In campaign mode each story is connected to the next.
It sacrifices set variety for a more cohesive experience.

In Theme mode the stories all adhere to a single theme provided at the beginning of the Game Session. This theme will be a constant throughout the stories, no matter where they might take place.

In Classic Mode, the settings and characters have no relation to each other. each story is a separate and often varied experience.

Classic Mode selected. The game is now loading. While we wait let's explain the rules.

The rules are simple. For each action a D6 must be rolled. If you roll 2 or higher then the character will succeed in the action no matter how outlandish. However, if a 1 is rolled the character will die in a needlessly cinematic way.

For now, the first rolling post will determine the action....

Loading Complete let's begin.

You are a traveler. Long have you wandered through the wilderness. Your beard is thick and bushy, your hands calloused and rough. You have been living on roots and berries for the last few days as you trekked through the forest. You have just emerged from said forest and now stand upon a hill overlooking a scene of natural beauty. You feel that at this moment, anything is possible...

Your thoughts are rudely interrupted as a small figure suddenly charges at you with a knife shouting "RAaaAGgRH!" You recognize him instantly as Gooblah Kahn, a Kobold Lord known for his effective combat strategy of burning everything. He used to be your best friend until a disagreement about hats turned you against each other. "At Lasssst I have Found you!" He shouts in a raspy voice. "Now you will Die!" "here's anotha one" you heard a small voice say. "Good work Charlie" another older voice replied, "Take this one and put it with the others." Soon you found yourself being lifted by small hands. It wasn't long until you were placed atop a mighty box fort. "This will do nicely" the older voice stated. Both children crawled into the mound of boxes. The sun shone brightly, you had a purpose again. But then you noticed, a thick bank of grey clouds slowly moving in from the northwest...The threat of rain was now a very real possibility.

Great cracks appear, shining bright against the darkness. You have never seen anything like it. you notice something glowing out of the corner of your eye. you look down. What was once your dingy brown robe is now awash with light. It has become a swirling kaleidoscope of color, it almost seems to be alight. you notice your tentacles also glow in the darkness, a great power seems to fill you. You feel...amazing, Godlike. You look around you, the buildings, the dirty street. Toys of a race that knows next to nothing about the universe. You hate it, you want to tear it all down...and you do. You widen the cracks, pull at the very heart of the universe. It cracks and ripples, and falls apart. Nothing is left but the void. Your universe is gone forever, and you find yourself adrift upon a pile of other similarly lost things. You are alone...no longer do you feel like a god. Your power sucked away with the death of your universe. Being all powerful is nothing without a medium for your power. But there are cracks still, rifts in the void. A universe above and a universe below. You will have another chance. You will make sure of it.

Avaris tried to form a bridge between the universes, but he found himself lacking. He had no home, no universe, he could only maintain himself when he remained in the void. He imagined he might be trapped in the void forever, an unending purgatory. He lasted there for an age, gathering the things that fell through the cracks. Little things mostly, occasionally he found parts of those who lived in the universe above. Humans they called themselves. These things he found, perhaps they might call them souls. He amassed a great knowledge. He discovered that if he could gain some real part of a human, not a soul, but something given freely, he could enter their world. There were things below as well, things that could restore his godhood. But few, if any, humans ever crossed between the planes. When they did, they were quickly devoured by the denizens of the void. As time went on, Avaris became impatient, so he slowly weakened the boundaries of both worlds in a hope that someone would notice. And they did. The Humans performed even better than Avaris had expected. They crafted a bridge, not just to the Void, but through it and right on into the next universe. It would not be long before he could escape and regain his lost power...

He offered her a simple deal, a part of her being for a portion of his knowledge, he had seen her and her affinity to the void and knew she would probably accept. She did, and Avaris plotted further. A scientist with a little too much ego and ambition, Just a little push was all that was needed to move him to do Avaris's work for him. A beast was captured, a creature from the lower world, A thing that held great power. A beast that could grant the power of a god. So it was that Avaris Bided his time, awaiting the perfect moment to emerge into the world of man. But he did not expect the champion. Few did. So in the moment of his greatest triumph, he found himself skewered upon a sword of hot flame. His slayer the unlikeliest hero of all.

The rules are simple. For each action a D6 must be rolled. If you roll 2 or higher then the character will succeed in the action no matter how outlandish. However, if a 1 is rolled the character will die in a needlessly cinematic way.

Currently, the highest rolling post will be accepted. If a 1 is rolled the action will result in a failure.

You imagine you can hear the thoughts of the other fish, perhaps control them. An idea forms in your mind, a sort of, Fish Hivemind...but all of a sudden something catches your eye. A nice juicy worm...floating in the river. You weren't sure how it did that, but you never pass up an easy meal. CHOMP. Suddenly you find yourself being pulled upwards towards the surface. You try to fight but it is no use. Your gills break the surface of the water and you gasp. Out of water you can't breathe! Then with a resounding THUMP something impacts your head, Knocking you senseless. Your last view is the bright sun, and a sharp curved blade of a fisherman's knife...

You are a lonely fisherman. You live in a small hut in the cleft of two mountains. You are very isolated out here and rarely see any other people. You have just caught a good number of fish from a nearby stream and are heading home when you get the oddest feeling. It's a sort of tingling feeling that sends a shiver down your spine. You can't be sure if it is good or bad, but something strange is about to happen, you are sure of it.

What will you do?

As you walk home you wonder at how you caught so many fish. The first one was so large as well...You decide it is of no matter and continue on your way.

Much later you arrive home, ready to clean and cook the fish. Much to your surprise you find a large gem lying upon your front porch. Very unusual. You pick it up. As close as you can guess, it is a big heavy diamond, the biggest you've ever seen. Perhaps you should visit the city at some point and get it appraised. But for now it is time to get to work, these fish are not going to prepare themselves. You leave the gem on the dining room table.

You gut the fish and place most of them in the icebox, soon you only have the large one left. This will make a fine dinner you think to yourself. As you cut into the fish your knife hits something oddly solid. You wiggle it a bit and something comes loose. It falls to the floor, rolling under the cupboard. Your fish temporarily forgotten you fish it out. It shines golden in the light of midday. As far as you can make out it is a sort of watch, a very odd sort of watch. It's two hands seem about equal length, and instead of moving clockwise, they seem to be slowly moving towards each other. It looks, very expensive. You place it on the table with the gem. What could possibly be responsible for this good fortune, you wonder.

What will you do?

You decide to stay at the table and continue eating the trout. It sure is delicious, compliments to the chef, heh. While you eat you examine the Gem. It's quite heavy, unsurprisingly. It's very tough, you think it's probably diamond, but then again, you are no jeweler. you spin it slowly in your hands, then stop. There seems to be a mark on one of the sides. You bring it into the light. What you see surprises you so much that you choke! A bone from the trout lodges in your throat. You cough and splutter but to no avail. The Gem clatters to the floor. You follow it shortly.

You are a young woman. You have left the city on a visit to see your father. Why he lives out in the middle of nowhere... well, only he knows the answer to that. Anyways, you have just opened the door to his house and found him dead on the floor. A half eaten dinner lies upon a plate on the table. The largest diamond you have ever had the pleasure of meeting lies on the ground beside the body, and a large gold watch ticks rhythmically from the table. You are taken aback. You don't actually know how to tell time, but the watch looks fancy, so you wear it around your neck. The diamond looks like it will have you living like a king, for at least a week. A good haul and you haven't even been in the other rooms yet! Hmm, curious, the Diamond seems to have some sort of markings on it. Some sort of fancy writin', your fence should be able to tell you what it means, if you even care. In any case, you have the house to yourself.

You take out the Map Pack and place it on the table. you flip through until you find the correct page, an old weathered map of the Hooktowe Mountains. Hmm the closest mine appears to be in a small settlement 15 miles to the south of here. The mine is called, Blackfeather Mine, in the settlement of Blackfeather. The fast travel system does sometimes take a while to load. Of course the game might be frozen... A cold uncertainty lodges itself the back of your mind. Dare you reset the console? You would hate to go to all that trouble if its just loading. The seconds crawl by with agonizing slowness. It's only been 5 minutes yet it feels like days have gone by. You should have gotten this for the computer like your brother recommended. You're sure there is some sort of mod or at least a fix for that version. But nooo, you had to grab the game for your T-box. Curse your stubborn brand loyalty, one of these days Truecorp may just lead you astray. you decide to grab a snack while You're waiting for the game to load. You check the fridge, A lone True-Cola lies forlornly upon a shelf. It lies on its side, as though toppled by a careless hand and forgotten. The rest of the fridge is pretty much empty save for something squishy in the far back. you grab the True-Cola. It's far from your favorite soda, but it will do for now, well at least until you decide to get some groceries. you rustle through what remains of the pantry and find an old crumpled bag of potato chips. Snack Time is going fairly well today. you spend several minutes fumbling with the bag, and several more trying to find a clean bowl. Both of these tasks are managed without incident. This Snack Time is one for the record books. You return to the TV room. Your game has not loaded, something else has though. "uuuuh...Improvised edition? I think?"
"And...how long have you been playing?"
"Just a couple of hours...well maybe most of the day...and part of yesterday..."

"You are currently facing an unstable rift, bits of the game are trying to get out through it. Don't worry they can't. Now the rift is a liiitle bit unstable and is likely expanding, It will eventually stop, after which it will collapse. Now the problem is, the rift's collapse might take a feew things with it. "Yeah, I have one too, I'm getting out of here and calling the police"
"Uh...I did mention your house was halfway in the void right? And even if you could get out, you're tied to the rift already. You'll get pulled in anyways. Hell if you didn't have a Truecorp phone we'd probably have been disconnected ages ago.
"Alright...So what do I do"
"Alright, We're going to need to turn off the console. Now you can't use a soft reset you said, because you can't get to your controller, and you can't get to the console itself because its probably at the end of miles of interdimensional tunnels, you'd never reach it in time. But perhaps you can turn it off from INSIDE!"
"Ok I think you've lost me..."

You want to descend as Heather told you, you really do. But there is something irresistible about that star in the distance. The path calls for your feet. The light shimmers around you. You take a step forward...and then another and another. soon you are walking briskly down the path of stars. The great glow of the distant star calls to you. There is something there, something not of this world, something...magical. You can feel it, you don't know how but you can. Suddenly you stop. You stare downward, below the path, into the swirling clouds of stars. You return your gaze to the shining star at the end of the path. You suddenly get the feeling that you stand at a crossroads. A choice must be made.Do you cast yourself into the pit? Do you dare hope to return to your previous life? Or do you continue down the path, leaving all you were behind. You hesitate. The draw of the star is strong, but your will is stronger. You will find a way out of this! You step off the platform, and tumble into oblivion...

You find yourself staring at the single bright star, the only constant in your shifting surroundings. You watch it grow smaller and smaller as you fall. Suddenly you are surrounded by blue. A bright golden sun hangs in the air above. Small wisps of clouds drift slowly across the sky. The air becomes arid and you feel yourself impact upon something, something grainy or dusty...perhaps...sandy? Your eyes remain locked on that single star, now central to a fancy watch. It falls after you landing heavily on your chest. Somehow you manage to keep ahold of your phone. A small worried voice breaking the almost oppressive silence.

"Hello? Hello? are you still there...I heard a thump...are you ok? Damnit I don't even know your name...please say you are ok...hello...?"

(Dice Rolls are now in effect, you may now roll 1d8 instead of 1d6 to determine the result of an action. Talking is a free action and does not require any roll)

"Yeah Heather, I'm fine...just a little...surprised. I mean, I knew I was falling, but I didn't expect to actually hit the ground..."
"So it worked then? Perfect!"
"Heather...where am I?"
"In a way, you are in the game itself, Succeed or Die Quest that is."
"Somehow that fails to fill me with confidence, what am I supposed to do, if I even survive long enough to do it?"
"Well, you are going to need to shut down the console from within the game. This means you are going to have to find some way to access the internal workings of the game somehow. I very much doubt its going to be straightforward, the way these games work it will probably be hidden in a metaphor or an Easter egg or something. You'll have to be clever, think outside the box. If worst comes to worst you may even have to break the game"
"And how would I do that?"
"How would I know? I've never played any of the games from the Succeed or Die franchise. You'll have to figure it out yourself"
"I don't like this, it all seems like a shot in the dark to me."
"We don't have much of a choice. I can't tell how long that rift is going to stay open, and our connection could cop out at any moment. So get a move on"
"Alright, alright..."
And so the game continues.

What are you going to do?

You try to pull up the debug menu...though you don't believe you've ever seen one before. You strain and strain, but just can't seem to properly visualize it. As you lie on your back struggling to do something useful you hear a metallic jangling sound, getting ever closer. A shadow looms over you. You feel something pointed and sharp press into your ribs.
"Now what do we have here" Imagine sand and dust blowing in the wind across rusty hinges and ancient buildings. Imagine the instinct and cleverness of an old coyote. Imagine if you will the hiss and bite of a rattlesnake and the restrained power of a holstered pistol. Throw in the rich textured creak of a weathered oaken door and maybe you'll begin to understand the sound of this man's voice. The voice seemed to hold more personality than it rightly should. It was a voice that seemed to be everywhere and everything and it made it very clear, you did not belong.

What are you going to do?

You carefully walk down the street. Your heart thumps in your chest, you are absolutely sure that at any moment your doom will walk around the corner. Luckily you make it to the saloon unscathed. You can hear few sounds coming from the saloon. This town seems sparsely populated, so you guess not many people are around, especially at this time of day. You stop outside the entrance and check your inventory.
Inventory:
A small Shard of some sort of Pottery.
A stained Coffee Mug.
A Toy Dinosaur.
An Unusual Marble.
A Dirty Rock.
A Bent Fork.
An Old Photograph.
A Golden Dollar
An Odd Watch, Weltgericht is engraved on the back in decorative letters.
A Cell Phone, Truecorp Brand. It seems to work...
A Game Manual for "Succeed or Die Quest: Improvised Edition"
Copius amounts of Pocket Lint
One True-Cola
One Bag of Chips

Hmm, this thing is getting cluttered. You should probably clean it out one of these days

[EXAMINE MANUAL]
You flip through the manual, scanning for anything useful, anything at all...

You have no idea what you are looking for, but to your surprise...you find something. All the way at the back a piece of paper sticks out over the other pages. You are surprised you hadn't seen it before. It appears to be a note from your brother James.

Something about a thing he added to the game? Is that even possible? Come to think of it, he did have some odd friends.

You're kind of angry that he messed around with your console. Though, he may have just saved you a lot of trouble. You will have to see about this code of his...

You search for a panel. You search the inside of the saloon first. Nothing really stands out. There are no patrons, and the barman seems half asleep. No panels, computers, or even a basic terminal. You find nothing. You head back outside, demoralized and worried. Time was ticking down, you needed to get out of here before...well you didn't particularly want to find out what happened when the rift collapsed. Then, out of nowhere, you felt a pull. You aren't sure why but you are drawn to the back of the saloon. A plank slightly out of place. With just a simple pull a portion of the wall itself pulled away, revealing a panel within. It was shiny, glossy, completely inactive. You slowly drew your fingertips across its obsidian surface. To your surprise the thing comes to life. A keyboard slides from a slot and the Truecorp Logo shines brightly on the screen. Finally, you are getting somewhere.

Now...What was that code again?...

Ah Yes, you remember

A K S J 1 1 3 7 P...

you quickly type the code. The screen changes.

Loading...Please Wait... It declares.

At that moment you hear the one voice you desperately wanted to avoid...

"Now just what do you think you're doing son? The Sheriff says, his voice like a cold knife.

You hear a very troubling 'KER-CLICK' just behind you. Things are about to get interesting...

What are you going to do?

Several termites starts coming out of the wall near where you were pulling it open.
Explain to the sheriff that you are a pest exterminator by trade.
