Dark Times have come upon the world.

Something is changing, and nobody knows quite what or quite why. Monsters have been creeping in from the outer wildlands, with strange and unknown monsters appearing all the time. And even now, when they would be most needed, the various Kingdoms have withdrawn their armies inward. Marshalling for a war that has not been declared, against a threat that nobody understands. They have been moving toward an ancient, untamed valley, skirmishing over land therein.

With these movements, the outer edges of civilization have fallen into chaos. Bandit-Lords and Mercenary Warbands use force to carve out empires of their own, claiming what they can in the absence of a military presence from the civilized lands.

The Elves of the Whimsyheart Forest have felt the brunt of the shroud falling across the world. A roving band of Hobgoblin raiders fell upon their settlements, capturing and enslaving all of them that did not fall to their blades.

The disgusting humanoids have put the elves to work in their mine, Clearcutting the woods around them and driving the kind-hearted diminutives near to death. And this is far from an isolated instance in these dark times.

And heroes like the hunter Naiel, a child of the wilderness that moves with the intuitive speed and calm of a natural predator.

The three companions have been hired by the few escapees of the Whimsyheart Elves to save the rest from their captivity. Solsa's distraction and Tirya's strength have gotten Naiel behind the Hobgoblins' walls. The true test of their heroism begins here.

Upon hearing her comrade's cry of alarm, Tirya immediately makes an attempt at securing entry into the area of conflict, with her fists.
The wall gives way to reveal a building interior and a handful of hobgoblins showered in wood splinters. They may have been sleeping, but it is hard for her to tell, as they are very awake now.

Hobgoblin 1: "What in the festering, ass end of Hell is going on!"

Hobgoblin 2: "Get out here, you... you titty monster!"

She hops down into the courtyard as Tirya and Solsa emerge from the building set off to the side.

Solsa: It's a good thing I was here. I totally saved the day with my quick thinking and master plan.

Naiel: Yes, surely. But I believe we need a new plan.

Tirya: Why? We killed them, right? Why do we need a new plan?

Naiel: Because there are probably more of them down in the mine. And the sentries called out about intruders.

Solsa: Because you messed up.

Naiel: Yes, it was my mistake. But the fact remains. The Elves and remaining Hobgoblins are clearly down in the mines, and they are probably going to be prepared for us. We need a plan on how to proceed.

Naiel approaches the pigpen. Most Dire Swine are completely intractable beasts, but the Hobgoblnis have bred these for ... relative domestication. They are fairly docile when not riled, but still savage and violent when angry.

Naiel's predatory nature and harmony with the wilderness has granted her a gift. She can leverage her own feral presence to commune with beasts on some base level. And for beasts like Dire Piggies, naturally inclined to herd and follow, she can command them.

At her urging, the Piggies trundle aggressively into the mines. Solsa rides at the front, waving her sword and laughing enthusiastically.

She is trained in archery, and takes the Hobgoblin Bow along with several arrows.

As far as Naiel can tell, the hobgoblin's face isn't decayed at all.

She isn't aware of any sort of creature that could cause such a horrible infection. Maybe if they're mining cobalt it could cause this sort of malady? Naiel isn't too familiar with it, that is the demesne of kobolds.

Advancing down the tunnel, the group encounters more dead hobgoblins, alongside some dead elves. It is a grisly scene. We have a fencer, a giant, and a hunter, and that thing is obviously supernatural.

Have Tirya blow at it really hard while our fencer strikes at one of its limbs. If it's made up of some sort of particles, the first should have an effect. If it's solid and just sort of cloaked, the second should have an effect.

If neither is the case... then we have a problem, and we need to find out if it has some sort of physical component we can attack.

Oh, that's good.

Time to mop up, or ask the elves what's up.

Better your faceplate than your face.
Ensure the safety of the current group of elves, then delve deeper!

Well the monster surely has some loot. Maybe a helmet just your size?

that is the real purpose of a helmet though, to take damage instead of your head.

The cave doesn't appear to go much farther, there's just a hollow in the wall.

The elves don't appear to be in much of a condition to explain things, so the trio of heroes escort them back to their magical elf mushroom village.

An elf with a distinctive beard addresses the heroes as the remaining elves rush back to their homes and loved ones.

'Thank you for rescuing our people from the vile hobgoblins. Tonight, once everyone has had some time to relax, we can discuss what happened and give you your reward. Until then, our village is open to you. Many of our buildings should be large enough for you to enter, and it would be our honor to provide you with any services you require.'

Solsa wastes no time in rushing to what appears to be the center of the town and regaling the elves that will listen of her own adventures, and the unholy monster she vanquished in the depths of the earth.

Naiel, Tirya, and Boaris are left at the edge of the town, and should decide how to pass the time until night falls.
