Ruins and ancient tombs make ready lairs and nests for all manner of creatures. This results in many would-be heroes seeking out forgotten valuables that may rest deep in the darkest recesses of these places, then subsequently dying and adding more to the pile.

This cycle ensures any given dungeon is almost never devoid of riches to be plundered and the stories of those who enter to find their fortune inspire more potential fodder adventurers.

A life of riches and adventure or a dusty pile of bones for some other adventurer to pick through in passing. There is no middle ground. Which will you be?

The leaves rustle as a lone figure pops out of the bushes.
"Alright! It doesn't look like anyone has been here in forever. I bet it's loaded with shiny stuff. All I have to do is walk in and pick it up!"
Ikki Vishtkin, Rhiskitai adventurer of the highest order. Actually, she is just a ratfolk street urchin. Tired of poverty, she has wandered into the wilderness to find her fortune... or death. Try not to let that happen, will you?

Entering the broken gate, Ikki is confronted by a pair of zombies.
"Oh crap! I'm not starting off on the right foot here..."

Odds are good the zombies can't move as far as Ikki (she is specifically quick), but we don't know if they move 2 or 3 spaces. If we move up, the top zombie will close in but not reach Ikki and we'll have several turns to fight it one-on-one before the lower zombie can catch up, and hopefully we can take it out before the other zombie actually gets there.

Alright so we're down to 14 health, have 5 exits with only one being locked. we can either go to the top right door, top left door, the hallway near the bottom, or we can leave. Truth be told I'm kinda in favor for leaving selling the useless stuff and see if we can't get a health potion or something or at least rest to gain some health back then come back. Hrm. They both have the same average damage output, though the rapier has a higher max, and a lower min.

Do we have weapon proficiencies to take into account? Does the added reach of the rapier matter in this system?

Ikki isn't really coordinated enough to benefit from dual wielding yet, but the rapier does have the added advantage of being long enough to attack corner squares.

It also makes her feel like more of a real adventurer, or it would, if the guy who used to own it hadn't died horribly while wearing it.

It's kind of amazing how adjusting a few straps made the armor of what kind of looks like a fully grown human man fits a barely five foot ratgirl. Probably best not to think about it.

You know, for a makeshift reach weapon, you can try attaching something to the rope. It'd be a makeshift reach weapon, though. But possibly worth considering--any methods to incur injury without suffering it can help.

Probably better off just throwing stuff, though. The knife, the rocks lying around, even the bucket. At the very least, you can piss those rats off enough to make them attack you through the doorway.

The final room of the dungeon that she can get to seems to be an old kitchen. Not much here, except an old cleaver, a few cans rolling around, an empty cauldron and a big slab of dry, cracked, and suspiciously green meat.

The shelf is bare, the barrels are mostly empty with some liquid sloshing around in the bottom and smell kind of musty and acrid. The ashes are made of burnt wood in kind of an old, slimy wad in the bottom of the oven. The chimney goes outside so the place doesn't get smoked up.
The meat is the finest cut of dusty, salt-encrusted, dried up, rock hard old ham you'll ever find, but it might distract a monster. It might even knock it out it she hits it in the head.

Okay, those are Nordic runes, spelling out words in english. Translation threw me for a bit since 3 words are gibberish-looking proper names. Assuming I didn't screw up, the inscription reads:

Authrand Kor home of Dhorga and

I suppose we could try claiming to be a friend and seeing if the slime backs down? Strikes me as more a general warning than a speak friend and enter puzzle solution, though.

>fighting the slime
I suggest holding ground, letting it advance, and then trying to stab the core.

Be careful, that thing may be made of something corrosive. It may be able to damage your gear. (Might be better to use the already rusty sword instead of ruining the rapier?).

Attack then run for it. You should not fight unarmored.

Then I guess grab the pants off that earlier skeleton and head back to town to rearmor yourself.

Move 1 left and 3 up, then attack the slime diagonally. If things keep going south you'll be closer to the door and can move away if needed.
>>

Yeah, this isn't a fight we're supposed to win, this is a fight we're supposed to run past because we're speedy and it's slow.

So, uh, yeah, run back, put back on your shirt and some pants, then dash past the slime.

Or does it look wounded? Jeese, there's really no way to tell how hurt it is.

19 health, no potions, our best clothes where just vaporized by the ass slime, and other then the rapier and money we're kinda back to square one and the enemies from here on out are most likely going to be just as tough if not tougher. See if there's any loot in this room, equip spare clothes and head back to town for the day. We need to get some more gear and potions anyways so we don't die exploring the rest of this place.

Ikki puts on her old clothes and some gross zombie pants. She decides not to pick up the remains of the horrible acid monster, but finds 252 seta which couldn't be seen floating around inside the slime earlier for some reason. Probably science.

She locks up the dungeon again and keeps the key, now she basically has her own personal moldy, dark, crumbling pit of death. Moving on up in the world.

She decides that gearing up would be best and returns to town. Where to?

Sorry to hear that. I'd love to see this quest continue.

When question continues then head by the armor shop and maybe the weapon shop before going to the tavern. Might as well try to look prepared before recruiting others or making merry. Try to get some custom markings on your kit so it's not very stealable.
