Frillsby and Gallsby are the most real cops on the force, with fully equipped badges.

Or we did have badges, but something's wrong.

More specifically, an island of stability in the southeastern Wyld, where the edge of the map frays into chaotic liminal space between the cosmological poles of Heat and Life.

The air is so humid and warm, recovering after a hard workout is like trying to breathe chewing gum. Almost anything solid is either poisonous, actively being eaten by some sort of insect or fungus, or both - including your own clothes and skin.

There's a site of great geomantic power nearby, focal point maybe a few hundred yards underground. Up this close even mortals would be able to feel it. Probably worth checking out even if it's not the main reason you came. Tricky part is how to get down there, and dealing with whichever heroes or spirits have already laid claim.

Who are you? What's the plan?

>wood spirit
Hallway beyond the iron bars (which are solidly set into both floor and ceiling, with no 'cell door' or other apparent mechanism) soon turns left into a descending staircase. In the corner, perhaps seven or eight yards past that line of salt set into the floor, there's a natural stone formation which vaguely resembles a sugar-glazed tree trunk, complete with roots and branches along the floor and ceiling.
>Lore 5, Craft (Water) 1
Probably something to do with airflow and humidity making the stone incrementally dissolve and resolidify. Sounds like there's a reasonably large space behind that curtain to the west, with fires kept steadily burning - that acolyte you saw on the way in had a specialized backpack for carrying charcoal. Cold air gets drawn up those stairs and through the bars, warmed, flows out through the hole by the bridge where you came in. Gethemane, City of the Mountain Gateway, has similar sorts of problems: deep passages they'd prefer to fully seal off for security, but can't because they'd suffocate.

Anyway, staring at the tree-like rock, you get an indistinct visual impression of a humanoid figure, first struggling with the bars, then retreating, cowering, and looking toward the other passage in fear. Almost like a particularly vivid daydream.

Grey Locust Scholar nods agreeably at Seventeen Quills, eyeing the scuffle between the other Exalts with confusion.

"I agree with this on principle, but perhaps not as an absolute? I would greatly prefer peaceful solutions where possible, but I can't say for certain that all parties will be open to them. Ah, I would like some acknowledgement of greater authority in matters of vital importance. Like defending the stability of Creation from the Fair Folk. You know, since we are all standing in it right now. And yes, I have taken the Second Breath."

Grey Locust Scholar's motive is to take control of the stable pocket in the Wyld, not sure whether his reasons for doing that are something the charm would pick up on?

Also spending 3 XP, 1 for Martial Arts 2, 1 for Survival 2, and 1 towards learning the procedure for summoning a tomescu. I don't have any idea how much XP I actually have but I feel like I can be fairly confident I have 3.

Patches manages to use the image of suffering to motivate herself out of the hole in her mood she dug... and tries to scoot and clamber closer to the bars. "Are you doing okay?" Patches whispers through the bars, looking at the tree. "You seem scared. ...I'm scared too. It's... okay if you don't want to talk." Patches tries to coax the tree into telling it a bit more about itself, hopefully without being overheard. She's going to rely on her investigative talents to try and discern more information, if the spirit doesn't feel comfortable.

There's no verbal response or even overt gesture, but you get the distinct impression that, beyond the obvious, this dryad is lost in a (by her own naive standards) shockingly hostile environment, like some rich lady's pampered little dog who accidentally wandered off onto the tundra. She wants to make like a tree and leave, but is too weak to be safely moved. She wants you (or anyone, really) to stay nearby and somehow help recover her strength.

"Okay, while we're waiting in a Mass Effect elevator, let's talk strategy. First, I want both of you to be six feet away from me while I'm handling this carbon mother-sodomizer, you in front and you in back. If anyone is so much as forty feet away from us, I want to know. Keep your weapon unloaded, I don't want to see a larp of Plays with Pastels. And I need to use the locker in storage labeled 'High-Density Hazardous Materials Equipment' so I can get actual heavy-duty gloves that weren't made by @#$%ing Amazon. You know what? We're going to the 'EVA-HAZMAT' locker first, that way I can walk instead of crawling with this stuff. God, you'd think that a Commissar would have better aim when they're trying to open a letter."

The elevator hums as it carries us up, but I drown the noise out with excessive instructions.

"Now, we're not carrying this thing in a regular container so I'm gonna need both of you geniuses to stay six feet ahead and behind me. If there aren't any heavy-duty gloves in the freezer then we're gonna need to go down to storage to get some, if not filch them from some other department. Also, I don't think we'll need a cart but just in case there isn't any on this floor and the wrapping is too heavy that'll be another thing."

>"... Okay. I'll wait by the elevator. If you need- uh- help, then just call me down."

Seriously?

The elevator dings open. Floor 6 is our surgical wing, and lately we haven't had very many major surgeries, so it's dead. At the very end of the hallway is cold storage. There's one of the theaters and a bathroom on the left, and regular storage on the right.

The guard steps out of the elevator and leans on the wall, and me and Chaz look at each other, wondering what to do next.

As we're walking down the hall to Cold Storage, Dr. Jackson nudges me and indicates at this defibrillator locker. I'm guessing she wants me to open it, but there's a big red alarm light on top.

I'm not sure if it's active or not, but even if it wasn't it'd be hard to grab it in plain view of the guard.

That being said, Dr. Jackson has already entered the cold room while I stand here examining it, and the guy either hasn't noticed or doesn't care.

Chaz doesn't follow me in. I hope he isn't too obvious about it.

The Cold Storage is dark, I think the lights burnt out. No matter, I know where everything is.

There's the blood fridge at the far end of the room, stocked with every type, each bag labelled accordingly. Next to it is the dry ice locker. Despite what I told the guard, I know that there are heavy gloves and fabric inside to prevent skin contact. Finally, the lab sink and a cupboard with spare sutures, IV drips and gloves.

I take a little chunk of dry ice stuck to the side of the locker and put it in my lab coat.

Before I leave, I stop to wonder: Should I take a bloodbag out too, to keep appearances? Or should Chaz and I lose the guard before we leave the floor?

They dart forward and slash the Catnip Bag into ribbons. The smell billows out and the air swims with released energy. Or maybe it's just the vision of the two adversaries that's swimming. Healing this node is a very tempting but it will most certainly bring the Demon or at least alert him, so while healing the node would be amazing, the risk is great.
We shouldn't try to evoke anything unless we are certain of the word that would heal this node.
However if we are certain what that word is I say we should, we may not have a chance like this again. However I doubt it would be as simple as saying "I believe in you".
Trying to rewind the memory could be troublesome, maybe we should let it play out and then try and play the memory again, that way we don't miss anything and it doesn't abruptly end here.
Also... Try and Divine the tinted and dark figures, perhaps with the corruption out of the way for the moment we can learn more about their true nature and even their original names.

The pale figure is investigating, and Abbot is stalling. That's not bad, exactly, but I worry for the memory. They would DEFINITELY notice rewinding, at this point... We seem to have helped Abbot Remember, anyway. Job's done. Also if we rewind, what happens to the potency we lost? Do the figures retain their strength as well?

Eh, may as well be a bit more obvious. Tell Abbot that now that he Remembers what's important, there's no need to linger. He should get on with it, so you can get back to work. ...there is much work to be done...
>>

We have been given the lengths of their names 5 for the Dark Figure and 6 for the Tinted Figure I suspect Tinted may be 'Reason' possibly 'Wonder'
less good ideas for the Dark Figure, 'Pride' 'Drive' 'Might' 'Power' 'Logic'

I believe the memory may be handled enough at this point that we can leave it for the moment. However, it is not 'fixed'. Right now it shows clear tampering, which is improvement but very much not ideal. Knowing you can't trust your own memories will be distressing, but is better than trusting false ones. We will need to come back and rewind this memory before we leave abbot's mind. Possibly experience it from the Inkwell's point of view as >>994080 "It would Remember what he would see. And record it." Which suggests it may be able to provide us a baseline 'here is what happened' though likely without the feelings and reasoning.
>>1010869
>They would DEFINITELY notice rewinding, at this point
This depends on the nature of the rewind. If it rewinds them it will either delete, return, or be as if they always had the potency. They may or may not have their minds rewound too. To have certainty we need more information. That information may perhaps be found outside of this memory we still have much of Abbot's mind to explore. I feel our ability to properly fix this memory may be similar to that of a monkey on a typewriter at the current moment; that we need more information f

Yea, though I pass through the shadow of the Garden of Insanity, I shall not give any f*cks…

Why?

‘Cause I’ve been waiting a long time for this…

NSFW WARNING: This quest may (at certain moments) contain copious amounts of blood, mild gore, and other depictions of gratuitous violence, plus some swearing.

ABOUT: This is a collaborative battle-quest between an author and an artist (listed below). Similar to Last Trace, the format of this story will be something akin to a BOSS-RUSH, with segments in between fights where you can work to improve your abilities in various ways. However, combat will work a bit differently here. (You’ll see in a bit.)

Writing & Direction - DetectiveCaillou: Colab quest, aaaaaaaaaaaaaa! You have no idea how honored I am to work with the EDMANGO on a quest. (I can’t help but feel a little guilty, seeing as I consider the art and game mechanics to be “the actual hard parts” of doing these. Of course, you’ll forgive me for the occasional NMH reference - that was one of my main inspirations in writing this.

Art & Mechanics - EDMANGO: Yo, I spent a while working on a system of mechanics that works for this genre of a thing. A blood sport, combat-heavy thing. There will be a mix of things you recognize from my questing style and some other new things. If this works out, I might use the system for other things in the future. Glad to be here, and I hope you enjoy!

You got some WORKSHOP parts to upgrade your ATTACK. It was laughably easy to get the necessary parts for your beam katana. It's almost like the guards don't care enough to prevent convicts from taking things.

You also built rapport with THE GUARDS to win you some ARMOR. Some of the guards think you're pretty cool and want to help keep you alive. But there are some other guards that placed bets on you winning, so they helped you get the armor to increase their odds of winning their bets.
>>

If I'm reading this right, armour is worth one HP per attack the enemy makes, making it just better than HP. So not going for HP is obvious.

I say work on getting that armour as your main priority. If you have time left, see about upgrading your weapon or getting some intel, but my vote goes to stealing parts for the weapon.

deciding to go to PROCESSING, laurence starts to quietly maneuver his way whilst the light ahead continues to bombard him with emotions. this he thought, has to be a trick of the building.
within the PROCESSING room, there, large meat hooks are displayed hanging on the ceiling as a stone tablet is affixed within the middle of the room. along with a grate that surrounds it, as blood drains down to god knows where. the hooks sway despite no clear visible wind to creep inside of the windowless room. some of which even has old and yet, still appearing fresh, carcasses of lowie pigs ripped open for the awaiting decomposers to feast upon. but within the walls of this rotten cancer of a place, there is no decay but to the intruders. there, laurence notices within the midst of the stone tablet that is completely devoid of viscera or any foul blood; there sat a naked body of an old lover.

>???: "Laurence...oh laur-AAA-ence, its been SOSOSOSOSOSO LONG!...you look so sa-Dd, what is it in your mii-iIind hon?"

laurence's feels the gravity of this place suddenly turned to 11, all he wants to do right now is just kneel. but in a last ditch effort to not waste any precious breath left before he feel's the building swallow him whole, he asks only one thing. why? why is it that this place is so adamant in killing. why is everything moist in despair and dread and just death. all he wanted was some swag to pay off his dreams. he knew it would always take him someday, but to be in the most humiliating fashion somehow breaks him whole.

>???: "oh darling, you're so silly!....n-no its no-NAUGHT-t death, it never was~! there is l-AUGH-ife. trust EEme, it is not all just d-death that looms heeeere!"

laurence just stares, his breath even and his hands feels cold and numb.

>???: "if you would liaialaike to, i can show you! they were all warmEEEEEed and hap-hapHAHAPpy, and i am sure the others would glad-EEEEEEEly make you feel as welcAAAAAAomed as how we were! i REMEMBERED coming here so scared, but now i feel a lot more aliveALIVEALIVEALAAAAIVE! haha~ cmon!"

laurence sees the figure shake uncontrollably as it tries to stand up. the figure slumps down as the sounds of bones break rings within the claustrophobic room, it screams in utter anguish for what seemed to be minutes as it slowly rises to a standing position. lauren-

it awaits with their hand across laurence's direction.

You need to up your confidence. Assert dominance. Push back against him.
"Why must we be enemies?"
The second he begins to respond, SLAP YOUR HANDS ON HIS ASSCHEEKS
If he's surprised by this, push him down onto the ground and sit on top of him (not on his dick, his chest) to immobilize him!
Regardless of whether that works, say
"I am not here to attack you or Tau. That is not part of my mission."
if possible begin stroking Sampi's cock, then look to Tau
"Do you have lustful feelings for each other?"

If they do, make them an offer: You can sterilize them, and then leave them alone, not telling anyone of Sampi. Part of your mission is to sterilize rogues - not report them to Delta. They can have each other, and you can continue on your way.

In the end, I'd say sterilizing Sampi is much more important than sterilizing Tau. A female rogue agent can't impregnate other female agents.

You, are a young girl, almost human, apart from the two small dark protrusions on each side of your abdomen, and the small splotches of dark coloration on the back of your hands. As you reveal yourself in your crib, you are seemingly unnoticed by anyone in the room.

Around the room are many identical cribs, most of which are currently unattended and unwatched aside from three nurses standing spaced around the edges of the room, and a group of five well-dressed individuals that are walking around the room, assessing each child and taking notes in a small pad of paper that each one seems to carry.

As two of the well-dressed people near your own crib, they are momentarily distracted by the nurses calling out as one of the cribs a small distance away from you erupts in flames, almost immediately one of the two that was approaching you, as well as two of the other wanderers rush over to the now burning crib and begin to whisper quietly about the child within as one of the nurses brings a small red stone over to the fire, the nurse lightly tosses the stone unto the child within and almost immediately the flames begin to die, leaving only embers as evidence of the fires presence.

The other person that was nearing you, a tall elegant woman with large curly hair kept from her face by the large ram horns on either side of her face, turns her attention back to the route she was walking, she stops at one crib, wrinkles her nose at what ever it contains, and then she is at your own crib, looking down at you with surprise on her face.

"What sort of animal are you?"

She reaches into your crib and pokes one of the small protrusions on the side of your body.

"Hmm... Extra limbs, maybe? Are you something mythical, something weird, or just really deformed?"

She grabs your hand in her own and turns it

The hall is brighter now. I guess reserve power still uses the same lights, but at lower brightness.

>Return to the observation room.

Toal and I return to the obserrvation room. On our way, I notice that the doors in the hall are now a different colour. I think they're unlocked now.

When we get back to the observation room, I go and check the monitors that were darkened before. The cells in the West corridor seem to be used for larger orgtanisms. Cells 1, 2, 4 and 6 are empty, with nothing of note showing up on the monitor. Cell 3 apparently has some kind of Miklik in it, but nothing shows up on the monitor. Cell 5 is obstructed by foilage, so I can't see what's in it. The records say it's supposed to be empty.

>Stop fawning over Toal, you're soldiers.

Actually, right now we're both just survivors of whatever the hell this place is. I'd like to have a bit of a friendship with the only other living person I've found here.

Should we look at one of the cells, or something else?
>>
No. 1006552 ID: 6519cb

Politely knock on the miklik's cell door. Announce there's a big unplanned family outing and invite them to come along.

This should reduce the chances of a miklik hiding in the camera's dead angle to pounce on whoever opens the door.
>>
No. 1006553 ID: e7848c

I don't think we're going to find much here. Let's just crack the miklik's door open and announce you're not hostile. Toal can guard the door while you enter. If they're awake, you can talk. If they're still in stasis, you can wake them up.

Ok, so, every interesting room has its camera blocked.
I guess all we can do now is find some information on what we're dealing with, and keep an eye on the corridor to see if anything comes out of the newly-unlocked rooms.

Well, that or try to investigate room 3, with friendly but guarded intentions. Tell them you're subjects from another area and want to talk to them.

You wake within the endless void suddenly, gaze sweeping the empty darkness.

You cannot say how one moment you can recognize that you'd been asleep at all, where before you did not. Nor can you understand how you recognize the place you now find yourself to be an unchanging void of nothing, endless and timeless, without substance. These things had no meaning to you before, but suddenly they do, and you understand near perfectly that to be in this void is to be as nothing yourself. But something pierces this bleak realm, shedding light into this inky black. You feel your attention drawn to it, like a thirsting man to water, and as your awareness seizes this light you realize it is not one light but three, each calling to you from a place with both time and meaning. Each bears feelings, flashes of thought and memory that you can only briefly feel before they slip from your grasp. All the same you know you must go to them, must answer the call the echoes now into the void around you.

>Which call to answer first?

>A feeling of conflict, of bloodlust, of roaring anger

>A feeling of nervous anticipation, of eagerness, of expectation

>A feeling of pain, of desperation, of naked fear

You are a Cosmic Thief
Power:
You can steal the impossible; the magma flowing beneath the earth, the stars in the sky, the essence of a god...
Of course, since this power was gifted to you by an entity of the cosmos, your ability is somewhat limited at the moment. For now, you can pickpocket the replicant shreds of divine essence found at churches and shrines. Hold anything stronger and the weight would crush you.
At higher levels, you can steal metaphysical concepts, like the exact number of drops in a waterfall, or an algorithm that can determine if a program halts or loops, or even the concept of dogma from a major religion.

Weakness:
Oath of Greatness - you have a permanent handicap on your ability; you are forbidden from taking any action that can be interpreted as a mundane version of your power.
No stealing pig-iron keys from a mortal guard, with magic or even your bare hands.

"Let the army of vermin march on our lands. Let the gods themselves spectate and jeer. I will steal the hope in their eyes and the futures of their children! I - We - are Urrat the Pilgrim, and may this be our final step to glory!"
>>
No. 1006622 ID: afe7de

I like the idea of COSMIC THIEF, though my interpretation is that the weakness is you can do weaker versions of the power, but if it's not sufficiently mighty enough you lose half of your total energy pool, meaning if you have to do subtle subterfuge that seems beneath you, you still can, but at a cost.

OR, keep KOME's interpretation of the weakness, but add in the ability to disseminate your stolen energy/skills/concepts to close followers. Maybe a single devotee at first. You are GOD TOUCHED, and that means you will be WORSHIPED like one, what better way to be worshiped then to deliver a BOON unto someone.

As for your second name, it's FUR. Some obscure language called LATIN says it's the word for THIEF.

The first thing you steal using your GIFT is their SENSE OF BALANCE. They can no longer move around properly or hold things properly. Many fall off their boats and while some arrive on shore, your numbers are enough to defeat them and claim the ships as your own.
>>
No. 1006871 ID: e22de5

To steal the power of gods is said to be impossible.

You laugh at that, for you have stolen the power of gods from the moment you awakened.

Now, you feel the roiling power of stolen gods within your soul. You grasp a single thread of it and consume it, fueling your own divine gift. Reaching out across the fabric of reality to grasp at the very concept of Balance itself, with a twist you pull it away from underneath your enemies. It is a difficult feeling to describe, stealing a concept, but you've had plenty of practice and it now comes easily. You watch as the men aboard the ships just seems to slip, losing any ability to stand or move properly. Some fall from the boats, doing all they can to keep from drowning. Few make it to the beaches with any semblance of organization, those few are swiftly dealt with, the tribes that surround you falling upon them with brutal savagery. The fighting is quick, and you watch as the tribes take control of the skiffs and use them to take the fight to the ships themselves. Whatever superiority of number they possessed has been made nothing.

"God-Touched..."

The whisper is enough to draw your attention to the seer that stands behind you. You can hear the fear in her voice, the awe. It had been years since you'd heard such fear, since you'd proven your loyalty to the tribes. It confuses you, the seer's had long been content with your presence. You start to ask after this odd behavior, but you feel suddenly as if darkness is creeping up the edges of your vision. You try to blink it away, but it grows, consuming your sight until you feel as if you are falling once more...

Only to awaken with a start, eyes staring up into the night shrouded canopies of your jungle home. You sit up to find the bonfire has died, and on the far side, seated with a grim expression upon her face, the crone stares at you. There is silence as you stand on shaky legs,

It's not straying if you are buying the supplies necessary to keep yourself from slowing down due to starvation.

Head into town, honestly barter for food and water, then go straight to the Blind Oracle. For now, do not steal from your own shrine, it could harm the tribe.

Gather supplies, you don't want to die because you weren't prepared. Especially for that SWAMP that comes up right before the seer. without supplies, walking around it would take ages, and walking through it could leave you addled with anemia from the blood loss of leeches or poisoned by some manner of dangerous insect.

Solicitations for your service are, less than desired in quantity. Compensation, too adequate to pick up the slack comfortably.
Though it was twenty-five years and a few months since you were born, you've only been known as CUTECTIVE for two, three years tops. Before then, you were only called...

Wow, cuteyes really don't screw around despite their cuddly exteriors.

Okay, so you're doing something on the down-low related to Director Shirleylee or general cuteye espionage. You're uncomfortable thinking about the details, but can you at least admit to yourself whether you're working with or against them? Is that why you're sure that visitor was an impostor? Because they were snooping for something that the Director should have already known about? If so, Jemmy might be onto something with pointing to that visitor as a suspect (albeit for the wrong reason), especially since that particular missing file is the closest thing to a MOTIVE we've come upon so far, and teleportation is one heck of a capable MEANS.
