple them.

If we're going to barricade, we're going to barricade. We do not need to do more than that. A *second* line of defense with like, some sharpened stakes lined up that they'd have to climb over might do something if they were poisoned/drugged I guess, but it'd have to get through a chink in their armor. They are heavily armored. It would have to be very fast-acting to do anything ANYWAY and the drugs would have to be something other than an aphrodisiac unless you want them to fuck US.

If there's a way we can dig out the area right in front of the door so they can't use a battering ram that'd be great.

This isn't just incredibly horny, this is supernaturally horny. So fucking horny their dick will be as hard as fucking adamantium and rip right through their armor. Even if it doesn't cause them to rape each other, it would certainly distract them.
However if Ona can't do this satisfactorily, I'm sure she has other curses which she's just waiting to apprise us of.

>If we're going to barricade, we're going to barricade.
Aye. And we are going to do that.
>We do not need to do more than that.
Every little bit helps. I want to be sure the barricade holds.
>A *second* line of defense with like, some sharpened stakes lined up that they'd have to climb over
Pointless. That would likely be damaged or destroyed when (if) they bring siege weapons to bear on the door.
>might do something if they were poisoned/drugged I guess, but it'd have to get through a chink in their armor. They are heavily armored.
Yep, we have problems.
>It would have to be very fast-acting to do anything ANYWAY and the drugs would have to be something other than an aphrodisiac unless you want them to fuck US.
Sure. If they get inside the gates, the time for aphrodisiac is past.

Look, I don't mean to be stubborn, but that whole approach just isn't going to work. The doors don't have holes in 'em or anything, and if we try to leave enough room open for someone to stick weapons out, even in a very narrow range, that's gonna be less space we have to pile stuff against the doors.

I can understand wanting to use powered up weapons an' stuff if that's our last defense, but like you said, we shouldn't just go out and use 'em head-on.

As for smoke and gases, setting up traps was Finnie's thing. Without her I don't feel confident setting up any kind of bomb. Gases would have to be spread manually, so we'd be fanning them out ourselves... and listen: Fanning smoke out a narrow exit, from a closed area out into the open air, I'll tell you which one of us gets the worse deal on that.

As for my own special brand of magic... evidently I'm still not being clear. I'm a witch doctor. I do hexes and curses, but mostly uncursing, un-hexing, and healing. The whole profession was started in response to sorcery and standard witching, to help people who'd been targeted by that kind of magic. Now we branched out a little sure, and I like to think I'm rather flexible, but I can't just go flinging spells of dizziness and death all around.

Plus, while I do have some negative effects I could render, it would need time, ritual, and a specific target. I couldn't just project through the door at anyone approaching. And for anything real serious, I'd need some kinda trace of the person to work my hex on. Y'know, a lock of hair, a favored possession. Without ever having seen the person, and having nothing of theirs to work on... I can't do much. And like >>295902 said, libido doesn't work that way. I can't make 'em just start raping each other, good God. And aren't paladins supposed to be like, models of self-discipline? They've probably got stronger willpower resistance to my mojo than most anyone I've hexed.

I'll whip up what little I can as a second line of defense, but don't expect I'll be able to just curse them away from the front door or anything.

Why don't we simply begin by:
1). Disguise the air shaft so we have a clean air supply and can't be smoked/gassed out. (These dirty tricks may be beneath them, but we musn't chance it!)

2). Barricading the doors and, if possible, disguising it with a convincing illusion/ward/spell to either make it look like the rest of the mountain's surface, or even repel them (the evil must be... over there!). If we're capable of doing both, that's even better. (I'm fairly certain that paladins are only capable of sensing evil energies, not magics).

3). Make certain all allies are secured and that we prepare healing poultices, salves, balms and other items needed. This may be a siege, so we're going to want Dompag and Ashadelle in peak condition.

How are your supply stocks, by the way, and what knowledge do we have of the Odd's conditions? I'm thinking escape tunnels or hidden vaults if things go extremely badly.

Talk with Ona and Tislomer about learning how to heal people. Ona for the practical, like first aid, and Tislomer for the creation of things to heal, like potions. I don't know if being a witch doctor is a simple ordeal so I won't suggest having Ona teach you how unless you really want to.

Right now you're letting out a bunch of frustration to your friends about not yet being healthy.

What just happened is you asked yourself "If I could be anything, what would I be?" and gave an answer that is completely understandable.
You aren't backsliding, and you aren't having a breakdown. This is a breakthrough.

I don't think she is dangerous, but I do think she needs to be watched until she gets used to the way things are now. Whatever she was like, she is different now and wants to change.

I do my best to shrug it off.

Perhaps this explains the silence.

We sent for reinforcements from most of our allies then fortified the door in case you didn't get back before the paladins did. "The so-called crimes you speak of are fiction written long after my father's death. In life he was adored by his people, and was a force of good in these lands. You clearly have no duty to the truth if you've allowed yourself to be deluded otherwise.
King Malto wasn't executed by his people, he was assassinated by a cabal of nobles who chafed under his rule and wished to install a leader that would allow their vile proclivities. I could list their names, but if you really could sense evil then you would have ended them already. They surround themselves with the worst scum of humanity, and the few I know who really are capable of sensing evil have described them as walking rifts of pain and suffering.

You condemn me for befriending beasts while you're mounted on one. Hypocrisy suits you.
You accuse me of associating with demons and monsters, but that is an outright lie; neither live within these walls. You wish them dead because they are not races of man, not for any action of their own. The fire which burnt Iniziare Citta to the ground: we have an informant, a knight who once served under your father's own rule, who accredits that destruction to the ruler of this place. A survivor places you spreading heretical views in a church shortly before it was burnt up in the fire. You have been accused of assaulting a defenseless old man in Sepia Town, you have a known alliance with the renegade forces at the Tower of Olber, and you shake hands with demons and beasts."
"You are blind to the true nature of my work, and to the honest value in every soul that dwells here. Man does not stand apart from all other life in this world. He does not thrive in spite of his peers, but by their virtue. You would condemn me for associating with them, but it is only because you are too stubborn to see that they are thinking, feeling creatures just as you or I."

That you still persist in calling beasts equal to man proves only your debasement and low opinion of humanity; as for myself, I know that man has been elevated by God, that his place upon this world is to oversee Creation guided by His hand. I would never look upon an animal as my equal, and never would I consort with demons, as you have."

God damn it, those things are not easy to replace. Ok, we need to buy more time. Do you still have the sword from Red Mesa? If so then you could try to buy time by challenging one of them to single combat.

Otherwise I think it might be time to smirk and go into monologue mode. They're coming here to judge you? With what fucking authority? They claim to speak up for all of the races of man? Well fuck that shit. Their only authority steems from their tyranny. Your father was trying to break such tyranny, and because they couldn't allow that they made the civil war happen. And then they claim to work for the benefit of the races of man, when in truth, they only work for their own benefit and their tyranny will one day make sure that the monstrous races rise up to destroy and kill their oppressors. You deny that they ever had any authority to judge you or your father. They are nothing but base murderers, and when you reclaim your rightful throne, you will destroy their order and kill every single last fucking one of them for the murder of your father.

And lets put some fucking rage into that. These fuckers laughed behind your back as you were driven from your home and your family was killed.

The Paladins hesitate. Murmuring cuts through their ranks. Finally, their leader speaks up.
>"You are making a grave mistake defending these people, Prince of Dorada."
>"Perhaps, but you are not the only ones who stand on principle. To our allies, we shall be true."
>"This will not be the end of our dealings. The Holy Order of the Helianthus will return."

They begin to disperse at their commander's lead, and one of the paladins throws the denling corpse on the ground.
>"This is your trash to deal with."

First idea I got is to get our new blacksmith to forge some armor for Dompag. He may be a tough as hell ogre but he needs some armor of +5 defense against these holier then thou douchebags.
I think Babs has earned himself a fine weapon too with his dedication as of late.

I recover the corpse of Ethos. I will set it aside for the time being, awaiting burial.

A few minutes later, when we are sure the paladins have retreated, Rungord Hookdon and I convene at my head table. Dompag and Ashedel guard the front door in case of further incursions. Babrakus is watching after the princess. Finesse is handling our two new recruits. Tislomer will be working with Miss Openda on some healing potions for myself, as the pain is rather more lingering than I had expected.

Meanwhile, I will deal with Hookdon.
"I must thank you, first and foremost, for your valiant actions. I do not know if I could have stood up to the Helianthus singlehandedly."
>"It is but a small token of my loyalty, Muschio."
"How did you know to come here?"
>"I was out in the Timore Woodlands, to the west, on a hunt with some friends. That's when one of our trackers found your little black friend here, and he told us you were in danger."
>"SIR! I apologize if I was too forward with sensitive information. But you asked me to come back with help from the woods and time was of the essence."
>"In any case, I came here as quickly as my steed could carry me, and it seems not a moment too soon. Tell me, my friend, what has gotten you in such trouble with their order?"

"I'm afraid the Paladins have based their Holy Crusade against me on tired values, hearsay, and misinformation. It appears this Hold was once occupied by evil forces, and perhaps the stigma of their lingering taint has given the impression of evil upon my current operations. They seek further to lay scandalous and wild accusations upon me, charging me with misdeeds for which I am not responsible. Lastly, of course, they condemn me for my association with Kobolds, Goblins and the like -- which they consider "lesser" races."
>"Your father would be proud of you, Muschio. I mean not to tread on a painful subject, of course... but if he were to see you now, standing up for your beliefs, forging ahead with the ideals of racial equality that he built his Kingdom upon, even in the face of war... Muschio, I am sure that wherever he is now, he smiles upon your work."

"...do you truly think so?"
>"I know it, my friend. The paladins cannot see it, for they are too stubborn in their tired ways. I know about stubbornness as well, you see. I had long considered abandoning my responsibilities as heir to a Barony. When I thought I had lost the love of my life, I abandoned my duties and fled to live on my own. It was a time I did not even understand myself, nor my goals. I thought life itself had become a bleak thing. But when you brought us back together, my absence from my responsibilities had served as a valuable life lesson, and though my father had expanded his influence to become King of Dorada, I realized with your guidance that -- Good God, Muschio! What happened to your hand?"
"Oh, excuse me. I lost it in a duel while defending the Patriarch of the Red Mesas."
>"I see I still have much to learn. To think I ran from my duties for fear of responsibility, while you gave your own hand in your trials."

We're trying to fix the Odds, Ms. Ona.

Allow me to shed some light on the situation.

1: Rungord Hookdon is an old acquaintance of the boss. They were in school together and he liked to bully the boss but he seems sorry for that now that we reunited him with the love of his life.

For now we attempt to persuade the boss to negate his need for vengeance and obtain an ally out of him.

2: Wes Fumo is the best blacksmith in the Red Mesas he was employed to us in return for helping the Matriarch and the Patriarch.
He can't control his stuttering and we barely know much of his background but he seems harmless enough.

3: Khaneh Pendle is a military genius also employed to us from the Red Mesas, he is a scholar and is currently helping Finesse with the matter concerning the Odds.
He's also quite the spoiled guy and he's asking for a little more accommodation then the rest but that's what you get for hiring a nobleman.

He's also taken an interest in you. :3

The little mousy Wes Fumo is a skilled blacksmith who did the honors of amputating Muschio's hand. He seems pretty nervous and I'm sure you noticed his stutter, but when it comes to his work he seems very proficient. Nerdy bug fella Pendle Khaneh is a war strategist. They seem to have known each other already, and possibly are buddies.

Uh. Okay. I mean -- uh, yes sir.

Let's see, uh... might as well answer everything I can. To work, I guess I just need a forge, an anvil, a good workspace, and the raw materials. Um... to be content in life? I don't really need much.

My job doesn't usually involve... uh, amputation, but I've got a steady hand when I'm working and it's not the first odd job I've had to do.

Um, okay, what can I make? I can make lots of stuff. I can work with just about any kind of ore, and some kinds of metallic stone, even. And uh... I can make lots of stuff. I make good weapons. Armor too. I mean, I can do smaller stuff too, fine stuff. I got my start making silverware.

I couldn't really, um, make like a... new hand. Don't you have a tinker for that? It's too precise for me. I mean, I could make the parts for it, but I wouldn't know how to get all the gizmos and stuff working together. I don't know about that crystal stuff either, but I mean, if it can be melted it can be forged.

And uh, yeah. I know I don't really look like a smith. Everyone I knew was you know... stout. Or, well I mean, wide. Or -- you know, not like fat or anything but... sturdy? Um, yeah, I'm kinda... scrawny. But I mean... I do good work. Proof is in the product. You know. You can't argue with the results I guess. And I mean people seem to like the results, so I dunno.

Oh, greetings. You must be that collective consciousness I was told about. A peculiar sensation indeed.

Thank you for joining us. As I was just explaining to Miss Finesse, the crystals you've unearthed are indeed peregast, a magically-imbued ore. You see, in truth, metallurgically, it's more similar to traditional ore than a gemstone. It's also the source of many superstitions and rumors. Traditionally believe was that the ore forms at the bottom of the sea, and crystallizes in the dark abyss, before being pushed upward towards shores. But inland deposits like this one have obviously disproved that theory.
They say prolonged exposure can cause madness, or worse.

But again, it's just superstition.
I know of a method by which this ore can be processed, which will subdue its emanations. That should prevent it from interfering with the homunculi, and allow it to be used in magical items.

I warn you, though I am a scholar and I know of a great many magical practices, I am not actually proficient in them. To preempt your question: no, I do not have the ability to convert them to magical items myself.

You can't make magical items, that's fine, but can you subdue the emanations? That's kind of important. We need our odds up and running before we can get much of anything done.

If I recall correctly, the latent emanations of peregast can be subdued rather easily using a simple refinement technique that involves a reprocessing of the slag and the introduction of pitchblende, which I see you have a small quantity of here.

I must say, and Mister Fumo agrees, you have a sizeable stock of ores here. I suppose hollowing out the base of a mountain will do that.
Speaking of which, I wanted to clarify that Mister Fumo and I are not technically friends. We are passing acquaintances and I know him from the royal court, but not on any personal level.

I hand off the peregast and other materials to Fumo along with the instructions. Once we get a smelter or furnace of some kind this won't take long.

I've studied lore, history, and other fields for a good portion of my life, but I can't say I've ever heard of a fractured psyche, let alone one with a physical manifestation. It's very odd.

Well, what shall I tell you about myself? I was raised in a noble family and I have known some degree of privilege all my life, which I recognize makes me by most accounts a fairly spoiled, white-tower sort. I acknowledge it regrettably, but in spite of that I can't really help it.
When I was a young man I was noticed by the royal court when, during a gala ball, I spoke strategy with a general and he recognized my intuition when it came to war plans. Shortly after I was hired on and became part of the Royal Court proper. My skills have languished a bit, of late, because of the shift of focus at the Red Mesas towards group counsel, but I don't particularly mind.

On the subject of standard of living, I must apologize again for my discerning tastes. I know you are working with what you have, but sleeping in a cramped, open-air barracks with several others, in a bed that barely fits me, is just not something I can deal with.

It's entirely acceptable to indulge, though, so long as care is taken to avoid security ramifications.

Perhaps it would be wise to bring it up with Muschio, if you plan to be bringing courtesans into the Vault. Would hate to get on his bad side if he accidentally discovered you'd let a stranger in here, even if you had been very careful about it.
I'm sure if you approach it in a diplomatic manner and explain how sex is somewhat necessary for a man, purely for relieving stress/avoiding distractions, perhaps even from women in the workplace he may well find it a good idea if you are careful about it.
As long as he knows there's no chance of you falling in love, that'll probably get you in his bad books.
As others have said making an arrangement with the tower predominantly inhabited by women might not be a bad idea though they may not be to your tastes.

Girl, there are blood-thirsty paladins that nearly slaughtered a harmless band of travelers roaming about nearby. The last thing we want is for you to be cut down for doing nothing more than looking at a flower funny.

Babrakus, I know it's not your gig and all, but I think she at least deserves to know that she really is safer here. Besides, if there's anything she needs, we'll provide it (as long as it's within reason).

Well, the friendship of his nation is good. Fealty would be better, of course, but he's just a prince at this point and probably couldn't get that (and even if he could it would be a bit much to ask) so let's not mention that.
We could use some wizardly fellow with the ability to turn peregast into magical items, and ideally to do other magic stuff. But powerful magic seems rare, and it's entirely possible that he has no access to such a person.
Unless Ona can make items, of course, but I suspect she cannot.

Assistance in building a working forge to your new smith's requirements. We have lots of ore, but we can't really make a good forge unless everyone's willing to use up the time and resources to start from scratch.

also, unless it has been covered already, ask if he could extend the some hospitality to your allies, both Coriander and Ridder's groups.

Although depending on the other two shadows' success, they may be arriving at some point to aid in your defense against foes already departed.

Asking for a forge and stuff would be nice, but... um, considering the way he offered his assistance that sounds like it would be almost insulting in how minor it is. I suppose we could ask for help in getting our shit in order, just... in general. That seems worthy enough, considering the state of the fort. We could straight up fortify the place.

"What can you tell me about your new nation? Where do you command it from, precisely?"

It's a sight more impressive than my old Barony, don't you think? Our main stronghold is here. This is where we'd set out from on our hunt, when we ran into your little black friend."

Yeah, he's kinda been getting beaten up and all that. But once this paladin stuff blows over, he'll be right back to making her feel pretty. (Oh so pretty~)

>>299897
Geppa may be doing better, but we don't need a "Woe is me" princess to try to beck sympathy from her. That... that will just end badly. VERY badly.

>"You got it, boss."

"Ashedel, Pendle will have your room for the night. I'll have the kobolds lay out a cot for you in the barracks, if that's agreeable."

"As for me, I'm going to retire to my room for the night. It's time I got some sleep."

A gift from Ona to improve her (and thus your) power over the world! Through it you will be able to extend your reach and other such things!

Ask her about it after a good rest. And maybe some tea.

Why ain't you doing like your mother says? She tells you to come in and wash your hands and help, and you do it. Your old mother needs what help she can get, and you best be doing it. It ain't right giving your mother trouble like you be doing.

MARJANI! LOOK OUT!

There is a stovepipe about to land on your head. It just sort of broke or something. There must be foul magic afoot. Assuming you guys are lazy as hell and didn't fix it when it obviously needed fixing. It doesn't look to be in obvious disrepair to me, but that could be art style.
