A murder, some random run-down house on the outskirts of the city, yes.

>Do you recognize the body?

You've never met him in person, but yeah. That's Elliot Keyes. He's...he WAS a notorious mercenary, beating and killing for the highest bidder. You were supposed to track him down, but it looks like someone else found him first.

The scene is as secure as you can get it. Beverly seems to be calling it in already, so you wait quietly until she finishes.

>The truth. If you can't trust your partner, who can you trust?

That's not entirely true, you guess. Talking about your feelings isn't really your strong suit, but you'll give it a shot.

"I guess I'm just kinda pissed off. We've both been working our asses off chasing this guy so he can be brought to justice, and then just when we're about to corner him for good, some asshole offs the guy."

"Minnie, when was the last time you ate?" Beverly asks pointedly. She sort of sounds like she's scolding you, which is rich coming from a girl three years younger than you.

"I don't remember," you say, which is the truth. You definitely didn't eat lunch, but did you have breakfast? Probably not. "I've been so busy-"

"-with the manhunt," she interrupts. "Yeah, I know, but you should really take better care of yourself. You can't starve yourself every time you've got a tough case. How about after our shift ends, we grab something to eat, and then you can go home and get your ass some sleep."

>How about you and me go to that new Mexican place after our shift ends? I've suddenly got a hankering for chunky salsa.

Your shift is actually almost over, and you know that backup is already on its way. You can wait for them to come and hand off the investigation to go out to eat with Beverly, or you can stick around and examine the crime scene. If you stay, though, you risk exhausting your FOOD or SPOONS stat.

Your FOOD stat tracks how much you have eaten recently. Since it's been a while since the last time you ate, it is very low. If you exhaust your FOOD stat, you will pass out from hunger.

Your SLEEP stat tracks how much physical energy you have. You had a cup of coffee recently, and you're used to late nights, so it's not quite as low as your other stats. If you exhaust your SLEEP stat, you will fall asleep on the job.

Your SPOONS stat tracks how much mental energy you have. Finding Keyes's body took a pretty big chunk out of your SPOONS stat, and you spent a lot of them on the manhunt. Which ended up being a waste of time. If you exhaust your SPOONS stat, you will be at a high risk of a panic attack for as long as it remains empty, and you will have fewer SPOONS tomorrow.

Still, "see justice carried out" is one of your goals, and you can probably also win brownie points with the Captain for working overtime. What should you do?

>You won't see justice done if you work yourself till you pass out, and that will hardly please the captain either.

"Okay," you say, and she lights up. "Just...let me do what I can before backup comes, alright? I need to feel like I accomplished something today." She looks like she's about to argue, but she doesn't say anything in the end. You take that as an agreement, and pull out your phone.

>Take pictures of the entire area and open anything suspicious. You can do more thinking tomorrow, so go somewhere on the way back home and get something with lots of nutrients.

The camera isn't as high quality as the top-tier ones the CSI's have, but you want personal copies to go over later. If they pull you off the investigation, you won't have access to any of the stuff they gather anyway.

Besides. Sometimes, evidence gets lost in the shuffle. A backup couldn't hurt.

This house doesn't belong to Keyes, but he's made several stops here over the past few weeks. The place is, frustratingly, pretty empty. There's a mattress by the wall and a banged up trash can by the door, but that's the only furniture in here. Most of the staining on the floor was probably here before he was. The blood wasn't. There's a lot of it, but that's not so surprising. After all, the victim has been stabbed numerous times in the back, and his throat is slit wide open.

"He wasn't exactly a model citizen. I'm sure there were loads of people who wanted to take a stab at it." You chuckle. "Don't see a murder weapon, though. Maybe the perp took it with them."

"Or maybe they hid it in the room," she replies.

From the outside, the trash can is not particularly notable. It's the big metal kind you usually see on street corners. A little rusted and banged up, but ordinary. There's a bit of blood smeared on the lid that you couldn't see before. It looks like a transfer, probably from someone's hand. That's all you can do without touching anything.

"Beverly, do you have any gloves on you?" you ask. You definitely don't carry any with you. "I want to check out whatever's in that can."

"No, but I won't need them. I don't leave prints, remember?" Oh shit, yeah. You don't know how you keep forgetting that Beverly's hands are artificial past the wrist. They don't produce oils or have ridge patterns. Ergo, no fingerprints. Still, they're very good, so you usually just forget.

Beverly opens the trash can, carefully avoiding smudging the bloodstains, and you immediately wish she hadn't. An acrid, sickly-sweet stench fills the air, and you grimace. There's really no mistaking that.

"Vomit," Beverly confirms, slamming the lid back onto the can. "I'm not digging through that for you, Minnie. I love you, but not that much."

>Strange, why splatter blood everywhere except near the trash can? Were they making a statement? I don't think you'll find anything in there that the perpetrator didn't think about, so treat what you find as a public message from vigilante to the local police force.

If this is a message to the police force, you cannot fathom what it could mean.

>You only have a minute or so until the others arrive and your shift ends. Maybe you'll just take this opportunity to think through some of your theories.
Look at the door. Any signs of forced entry?

From the blood, it looks like he was attacked in bed, which suggests he didn't know his attacker was here, or he didn't have time to react before they stabbed him. That suggests either surprise, stealth, or someone he allowed to get close to him.

Can you tell if he crawled from the bed or was dragged? In the second case, that supports the idea the assailant was trying to get to something.

Vomit on the trashcan means clear signs of intoxication and the nature of the wounds suggest there wasn't much of a struggle.

Hmm theres no blood tracked on the way to the trashcan. You wont be able to tell for sure until its tested if the vomit is from Keyes or someone else (the muderer?) but the blood on the trashcan makes me think the muderer.

So they kill him on the bed (while hes sleeping?) getting blood spray on themselves, loose their cool and end up puking in the trashcan (first timer?), then drag the body across the room spreading the blood across the floor? Well thats just my initial guess but I'm not a crime scene analyst by far.

It doesn't look like it, no. But while you're on that subject, you notice that one of the windows in the room is not boarded up. You didn't bother looking over there before, but it's wide open. There's probably a fire escape there, so you guess someone could have gotten in or out that way.

>Can you tell if he crawled from the bed or was dragged? In the second case, that supports the idea the assailant was trying to get to something.

You're no CSI, but that one, particularly long bloodstain on the wall by the mattress looks like the kind of spurt you get when you slit someone's throat. You don't think most people can do much crawling after having their throats slit, so...make of that what you will.

>Ask Beverly if you can get your hands on some of the case files after this. Between the two of you, surely you know someone who can tell you what forensics finds in here later, yeah?

"Hey," you say, retreating back toward the door, "Do we know anyone in forensics who could get us a report once they're done with this mess?"

As the car pulls into the restaurant, you do a quick check-in. Your FOOD stat is getting pretty critical. You were able to replenish some SPOONS and SLEEP in the car, probably enough to get you through dinner at the very least.

It's a local burrito place. Good, but never particularly crowded. You order something that by your standards, is probably pretty healthy. You then load it up with twice the recommended amount of hot sauce. It's been that kind of day.

"It seems like either the killer was a rookie or...drunk maybe. Either way, the blood on the trash can makes me think the vomit was theirs, not the victim's. No signs of a struggle, and I'm thinking Keyes didn't have a chance to fight back anyway. Probably approached from behind. Maybe they were after something. Keyes was killed on the mattress then dragged off it, and then the mattress was cut open, so..."

A cold wind blows through the restaurant.

"We'd better start investigating tomorrow," says Beverly. "Let's see. There's the ex...Ramirez, was it? The crime scene belongs to...Kai and Mei Green. Keyes had dealings with the Greenback Gang too, someone there could've wanted him dead, and he ran afoul of one of those vigilantes a while back too-"

"A hero?" You raise an eyebrow skeptically. "Don't you think the UHL is a little too...heroic to pull something like this?"

"I didn't say hero," she replies. "I said vigi. His name's Crusader. Real brutal guy. He goes after villains, but he uses deadly force. Honestly, I'm a little shocked you hadn't heard of him."

"I've been busy," you say, frowning. That's an awful lot of leads to pursue. You don't need to make a decision about what to do now, but it's a good time to start thinking about it.

You did your research before you discovered the crime scene. Benefits to this being a manhunt-turned-murder-investigation, you guess. Kai Green is the house owner. Keyes was using the place as a safehouse for about a week leading up to the murder, and surveillance shows that on several occasions, Green and Keyes were in the house at the same time. Mei is Kai’s teenage sister. You aren’t really sure whether or not she knew Keyes was staying in their house.

As far as you know, neither Green has any associations with Ramirez.

>There are organizations of superheroes and supervillians in this world? Do they have any superhuman powers?

Mmm, in a manner of speaking. The United Heroes' League was established about five years ago. It's an association of superheroes funded and regulated by the government. It's a pretty transparent attempt to control what used to be a pretty concerning rate of vigilantism. Police forces couldn't hope to stamp out vigilantes, so the government decided to regulate them again. The New Samson/Golden Groves chapter of the UHL is basically just another civil service agency, like the police and fire departments.

And yeah, most of the heroes have powers. The ones that don't are craaaazy competent, but don't mesh well with the police force. Actually, a lot of the heroes don't play well with others, or with the bureaucracy. (You hate those guys almost as much as the fire department. They’re too dramatic and theatrical, they’re BARELY accountable to anyone, and they make the police force look bad. Masked assholes.)

As for the villains...“Villain” is just slang for really big-name, high-publicity criminals. Some of them are the sort to run around in tights or armor and have powers. Some of them are just normal guys who are absurdly dangerous or absurdly vile, or both. Lots of villains run with gangs to make it harder to just arrest them.

The Greenback Gang, which you heard Beverly mention before, is one such gang. Almost entirely supers, and mostly minors. Its leader is a ferrokinetic named Penny Dreadful, one of two known adults in the gang. They mostly do low-profile robberies and peddle drugs, but you wouldn’t underestimate them. You’re pretty sure Penny Dreadful hired Keyes for something a while back, but you don’t know what it is.

(Image may contain graphic content? It's bloodstains.)

“What do you know about Crusader’s MO?” you ask.

“Well, I’ll admit that this isn’t a textbook case,” she says. “Crusader is a super. He shoots plasma beams from his hands that are strong enough to burn a clean hole through a human torso. He also wears these metal gauntlets that function kind of like brass knuckles when he just plain wants to beat the shit out of someone.”

“Doesn’t sound like our perp at all,” you observe.

“No, not really, but this guy isn’t a serial killer the way you think of one. He doesn’t exactly leave calling cards. Pretty sure he just works with whatever he has on hand. So just because the MO is different doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t him.”

“Have any of his crime scenes been this bloody before?” you ask, remembering the vomit in the trash can. There’s a big difference between an instantly-cauterized plasma wound and a stab wound.

"What do we know about the history between Crusader and the victim?" you ask, taking a bite of your burrito. The hot sauce burns your mouth on its way down, but you don't mind. You've been eating your food this spicy since you were little, so it's sort of old hat to you. Even more old hat than bloody crime scenes, you figure.

"Crusader's been going after people associated with the Greenback Gang, trying to take out their support structure. He's probably gearing up for a more direct attack," says Beverly.

"Ballsy. The Greenbacks are powerful." You frown, then amend your statement. "Or at least, Penny Dreadful is. Who knows about those kids she leads around. Don't tell me he's conducting this...crusade of his on his own."

"As far as anyone can tell, he works solo, yeah. Anyway, he and Keyes had a shootout near the western part of town back in March. No major injuries or civilian casualties, pretty minor deal."

You frown at her. This is useful information, but you can't help but be a little put out at her.

"When were you going to tell me this?" you ask her. "During the manhunt, I should have known everything about Keyes!"

"It didn't seem relevant at the time. I misjudged." She looks down. It does...seem like she's genuinely sorry. "I'm sorry, Minerva. I really am."

Forgive Bev! I mean, it's pretty clear it was a minor thing that she didn't think was relevant to the case, not something she was purposefully keeping from you.

On another note, ask Bev her opinion on who would have more motive to murder Keyes? We know the options but it might be good to get her input. Even a gut feeling is fine!

You take a deep breath. As peeved as you are that Beverly didn't think this was worth sharing, it's not really her fault that it seemed irrelevant until now. Besides. You think by now you're probably both pretty exhausted.

"It's fine. I'm just glad you're telling me now," you say. "I think it could be important. I guess...we'll have to find out tomorrow."

"Yeah," she says, finishing off her food. "Maybe we should head home now. No offense, but you kind of look like you're about to either pass out or cry."

"I'm pretty beat," you admit. "But I just wanted to ask you one more thing. I know it's early in the case for this, but who do you think makes the most sense, just motive-wise?"

She folds up the wrapper from her burrito neatly, staring down at it instead of making eye contact. She thinks for a while before replying.

"I want to talk to Josefa Ramirez," she says, sighing. "Whatever the nature of their relationship with Keyes was, I doubt it ended well. A partner scorned, and all that... Besides. If I'm wrong and they left amicably, don't they deserve to know Keyes is dead?" You nod. "Alright. Can we please go now?"

You only live a few blocks away, but Beverly insists on driving you home. She pulls up to the curb in front of your building, and on the balcony above you is none other than your next door neighbor. You don't know very much about Amelia Ito, besides that she owns an antiques shop downtown, and that she occasionally does some sort of consulting work for the department. You're not clear on the specifics, and she's not generally very forthcoming. Cute, though.

"Evening, Minerva," she calls lazily down from the balcony. She seems less energetic than usual, but she still manages a grin at you. "How goes it?"

"Nnn," you tell her eloquently.

"Yeah, me too. So who are your friends?" she asks, squinting into the car. You turn around. Beverly is definitely still the only one in the car.

"Friend..........s?" you ask.

"Yeah, the lady in the front and the guy with the ponytail. Don't tell me you don't-" Something seems to dawn on her and she inhales quickly and covers her mouth. "Ah. Never mind, it was just a trick of the light, I guess. Well, I won't keep you, hahahahaha....."

You head upstairs to your apartment. Your building is small, but it's alright. The stairs creak a little, and there's some dust, but you weren't exactly expecting the Ritz when you started renting here. If nothing else, it's better than the dump you found Keyes in. You raise your keys to open the door...

And the door swings open. Suddenly, you're hit with a wave of stale air, and the overwhelming stench of tobacco. You hear something banging around inside. You live alone, you certainly don't smoke, and you locked the door when you left for work. You're reasonably sure of that.

Which means that someone else is in your apartment.

You take a moment to take stock of your options. Your current inventory contains:

*Smartphone (battery drained)
*Pack of bubblegum

*Standard issue service pistol and ammo
*Three hair elastics and five bobby pins
*A small bag containing three tampons and a pad

She knows you're a homicide detective, and she knows he's a ghost, so that makes it pretty clear what he asked you to do, without saying it.

Let's leave out the details of the case for the immediate moment. You're not supposed to share details of ongoing investigations with the public, and even if she does consult with the department sometimes, you don't know the nature of that relationship and what's appropriate for her to know, yet.

If she asks for more information, you'll have the opportunity to reconsider, and we might want to get into the gritty details of murder ghost stuff in a less public discussion?

Not sure how to bring it up, but we might want to ask if this is... what she does for the department, sometimes? Not to pry, but, it might be very important to know how seriously the people you work for take this stuff. It sort of makes the difference between keeping quiet and handling this on your own (can't tell the people above you you're crazy and seeing a ghost) or reporting the supernatural contact (oh, a murder-haunting? Here, fill out form 12-Z and we'll issue you a proton pack).

You guys are still in a pretty public place, dunno how well it would be for unwanted ears to overhear a delicate matter like this. Perhaps you too should arrange a meeting somewhere a bit more private and when she isn't wearing something that keeps distracting your gay brain. Maybe you could even get Elliot to properly introduce himself like a nice ghost would and hopefully that'll speed things up with what must be done.

"...Yeah," you admit as Amelia climbs out of the pool. She reaches for a towel. "There's one thing he wanted. He asked me to, uh. Do my job. Which I was going to do anyway, but I'd rather not have him sticking around until I've finished."

She nods. You can't know for sure, but you think she caught your drift.

"Where is he now?" she asks.

"I don't know," you tell her. "I lost track of him after I got up this morning. Maybe he's fucked off somewhere else-"

"Oh, HEY, roomie!" says Keyes from directly behind you, and you almost fall into the pool. "Who's the gal pal? Is she single? Because I could totally hit that."

Amelia turns bright red and you scowl at him.

"She can hear you," you hiss under your breath, praying that nobody else overhears. "Can you go five minutes without being...fucking terrible?"

"Nope!" he says cheerfully and floats off to make the pool water unbearably cold.

>You guys are still in a pretty public place, dunno how well it would be for unwanted ears to overhear a delicate matter like this.

"They're right," Amelia says, pulling herself together. "We shouldn't talk here, and I have to open the store in twenty minutes. Are you free tonight?"

"They?" you ask.

"Oh. Nobody, I'm sorry. Seriously, can we talk later?"

>"They?"
Oh hey she can hear us. Hello, Amelia!

>"Oh. Nobody, I'm sorry. Seriously, can we talk later?"
There's probably not a ready made quick fix for this kind of thing, and she's already helping you. No need to push her. You can survive one day ignoring him.

"Yeah, okay.

"...Thank you, seriously."

Haha it must be weird to be aware of a group of disembodied voices that are subconsciously controlling someone right in front of you.

I'm not dead! Surprise! Quest should be updating more regularly from now on.

"Yeah, okay," you tell Amelia, and she nods at you. You can't exactly blame her for being busy, and you need to get cracking if you want to get in your workout before you need to be at the station.

"Good," she says, giving you a smile. Your knees feel a little weak.

"...Thank you, seriously," you tell her as she heads for the locker room.

"No problem!" she calls over her shoulder. "See you then?"

"See you then," you reply.

After that, working out all sort of blurs together, and before you know it you've finished. Now that there's no easy way to antagonize you, Keyes seems to mostly leave you alone, so it's just you and your thoughts.

You make a quick pitstop at home to change into your work clothes, and head off to work.

It's still early enough when you leave for work that the streets are relatively empty, filled only with fellow early-risers like you. It isn't until you're about halfway to the station that you begin to get the sinking feeling that you're being followed. You would ordinarily dismiss it as paranoia, but the feeling sticks with you for the next block, and you keep thinking that you see movement out of the corner of your eye.

There's an alley to your right you could turn down, if you wanted to get out of the public eye. There's also a cafe to your left that you can drop into, to discourage any shenanigans. Doing either of these things will take time, and could make you late.

Options:
1. Lose the tail. Duck into the alley.
2. Lose the tail. Duck into the cafe.
3. Keep going. You don't have time to waste.

Head down, talk to yourself. "Keys, if you're still there, and want to do something useful, go snoop on the tail I've picked up. If they're following me, maybe they're related to your death, and getting a good look at them without them knowing I made them will help."

Then 3.

You live in a world where superheros are real and the department may have a psychic on call. Is there policy for what you do when the supernatural intrudes on a case? Would it be reasonable to tell anyone, or should we just pretend everything is normal?

To be honest, you didn't know ghosts were a real thing until last night. There are old wives' tales and urban legends about this sort of thing, but you consider yourself something of a skeptic.

Psychics are easier to explain. Lots of people have powers, not just heroes, of course. Some people have always claimed to be "psychic," but it had always been your opinion that they were overmystifying a perfectly natural phenomenon. With the ability to read minds or see into the past, it wouldn't be hard to pretend to be able to speak to ghosts.

Long story short, no, there's no procedure for "the ghost of this case's victim is haunting my sorry ass." You don't even know if Captain Manikowski would believe you.

Suggestions may now resume.

Wacky theory: you yourself have a power that relates to ghosts somehow, or which produced something resembling a ghost. Make a mental note to narrow the possibilities by checking whether or not the ghost knows anything you couldn't possibly have picked up subconsciously.

Tell the chief that you've finally got Elliot Keys more-or-less cooperating with the investigation. When it is inevitably pointed out that the man is dead, nod and acknowledge, sigh, then say that it's some ridiculous magic bullshit which you'll fully explain in some sort of official report as soon as you figure it out yourself.

Then, order the ghost into an interrogation room and start asking the sort of questions you'd have if he'd somehow survived. What's the last thing he remembers? A glimpse of the attacker is probably too much to hope for, but getting the victim's perspective on known associates and other potential suspects is surely worth something.

Make sure he's manifested in some way the recording equipment can pick up, so you can review the tapes later (and prove you're not just crazy).
