Muirborg is a beautiful village surrounded by fields and meadows. There are old legends about barrows on the outer edge of the fields, but Haldar hardly puts any stock in them. Muirborg has been kept safe and cut off from the mainland by the Dundril Mountains to the east. In any case, it’s a somewhat overcast day, and Haldar has been out checking the fields – they aren’t quite ready to harvest yet, though.

He sees some broken rocks in the distance and goes a bit closer.

As he gets closer, he can make out what looks like a small cave set into the hillside with a pillar of stone at the right edge. There are strange markings on the stone – they look like some kind of writing, but Haldar can’t read it.

Touch it with your grubby mitts.

Got a flashlight? Or a light of some sort?

You shall enjoy power beyond imagination if you close your eyes AND RUN INTO THE CAVE.

Haldar moves closer, taking a step into the cave. “Hello?”

It echoes a bit, but there’s no other response than the sound of my voice. Guess there’s no one in here. . .

The pillar looms to the right of him now, almost his height, though he has to keep his head down. Now that he’s closer, he can see all the markings better.

ᚷᛜ.ᚷᛖᚾᛟᛗ.ᛞᚦᚱᚱᛖᚾ.ᛗᛖᚾ.ᚨᚲᛏᚨ.ᛊᛁᚷ..ᛁᚾᛟᛗ.ᛗᛁᚾᚨ.ᚹᛇᚷᚷᚨᚱ
.ᚠᛁᚾᚾᛊ.ᚠᚨᚱᛟᚱ.ᛖᛃ.ᛒᛖᚱᛇᛏᛏᚨᛞ..

He reaches out a hand and brushes his fingers over one of the markings – it feels like just cold stone for a moment before it suddenly prickles and feels warm. He pulls his hand away.

What the—?!

He wasn’t sure if he should leave now, or keep exploring. Old Nan, in the village, would maybe know something about those markings – or Gerson, who told stories of when he was younger and his adventures outside the village, might know something about the cave.

So either the caves have just now opened or it's just a thing people don't talk about. I'm thinking it's the former.

Check your surroundings, any signs of people coming or going before you? Footprints? Marks in dust or something?

Haldar looks about for any signs that anyone else has been there – he finds only a single set of smudged footprints going in. He takes a breath and goes in further, walking in complete darkness for what seems ages before he sees a faint glow.

As he approaches, he sees more of that strange writing, but now it seems to be traced faintly in red light.

There was something in the air now, a kind of presence, pressing down on Haldar, and he swallowed thickly. Keep going forward, or turn back?

I'm fairly sure this text is significant.
Anyone up for a collaborated effort to decipher it?

It looks to be norse runes, we could start there.

Elder Futhark? Can't translate it, though. Maybe Old Nan or Gerson can.
>>
No. 427449 ID: c44286

On IRC we wound up with the transliteration of
"inom mina wïggar
ligger begravd kungen gamle
wems rike ïgde
ïwen drthmmer"

which we then attempted to translate and so far we have:

"within my <unknown>
lies buried king of old
whose reign <unknown>
<unknown> <unknown>"

We refined it a little, to

"Within my stones

even dreams"

We also translated this earlier one, >>427348

"go through the doors but beware, in this tomb are untold dangers."

It was strange, but slowly the strange writing was beginning to make sense – somehow. Despite the slight unease, he keeps going down the tunnel, leaving the shimmering rune stone behind. Perhaps there was treasure, further on. Even if there wasn’t, his curiosity was urging him on.

The path begins to wind and without the faintly glowing runes, it was terribly dark. It hardly mattered whether or not Haldar had his eyes closed or not. The path continues this way for a long time ad Haldar puts his hands up to the wall to try and guide himself, if only a little.

Then, suddenly, the tunnel begins to lighten ahead. But it isn’t like it was with the stone before – no, it looked more like lantern light, or a torch. Haldar hesitates for a moment, trying to move quietly now.

As he creeps up to the last bend and pokes his head around, he catches sight of a figure in dark clothing, bent over what looks like a sarcophagus, the lantern sitting on the rim beside his arm as he searches, filling the small cavern with faint light. On closer inspection, the sarcophagus seems as those it was broken when it was opened, large cracks running through the writing that covered it.

There are scattered stalagmites and stalactites in the small cavern, and with the faint flickering, Haldar can just make out what might be another tunnel on the other side of the cavern.

There is a pressing presence in the cavern, far stronger than what Haldar had previously felt – almost as though it is now difficult to breathe properly. He doesn’t know what to do now, whether or not to flee.
