So I decided to faff about with pressure-size sensitivity, after seeing Lucid put it to good use in the ass day stream. Results are over here: >>/questdis/336936 ; this post has the same thing in my "usual" discrete brush size style for comparison. It's not entirely fair since I did this version first, so the fanart version gains the speed advantage of having the (inaccurate) posing all done. Also the big lines here are done at 100% zoom for speed, the detail lines at 200% because of the way Flash does brush size/zoom interactions; whereas the fanart one is all 200% so the whole pressure range was usable, so will be a little more precise overall.

I'm quite liking the results for a first shot, and it was a lot faster, although having everything positioned will be a big part of that. I don't really have a great deal of idea how I should be varying line thickness along the path, beyond the kind of obvious level-of-detail cases I do with the discrete approach.

(And, yes, I know the anatomy is all skew-whiff. Hoft, in particular, is largely phoned in.)

It looks about a zillion percent better with pressure sensitivity turned on.

I don't understand why you've had it turned off by choice, except to do a solid outline of something. I just assumed that flash didn't work with pressure sensitivity.

On the note of pressure sensitivity, I've recently come to the conclusion that Wacom+Gimp+Mac=No Pressure Sensitivity!

Hopefully I can find some mac native program that will let me use pressure sensitivity (apparently the Gimp port is gimped in that respect.)

Hurrah, feedback. Yeah, I'm liking the difference even if I'm not sure I'd getting it right; I seem to be able to do fine, unzoomed detailing with it that I couldn't just by setting a smaller brush size, which I had previously put down to just being too ham-handed or quantization error. There's an all-100% ten-minute sketch (fifty-minute faffing about) one in ITQ: >>/questdis/336985

I'm used to pressure sensitivity being useless opacity, and previous adventures in Flash's size control when the tablet was new mostly made everything look scruffier. But I've got a bit more control over where things taper now.

Quite likely my quest will switch over to this when I next get a clean breaking point.

Using pressure sensitivity represents a dramatic improvement as far as I'm concerned. Even if you have no idea what the hell you're doing, it just looks so much more fluid.

Switch as soon as it stops being alceris-style. Or even sooner.

I'm not comfortable with drawing people and doing intricate inking. Normally I use color and shading to hide my sloppy work and loose anatomy.

Note that I stole Lucid's style of representing shiny metal here.

I'm also pretty sure the upper torso should be rotated about 10-15 deg clockwise so the right arm works properly, but I'm done fucking about with it. I already spent far too long making the sub-5' knight approximately the right size compared to her warhorse.

Dicking about with approaches to heavy shading. This is >>/questdis/340844 with the shade layer hidden. For thick, heavy lighting like >>/questdis/333321 , I worked by paiting and carving the white regions, which is somewhat tricky to freehand and requires you to keep a lot of shape in your head, but gives very sharp results. The dwarf is instead a scratchy shadow layer, which I think gave a much dirtier effect for a scruffy fortress, and meant I could draw upon a much more concrete framework.

I'm no great artist or an expert by any means, but when I did the linework on Ridder's mom, I noticed that the INSIDE of the lines is more important than the OUTSIDE, because the inside defines the shape of the body precisely.

Here you can perhaps see that I used eraser brush a lot to get the insides of the ink lines almost as smooth as possible, while discarding most of the work on the outside, leaving it somewhat shoddy.

A couple of the best lineart drawers I know do a lot of 'draw bold lines quickly and then erase them meticulously to perfection', and I can see why.

Freehand and angular vehicle practice. No guides, no pre-sketching, no reference art, final destination. I'm pretty happy with the perspective on the 'bot, generic as the design itself may be; dunno if I'll still like it in the morning. :V

Don't expect to see any of this showing up in anything any time soon.
