Okay that handles getting to know you better. It's so easier to care about someone you actually know something about, rather than treating them as a mindless drone. Anyway, you're taking this whole escapade quite well. You may be able to use the flaming orb as a source of light were you to go into the cave, but ultimately I don't think you're going to find anything terribly salvageable here. Continue to look around and if things seem hostile I recommend fleeing to somewhere you might find other humans.

>Bill: "Oh but don't worry, that doesn't mean I think you'll fail like I did! I believe in you Ron, you can definitely win the game! In fact, since you were such a nice guy and listened to my story, I think I'll do something special for you!"

>Bill: "Well you're in for a treat because this thing is crazy strong. Let me tell you this, those things you have in your hands right now are literally the keys to beating this game. Oh by the way did I say that this is all a game? Yeah, this is all a huge game and if you win you get the grand prize! You look like the kind of guy who likes to win, I'll bet you'll love the prize!"
>Bill: "Anyways I'm getting ahead of myself so let me just hand you some general tips and tricks for those sweet little balls you got there. That ball there grants its user a great power that can be described as a player character force in this world. First you have to wish for something. Anything can be fine, as long as it's something you care about deeply. The deeper your desire the stronger the effect. Then all you gots to do is eat the ball."
>Ron: "Wha-"
>Bill: "Don't interrupt me, my boy! I'm getting to the good part! Anyways, you might have noticed that the balls became smaller so that you could hold both of them. Well, all you have to do is will them into becoming even smaller so that you can just pop them like a pill! Just think of it like some sort of super steroid."
>Bill: "Oh by the way the effects aren't permanent, you can always recall it by taking the ball out of your body."
>Ron: "What like through vomitting or...?!"
>Bill: "Weelll, I guess you could do that maybe? I don't know I never tried it like that maybe you should! But I just told it to come out and it simply came out!"
>Bill: "Well what are you waiting for? Try it out, it feels great the first time around! You don't even need to reach for any high and mighty desire, any old thing you want is fine!"

>Bill: "No my boy, this crystal land is my body, my home, and my coffin! I inflicted this upon myself upon abusing the ball's power! Not even wishing for my sake will free me from the power of another ball. Besides, it's not all bad here. I am sentient throughout this whole crystal field! The crystal acts as all of my senses combined. I can even eavesdrop on the occasional conversation that takes place in the All Great Crystal Temple, although that's something way later in your game!"

Here's three good reasons:
>1: FUCKING MAGIC. Seriously, try hovering or levitating something or cast Magic Missile.
>2: Feline agility and dexterity, man. Cats can fit their whole bodies through any opening they can get their head in, have good speed, climbing skills beyond the norm, wicked claws, perfect balance and super flexibility, plus excellent night vision to boot.
>3: Being female is a useful advantage in terms of social interaction, as they have inherent influencing abilities and powers, plus the female mind brings a female perspective, which includes natural multitasking and other such goodies.

To be fair, here are some cons:
>1: You are now a furry.
>2: You are now female. This comes with emotional instability and uncontrollable bouts of insanity. You are easier to manipulate in this form, and you lack a personal moral center to stabilize on in times of stress. Oh, and you also no longer have male genitals and are now vulnerable to being raped.
>3: You are now ridiculously cute, and thus people are less likely to take you seriously, and you will find it near impossible for others to respect you.

Not that each pro can be a con, and each con can be a pro, depending on your personal tastes. What are you personal tastes anyways?

Also, ask if using the same wish repeatedly is bad on the orb or yourself, as in changing back and forth between the same forms (normal and cat-mage).

Based on what I've seen around there, I think it may have been because they were forced into slavery by some humans in the past? Imagine that! Well, if it makes you feel any better, at least that wish of yours gave you a good disguise right? Now those villagers won't be trying to rip your head off and mounting it on a pole around their village center right! That's always a plus in my opinion although I can't speak much about head related injuries! Anyways I doubt your orb has much more magic left after a strong wish like that so even if you get it out of your system it wouldn't have enough magic left to do anything drastic so maybe it's your best interest to keep it on until you can find more magic? Cheer up, Ron. This is a new world full of new possibilities! It wouldn't hurt to try a few of them out for a while, even if they're strange and unfamiliar.

Ask about the different ways one can get magic, and if there's a renewable resource or something that just exists in finite amounts for players to find. This will be very important.

Also ask about other players he's seen. Are there any? Are they all human? Do they all come from your world? And at what time were they taken? It would be interesting to see how long this was going on; that could give us a clue as to what's causing this.

Wait! Before going to town, there is something you are missing: a COVER STORY.
Because:
Humans are known to be teleported into this world.
Humans are killed on sight here.

If you want to avoid everyone trying to kill you, you are going to have to come up with an explanation of WHO YOU ARE and HOW YOU GOT HERE (an explanation that doesn't involve spilling the fact that you are Human and getting purged with fire)

For the simplest cover story (you were magically transported here but are not human), you need to find out the following by asking Bill:
1. Does appearing around here with no knowledge of the world blatantly mark you as a Player?
2. Are all Players Humans, and would a non-Human Player be killed on sight like a Human would be?

>Ron: I was about two thirds of the way to the lake so it shouldn't take much longer to arrive at my destination. It's getting a lot darker though, and I estimate that the sun will completely set in the next hour or so. Either this world doesn't have a moon or it's a new moon because I can't see it anywhere in the sky so it will be pitch black once the sun goes down. Though I should get there in about ten minutes or so if I hurry.
>Ron: As I draw nearer to the site, I spot a light source glowing in the distance. Getting closer I can see that it's coming from a torch held aloft by someone who looks a lot like how my changed self looks like. This is probably what Bill meant by blending in with the locals, I guess. The one holding the torch looks like a female with a sword while the other one, while pretty effeminate, looks like a guy. He has a bow and arrows with him. I don't know if they're hostile or not so I take care to silently approach close enough so that I can listen in on their conversation. As I crouch behind the brushes, I can hear them talk.

>Sword Cat: "...the signal came in about two hours ago. Unless the human got knocked unconscious entering the lake, I doubt he's here anymore."
>Bow Cat: "I don't even know why they sent us out here when it was already so late. The monsters get really dangerous when night falls I heard..."
>Sword Cat: "Don't be such a pussy, Fretz, those monsters can't hurt us. Come on, let's go check out the beach area then we can go search that damn crystallized place afterwards."
>Fretz: "I don't know, Kali. My mother always told me not to-"
>Kali: "Gods almighty Fretz, you've just become a recognized ranger, and you're still going on about your mother! When are you going to grow up and start thinking for your own?"
>Kali: "Well I can't do this by myself so if you're so scared of the dark then we have no other choice but to hurry back to the village. But first thing in the morning, we're coming out here again to find our target. The people of this world cannot deal with another one of those damned humans, especially not after what happened the last time.
>Fretz: "Kali, I'm sorry..."
>Kali: "No matter. He probably couldn't have gotten very far. We can afford a night's rest, and tomorrow morning his head will hang. Besides, no human has ever managed to get very far the first few days anyways. I mean, who'd even help a despicable being like them? Now come, let's get home before night completely falls. It's a new moon out and your fear of monsters is getting to me, too."
The two catfolk walk off down the path nearest to them, presumably towards the aforementioned village that they were talking about. The light from their torch grows fainter by the second as the pair get farther away.

Seems like you lucked out on choosing a form, so looks like you're gonna be stuck as a catgirl for a little bit longer.

Tail them back to the village, but don't let yourself be known. They mentioned monsters, so it's probably not safe to be out here. You can think up a cover story when you're safely in the village - maybe say you're wandering and from a distant village.

Also remember to eavesdrop on these two on the way so you can blend in better.

Why do I get the sinking feeling that we're way over our heads here?
Hell, our cat-form will only be able to disguise us from a cursory glance at best. If we try to talk to anyone the gig will be up in an instant.

Okay Ron, First Priority: Tail them to the village, and watch your back for anything nasty. No sudden movements.

After we've found civilization, we focus on figuring out how to capture someone alive for interrogation. Magic will focus strongly on this, as well as a well placed thwack to the back of the targets skull.
>>
No. 327999 ID: bd2a40

Right, since they are rangers, they might know if you are following them, so just go along the path they took, but far enough away you and they can not see each other.

When/if you reach the village, camp outside of it and wait until morning to enter. Would be less suspicious than entering at night.
Also, hide your other orb. They might know that that is what the humans get when they arrive.

By the way, anybody else think that Bill was the one who enslaved the natives, possibly killing them for their magic energy until they somehow managed to stop him by turning him into that crystal thing?

Kali was the name of the other cat uh... female. If you have to totally guess I'd try to match that. If you say your name is Ronald...a, and none of the animal...people name each other anything like that it'll look suspicious. Roni sounds kind of like Kali though. Assuming all female names don't start with a K. Assuming there are female names. Crap. Well at least they speak English?

They've already vanished beyond a bend in the road, but I can still see the glow from their torch so it shouldn't be that hard to tail them. I wait a bit until I'm sure they're out of earshot and then get out of the brushes. I can just barely hear them talking to each other, but it's too far away to even distinguish who is talking, much less anything they're saying. Making sure not to make any noises, I start on them down the same path they took.

Actually, hide it regardless of what you do. It can shrink down, right, so it should be easy.

I am mostly neutral on if you should help them or not. Helping them immediately puts you in a situation where you'll need to bluff the hell out of everyone all the time forever in order to stay alive- honestly, a human appeared but when they investigate there is no human, just a mysterious and confused traveler with strong magical powers? It'll be bloody obvious what you've done to anyone with even a mildly suspicious mind. My instinct in this situation would be to avoid all people and see if you can travel for a few days and get away from the immediate region before trying anything, but it's far from the only option.

For one thing, because you're not the kind of person who would just stand idly by and watch two people get murdered - unless you are that kinda guy, in which case their fears about you are warranted.

Second, you need info about this world - REAL info, not the cryptic crap that Bill told you.

And lastly, you need friends. How many other humans have played this "game" all the way to the end? None, apparently, and most likely because they tried to do it all on their own. You don't wanna take this place over, and you don't give a crap about becoming some powerful wizard, you just want to finish this and get home so you can become a patent lawyer and spend the rest of your days drinking champagne in the French Riviera. Maybe if you earn some goodwill points, and don't give away the fact that you're a human just yet, you can make them see that and they'll help you. Maybe if someone finally wins this dumb game, it'll put a stop a stop to the endless cavalcade of douchebags that keep coming here and slaughtering them.

You're gonna encounter some other felines eventually anyway, might as well do it on your terms.

Two things. First, your magic is intent based. Good to know. Second, you remember that last human you ran across? That's who they want to kill. They're stuck though because he's a giant immortal crystal zombie...thing. You don't want to be like him, right? You're gonna win this game. All the levels. Now with that in mind...

This is a game for you, and for that guy you heard vocalizing before he dumped you here, but not for these cat-people. They don't fold up and go back in the closet when you win or lose. Not only is this not a game for them, neither do they know it is a game for you. The last human to come around here (goddamn idiot grumble) just fucked them up and that's all they know about it. (Or, all that we know they know about it.) That means that you have some incredibly valuable information for them. You wake up in this blank void and hear a disembodied voice, and that's all you know, yet that's incredibly important. See, your predecessor may have been something of a bad cookie, but it was that voice who gave him the marble and all that magic shit. That voice "narrator" let's say is the one who decided you were going to play this game, and the one who decided that the last guy was going to play this game. Basically that voice being responsible for the practical destruction of these kitties's civilization is the true voice of their enemy.

So the question is not how do you endear yourself to some sort of beast man town. The question is how do you share this knowledge you have which exonerates both you and your ill mannered predecessor, and places the blame solidly in the one who's bringing these magic marble games into play. Once they know that you can work together to figure out what the fuck is going on, and how to avoid being trapped as a giant demon...creepy guy for all eternity. Or they might just be a bunch of inbred hicks who can't do a thing against omnipotent otherworldly disembodied narrator voices. But either way, the only way you can last long enough to make it to the end game is to convey to these people that killing you, defeating you, ending you, all those things you don't want to happen, won't get rid of their problem, which is being the dumping grounds for some overpowered hoo ha who thinks it's funny to ruin people's lives by playing a game.

Basically what I am saying is DO NOT KILL THE HAPPY TOWNSPEOPLE. You can kill those monster things though. Unless they decide to have a tea party with you instead of biting your head off. Probably good to figure out how to draw magic from their sodden corpses too. God I hope this game isn't like FF8.

If bluffing fails and the jig is up then ask if they'd like to sit down and talk things through for a while rather than resorting to anything drastic. Also soak up the magic from that thing you killed.

Things to ask are:
- What do they know about the game?
- Why are they hunting humans/players?
- Can they tell you a bit about the surrounding area?

If they DO get hostile then use your earth magic to temporarily turn the soil under their feet into deep quicksand/mud and harden it again to trap them buried chest deep in the ground. (Beware of arrows and throwing weapons though) Then you can interrogate them from a stronger position an still appeal kindly.

All right, time for some faster talk... I think the important point here is to show that we're not a player and thereby deflect danger, and to avoid admitting to lying to them or being caught in significant lies, because then everything that we've said would become suspect. If they know how the spheres work, the fact that you have one should "prove" that you're not actually a player; after all, if you were a human, you couldn't maintain this form while having your orb outside your body, now could you?

Related to that, I think our story now becomes that our master sent us here, but perhaps not quite as accidentally as we claimed; we were sent intentionally and specifically to retrieve an item from some human, who we found without trouble and as it turned out was pretty much incompetent and didn't even notice us snagging it as far as we could tell.

Maintain the theoretical existence of a "master" figure, since obviously players are independents don't work for anyone else. But don't give any details aside from that he's powerful and wouldn't appreciate us talking about him much.

If bluffing screws up, there's always the truth backed up by the fact that you obviously aren't hostile or you'd have let the monster get them. That might work maybe.

If things do turn ugly, remember that magic is apparently based upon focusing your will. For example, if you will them to be trapped but uninjured, the magic should respond to that... I hope.

Shit, that got shot down fast. Should I just tell them the truth and hope they don't attack me or something else?

Just tell them the goddamn truth. Make sure they understand that you don't want to hurt them, you're confuzed as heck, and really, you'd love to help them with anything they... might need help with?

Just appear harmless and helpful.

Well fuck. Confess everything except being a human. Say you used the sphere do get magic powers and you heard people hate players and you don't even know what that MEANS and blah blah panicky babbling.
>>
No. 342038 ID: e3f578

I say cheese it while yelling that some players aren't bad, just confused humans thrown into a game they don't understand without their complete consent and have no desire for conflict. And that your just running because you know that cats hate players but just don't know why, and that you info got that from an old failed player.

Finish with that before today you didn't even think other worlds and magic was a thing. You're just a college boy turned cat-girl by mistake.

>>
No. 342040 ID: bd2a40

Probably best to come clean, seeing as deceit does not seem to be working for you. Also, not sure if hiding the fact that you are human will be helpful considering that further lying will make them less likely to not kill you.
You should also explain why you lied in the first place as well. You know, the very ominous conversation you overheard those two having near the lake.

Might want to also get ready to run think of some magicky way to leg it with out killing or harming them.
>>
No. 342045 ID: cd63e9

you don't know nearly enough to come up with a convincing lie. you might as well try the truth. yes you are a human, yes the weird ass voice that kidnapped you and dumped you in the woods called you a player, but that's almost everything you know about what is going on. you just want to get home, back to you friends and family (even if you a loner keep the friends and family line its important they see you as a person) you know broadly what direction you have to go to get home and your fairly sure something bad will happen to you if you stay here. if they press on how you know that say you found what happened to the last guy that didn't make it out, and you do not want to think about what happened to that poor bastard more than you have to.

they seem like decent people, they just happen to think that your a monstrous threat to the world. if you can convince them that your not they will probably help you.

...

Well, honestly, that mechanic makes this whole deception kind of impossible to maintain. It's enough to make one suspect that every time you are just getting comfortable, this "game" is going to somehow screw you.

I'd say sure and toss the bag to the female. She'll catch it, which means that she won't have her hands on her sword for at least a moment or two. The male is too much of a cowardly wuss to shoot you quickly anyway. Then you'll have a few seconds to talk without being worried about them killing you before you can react.

And then you can come clean... but be ready to blast them if they're not willing to accept that you're friendly. Now that they know you're disguised as a cat person, if hostile they cannot be allowed to escape alive with that information.
>>
No. 342124 ID: 190e24

Admit that you're a player, but still play dumb about the whole human thing. Claim that you've always been a cat and be adamant about it.

It may throw them for a loop and buy you some time.

Hmm, being cute and pitiful after saving their lives just might work. I think I support this plan.

Do not forget that they themselves did not seem too friendly towards players when you overheard them near the lake, so be prepared to run for it, even if you go with the aforementioned plan.

Since you all seem intent on having Ron tell them he's a player, can we at least have him give them the bag and wait a bit to see what happens first?
You could try to explain away the ability to absorb monsters magic as something your master did to you, after all, we know magic in this world is very versatile and if players are so powerful, there's a very good chance a powerful mage would make spells to mimic their abilities
>>
No. 342236 ID: 51ee23

Don't go spontaneously blurting anything out, but don't lie. These two don't exactly come across as hardened killers. Just say you're lost and confused and found the bag sitting here just a little while ago.
>>
No. 342330 ID: bf81dd

You might want to express the gravity of the situation on these two as well. I mean with all the "players" and "game" terms they go on about it's like they think you're doing this for fun. For all you know you've been unexpectedly taken from your home and thrust into an incredibly lethal situation with no real idea of why or what's going on. If this has happened to other people then you can kind of understand why they've freaked out.

Bluffing your way into some information also didn't work out, but there's no reason you can't be allies for the greater good.

I don't think running now would be the greatest of ideas. That basically gives them a reason to actively hunt me down again. They don't look completely ready to jump on me just yet, so that's always a plus, right?
"O-okay, I'll give you the bag, just don't hurt me."
>The bag is tossed over to the female feline who opens it up. Upon seeing what is inside, Fretz exclaims,
"Wait, the orb is right here! There's no way she could be a player, only humans can become players. But I don't understand, then how are you able to absorb magic like that?"
"Ah, that's also because of my m-master! You see, he always wanted to make something as powerful as a player and I was his test subject!"
>Ron holds his breath hoping they will bite on this lie better than they did the previous one. To his surprise, they seem to ease up a bit, evidently believing his tale. However, Kali interjects with another question.
"That may be so, but where did you get all of this?" She says referring to the pouch full of goodies.
"I-I found them. Just lying on the ground."
"That means the real player is still out there, albeit without an orb. We need to report that to headquarters. If what you are saying is true, then I believe it would be within your best interest to come with us. A mage of your special background could assist us in finding the real one. What do you say, ahh... I believe I never got your name?"

Oh I think I have an idea. The biggest hole in your story right now is your near total ignorance of the world. What if the master from your story wasn't just teaching you but using you as an experiment? You don't know much because this is the first time you've been out of the tower/complex/whatever. don't come out and say anything unless they ask, but if you can imply that you were being raised in confinement for use in magical research(keep in mind you in this story you don't know enough about the world for your masters treatment of you to seem strange) it would explain why you don't have allot of common knowledge.

No sense in lying. Just because Ron is an inherently male name in, er... an empty white void, doesn't mean it is in made up experimenting mage land.

Really though, I say the thing to do is push the ignorance sympathy angle. Just shrug and blink and let them give you a name. People always feel more sympathetic to things they get to name.

Yeah after giving them a name of some sort, ask that while you know of players, you don't know what they've really done to the world to make them so reviled and hunted down like dogs. From what your master has told you about them, some are pulled out of their home without knowing consent to participate in some weird game. Explain that you've been raised pretty much in isolation with your hermit wizard master and don't understand much about people or the world and your master saw fit to let you go and grow.

If anyone asks for the name of your Master, just say you've always called him "Doc" since you were little. He's a doctor, you don't know much else. It's always been "Doc" and he's one of those weird mysterious hermit wizards.

>>343247
If we're not going to give an actual name, then saying that we just call him "Master" is pretty much fine already.

And I really don't think that sharing our fake life story is the best move. The more we say, the more opportunities there will be to introduce holes into our story accidentally due to our own ignorance and thereby fuck up.
