Greetings, tgchanites! Tgchanners! Whatever your preferred term is, I have noticed a trend in the past few months in my position as favicon... setting... guy. Favicon wrangler?

That trend being that people appear to not be aware that they can request custom favicons for their quest threads! Historically, you were always able to post a small, 16x16 icon somewhere on the boards, usually the discussion thread for the quest in question, or find some other way of giving a link to the staff, be it posting a link or asking on IRC or what have you.

"But Cirr," I pretend you cry, "what even is a favicons?"

Depending on what browser you've been using, you'll see a small graphical icon somewhere on the tab or window of whatever thread you're currently looking at! As you can see from the picture to the left or above this text depending on your resolution, you can easily identify the quests in question if you're familiar with their icons. This makes browsing multiple quests at a time much less of a pain, and gives the quest itself a little more of a personal touch than that boring placeholder >_ you're accustomed to seeing!

"But Cirr," I envision you perhaps saying in one of countless realities, "my quest ended a while ago! Why should it even matter?"

Well, some day people will read your archived quest, hopefully! Especially if you have a wiki article, hint hint! That's a topic best discussed over here, though: >>/meep/364 And then it will be convenient for them then too! That's right! If your quest is archived, it can still be fitted with an appropriate favicon for easy identification in tabs/windows/bookmarks/whatever!

"But Cirr, 16 by 16 is just too small! I gotta draw BIG!"

Well then are you in luck. This is probably asking for trouble from my perspective, but if you really don't want to make your own favicon, ask me for a favicon in this thread and there is a slight chance I might get around to making one for you!!

Given my notoriously glacial rate of progress, however, I would highly recommend you make your own favicons, however. If I do make a favicon I'll be posting it here first for the requesters to okay or not.

Incidentally, if you don't have a quest discussion thread and want somewhere to post your favicons, you can do it here too!

If you're gonna do one for Asteroid Quest, I would suggest the asteroid for the main threads, and maybe a tiny Polo head and/or helmet for the intermission and Polo quest (like what's used to show position in the maps. ...although you couldn't get away just cropping those out of the updates, they're like a factor of two too large).

I liked the idea of this one, but I thought it kind of needed sharper letters (a blockier font, and a partial shadow, can help them pop at low res).

Tried to tweak the rock coloration too, but I've no idea if I'm happy with it. (Low res rock has the same problem as low res ice- you need to do a semi-random pattern with a few shades to get it to look good, and I always spend way too long fiddling with it).

Just because I'm silly, I went ahead and made bioarmored and un-armored Polo heads too. So if someone really wanted to, we could have progressing icons as she advances through the threads and gets more gear.

Ring's horns are covered by skin. A few people have drawn her with proper horns like a dragon would have or something but they just look like long protrusions. There might be a word for that, but i don't know it.

Okay, I've been shoving favicons into things as requested. I realise that it would have made my life a lot easier if I'd remembered to add the following: a link to each of the threads (quest, archive or questdis) you want favicon'd up would be incredibly useful to me!

Also, re: NSM favicon, still thinking of what the hell to actually sprite. There is a lotta stuff in that quest.

People who are making favicons for other people: you rock and are amazing and awesome and a single tear of gratitude may have been shed or not. Keep up the great work!

Hey, I thought the quest was a lot of fun. Sure, it suffered a bit from bullshit plot syndrome nearer to the end, but one could argue that just made it a more fitting rpg parody. :V

From this point onward please link the wiki article and/or thread URL for your quest if you want your favicon request to be handled promptly. I am not omniscient and cannot know the thread ID for every quest off by heart, unfortunately!

Hmm. Going through and checking, I see some holes (partials, especially, where only part of the quest got the favicon). Not sure if they're some you missed, or if they just aren't refreshing for me. I did try clearing my cache and using a shift f5, so I think these are accurate.

Unfortunately, there's already a Dive Quest favicon! Sorry about that. I've double checked to make sure it's on all of the threads and not some of them.

I actually had an idea about that:
why not start putting the quest favicons next to the titles on the wiki pages?

As someone who tends to have a bunch of quest and wiki tabs open at the same time, I would actually prefer not to do that. Easy visual discriminating between quest tabs is handy, but I'd consider keeping quests vs wiki visually distinct as more helpful than making wiki tabs distinct from one another (and possibly confusing them with their quests). The wiki pages give a useful title in the tab header anyways (unlike threads, which always just label the board).

Oh. Oh.. Hmm.

Okay, after 10 minutes of messing around, I'm surprised to report you could hack that by abusing existing infobox code structure.

I pulled this example off by smuggling an image in with the title-

|title=Lunar Quest <div style="float: left; margin-left: 0.5em;">[[File:Luna_Grin.png|frameless|16x16px]]</div>

You'd have to upload each favicon image manually to the wiki though, I think.

Adding an actual infobox parameter to handle it rather than using an inelegant hack solution would require editing the infobox template, which I'm pretty wary to touch. Especially when I'm not sure how useful this would actually be.

Hmm. That pushes the text off center though, and it's really noticeable and somewhat ugly in pages where the full title / author(s) end up taking up more than one line. Not sure how to stop that.

If you don't want it in the infobox, it's as easy as placing an image in the page. Which is pretty simple.

Or if you mean making them their own little boxed off area in the infobox, instead of forcing it in the title? Yeah, that's doable too- just use prethreads to place 'em.

Not sure I'd bother actually implementing any of it, though. Kinda just makes the page look cluttered. And there's plenty of other stuff that needs wiki-ing.

Alright, there's been some talk of animated favicons recently, and while nothing has been set in stone or talked about to great length, this is what I am leaning to, unless challenged/convinced otherwise:

I'm passing the responsibility to the author. I'll be letting the author have free rein on whether to implement animated icons, similar to how they are usually asked on whether or not they want to allow silly reactionary images or whathaveyou. Whether it's bad or not will be up to the author, and short of it being some kind of seizure inducing or otherwise inappropriate icon, I'll implement it.

Therefore, any and all complaints about the favicon can be directed to the author to try to convince them otherwise; I'll just be the one to throw it up/take it down.

However, while the author has autonomy for their own individual threads, I'll be erring on the safe, mundane side of things for the default site-wide favicon, and won't be implementing an animated version of that. Sorry, Archive.

Again, this is simply how I'm currently leaning, so I'll listen to thoughts/arguments on this topic.

Fair enough. I made a non-animated one to fill in for it, though, since the flat colors and line thickness on the original default fav always looked a little janky to me.
