Look, to put a fine point on it, he may have said that, but who really takes a villain seriously when he talks like that? I mean, sure, we beefed up the orbital defense grid for a few years, we trained a small force to prepare, but...

He didn't show! It's been ten years! The force has dismembered, the orbital defense returned to normal...

Dammit! I should have known this day would come!I have to get my gun!

Do you at least have some power armor? How about a communication line to the military or something?

Also where's Meiko and Elaine?

With my status I have free access to the local precinct's armory. Not sure what they have but... it's a good first stop.

Elaine's at school. Meiko is at work, as a policewoman.

I've been wondering the same thing. You've gone soft, Jon. Slipped into complacency. Yours was the opportunity to be exceptional, and instead you achieved mediocrity.

But all is not lost. You've proved you have the potential, it's time to realize it and be the hero once again. But first you're going to have to give us a rundown of your available resources. What is the current diplomatic state between the humans and the Altans? We need to know what military forces we have at our disposal. This is a much larger theater of operations than last time, and you won't be able to do this by yourself. You need to meet up with the local military and get yourself some equipment, along with situation updates.

R-right!

The Altans have their own government now, with Nova as their 'High Operator'. Diplomatic ties have been excellent, since the Altans are capable of doing things for medicine we still haven't been able to. Humanity has all but become one main government. I think the term is that the United Planets are a Hegemony over the smaller governments of Earth. New Mars is essentially UPA land.

Available resources?
Well, this police station has roughly 40 men and women. I'm the only one with a Gift, that of greater physical and mental prowess. Meiko has all of the men armed and in riot gear. They've managed pretty well so far, but that isn't the issue.

We've lost contact with Nova and the Altan States entirely. Not even my daughter, who has a telepathic link with him, can sense him. The most we know is that he is alive somewhere. The satellites have vanished, and we can see a huge black and red planet in the sky. Peices of it fall down and are actually clumps of Achille's creatures. He has yet to show himself, but I have a feeling he's here for me.

Military might from Earth is unavailable for about a year and a half. We can't contact them at the moment. We haven't heard from their base here on Mars, either. We do not have any idea what is going on, planetwise, but the enemy has taken New Seattle and the area around it at least. The enemies seem to be massing from the south, or southwest.

((BLK is where you are: New Seattle. YLW is the military base here. RED is the last known location of Nova, and the capital of the Altan States.

On the plus side, the standard Achilles infantry is fairly easy to kill. The numbers is the problem, but their Operator isn't here, according to our Altan emmisary. If he was, we'd be losing all sorts of ground. Thus, he suggests, we have two courses of action:

1: We evacuate, head to Earth, and fetch the biggest army we can muster.

2: We assassinate the Operator. Achilles.

And then there's the less effective but easier methods:

3: take our 40 men and women, carve a swath through the enemy forces to Nova, who can then help us further.

4: Make a stand here until the military arrives.

"Remember." he says, "even though it seems hopeless, they are but weak and worthless infantry. We could hold out here for years."

So you have no communication either on-world or off, apparently no idea who's even in command, negligible combat power, no hope of rescue, almost no situational awareness, and your enemy commands a planetoid's mass worth of enemies.

Surrender.
