It's a quest. I've wanted to run one for a while to help further flesh out a campaign setting I've been working on for a while. But before I can start, I'm going to toss out some options. While I'm sure some of the choices will have obvious outcomes, others (like country) won't.

Note: Tijei is listed as #13, Sidh is listed as #11

Race (Description) - [Country, Country, Country, Etc]

Catfolk (Gnoll/Human Hybrid, breeds true) - [Esther, Ghesti, Ohlster]

Dwarf (Short, Stout) - [The Dwarven Kingdoms]

Elf (Lithe, Intelligent, Sophisticated) - [Adina, Ghesti, Tijei]

Gnoll (A combination of hyena and house cat) - [Anaut, Esther, Ohlster]

Gnome (Dwarf/Human hybrid) - [Lebis, The Dwarven Kingdoms, Ghesti]

Halfling (Dwarf/Elf hybrid) - [Lebis, The Dwarven Kingdoms, Ghesti, Adina]

Half-Elf (Elf/Human hybrid) - [Adina, Ghesti, Tijei]

Half-Orc (Human/Orc hybrid) - [Carm, Sint, The Dwarven Kingdoms]

Harpy (Feathered, and wings that have four fingered hands) - [Tarta]

Human (The oldest race) - [Any other listed]

Kobold (Small and Scaled) - [Jessowa]

Lamia (Large and scaled, no legs) - [Carcissia, Paladecia, Ridea]

Lizardman (Large and Scaled, has legs)- [Arahe, Ta, Tarbouk]

Orc (Green and strong) [Carm, Sint, The Dwarven Kingdoms]

Tengu (Feathered, but of the flightless variety)- [Sidh, The Dwarven Kingdoms]

((My art is terrible, I know))

The patio is quiet other than for the soft scrapping of your brush against the marble floor and the sound of your dry breath. The uniform you wear does little to warm your skin from the chill of dawn, and the damp run off of soap water does nothing for your cracked and dry scales. But you keep straining your shoulders, to put weight into each slide of the brush, hoping that dirt might yield its hold on the tiles of the floor. Perhaps somewhere your pride is thrashing, tortured by this unnatural fortune of yours to serve, yet it is buried under the yolk of years that you've had to endure.

Abruptly, you stop for a moment and straighten your back. You hear something, the faint clap of claw on hard stone that grows closer. You press down into the tile again, lest you be caught dwadling.

"Ah, still cleaning. Slow, but atleast dutiful."

One of the 'young masters' Garola Sneppe, leans over the railing.

"Mind tell, it gets hard sometimes to remember names, what is yours again?" His voice is soaked with sour spite.

Your nails bite into the soft corkwood of your brush as you reply "Lisila"

He laughs, tapping the side of the rail for your attention like one might call for a dog. "Well then, Lizila" Garola suddenly flares his accent when he speaks your name. "Father wanted me to give this to you. Since you saved me the trouble of having to endure the odors of the servants quarters, I'll even play along."

You hear something drop in the decorative planter behind you, and the spoiled brat's footsteps once more retreating into the warmth of the mansion. You don't stop scrubbing until you hear him no more.

Then when sure of your privacy, you drop the brush into your bucket and turn to see what he dropped. A small envelope, sealed with the Sneppe wax seal. You reach out to take the delivery, but hesitate as your fingers brush against it. What if it is just a cruel prank of Garola?

Oh? Leaving his daughter to languish amongst servants doing hard labor, no attention paid, no love given, and then after YEARS he sends her a message? Face it missy, unless you want to be forced inside a giant mechanical clone of a dead god with the soul of your mother powering it in battle against other, bigger, angrier gods, leading to the total destruction of all life regardless of your choices, throw that letter over your shoulder and slither off into the sunset to find your own destiny.

You don't need them, and they don't want you, so make like a tree and become a rich and famous warlord. That'll show 'em.

You shake your head free of the paranoia, the young master Garola may be cruel but he isn't spoiled enough to anger his father. Taking the letter in your two hands, you take a moment to examine the seal itself. While you have seen this wax emblem before on letters sent, this is the first time you've actually held such a letter.

The wax itself is deep red, with an exotic glass like shimmer. It's not the wax used for common mail, but the sort used for official documents made for practicality and impression. A century ago, your mother might have used something similiar, no doubt imported from the strange lands of the west.

Inside is a traditional Ridean silk sheet parchement, the kind of which is still used in Ridea and Paladecia for official documents. The message upon it however is in the black ichor, called ink, that the gnolls brought with them from their homeland when they conquered Carcissia. For the gnolls, writing with the dark medium on the silk has become a courtly game as the ink likely to smear or blot upon the parchment in all but the hands of most finesseful writer.

As addressed, Lisila.
Servant.

In two days time, my son will be embarking via train to Tijea. The purpose of his travel will be to attend the Gojra University. It is my desire that you accompany him upon this trip. Further, once arrived I would wish that you find a place of rest. I will send you another letter then with further instructions.

Until further notice, you are freed of your normal duties. Make care to visit the 3rd Sneppe-Rogburn Bank sometime before departure and present them with this letter. Accept what they give you. You are otherwise free to enjoy the two days before your leave.

Master of the House, Head of House, Sneppe.

The rest of the letter is stamped with a bank requisition template, filled with numerous codes and words you do not understand, and bearing the mark of house Sneppe.

Oh, hey! Promotion from scrubber-slave to traveling manservant. Ladyservent. Ladyserpent? Whatever. More personal freedom and less back breaking work! I mean, sure, it'll mean spending more time with the unpleasant Garola, but that should be worth it, right?

Mop up what you were working on, return the cleaning supplies where they go, and contemplate this seemingly fortuitous turn of events and ponder what to do with your sudden semi-freedom. Anything you need to or would like to do before leaving town? Anyone you would want to see, or say goodbye to? Any preparations to be made?

How is it you learned to read, anyways? That's more education than one might expect for someone who was moments ago scrubbing a noble's floors for a living.

That would regrettably be the case. From what my mother told be before she was arrested, Carcissia was a land blessed by our gods, dutifully lead by the priests of the Alm(Pantheon of the South East), staying true to the faith even when the nobles brought forth their false kings ages ago. A great deal however has happened in the last century and a half, and the change in administration was one of many consequences.

There's tripcodes, if you're worried about variable ID. But for the most part, it's not really an issue.

What was your mother arrested for? How about your past- how old were you when the gnolls invaded, how'd you end up a house servant?

And think again on practical matters- anything you need or want to do before leaving town? Anyone you need to talk to or say goodbye to?

so how did you come under employment of this family and how bad has it been? Also what can you do other then clean?

As for what you should do with your new free time, hit the bank then make yourself a nice warm bath and try and end the day on a high note.

'Two days'

You pause and recline upon yourself, absentmindedly returning the letter to its envelope. The realization then comes upon you slowly, you are intimidated. Beginning from recent memory to now your life has been a series of strict routine, with choices the bequest of others rather than your own volition. To be now surrounded by choice, even of the limited sort, is a subtle terror that brings your mind to a halt. It gnaws at you until you feel empty. A blank revelation of how torpid your life has become, and this listless acceptance of that fact.

You return to your cleaning if only to get your mind working again. You do have some money, what little bit you haven't spent on food. You could treat yourself to something, real cuisine or a warm bath. Seeing as it is the early hours of morning however, you decide to sleep upon the choices with hopes that the rest will loosen up your mind.

Waking up in the afternoon you slide out of the grass filled pillow you slept on, the sun already flowing through the shutters of the window. Putting on your best blouse, you set outside to the busy streets. With the letter on you, a trip to the bank is possible at any time. But first you decide to have some food, taking to the market district.

Possible Choices
- Have some real food
- Go to the bathouse
- Shop for some trinkets
- Shop for something else?
- Other, you suggest.

((Does tgchan prefer 3rd, 2nd, or 1st person?))
>>
No. 508600 ID: d6ef5d

Hmm. I wouldn't mind a little self-indulgence, but the practical part of me wonders if there's anything we might need for this trip of ours. Might be worth poking around the market for something useful.

Other than that, of the relaxation choices, I like the bathhouse. Snakes are a sucker for a heat-sink. :V

>Does tgchan prefer 3rd, 2nd, or 1st person?
Depends on what you're going for. Here's a rather excellent analysis on some of the advantages of each, and how they come across specifically in regards to quests.

well since this is your first time in long while that you have actually have had to yourself I say get something good to eat and maybe find something relaxing to do but don't blow all your money as it would be nice to have some when we really need it somewhere down the line.

As for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person, I really don't care.
>>
No. 508607 ID: eaa372

Hit the bank first, the sooner we offload that letter the less likely it'll get swiped from you. There's a chance you might receive money that you can use to get better food than what you could get with your own money.
>>
No. 508609 ID: d6ef5d

>>508607
If we're worried about theft, the money is just as vulnerable on our person as the letter.

If and when we do cache it in though, we have to be careful not to blow it all. Presumably that's meant for living expenses for the semester or however long we're traveling.

>Hey, do you know your family? Were they prominent in anything in particular or just ordinary citizens?

My mother told me that before the Gnolls came, all Lamia were nobles, and that it it was our divine right and responsibility to lead the castes of humanity. Now all non-Gnolls are lesser people, and Lamia in a way fare worse than the humans. They enjoy keeping my kind in positions of servitude as a fashionable and cruel joke.

>>508368
>How is it you learned to read, anyways? That's more education than one might expect for someone who was moments ago scrubbing a noble's floors for a living.

I was taught by my mother, one hour every night. Almost everyone Carissia knows how to read some basic gnoll, as they print a great deal of ordinances from the presses. Those that can't read end up at the wrong end of the night patrol.

>>508409
>What was your mother arrested for? How about your past- how old were you when the gnolls invaded, how'd you end up a house servant?

My mother was arrested for failure to comply with ordinance. Specifically, the one that bars the meeting of more than 5 Lamia in an non-licensed zone. That was twenty years ago. I was already working as a washing girl for the Kneppe when she was taken, and I took her place.

Currently I am 41, which means I am a young adult. I wasn't however alive for when the gnolls took over, though it wasn't exactly an invasion...

>>508408
>Paladecia and Ridea, how have they faired?

Paladecia is a strange land. It is a place of rain, forest, and a temperate sun. Outside of that, all I ever learned of it from my mother is that they have turned to a heathen religion and not fit to call themselves Lamia.

Ridea however is a bit more difficult to explain. There was a war a century and a half ago in which their false king of Ridea sought to 'reclaim' Carcissia (That was a false claim though, because it was the nobles who rejected the high priest's authority, millenia ago). He believed that due to a Civil War in the lands of the dwarves, he could invade freely.

Our only allies outside of the Dwarven Kingdoms were the elves of Tijei, who in turn brought Ohlster into the fight. The gnoll ships were far beyond anything Ridea could muster, and their troops fought with the finest steel. It only took two years for their superior troops to overwhelm the numbers of Ridea.

And when they returned we greeted them as heroes, and they accepted our gifts and kindness as they waited for their journey home. Then without warning they attacked our armies, which were mostly depleted by the initial defense against Ridea. Crushing our millitary they rode unto the High Priest's temple, and forced him to bless their general as the new leader of Carcissia.

>>508420
>Also what can you do other then clean?

I Can do basic math, read and write, I know how to speak both Lamia and Gnoll... Outside of that I am without training.

Well what are your goals in life then and what is your opinion of the members of the house you serve? Also did anyone outside of the country get angry that the gnolls invaded and took over your country after they we welcomed in as heroes or did no one really even care since the gnolls we either to strong, the other countries were tired of war at that point, or just plain didn't care?
