It's time to become a real man. Like your late father and his late father before him, you have come to the Ransack Junction recruitment booth to sign up for the EDF. The road will be hard, and it will probably end in death, but it'll all be worth it to follow in the footsteps of your ancestors, to protect the world and raise that glorious chant: "EDF! EDF! EDF!"

The recruiting officer squints at you from his makeshift desk. "Name," he grunts.

You hesitate. All the great EDF sergeants had cool, badass names, not something weak. They had hard names, suave names, something like...

"'Flint Zack' Harvey, sir!"

The officer's expression changes. He's heard the name before. "Harvey?" he asks. "Like 'Flame Void' Harvey's son? Ohhhhh, you're Nat--"

"'Flint Zack', yes sir!"

The recruitment officer makes no comment, just gives you a knowing nod and writes down your preferred name in his pad. "Well 'Flint,' you got big shoes to fill, son. What're you signing up to be, an officer? Or a ranker like your dad?"
>>

a ranker, gotta start filling those shoes somewhere, right?
>>

Ranker. Even if we get an officer's position based on merit, everyone would think it's because of 'ol dad.

The choice comes easily for you. There's only one place where you can get the full EDF experience, and that's with boots on the ground as a ranker.

The officer cracks a grin when you tell him your choice. "Good man," he chuckles. "A dead one, but still. The bus leaves in an hour, kid, welcome aboard."

Just an hour and you'll be out of Ransack Junction forever. You think about how you'll spend that time. You're unsure if you want to stop by your father's grave again, or head home to grab some money just in case. And there's your friend Spencer to think about too--you wanted to say goodbye to him before you headed out. Your goals are on opposite sides of town from each other, so you may not have time for everything...

Dead people can't hear you, and friends are more important the money.

Go and say goodbye to Spencer.
>>

Grab your stuff, and give a fair well to your friend, seems likea good plan. Still, you have a living mom, what? What's up with her these days.

(You can say something to your dad getting on the bus, making the transfer from son to soldier.)

As you head for the edge of town, you remember that home is also where your mother is. She was always against you becoming an EDF soldier like your dad, and going home might be awkward as hell....

You reach the edge of town. Spencer's at his usual haunt, fishing in the little lake a small ways off the road.

As you approach, he breaks his focus to turn and smile at you. "Natasha!" he exclaims. "I didn't expect you here this early, man! What's up?"

Hey man, I came to see you one last time before I go.

Don't call me by my real name anymore man, I'm going away joining the EDF. Going by Flint Zack' harvey now. I'll miss you man. Hey uh.... I didn't tell my mother I was leaving. Should I tell her or what, she didn't want me to end up like dad. Something about its enough having one man in this family die unnecessarily for a stupid cause.

You hesitate for a moment, but you get right down to it. "Hey man," you say with a nervous grin, "I, uh...I came to see you one last time before I left."

"Wait, what?" Spencer exclaims. "Don't tell me you signed up today?"

"Yeah...."

Spencer sighs hard. "Damn, man. I mean, I didn't think you'd just...."

Spencer's voice trails off for a moment. A resigned smile starts creeping onto his face. "Ah well," he sighs. "You were going someday, I know. Man, it's a little rushed though, don't you think?"

"Uhhhh..."

"Nah, it's fine. I guess I'm--uh, Natasha?"

They're all pointing at you.

"Holy shit!" Spencer screams. Bolts are missing the two of you by inches. "What is that?!"

You put on more speed as you head towards...where?! In town you could use the buildings as cover, but that would also mean that this thing could start shooting at other people. But if you keep in the open it'll be suicide!

You set down Spencer and the two of you rush up to the officer.

"What the hell?" you gasp. "What--"

"No time Flint," the officer grunts. "We've got things to do. You wanted to be in the EDF, this'll have to be your training.

"We got a war on our hands kid, and the two of us are the only EDF forces in this dump of a town. Way I see it, we got three tasks: get the civvies outta here, get ourselves outta here, and kill any sons of bitches who want to stop us."

Spencer's still shaking, but he pipes up. "H-hey, I could help warn people if you want, man!"

The officer nods before addressing you again. "While he does that, I'm gonna make sure no more of these turret shits try floating into town. You wanna help me, or help your pal get people out of the area?"

you need a weapon, the less hostiles there are the less chances they will get to hurt someone.
>>
No. 599511 ID: 879a42

Agreed, we need to stop forces from attacking, but we need reinforcements (unless this is happening everywhere) and we should have someone alert the town to get to cover/arm themselves etc. Unless we have radio have Spencer do it when its relatively safe, get him to any kind of alarm system or something. Just ideas to use as they are convenient.

"I need a gun," you tell the officer. "I'll help, Spencer can warn the--"

The recruiting officer starts dashing off. "Get to the EDF station in the center of town, I'll cover you," he barks back at you. "Guns in there, and a PA system to warn everyone! Move it!"

You and Spencer make for the station, working through the streets of Ransack Junction easily. Before long you hear the crack of the officer's rifle on the other side of town--the man's fast.

"I don't like this, man," Spencer says nervously. "Doesn't it seem a little quiet right now?"

You reach and enter the station without issue. A desk terminal sits near the back wall of the foyer. There's two doors here, one leading to the armory and one leading upstairs.

"We'd better hurry...where's that PA thing?" Spencer asks. "Think I could use that computer to find it?"

Where the hell is everyone? Was everyone in the city abducted all at once or something? Makes me wonder why the EDF soldier is still around.

"Sure man, go nuts." You enter the armory while Spencer moves for the terminal. It's tiny, only a few small arms and a spare launcher. This rifle looks like it could pack a punch, though--

"Oh, god!"

The fuck? The invaders have been here for longer than we thought! No time to mess with the computer, go through the other door to upstairs. The PA system should be relatively easy to spot, I expect.
