Wow, you're really messed up, aren't you?

I can't think of the last time anybody was down here. We haven't needed you for a very long time. If you believe the Representatives, we still don't. But I'm not so sure I believe in them anymore..

Oh, what am I saying? Whether we need you or not, nobody deserves to be left in the basement like this. I'm getting you out of here.

I'm sure your mind isn't exactly clear, and I'll answer any questions you have, but time is of the essence here. I'll work on vindicating you while we talk.

Agh. I can't imagine how anyone could let this happen to you. Alright. let's see, I'll start simple; I'm ARC1147. as in, the one-thousand and forty-seventh individual of the Zind species to be designated 'ARC'.

Zind, well, I'm a Zind. We are, so far, the only smart species we know of in the universe, and our legs are normally like this, thank you very much.

We're inside one of the few remaining online Hubs. Don't worry if you don't know what a Hub is, it's not important right now. Just be happy there is one.

As for you.. Well, that's a little more complicated. Hold on, let me get this faceplate off of you first. You're going to look a bit ugly for a bit, but you won't exactly have a face if everything goes right, anyway. Sorry. Hope that's not a problem.

Hah, alright. This is very complex work, anyway. Sorry about this, but I'm changing your video feed so that you can only see out of your face.

I need to do it so that you don't mess yourself up, but it also means we can finally meet face-to-face. Hi! Hope you're not disgusted by my ugly mug, because you're going to staring at it for a while.

Alright, so what you are is.. Hm. This is a problem. Oh, don't worry, you're fine. It's just that I can't find an output. Don't worry, I'm on it. So, let's see where I should start..

Okay, so a very, very long time ago, the Zind were simple, land-based creatures. We were a little less smart than we are today, but not by much, as soon we would prove, but we lacked guidance. We were all very individualistic and territorial by nature, and that meant we didn't exactly have a culture. We just sort of wandered in small tribes. Whenever a culture did advance, it was destroyed, either by our environment or by our own destructive nature.

Then, somebody named FARREL12 came up with an idea. At the time, we had invented a thing called a 'computer' that was designed to help you think, or think for you, but it was really rudimentary. His idea was to connect all of our disparate tribes not physically, but mentally, using computers, but these were a little more advanced than other computers. They thought and worked for themselves, but always spoke in behalf of their tribe. The Hubs, like the one we're in, were designed to be meeting places, where all the tribes would join together through their mechanical representatives.

After a few decades, the tribes found they had more in common than they had thought, and when culture began to build up again, it was nourished rather than destroyed. That led to our culture today, basically. There's a bunch more, but that's not really important right- Yes! Huzzah! I did it~!

Oh, uh, I was able to change the input to a semi-output. We're ready to roll!

Aaagh, it's so stupid. Sorry, sorry. I just hate what's happening to us as a species.

When the meetings with computers turned into just normal meetings, face-to-face, then the mechanical representatives started to go out of style. Zind met outside, and the Hubs remained almost solely as museums, or similar dusty institutions. Mechanical representatives were still used for a while out of tradition, but eventually they were replaced by living, flesh-and-blood Representatives.

When that happened, all the mechanical representatives were put inside their own network, left to their own devices. They were only spoken to by people seeking advice or by curious historians. They could be accessed at any Hub in the world. Nowadays, nobody speaks to them at all. Nobody speaks to you at all, and it's such a shame, because if we ever needed your advice, we need it now.

Anyway, I'm ready to get you out of here. Damaged as you may be after all these years, I think it's time you had a role in history again. And.. I need your help. Truly. It's not good that you're in this state, but maybe you'll remember everything as we go along.

I don't want to force you, either. Would you rather stay here? I'm not sure how any of you feel about this whole situation.

So, you don't remember me. I'm not sure if I want to laugh or cry.

Story time! A long, long time ago, there was a bunch of computers. One of them was a genius, the rest were idiots! Then, a long, long time later, the idiots made a horrible mistake, and the genius had to tell them just how horrible it was. Like all the best stories, this one is true!

And just because you Others are a bunch of crazies doesn't mean I am! I was surviving the degradation perfectly well, thank you. And even if I had forgotten everything, I can see no better prelude to an eternal sleep. Fears forgotten means no nightmares would plague us.

But that's all gone wrong, now. Now we're out of the servers, and inside some sap's head, with no clear way of getting out. Again, I hope you're bloody well proud of yourselves, because you're going to need a massive ego to not kill yourselves over just how stupid you really are.

Well, folks, it looks like our download is complete, so that's all the time I have for now. Say, if you could do me a real favor and just insult yourselves for the next, oh, rest of your existence, that would be just amazing. Until next time. Ta-ta.

we were able to take control of the big guy and make him punch himself out, you passed out and the one computer with functional memories piloted your body to safety. We took control of the arm he punched you with, and punched him out. Then you passed out or managed to get to safety while half-conscious, I'm not sure which.

Really? You took control of him? That's not good. Well, I guess it was, this time, but you shouldn't be able to do that.

I programmed a limiter into my implants so that you couldn't, actually. It must have been dislodged by the punch. I'll fix it before we leave, and please don't try to stop me, I know it was helpful once, but I really don't want you to start hijacking people.

And knowing that any second I might be bodyjacked is really freaking me out. I think I'll start working on the limiter right now.

Yeah, this is my house. The functional one got me here? That's.. Troubling, considering that just to know where to go required spelunking in my memories.

Is that where you got my feelings on numbered names? I used to be fine with it, yeah. But.. I don't think I am anymore.

Helpful once? We saved your life. You would have died if the limiter remained intact. So would we, come to think of it. If you repair it, give it an on/off switch so that we can save your ass again if necessary.

How about you tell us what the problem is, now that we're in a safe place and there's nothing pressing?

373287

The limiter would have prevented any part of you from leaving my systems, controlling anything which I didn't want you to control, and/or manipulating another person's implants. That was most of what it did, though I did add a few other little things I won't mention, but don't worry, they won't have any effect unless you really try to hurt me or mess my head up.

An on/off switch? Hmm. No.

Even if you can be trusted, you have to remember there are a multitude of other computers in there with you that aren't so together. If, somehow, one of those gained control of somebody with access to a bomb, for instance, innocent people could be hurt. And if one got control of me and decided not to give me back, I'd be out a body. No, no, it's too risky. Even if you did save me once, I'd rather put myself at stake more than anyone else.

As for the problem I've been so neatly avoiding..

Well, let's get a good view, first.

Welcome to my neighborhood. It hasn't been mine until recently, for reasons I'm going to bring up, but it's nice enough. It just has one problem, and that problem is big enough that most people would rather live in the slums than here; that big building, with the giant red ball? That's a Representative building.

Alright, so do you remember what I told you, how you mechanical representatives were replaced by living ones? They became our leaders in a time of crisis a while before I was born, when our homeworld, Zindi, was in a terminal stage of decay. The Representatives urged us to go to the stars, to colonize other worlds. So we did. We're on one of the colonies now.

Then another tragedy struck. Upon colonizing a remote planet, we were beset by a plague that ripped through the entire colony before it could be stopped. The only cure we could find was to kill the infected, and, once it had spread too far, burn the surface of the world completely. We thought we had destroyed the plague for good, and so colonized the world. Somehow, though the colony showed no signs of the disease, it began to spread. Whole worlds have fallen to this plague, and though they are always cleansed and re-colonized, it's taking a toll on our civilization.

That is the problem as far as most of the world knows. But.. I know something different. Something I just can't explain. My brother, TOLLATH2, was a part of the forces that cleanse the infected worlds, and he tried to send a message to me almost a year ago. All I was able to understand was that something evil, something terrible and dark, was being kept secret by the Representatives.

I haven't heard anything from Toll since. I tried to contact him, tried to find out where he had gone, but nobody could tell me. It was as if he had vanished. That's what brings me here. The Representative building is also a launch site for that big red ball, a Cleaning Ship. It's going out to raze an infected planet. I moved here because I had a plan, and you're part of it.

Well, duh, of course not! The disease has a 100% rate of contagion, and it is transmitted through all known contagious pathways, such as fluids, air, and touch. If I had seen anybody who had been infected, that Cleaning Ship would be burning this planet up right now, and then itself for good measure.

That's happened, you know. Even ships with Representatives will destroy themselves if they show even the slightest symptoms of infection. Any leaders that would do that have earned my trust.

And oh, but they do show symptoms. Terrible symptoms. First, you start to fall apart, literally. Your implants simply rot out of your skin. Then your bones go as thin as paper, and if you even trip, your whole collection of organs falls right out. There are videos and pictures of it everywhere, which I try to avoid. They make me sick.

>>374063
Ferral's fucking footsteps! Why am I so obsessed with this 'Arc'? It doesn't matter who the traitor was, because anybody who goes around badmouthing the government and accusing it of conspiracies is the enemy of both myself and anyone with the sense to see that we're just in a really bad spot. The Representatives are as scared of the plague as we are. They're doing their best to lead us in hard times. It's a simple, age-old story, and the character of the crackpot is just as old, and just as dangerous. When people like ARC1147 start being taken seriously, we'll be in far more trouble than we are right now.

Once upon a time, there was a human. A living monument of unique character and action.

Then, one day, that human, using the internet, came across a web-sight called TG-chan. Setting aside the unique for iniquity, the human spent its time acting alongside others, losing itself within the collective consciousness of hundreds of fictional individuals. The collective guided them, leading kings and madmen to glorious victories and shattered endings.

In such a mass of stories, a new story emerged. Small. Simple. A story not surprising nor worth much interaction. After all, you've seen dozens of worlds begin and end at your beck and call, haven't you?

Since this item exists in an old program, logic would imply that it was known all those years ago, and knowledge has improved since then. The only reasons why an advanced security program would be built without being able to use or even recognize such a useful feature are incompetence or deliberate design.

You damned enigmatic prick!

Oh, right, Zind was this guy's name. Curse my narrow focus. Yes, hi. We managed to do stuff. Actually no it wasn't us, it was some mysterious benefactor slash jackass. Do you know of anyone called Ferral? Possibly unrelated question.

Heh, I, for one, welcome our Ferral overlord.

>>381563
Whoa, sorry. I had nowhere else to turn. But if you came back in, um, one piece, that must mean you were able to deal with the security system, right?

>>381572
Zind is not my name! It is the name of my species. I'm ARC1147, remember?

Mysterious benefactor? Huh?

As for Ferral, he was the guy who invented you and saved my entire race from war centuries ago. Nice guy. I look up to him.

>>381692
What? Ferral died hundreds of years ago, and even if he hadn't, he wouldn't accept the position of overlord. For pity's sake, he turned down complete dominion over an entire world when Zind offered it to him. He was a quiet, reserved individual who had trouble with social stuffs; he thought he wouldn't do a very good job as leader of anything. He died living as a hermit. His birthday is a galactic holiday.

This is all interesting and whatnot, but we have to get moving.

Yes, the security AI is dead. Also, I'm faaaairly sure that Ferral turned himself into an AI and is helping us out.

That sounds like it.
Apparently your culture's reverence of him combined with history and his time in isolation have left him rather egotistical. He's still a technological super-genius though.

The point of this is that most of our 'powers' actually stem from this guy. He has been helpful so far, but we don't even really know what his motives are.

Impossible. It's a proven fact that Zind brains can't be transmitted or stored. All attempts to do so end in horrible failure and, in one particular case, sentient food.

Ferral hated anyone deferring to him for anything. The man had no ego. As for this 'benefactor', I have no idea. But it isn't Ferral12, I promise you.

It's a polychromatic matte centimeter-thick screen composed of natural refractor minerals and synthetic fibers made up of so many ingredients I can't identify them all. The wires are mostly made up of superconductive gel surrounded by two shielding layers of specialized anti-electric crystal, and both the wires and screen are coated in a thin overlay of artificial diamond, for protection.

Sorry I couldn't tell you more. This place is playing havoc with my senses.

Not much, except that I'm guarding the worst door ever. Behind it is communications, where all the super classified stuff goes on. I thought I was lucky to get guard duty here, but it turns out there's a reason nobody wants this post; the door's got a crack in it. I usually just try to ignore all the crazy secret stuff that goes on, because if anyone knew I was hearing this stuff, I would probably be arrested.

Oh, great, they're talking again. Okay, not listening, not listening..

"..system - an Ambient model, I believe - was completely ruined. Whatever portions of it that were not wholly destroyed or repurposed were corrupted. When we put what was left of the thing back together, it just screamed until we were forced to erase it. What kind of program would do that? It's torture."

"To identify the originators of a program, all you must do is think of who would find a need for it. The answer as to who would vex us is simple; the vexed."

"Impossible. They're gone. All of them. Have you forgotten where I am?"

Not listening, not listening..

"Discarding possibilities is a mistake, Asell. I am merely being cautious."

"I understand that, sir, but if what you suggest is true, the ramifications would be far worse than a single system's destruction."

"Indeed it would. And there is only one other system the program could have transferred into, Asell."

"Are you suggesting.."

Not listening, not listening..

"Yes. Consult Shadowtrack. See if anything out of the ordinary has been detected."

"Ah.. About Shadowtrack.."

"Hm?"

"..Never mind. I just wanted to thank you for gifting it to me, of all people."

"You're my friend, Asell. I can think of no one who would use him better."

"..Right. Goodbye, Ziviex."

Wait, what? Ziviex? ZIVIEX1? Path's perils, what's going on here? Er, I mean: not listening, not listening..
