Sky and Spikesby have located Heartsbane and Glory.

Spikesby has no orders, he's free to go wherever he chooses!

Heartsbane seems uncomfortable around Sky, but accepts her presence after a terse explanation.

"I want to find out more about this soul of yours, Snikt. I've heard things, but I've also investigated that other golden. He was taken by some of Ryxix's snikts. I think they have been following you, waiting for the chance to get revenge on behalf of their master. I don't know what he wants with that Golden, but it will be an arrow, aimed directly at your destiny.

I am taking this golden,"
Glory fidgets slightly, "and going to see the Lord of Marvels. I have heard that he is fair and generous for a Wizard, and has vast stores of arcane knowledge. I think it would be best if you went somewhere safe for a while. Moriga is neutral and does not interfere with her own lands. You could travel by sea, or overland through Arcus Soulfire's territory. I would avoid flying. It would make you a highly-visible target.

Soulfire is also said to be both knowledgeable and fair. You could also head South, across the Queen of Sorrows territory. Goldlust lives on the edge of the world, but is known to be vicious and cruel. I will find you when I am done, and I hope to see you alive. We must offend the heavens together, spit blood into the eye of fate."
.

Where does Spikesby want to go? He can, of course, travel anywhere he likes, not just to the places that Heartsbane has suggested.

I am probably going to leave this up all night, and start updating tomorrow. This is a huge decision for Spikesby to make, and will greatly affect the course of the quest as a whole.

Soulfire sounds like a pretty cool dude. If nothing else, it sounds like nobody's going to try to fuck with us when we're in his territory.

I'm just trying to think of a safe place to go, though, as Heartsbane suggested. If anyone has a plan to, you know, do something, then I'll be quick to agree with it. I think Spikesby deserves a rest, though, at the very least.

Go to Moriga via Soulfire's territory. We may be able to lose our pursuers there; travel by sea means that they just have to know what the destination is, and with that Golden helping out Ryxix there might be flying hybrids to deal with.

Maybe we could visit Soulfire on the way over, and see if we can get her protection in exchange for something.

Spikesby decides that it is safest to travel to Moriga's territory overland, by way of Soulfire's domain. Heartsbane is informed when everyone hears an earsplitting roar!

Sky shouts.
>"Shit! Oh shit! Breaker must have noticed I'm gone. We've got to fly! Fly!"

Heartsbane cackles madly!
>"You have a knack for heaping trouble on trouble, pain on pain! Every instant you survive is a miracle! Struggle! Struggle!"

Everyone is starting to panic!

At first Spikesby panics too! They have to fly! Heartsbane and Glory flee.

Suddenly, Spikesby realises that Flails Breaker has no idea where they are! He tackles Sky and calms her, pointing out that flying will only make them a target. They disappear into the trees instead.

Blasts of white flame pierce the sky, accompanied by more earth-shattering roars of rage.

They will be at the border soon.

"I need to tell you," says Sky, "everyone in Flails Breaker's land gets rewards and magic from Flails if they turn any of his escaped creatures in. Like me. Even when we get across the border, Soulfire discourages people from taking us in as refugees. that's why I got this disguise, but we're gonna have to be extra careful."

Sky and Spikesby travel for several days, being extremely cautious and avoiding cities and villages.

Eventually, the landscape changes. The land becomes more flat and even, there are fields instead of forests.

They see a huge sprawl of what looks like trash, but on closer inspection they appear to be shacks cobbled together out of garbage.

Several blockheads peer quizzically out from doorways and windows.

The middle of the settlement has a huge swath of destruction down the center and is littered with the corpses of blockheads in various states of dismemberment.

A lone blockhead stands outside, looking forlornly from Spikesby and Sky, then back to the huge pile of bodies.

"Huh," says Sky, "I wonder what is going on here. We should be safe from Breaker. Do you want to check it out?"

Sky walks up to the blockhead in the robes, seeing as how they can't understand Spikesby.

The blockhead explains.

"Oh, it would be nice if you could do something, but I can't see what that would be. I'm the adept for this community. Some creature from Flails Breaker's territory wandered in and just started smashing things and ripping people apart. I've been trying to make sure no one goes up to it, they keep wandering over there to see what is happening even though I tell them the thing is just going to kill them," he sighs deeply, "then they keep trying to collect all the corpses, but it just stomps back over here and tears more of them apart. Really, though, we're just hoping it goes away on its own, but it would be great if you could do something."

Yeah, we should check this out. At first, though, we should just keep our distance and observe this thing while trying not to get its attention. Get an idea of what we're dealing with.

Though, as this is one of Flails Breaker's creatures, it may be looking for Sky. We should probably keep her the hell away from the thing for as long as possible.

Spikesby decides to leave Sky behind, just in case it is searching for her. He doesn't think it would be a good idea to drop on it before he even knows what it is.

He sneaks as stealthily as he can down the alley full of debris and body parts, soon, the creature comes into view. It is rather large, and is covered in heavy, gleaming carapace. It is currently pulling a blockhead's head off...

It doesn't see him, but he hears it, speaking in snorts and grunts, but he can understand it perfectly.

The only way I can see Spikesby killing that thing is by getting on top of it and going for the aforementioned eyestab. The piles of garbage nearby could be utilized for this purpose.

While doing so, engage it in conversation, while trying to fit in several things:
-Spikesby most likely smells odd because he has a soul.
-If it is just going to continue indiscriminately eating people, then, yes, we are here to fight.
-Why the hell is it here, anyway? Did Flails Breaker send it?

Spikesby feels something warm and wet splattered against his back.

He is trying to stand, but it's difficult. He- he needs a second to catch his breath. Talking to it might at least distract it.

Spikesby isn't so sure he should go around telling everybody that he has a soul, but it probably can't hurt to tell this thing. He says he's still a magical creature just like it, it's just that he has a soul.

>"Oh, that's cool I guess,"
says the monster, as it rises to its feet.

Spikesby asks the creature why it's here, did Flails Breaker send it?

>"Daddy made me to fight with! We fought one time, but Daddy won. He just left me there so I decided to go look around. I eventually found this place and its full of these squish things."

It begins lumbering toward him.

Spikesby tells the creature that Flails Breaker is on a rampage, and it might not be safe here.

>"Oh, Daddy is coming? Awesome! I can't wait to fight him again!"

Spikesby thinks he's more agile than the monster, but it isn't a lumbering behemoth by any stretch.

He is in the middle of the city, there are inhabited buildings on all sides except for the direction he came from, which leads right back to Sky and the adept. He doesn't think he will be able to pierce it's armor, except for maybe on the joints and possibly the eyes as well. If he actually intends to fight this thing, he's going to need some kind of strategy.

Okay little...monster...buddy. You gotta bring this thing to daddy. I know it sucks, but this means bringing it past your new friends. Above all, you need to keep it's attention.

Don't make an attack inward, but keep feinting inward and focus on dodging the attack. Keep this up, and try to lead the thing further away from the city, and towards Flails place, if anything this thing can slow Flail down if he has been tipped off by the locals yet. In other words, lead it out of the city, and then run fast.

Spikesby decides to engage it, he's more agile, after all, while he tries to get it to go south.

Spikesby informs it that Flails is looking for the monster as well, and indicates South.

>"Okay, I'll head back that way after we fight some, I guess. You look like you still want to fight!"

Spikesby avoids it's grabs and bites, as well as the vicious blade on it's tail and manages to slice into its elbow joint, it's a shallow cut, but at least he wounded it.

He is trying to draw it back down the swathe of destruction, even though this will lead it toward Sky and the adept. The only other path would be straight through some densely packed houses.

>" After this fight if you don't die we can squish some of these squish things. What are they, anyway?"

Spikesby takes the opportunity to leap for the eye. Instead of attempting to pull out of the way, the monster's headbutt slams Spikesby to the ground.

Spikesby crawls back. He thinks there are things that are possibly broken.

The adept is surprised to see him.

>"I can make your wounds heal a little faster, but it isn't much"
he says.
>"I'm sick of this place, on the border here, constantly attacked by monsters... What wizard do you serve?"

Spikesby is feeling pretty awful. Sky kneels down behind him and starts cleaning off the blood. This is certainly not even close to the healing power of Glory's blood. He doesn't feel any different at all.

The adept continues.
>"Yeah, Lord Soulfire makes some of us into adepts and keeps us watching over the other blockheads in his territory. We always must sacrifice our foolishness, so the power we gain as an adept is really pretty pitiful. I'm a transmuter and the best I can do is heal sniffles or really minor injuries. Sky translates for Spikesby, asking about getting a new eye, about Soulfire, and about getting more magic. Sky also says that Spikesby is from Blacksoul, but he's basically a free agent at this point.

The blockhead explains:

>"I could try sacrificing something else, I guess. I don't know if that would work or not. I can't go running around wherever I please, though. I have to take care of my charges, unfortunately."

>"Sorry, I can't do anything about that eye. The limit of my magic is basically curing really minor wounds, like I said. You'd have to find a real transmuter, probably a Golden or something, to be able to actually replace a lost organ like that. Of course, any wizard could do it."

>"Once you cross the river, things will be a lot more organized. Lord Soulfire created us blockheads to be his citizens, working hard and building. Lots of Gour and Ravians live in his territory too. We don't really allow Breaker's constructs to settle, though, because that would cause tensions between Breaker and Lord Soulfire. He doesn't want them trying to run to Lord Soulfire's territory constantly. Soulfire kills any big monsters that wander in himself, and anybody can go talk with him if they have problems. He's really smart."

Sky thanks the blockhead for his information.

"Spikesby, I think it would be best to just fly across the river when we get there, unless you really want to find some other way across."
>>

Flying should be a last resort, I think. Ask the Adept where the nearest bridge is. If it's pretty close, it's probably best to use that.

Really, I don't think there would be any harm in flying across the river. If we're really that concerned about it, then we can just try to stay low, at around 20 feet or so.

When we get across, I think we should see if Soulfire can do something about that missing eye. From what we've heard, he seems alright.

Now, this isn't really a suggestion, but I'm guessing that, judging from the looks on those blockheads' faces, blockheads are created completely clueless, and these Adepts, who sacrifice their "foolishness", act somewhat like shepherds. Would I be correct in that assumption?

Oh, and don't forget to ask for the Adept's name before we leave, and thank him for the healing. Wouldn't want to be rude.

Spikesby asks her to ask about bridges.

"You know what, Spikesby, I'm not going to ask him about bridges. I want to fly."

>"Oh, there aren't any. Lord Soulfire doesn't want people from Flails Breaker's land coming into his. There are a system of ferries instead."

"We aren't taking the ferries. We're flying. Besides, you're wounded."

Spikesby thinks about Master Blacksoul. He always made his adepts regret their decision to make a sacrifice to him. Even those who made a sacrifice just for a boon instead of for power regretted it. He is much more interested in reaserch, in finding a way to push back the Sea of Oblivion, than in amassing followers or developing his domain. Spikesby thinks maybe he takes the things he takes both because he uses them in his alchemy as well as to keep people from coming to him.

Spikesby doesn't know how much Master Blacksoul would care about his soul. He knows that Blacksoul treasures the few freely given souls he has received.

There are several places Spikesby could go once he crosses the river. Does he want to just travel through Soulfire's domain, or does he want to go to the capital city and try to talk to Soulfire himself? Soulfire's domain is made up of many huge, bustling cities. Eustice, the Adept, informed Spikesby and Sky they should travel what is called the Long Ocean Road. It is a scenic road, out of the way, and wends eventually to Pinnacle where Spikesby intends to at least get a look at Arcus Soulfire and perhaps ask for an audience.

The Long Ocean Road avoids most of the major cities, and is the quickest way to Pinnacle because it is little-used.

They have passed through a few mid-sized cities, and are now arriving at the open gates of the next place down the road. Something seems off. The overcast sky hangs like a sheet of lead over the silent city.

Sky can carry the gun, but she doesn't think she'd be capable of shooting it because of the shape of her hand. She could also put on the jacket, but she'd have to take her robe off.

She doesn't hear anything at all coming from the city.

Sky uses the sight on the rifle to inspect the city. It looks abandoned - Completely devoid of life. Sets of clothing are scattered all around; in open doorways, on the street, draped on rooftops or on benches. No lights are on.

The field phone comes to life when Sky switches it on, but there is only static. Sky thinks she can make out the radio tower in the distance. These things are only big enough to communicate inside the town, though.

She pockets the field phone, the scope from the rifle, and the crackers and leaves everything else.

Okay I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Soulfire teleported everyone suddenly for some reason.

This isn't Soulfire's city. The Long Ocean Road just goes through here. Pinnacle is still a few days away.

Sky doesn't see any big black thing. This city looks like it's been abandoned for a while. This... this is totally creeping Sky out. She flies back down to Spikesby.

Sky gladly ascends. They begin to circle the city. From this height, the whole place is exposed. The center is taken up with the stacked clay cubes where the blockheads live, surrounded by the expanse of the city proper. The whole thing is totally silent and nothing moves. No scavengers or even animals can be seen within. No large creatures are visible either. The largest structures look like some huge silos next to the northern entrance and what might be a factory next to an artificial lake.

Spikesby feels strongly inclined just to leave the whole thing alone, but he decides to take a quick peek at the broken wall section before moving on.

When he lands, he notices huge, circular patches where the grass is simply gone, exposing the sandy soil. Black ooze clings to the broken section of wall. The huge majority of the fragments are outside of the city.

A feeling of sickness and dread floods Spikesby's senses as he smells the strong odor of the black ooze. It smells awful and wrong.

Sky is shaking.

>"What is this? It... it feels awful. I feel like I can't get a good breath here, like I'm choking."

Spikesby recognizes the smell. It's just like the town in Radia's territory, with the mass suicide, where everyone else was just gone.

>"Let's just leave,"
Says Sky
>"I just want to go anywhere else. Let's fly straight to Pinnacle."

Sky leaps immediately into the air as soon as Spikesby agrees to fly.

Spikesby points out some confusion regarding magical creatures. Ophians and Blockheads were created by Wizards, but they aren't magical creatures.

Sky explains

>"Everything a Wizard makes isn't a magical creature. Only something that has characteristics or abilities beyond what it is able to do solely through biology counts as a magical creature. Your skin is supernaturally tough, your swords are supernaturally sharp, and you don't need to eat. You also heal pretty fast. All of Breaker's creatures are magical creatures. We have to be tough and resilient to be able to survive any..."

She trails off

>"Anyway, if a Wizard wants to release an entire species they've made, they can do that too. When Kshaara was killed, the Ophians lost any supernatural powers they may have had. They'll never get them back either, no matter what, unless some other Wizard wants to go and change them all one by one.

>I'm sure you also know that magical creatures can all smell souls, and can all talk to each other even if they can't physically talk. So, just because something is made by a Wizard doesn't mean it's a magical creature, but all magical creatures are made by Wizards."

They continue onward uneventfully. They should make good time to Pinnacle.

Spikesby asks Sky to call for a gatekeeper. She gives a halfhearted "hello," and almost immediately a Gentleman appears, pushing its body through the barrier.

Spikesby knows about Gentlmen. They are magical creatures that Master Blacksoul created himself. Master Blacksoul must have given this one to Soulfire. Gentlemen are mostly made of thaumaturgical energy, making them almost impossibly to injure conventionally. Because Spikesby's body is impregnated with magic, though (making his swords sharp and his body hard) he can still chop into it if he needs to.

Sky seems rather taken aback. She seems on the verge of fleeing.

Spikesby asks the Gentleman if he can meet with Arcus Soulfire or at least fly over the walls.

Spikesby has no idea how exactly to go about calming her down.

He explains about the creature in Radia's territory and about what he discovered in Septus.

He explains that the creature isn't an absence of magic, rather it seems to be the antithesis of magic - a power that somehow opposes or counteracts magical energy, and magic does the same to it.

Soulfire speaks.

>"YES, SNIKT, YOU ARE QUITE ASTUTE. LET ME EXPLAIN SOME SCIENCE! TO YOU. ALL MAGIC COMES FROM US. WE ARE FONTS OF ENERGY THAT INFUSE THE AREA AROUND US WITH MAGIC. THIS IS WHY OUR DOMAINS CAN CHANGE DEPENDING ON OUR CHARACTER. DURING THE WAR, CREATURES APPEARED THAT SPREAD DARKNESS IN THE SAME WAY. He pauses, seeming to consider whether or not to say more.

Soulfire Speaks.

That might work. But every wizard we've met so far was at the very least unconcerned with the well being of other creatures and more than a bit over dramatic. Somehow I don't think she could deliver the message without have Blacksoul pop up in front of her or jump down from his tower or something.

Ask Sky if she wants you to stand guard so she doesn't get assaulted while in this condition, and if there's any way to help her get better faster. Blacksoul should probably not be told that we're cultivating a soul now. We were his minion and he could get upset about losing control.

Like everyone's saying, stay with Sky until she's feeling better. When she's in more of a talking mood, ask her if there would be some way to cure her of her... condition. The whole "squirming around on the ground drooling every time she talks with a wizard" thing isn't all that convenient.

Also, on a semi-related note, how would everyone feel about getting one of Spikesby's blades transmuted into a hand? We could also throw in some retractable claws, to make up for the lost weapon.

Spikesby opens his left eye for the first time in quite a while. Everything looks blurry and crappy out of it, but he supposes it's better than nothing.

He sits down and does his best to keep Sky from thrashing around so much. She can't stand, and can barely do more than writhe. He asks if there is any way to possibly cure her.

>"A wizard could probably do it"
she mumbles
>"Someone who is good at Mentalism."

Sky's seizure eventually quiets and she begins to drift off to sleep.

>"Just let me hold you for a minute"
she whispers
>"It's nice to touch somebody..."
If she was going to say something else, her slumber snatches it away.

Spikesby sees no harm in waiting until morning to leave.

Sky flies high above the Desert of Ruin, exulting in the hot wind rushing past her face. Flying! Flying! The glorious feeling of soaring above the world fills her with inner warmth.

She misses Spikesby. It was ... nice to be held gently, to be touched without being grabbed and squeezed, pinched and violated. She misses him, but she knows it is a simple, physical comfort and nothing more.

Besides, she can FLY!

Something interesting is happening to her left, and she senses a lot of magic over there, but she is more than far enough away not to be affected. She can't really tell what is going on, though. She doesn't know if she should try and check it out or not.

I'm gonna keep what I saw in mind, but it's more important to get to Blacksoul as quickly as possible. I can't help but wonder about what the monster is hiding under the sand down there, and curse Breaker silently.

I fly, FLY! as fast as I can, and in a few brief days sunlight becomes a hazy half-shadow, blocked by the massive wall of the Sea of Oblivion. I feel winds of magic stirring, roiling out of what must be Blacksoul's tower. Now, they don't affect me, but soon I won't be able to control myself.

I decide to go up to the front door. This horribly-done magical effect that made it easy for Breaker to do whatever he wanted with me isn't going to make this task particularly easy. I can already feel powerful waves of magic washing over me.

Something approaches. This thing must be made out of magic. It gets kinda hard to breathe.

"I.. I have a m-message for Zorsuz Blacksoul. There is s-something wrong with me that m-makes it impossible for me to tell him though. If he g-gets rid of it, I can d-deliver the message."

A sepulchural voice echoes from somewhere in its misty body.

>"I say. Quite the predicament. I will inform the master, please follow me."

I-I think I can hold on, I've got to think about something else, something to keep me grounded so I can focus and force down these horrible tremors welling up inside of me.

Flying! flying! the warm air caressing me as I soar! A-ah... I'm just gonna take off this hood.

Grounded, I need to think about how exactly I'm getting to Morriga's and what I'm gonna see. Yeah, that helps some.

Maps, yeah, it would be hard to draw maps while I was flying.

And uh, blockheads. They're so shitty.

That helps. yeah. Being cold. I have to counteract this awful heat. Cold and alone.

But I'm alone and cold when I fly through the empty sky. Flying! YES!

Sorry, mortal minds could never influence a Wizard

I... I feel different, aside from the fact that I can't feel magic down there. I can see the sea of oblivion roiling through the window outside.

Where am I? What's happening?

Blacksoul... He chills me. I must have been hallucinating eariler, seen him in terms of how powerful he is, how much magic he radiates instead of how physically large he is.

I- I had no idea. He annihilates both Breaker and Soulfire in terms of magical energy. Now, to look at him, he looks almost pitiful. I know it's just because I can't feel it, though.

He speaks in a quiet, contemplative voice, as if he has all the time in the world to choose his words, and it is up to me to make sure I catch them all.

You have a message for me from Soulfire? Something about creatures from the Sea of Oblivion? I would be most interested to hear it, but first I have several other questions for you. Take your time in answering. I have prepared a simple repast for you.

You are obviously one of Flails Breaker's creatrues. Tell me how you came to be delivering a message from Soulfire. You were obviously not meant to be a messenger, nor were you intended as a gift from Breaker to Soulfire.

My breath is caught in my throat. His words and manners are pleasant enough, but the cold darkness of his castle, the roiling mass of the Sea of Oblivion outside, the heavy weight of his presence there... I'm at a loss for words.

I tell him the message from Soulfire. I... I don't know if I should say anything about Spikesby or not, so I leave it out for now. I just say I escaped from Flails Breaker and made it to Soulfire's territory. I found the dead town and found out about the monster, and told Soulfire. I was traveling to Morriga's because I know I can't stay in Soulfire's territory.

I can't read the black void where a face should be, or the yellow points of light he has instead of eyes.

He looks at me for a very long time, waiting for me to say more, but my words are a heavy lump in my throat. I eat and drink a little, but I barely taste the food or wine.

I almost don't hear the quiet whisper of his voice.
"I find this news extremely distressing. Something can be done."

He seems to be talking more to himself than to me, his eyes looking inward. I feel his gaze again after more long moments.

"If you have anything you would like to discuss in more detail, I would be happy to do so. After our conversation has ended, a servant will show you to your quarters. In the morning you must inform my allies, and be sure to tell them you come from me. First, you will fly to Childless Meg, and then to the Queen of Sorrows. When you have completed your mission, return here."

I... I have so many questions spinning around inside my head. I don't even know where to start or if I should ask anything at all.

I don't need to ask him about what Breaker did to me. I can't feel magic at all.

I ask him about the creature, and why it eats people.

"All magic comes from us, the Wizards. We generate it from our bodies and it permeates the world around us, like the air you breathe.

During the war, creatures began appearing that produced from their bodies a substance that is the antithesis of magic. Their bodies can annihilate ours, and similarly we are the death of them. After they destroyed utterly many of our kind, those of us remaining ceased to fight among ourselves and turned our attention instead to the monsters. They cannot "breathe" in magic just the same as we cannot "breathe" in their antithesis, and our fields of energy push against one another.

When all of the remaining Wizards banded together and escaped to a peninsula where we could not be surrounded, they could press no further into the combined energy generated by our presence, but their black energy swallowed up what remains of the world.

This creature you found has insulated itself against magic by surrounding its body in a layer of material it creates from devouring souls. As long as it continues to absorb creatures with souls it can persist. It was probably a scout or an experiment. Once my two companions have been informed, we will analyze it further."

I ask him if he took my soul, and how magical creatures can develop them.

He stares at me for a long, long time. I almost think I should stand up or leave, but just before I do so, he answers.

"A Wizard cannot take from you things that are not physical. Those powers and gifts must be freely given to be properly utilized. I could do things to you, add things to your mind or change your body, but I would gain nothing - there would be no exchange. Even if I had such power, you have no soul for me to take. I made sure when I removed Breaker's spells from you. You are a created thing, an empty container to carry out a Wizard's will. Because you are gifted with intelligence and the ability to make decisions on your own, it is possible that a soul could develop there, when you act from sources other than your plain reason. Why do you ask? What do you know about magical creatures with souls?"

I suddenly become extremely uncomfortable. The way he talks, like a teacher to a student, has something removed and dispassionate about it, like I'm pinned to a board and he's doing nothing more than dissecting me.

I ask him why he helped me, and what else he changed.

[i]"I could not get the information I needed from you. The simplest solution was to correct the problem. Soulfire, silly child that he is, was obviously too much of an idiot to understand what was happening to you.

I changed the color of your body. Attempting to alter any of Breaker's transmutations would be beyond me. Unfortunately for all of us, it is an area in which he singularly excels.

You were obviously meant to resemble a luna moth. I made your colors match your body instead of looking ridiculous."

I don't feel mocked or even insulted. Something tells me he thinks of me more as a hammer or a lantern than as an animal, much less a person.

I ask him about the black creatures, and what he does with souls.

"The creatures from the sea of oblivion are mostly mindless animals. Think of them as the equivalent to creatures such as yourself, although the creatures that produce the antithesis itself are alien, but intelligent. A soul is a useful item. I think there is a potential to destroy the antithetical matter using them, as well as several of the other components I frequently acquire. Do tell me about your interest in souls."

He leans in close and I feel his hot breath blowing across my face, slow exhalations that do not disturb the cloth of his hood or the deep darkness behind it. The heat is oppressive, as if he were being consumed with fever.

I tell him that I didn't know what they were. My voice cracks and it sounds like a lie as I say it. I want to sweat, or scream. I want him to move his hand. I can almost feel some sort of dry sickness crawling over my body.

The minutes stretch silently out. His dry breath smells like dust.

I become uncomfortably aware of my body. "My shirt doesn't fit." I say.

"I am having your things laundered now."
he replies in a barely audible whisper, like a sigh from a forgotten tomb.

"Why is it so bad for them to have souls?"

His voice, still the whisper of dead leaves on dry ground, now bears some sort of hard, dark intensity.

"You seem extremely tired. Perhaps it would be best if you went to bed. You have an early day, after all. It is only this: This world will never understand such a creature. All of us who were Wizards long before the war can relate to that."

He says nothing futher, and I am glad to be able to leave.

As I stand, one of his creatures floats silently through the door. I follow as it leads wordlessly, and the light dims behind me.

Blacksoul does not move, and doesn't speak further as I walk quickly out of his presence, but I see the gleam of his shining eyes piercing the rapidly encroaching darkness and wonder...

For a "decent fellow" he has a strange choice of allies.

Childless Meg? The one that collects children and does I dunno what with them?
Queen of Sorrows? The name itself doesn't sound too good, and she shares a territory with Radia and Flails Breaker, two most asshole-ish wizards around.

At the same time, he doesn't think too good of Soulfire, one of the few wizards who actually cares about lesser creatures (at least, that was implied).

And also, don't forget that he steals men's souls and makes them his slaves.

So, no, he's not a "decent fellow". He's a mean and dangerous person, who has no compassion for any other beings whatsoever. He's obviously evil.

He's just not a raving violent lunatic like Radia or Flails Breaker, is all.

You should fess up, Sky. Don't mention names, or specifics, but mention that you have a friend that you believe may be developing a soul. Express any concerns you may have over side-effects of souls, and how they may affect your friendship.

Be honest. Explain that your concern for your friend is why you are hesitant to provide many details, as some of Blacksoul's peers have been needlessly cruel to said friend in the past, even as others have lent aid.

He is the on who actually managed to convince them to stop fighting. You could probably call him an ally of all of them and he has to keep sending them gifts to keep up the peace.

The reason he didn't seem to think that much about Soulfire is that he didn't do anything about Sky's problem. Blacksoul saw and fixed that almost immediatly, Soulfire barely seemed to notice.

He doesn't steal souls. They have to be given willingly for him to use it to combat the ocean of Anti-magic. Which happens to now be spawning things that eat souls.

As for compassion. No I don't think he has that much of it. But then neither does any of the other wizards seem to have that much of it.

Blacksoul isn't nice. Blacksoul is reasonable. That is to say, Blacksoul is perfectly willing to talk with people rather than just remain aloof and dispassionate. That does not mean that he's someone we can just trust though. The dude's still a wizard, and he's used to getting what he wants. He may have been nice to Sky, but remember that he just SAID that he considers magical creatures mindless animals. I'm pretty sure that if we go admitting that we know more than we were telling right now, he would have no problem forcing that information out of us.

The best thing we can do is just deliver these messages and then come back and hope that he lets us go.

Spikesby has found himself in a bit of a pickle. He has wandered into a city that he though was abandoned - it was too large for him to go around.

Inside, he found a variety of citizens all armed with various weapons incapable of piercing his magically-toughened hide attacking him and chanting the name "Ipslaw."

He thinks some kind of Mentalist Golden is outside the front gates, but something in between where he is and where the Golden is is preventing the Golden from advancing further. >"These bits are slums, and this is the market. His monsters and mind-controlled guys are swarming over most of the area in front of us. I am good at shooting, but not a whole lot else, so I'd be more than happy if you could lay out some kind of route.

>"Oh, and if we get too close to Ipslaw, he'll start dominating our minds. I don't know if that'll work on you or not.

The red text represents what Spikesby knows. His orders prevent him from going back.

He also thinks that Ipslaw won't be able to control him because he is already bound to Master Blacksoul, but he doesn't know if that means this Ipslaw guy can't do anything to him or not.

I suggest taking the path marked in yellow, going around the slums in the quickest path to the water tower. Going through the slums might result in getting harassed or worse by the poor folk or gangs or something like this. If taking this route gets us too close to Ipslaw, we can take the route in green, though this route would leave us trapped/easily surrounded if some hostile force in the slums were to attack us.

Does our new companion know anything about the slums and university in particular? Perhaps there's a School Book Depository over on the turnpike we can shoot from.

Spikesby decides that they should head toward the watertower (the yellow path). They rested up and cleaned themselves, had a restful nap and now night has fallen. They head as stealthily as possible toward the first alley, but there are people waiting for them.

It looks like an Ophian with a sword, a Ravian with some kind of assault rifle, and a Golem.

Isenore needs a target! What should Spikesby do?

The Ophian and the Ravian both start chanting "Ipslaw... Ipslaw" over and over as they take aim and prepare to fight.

Spikesby goes for the Ravian! He's blocking its line of fire to Isenore, but it manages to put some bullets into him before she fires.

There is an enormous explosion. The Ravian is thrown to the ground and seems dead. The Ophian is uninjured, and the Golem looks mostly unharmed, even though it was a direct hit.

Spikesby approaches and the Ophian attacks! It's feeble weapon snaps against his magically hardened skin. He slinks quickly away behind the Golem.

The Golem swings and Spikesby barely manages to duck it's vicious attack.

Spikesby dances around the Golem, trying his hardest not to be hit. It isn't fast, but there is no way he could block those massively powerful attacks.

There is an earth-shattering kaboom. This looks a lot more effective.

The Ophian has been looting his comrade, but Spikesby makes short work of him. He peppers Spikesby's arm with a few more bullets, but Spikesby isn't too concerned.

Isenore hurries into the alley. They have made a significant amount of noise and light, and they can hear more things moving out of hiding and into the square. Should they try to skirt around the slums, or just go straight through to the water tower.

Isenore thinks that if they skirt around, it might be faster but the chance of running into more guards is far, far greater.

Spikesby can clearly hear more monsters and mind-controlled citizens, their growls and moans increasing in volume as they approach the water tower.

It's going to be bad. They're going to be completely exposed when they climb up the ladder.

Spikesby is doing great at avoiding everything now, and the cover of night will certainly help, but a plan would be great.

Have the gour fire a high explosive round at something in the distance. Hopefully this will distract people as they go help whatever victims are around or try to figure out what caused the blast.

Spikesby delivers the message and compliments his hat.

"These things are known to me, although Soulfire is incapable of comprehending the extent of my power."

Spikesby asks why he would help and where he should go in the Sea of Oblivion.

"You spin out strands of destiny that travel vast distances through multifarious probabilities. I do not wish to see such a long-suffering and kind-hearted creature such as yourself tied to several of the cruel fates that await you should you remain a Wizard's thrall. Simply travel into the Sea of Oblivion until you meet with one of the Progenitors, the creatures that rule there. They will assist you."

Spikesby points out that he's pretty sure he will die if he goes there.

"I did not say the way would be easy, but worse fates await should you remain here. Now, you should go. Some of your friends wait patiently for you, and others are in grave danger."

Spikesby feels cool waves of magic washing over him as some of his wounds begin to knit.

His eyes close, and the darkness overtakes him.

The Lord of Marvels turns to Isenore.

"Your heart is doomed. The one you will love will never return your sentiments."
