No idea. I don't think she will, but it all depends on what exactly happens in the future. I try to let the players decide on how she's feeling, which is why she didn't really react to the merchant until Ikar said something and people suggested she lash out at Ikar.

I don't think I'll be updating any more tonight just because I want to make sure everyone gets their votes in. Deciding to join or not join Clan Shigu is one of the major decisions Hatch and Liam will have to make. It doesn't have to be now, but what Hatch says to Ikar here is pretty key. She needs to choose her words very carefully.

Nope. I'm keeping this as free as it can be, if needed Hatchquest will go against canon, meaning anyone can die.

I'll include parts of it in a webcomic to do the "real" version sometime in the future, and that one will fit into the Sidestories canon if Hatch doesn't already.

I'll draw a map sometime if you guys really want to train her to be a fighter.

There's a place near her hometown that would be ideal, but currently you're going completely the wrong way for that. It'd be best to meet Dad at the fort first. And, you know, without Ikar she's going to be pretty lost.

Keep in mind she IS a nevrean though, probably the weakest race on Vilous when it comes to physical strength. While not the worst path to go down, each path is going to have it's disadvantages that will effect Hatchquest 2.

Hatchquest will end once Liam and Hatch fulfill their goals or die. Liam's goal right now is to deliver his message that his town is joining Clan Shigu, if he decides not to do that after all his part will end when he gets back home safely or dies. Hatch's part will end when she gets reunited with Liam/gets back home or dies.

It is very possible to kill them both and you could have killed Hatch in that previous scene, had you done things a tad differently.

Keep in mind that currently, Hatch is relying on Ikar to guide her safely through the forest, she'll get lost without her, and they're currently heading towards the fort.

It is possible to reunite at the fort and not join clan shigu after all, but that would be tricky and possibly not the wisest decision, especially since the agudner have already heard that the town IS joining clan shigu and are trying to kill Liam to prevent him from delivering his message.

I don't think that a good ending is possible, and there is no faction I consider to honestly be villains, but I'm going to be very interested to see what you guys can do.

Addendum: Hatch's part can also end if she goes off training under proper guidance and such like that. I'm sure you guys can figure that out.

So what would be good for her. Some kind of rogue/tech user maybe. Could give her some edge against Sergals.
But if she becomes part of the Shigu clan she might be restricted in her choices, so we'll have to see then.

Well, considering that she's a nevrean, I'd guess that it'd be the best bet to focus more on the ranged and less on the rogue, since going rogue usually involves getting up close and personal, which can be extremely hazardous against something like a sergal.

Hatch won't be updating for a few days while Beakie fixes his computer.

Something has gone terribly wrong hardware wise. Probably either the hard drive or the motherboard.
>>
No. 4876 ID: 3d8e92

Okay, Beakie here.

I am really honestly quite, quite torn.

On one hand, I really like the colored updates I've been doing. I REALLY like how they look, especially the latest few.

But, they just take too damn long. Three hours for one update is too much. I have to update more than that in what free time I have.

My question is, what do you all think? I want a solid, honest vote on whether you want me to continue the colored updates or go with a more simple B/W style? The simpler style would look more like Journey or After Quest, though I don't know about shading just yet. The colored updates would mean that updates would, again, be quite slow, maybe only one or two frames a day.

And if you guys really don't care, I could always do sketch updates and have like twenty a day.

Well, originally Hatch and Ikar were supposed to figure out where Liam and Aruuchi had gone off to, but the majority voted to just plain leave rather than stick around and investigate.

So now Ikar and Hatch are going straight to the fort and Liam and Aruuchi are stuck in the ruins on their own rather than with Hatch and Ikar, which is why Hatch and Ikar's parts are so much shorter than Liam and Aruuchi's parts now.
>>
No. 5680 ID: f8dcc1

For those of you that want to get into hatch but don't want to read through the entire archive I'm going to make a few posts here describing the characters and what has happened so far:

Little One/Hatch is the protagonist, an eight year old nevrean girl.

Liam is her father, the town messenger and other protagonist. He wasn't around often when Little One was younger. He seems to be good friends with Aruuchi.

Aruuchi Nira is a Clan Shigu Scout, he and his family make up one of the scouting parties for the area the quest takes place in.

Ikar Nira is Aruuchi's daughter, currently guiding Hatch through the forest to the fort that Aruuchi and the other Niras base their scouting force out of. She's the one who started calling little one "Hatch" because she didn't like Little One's name and because "hatching" is the only thing significant Little One has done so far in life.

Dekustir is another nevrean a few years older than Hatch, these two played together often when Hatch was younger. When he became a full-time researcher he left the town to live at some of the ruins so that he could become fully focused on his work, learning everything he can from the Zess there, Radou.

Clan Shigu is the Sergal Clan commanded by Rain Silves. Years ago there was a war to unite all of the clans and tribes under one banner, this was successful and Rain now commands the largest and most powerful military force in the world.

The Agudner are the goat-like people currently not at war with Clan Shigu, but there are still several small-scale skirmishes while the bulk of Clan Shigu is focused on conquering the southern sergals of the Sailzane Desert. These people used to have highly advanced technology given to them by the alien race that created all the races of Vilous, but most of them were killed in a huge cataclysm. Nobody's quite sure how this happened. Their lost technology is now sought after by all races for either research purposes or because they fetch a high price to the right buyer.

Hatchquest started out in Hatch's hometown, where she met a funny southern sergal merchant that pretended to not understand a word she was saying. She got her dad to purchase a green hair clip from this person.

A few nights later she woke up to hear her parents arguing with someone she only recognized as a mean lady from down the street, and Liam quickly told Hatch to go back to sleep, Liam is going to take Hatch on a camping trip in the morning.

Liam is carrying a signed treaty annexing their town to Clan Shigu control. Dissenters from the town as well as agudner that don't want their town's researchers and artifacts to fall into Clan Shigu hands are now either actively hunting them or hiring people to do so. The first of such people was a talyxian mercenary, who held Hatch hostage in exchange for the treaty. Liam shot him three times and then slit his throat while Hatch decided to watch, despite Liam's protests.

The two were later seperated when Ikar chased Hatch into the woods and lost track of each other, though both parties knew their way back to the camp. Liam and Aruuchi got there first, gathering some supplies and carving a symbol into a tree telling the kids to meet up at some old ruins down the way, but unfortunately, the kids never saw this symbol. They are going directly towards the fort on their own, while Liam and Aruuchi take a detour through the ruins.

These ruins happen to be the one Dekustir now lives at, with a working video intercom system and several patrol drones in the shape of agudner skulls. These were activated when the rest of Aruuchi's group first went through the ruins. There's still some agudner wandering around the place, and Dekustir and Radou seem to be not too happy that they have visitors.

That's about all that's happened so far.

Oh yeah, and Hatch and Ikar came across the body of the merchant hanging by one leg from a tree, with the mark of the shigu clan carved into his stomach. Inside the tent were more marks of the shigu clan, along with the handprints and names of those proudly responsible.

So how did that Trader taste?

Making fur-coats would depend on the relative strength of humans compared to Sergals and the question if any interest in diplomacy exists.
Making clothing out of people is normally considered a huge faux pas and kinda hard to take back.

Well, in a total war style conflict between Humans and Sergals I could totally see something like this happen.

Generally Sergals as a culture don't have a concept of 'honor' thus the idea of them being honorable (even when measured by their own standards) is ludicrous. They simply have "effective" and "ineffective".

Kills for skills and all that, and if you can pull it off in an amusing manner, all the better.

wars today may be bloodier deathcount-wise, but back in medieval days you had arms chopped off, beheadings, and the like. Personally, seeing a guy in 3-6 pieces (sword) is much more gruesome than seeing him in either a million, or one piece with holes (grenade/rocket launcher/rpg/other guns and modern stuff).
>>
No. 12292 ID: d8aa80

The only real reason wars are bloodier today death count wise is because there are more people.
>>
No. 12293 ID: 8ecfd4

Modern weapons cause some pretty fucking gruesome wounds as well. Most modern assault rifles bullets will start to tumble when they hit someone, making palm sized exit wounds where everything in between has been liquified. Grenades and explosions do rip people apart, and not just into small pieces. You will get arms and legs along with organs littering the place along with the occasional intact head, as well as people who are still alive with their guts strewn all over their place, screaming like the damned. Combat related death is almost never pretty, the ones that get killed by the concussive force of large artillery shells will die without a mark on them, but their internal organs will be fucked up.
>>
No. 12294 ID: cfad4e

I'd argue that brutality isn't just about wounds inflicted. We guide missiles onto targets from miles, possibly thousands of miles, away, through little TV screens. Back in the day, if you wanted someone dead, you had to walk over and kill him. (Arrows would sometimes kill, of course, but would usually wound. They were much less lethal than even early firearms.)

But, of course, this is an unquantifiable argument. In either case, people still inflict a lot of brutality, even close-up, in too many places to list.

The bottom line is that sergal brutality is in no way outside human capacity, or even human norms for much of history. I guess Aruuchi likes painting with blood instead of setting people on fire, but that's a rather trivial distinction.
>>
No. 12296 ID: e77626

Why the heck would anybody hack his enemy into 3-6 pieces? The peasants run forward, hope to stab the others a bit and run for their lifes as soon as a knight or a professional turns up. And the two latter wouldn't waste valuable strength by doing something gruesome to the enemy on the battlefield. Noblemen were more valubale alive anyway, since you could demand ransom.

As somebody already said, being "peppered" by thousands of tiny metal shards which are piercing your body with ~800km/h is not very nice and regular rifle/gun ammo can do nasty things too, if you're unlucky. Also, thank god the use of igniting and/or exploding ammo against soft targets was banned...

If we're talking about punishments / massacres against the enemy after the battle is already won, you're right, though. Parading your enemies' heads through the streets seems to be out of fashion.

But turning back to the quest: Aruchi found signs of clanmates. Who places bets on them being already dead? I know I would.

The family business has been swamping me with work lately, I've been trying to find time to update all week but unable to find a time when I both A) have time and B) aren't about to go to sleep.

The fact that I haven't even been updating SILVERMOON should tell you how busy I've been, or the fact that I haven't even been in the chat much at all.

This is basically my normal day:
Wake up
Shower
Breakfast
Work on the family website and/or whatever busywork needs doing for 5 hours
Lunch/Dinner
Spend 3 or 4 more hours explaining what I did to my father and working on it further with him
On alternate days go to the gym around 6 or 7
Watch The Daily Show and Colbert Report with the family (Not so bad at all)
Come back upstairs around 11 PM, watch Transformers G1 until I pass out.

It's not the worst schedule in the world, but it leaves me very little time to do much of anything, and the few days I get to skip the 3-4 hours of explaining/further working I usually spend playing some game with Lucid or Slowpoke or somebody.

Oh, and no, I don't get paid.

I'd just like to point out that there are plenty of pairs in Hatchquest. Liam and Hatch, Liam and Aruuchi, Hatch and Ikar, Jingles and Tienaye, Radou and Dekustir, Rain and Lord Zyn, Shigu and the insurgents or whatever you want to call Dekustir's group, just to name a few.

You can always ask people in the quest as Liam or ITQ here to get some answers, too.

I don't get you, tgchan. You find a brightly colored girly bird man with purple stockings and you SHOOT HIM IN THE HEAD?

He wanted to hurt sergals. Off course it'd bring tgchan in an uproar.

Brightly colored girly genocidal bird man with purple stockings. I'm sure some people would have tied up Sexy Hitler if there was a chance, but he was armed.

Now the problem is going to be steering /quest/ away from their natural desire to explore mysterious underground facilities and focus on getting the doors open and beating their messenger to Rain. I'm guessing Nevreans can cover ground faster than Sergals over distance, so that pretty much means it's up to Liam, against a head start.

I think the uproar was more over that he wanted to hurt Aruuchi, in particular. And by extension his entire family, including Ikar.

So is Aruuchi worth the lives of the thousands they would save by killing Rain?

Hatch's village was tiny, it looks like it barely has a hundred people in the first thread.

No. 27284 ID: 620bfb

>>337083
But it was OUR hundred people, man! Everyone knows that if the end justifies the means, you're officially Evil. And then later you get destroyed by a bunch of people crowing about love and friendship and you wonder just where the hell it all went wrong.
>>
No. 27285 ID: 14a040

i want to know exactly how his plan saves lives. they piss off the sergals, they strike back really fucking hard, killing not just liam's village but all the villages in like... let's say 500 miles. how many birds is that? and it will leave them without the goal of CONQUEST and the hundreads of tribes will then switch to full on 'do whatever the fuck we want' mode and just kill and loot as they please. just cause they are not unified doesn't mean they aren't dangerous.

The most charitable interpretation I can think of is that the sharkwolves may actually despite Queen Rapealot and would be notably more chill when out from under the grip of her iron crotchtendril.

Yeah...no.
>>

That red bird guy was a stupid overidealistic shitfuck. Queen Rapealot will get what's coming to her someday since apparently she's a normal tactical general and shit and will probably fall on her own.

All are overly aggressive shitfucks, we keeps our friends and family alive and not become aggressive shitfucks, the overly aggressive shitfucks will all kill each other or weaken each other enough that the weaker and less aggressive fucks have an actual chance.

It's all fucked anyway. Fuck it.

It was also established Dekustir was young. Barely an adult, and it's also established he was the follower of someone else. You don't think it's possible he could have been misled, as many young late high school/early college age folk are?

Anywho, in more actually quest related stuff, I think this chapter will be the last time we follow Hatch and Ikar, the plan is to do this chapter, one more with Liam and company, and then maybe an epilogue. It may stretch further than that depending on how things go.

So yeah. Two and a half chapters and the quest should be wrapped up pretty nicely.

Okay, my analysis is this. Mr. Jingles has had a vision in which the possible events transpire. In a Shrodinger's Cat moment he (I think it's a "he") has spotted Hatch and Ikar as being involved in the chain of events. Both of them are easily recognized by the fun-loving plant guy because Ikar's feather-pattern is as distinctive as any male nevrean and Hatch has her characteristic hair-clip. If he doesn't know who the two who have to die are, shouldn't he be able to give a description of them? At least such simple things as species and gender? Is it possible to pin him down on these kind of important specifics, or am I taking the "vision" part of this too literally?
>>
No. 30421 ID: 9cb4b3

He saw Hatch and Liam and recognized them. Nobody else. Jingles sort of lived near the outskirts of Hatch's town for a while, as you can see on the shitty map from the very first thread.

The two who have to die aren't known. One of them could be himself, for all he knows. No gender, no description, no nothing.

There's a LOT of pairs in this quest, as discussed a little earlier in this very thread. Figuring out who those two are is something you guys are going to have to do.

Dekustir might have been one of them, and if he was, you only have to kill one more, if he wasn't, then you might have killed someone unnecessarily, though it's really too late for Liam to turn back now.

I'm also not going to say if both of the "required" deaths will happen on Hatch's side, Liam's side or one on each. There's no telling if only one is required, though the vision did say both must die, and that's rather ambiguous.

Oh, and the fort is not the ruins. The fort is an actual fort on a river. The ruins are an old agudner bunker from before they fucked themselves over.

>you might have killed someone unnecessarily
I can say killing a dumb shithead faction leader (or whatever he qualifies as) that was a viable threat doesn't fall under the category of "unnecessary death". The guy just screamed douchebag throughout that entire part anyway. No loss.
>>
No. 30425 ID: 9cb4b3

>>340224
Unnecessary in that "you didn't have to, and you could have gotten away with not doing it overall" but the way things turned out, it was either him or Liam, so you guys did really good. I really thought you guys were going to get Liam killed there.

Unnecessary also as in not one of the necessary deaths for the good end, not actually completely unnecessary.

She doesn't know about the surrendering part, no. She knows her dad is a messenger though, and that they were attacked followed by the Nira tribe scouts being attacked.

The Nira tribe scouts being Aruuchi and co, who are all members of the Shigu Clan. And just to clarify this, the fort they are all trying to get to is a shigu fort, and this is a shigu army before them.
