THE DEVIL, DESPAIR, AND DEADMAN’S ARIZONA. CHAPTER ONE.
(horror. mystery. western. comedy.)

Quiet, relaxing days are hard to come by.

In the Arizona Territory, especially in 1882, days like those are typically a blessing. Those of Dead Man Downs, Arizona-- fondly called just The Downs by its residents-- typically take advantage of these peaceful days in the most mundane of ways, like anyone else would at the time. Most use the peace and quiet for taking care of laundry, getting work done, relaxing--

Alpheus Holbrook, the current sheriff of The Downs, does not possesses that luxury. He rarely does, no matter how much he wishes to! The concept of “free time” is all but a myth and legend-- instead, most waking moments are filled with the day-to-day chores of making sure everyone stays alive, or checking that buildings are not on fire...

...Or acquiring odd jars.

Instead of possessing the luxury of free time, Alpheus possesses a single jar, covered in tape. It sits rather nicely on his desk-- and now his day seems to be riddled on figuring out what to do with it.

....And figuring out why it is there.

….And who put it there.

continue to stare at it in the vain hope that will somehow provide some answer or clue to why it’s here.

Then peel back some of the tape to peek inside when the first idea fails.

Alpheus takes some time to stare at the jar. Perhaps it will provide some answers while he stares blankly at it.

He can tell the tape is….. Oh, god, it’s damp. That’s a little nasty. Probably from that gunk as well-- it seems to be… seeping through. Ew? His sense of smell is nowhere near as good as it used to be; this jar kind of makes him think that may be a good thing.

As far as any other cursory examinations go, he can kinda see that it seems to be filled with something light red. Otherwise, not much else.

So. he picks it up.

He doesn’t want to touch the moist tape, because that’s gross, so instead he holds it at the top and bottom. As long as that gunk doesn’t drip, he’ll be fine!

….Although, maybe gently shaking it is a good idea. Maybe it will be possible to hear what’s inside if he just shakes it a little bit!

As if he were waking up a loved one, Alpheus gently shakes the jar. He shakes this jar so gently and carefully that-- ugh, it makes an ugly GLURK noise, not to mention some of the tape seems to have pulled apart.

Eugh. Now the moist tape is loose, jostled free by Alpheus’ careful shakes. He tries to look a bit closer, but the jar is too dark to see through that little peep in the tape.

...He might as well peel back more of it, right? The tape is already lose, so a peek at it wouldn’t hurt.

Gripping the tape with the tips of his fingers (because by the holy God above it is still nasty), Alpheus peels the tape off. Then a bit more. Then a lot more.

And it stares back.

His face pulls into a grimace, because of course that explains what the gunk is. The eye bobs up and down in whatever liquid it is suspended in, still moving from the good shake it had gotten earlier.

Luckily, Alpheus does know a bit about organs, so he can tell that it is rather “fresh.” It could have only been in this jar for a couple of hours, maybe a day at the most, given that it has still got quite a bit of color in it. Looks rather human, too. Or something close to that. He’s not an expert.

He does have more options, though, now that he knows what’s in the jar.

Maybe he can go to the doctor and ask if someone lost an eye recently? If it is a new specimen in some sort of collection, chances are high that it belongs to the doctor-- plus, if someone really did get an eye yanked out, they’re probably getting fixed up there.

Or, he could bring it to the church. Father always tends to have the best and newest information about whatever is happening in the town, so if there’s been any talk about this eye, he is bound to know.

And finally, he could always take it… to the gambling hall. If this got gutted out during some sort of fight, it was probably because of some argument that happened there, and now it is on his desk because someone wants something done about it.

Not a lot of options, but more of them.

Well…. It really would be best if no one freaked out. Or fainted.

It seems like it might be easiest to take it to the doctor-- it’s most likely that she’ll know what to do with it, regardless of who it actually belongs to.

So, Alpheus wipes that nasty gunk off the jar, makes sure the lid is on tight, then wraps the bandages back up around it. Tight, because he doesn’t want it to drip everywhere while he’s carrying this damn thing around.

That would be nasty.

Before he leaves his office, he quickly peeks outside, groans, then grabs an umbrella that’s beside his desk. This is just one out of dozens he owns, but to say it is his favorite wouldn’t be an exaggeration-- it is well worn and used. At some point it had a pattern on it-- if one were to look close enough, they would see interlacing designs of lace along the edge, but those have long since faded with the years. As long as the umbrella still does its job, Alpheus cares little about what it actually looks like anymore.

(That’s a lie. He cares a lot about what it looks like. Why would he keep around an ugly umbrella?)

It takes him a couple of moments to lock everything down, grab the jar, and leave his office. Only a couple steps out and Alpheus already hates it.

It is so. Damn. Hot.

Luckily enough, mostly everyone else seems to have the right idea in not being out on such a sweltering day-- regardless, the heat and the sun do manage to slow him down quite a bit. Even though the doctor’s office seems to only be right down the street from Alpheus’ own office, it takes him a couple of minutes to walk there.

He doesn’t waste any time in creaking the door open and closing the umbrella the moment he hits the shade.

“Aaah, you are a rare sight, aren’t you, Sheriff…?” Masika, the doctor, leans against the counter, lips pulled into a smile. “You usually aren’t one to make your visits during the day, are you?”

Alpheus carefully closes the front door, sighs, then makes his way over. He considers himself lucky that he didn’t have to search for her in the back of the building, at least, so he counts his blessings. “I figured that some things would be best dealt with sooner rather than later, ma’am. I’m not tryin’ ta be out here in this damn heat if I don’t need ta be.”

She laughs, the sound of it slow and rich. “Of course, of course, sweet dear. No need to sound so grumbly.” At that, Masika turns on her heel to face the cabinets behind the counter, picking at the rows and rows of bottles. “What do I owe this visit to, then? Are you finally agreeing to a check-up?”

”Absolutely not,” he answers nearly immediately, quickly placing the jar on the counter before leaning against the edge of said counter, “I’d sooner rather die face-down in a ditch than ask for one a’ those. I brought something to show to you.”

“And you even come bringing offerings this time! Quite a way to outdo yourself.” She turns a bit from the cabinets, if only to take a couple of sniffs of the air-- her eyebrows furrow for a second or two, then she hums. “So, you brought me some spare body parts?”

Alpheus huffs and stares. “It’s an eye. Blue. In some red gunk. Reckon’d it might be yours since it’s so well preserved n’ fresh.”

That makes her smile again. “Do you think I have a habit of losing my spare eyes, Sheriff? I keep them preserved better than that, at the very least.”

Masika pauses again then, thinking for a moment before she turns fully around to face Alpheus, arms crossed over her chest. The smile still lingers, tilted in such a way that only accentuates how everything she says sounds like part of some riddle. “Well, it isn’t mine. Do you plan to give it to me?”

It seems to… well, not be hers, so that is a bust; however, there might be other ways to use her medical expertise to the situation’s advantage.

Give it to her fop safekeeping. She's the expert at eye-storage isn't she? And this jar seems to be leaking.

Anything else she can tell us about the eye would be helpful. It belonged to someone, and it was left in the Sheriff's office for some reason. We'll have to canvas for clues next, but anything she can think of might be helpful.

Might be some prank, just give it to her as a gift and move on with your day like nothing happened at all.
