You are a Rudäl, a nomadic people from the frozen marshes of the far north. You were a rambunctious child, always venturing out into the wilds, wondering what was beyond the wastelands that you have called home your entire life. Now, at your coming of age, you were given the choice to live on with your tribe, or to leave and explore the world for yourself. Without almost a second thought, you began to pack your bags, stopping only to say goodbye to your friends and family. After a long, heartfelt goodbye, you leave the only people you have ever known and strike out on your own southward, into the lands deemed forbidden and savage by your elders.

After a long day of travelling, you stop to rest your paws. Even though you have not been traveling long, the air is much warmer here, and the snow has mostly melted, save for patches in the shade beneath the forest trees. You sit down on a milestone and take in your surroundings. To your left, the road leads back north the way you came. To your right, the road leads further south; there is a wooden road post on the right side of the path, but at the distance, it is too hard to make out what the markings say. Even further down the road, there appears to be a path splitting off to the west through the trees and into the forest. You have a rucksack on your back that you take off and set onto the dirt road, resting, and pondering your next move.

Think about how cute you are.

Despair that modern science has failed to measure it.

Take a close look at the post. Wander aimless is fun and all but we need to know about our surroundings to take care of ourselves.

Read the sign, but don't leave your bag on the ground! I guarantee that as soon as you take your eyes off of it, something/someone is gonna steal it!

Who reads road signs anyway. Follow the road south and then take the path to the west into the forest.

You decide that it's best to determine what is nearby, so after having rested, you grab your rucksack and make your way over towards the sign.

While you were versed in foreign languages as a prized student of your village chief, due to your people's nomadic culture and focus on oral tradition, you.... never learned how to read. You assume these these carvings are words, and the arrows point towards their locations. Ahead of you lies the main dirt road leading south and to the destination of the markings on the top of the post. A little ahead, a path turns west into the trees; you think this must be the second set of markings. Behind you lies the path back north and to your village. You still carry your rucksack.

I mean, you don't really have a goal in where you are going *to*, so one way is pretty much just as good as the other right now.

I vote to take the offshoot path.

Also, any major skills/racial traits that might be useful in a pinch?

Not many roadsigns have the most dangerous direction pointing forward, unless there's some kind of big warning sign with lots of sharp symbols to show how dangerous it is, so go forward.

Oh, it's east then? Then east we go. What kind of adventurer would we be if we didn't get sidetracked at every opportunity.

You decide to take the path east through the trees. As the sun begins to set behind the tall forest, you secure your rucksack on your shoulders and start off down the smaller dirt path. Quickly, the night closes in and soon the forest is all around you; it becomes hard to even make out the path. You fear you have become lost, until you begin to see light in the distance. You press on towards the light, and soon find yourself in a moonlit clearing, with a large building standing in the center. The building is large, bigger than any you have ever seen, and its windows glow with a bright light the likes you have never seen before. If you had to guess, you would say this is some type of home, but you have no idea who would live way out here. Maybe it is a place for travelers to rest?

You ponder whether you should approach the building, or turn back and find your way back to the main road. Or perhaps you can think of a better idea?

You decide that this place may not be safe, and it would be best to scout out the area. You hide your heavy pack behind a tree and start skulking around the building. You make your way towards the back, being careful to avoid the the pools of light radiating from the windows. You peek around the back and notice a break in the mounds of earth built up around the building, revealing a small back door. However, before you can investigate further, you hear footsteps about to round the corner of the building. In the split second you have to make a decision, you ponder whether to run for the tree line, or stay to see what it is. Or perhaps there is another option..

You quickly leap into the mound surrounding the building, however you also quickly realize that it is not quite as deep as it looks. Underneath the layer of lush grass was a mound of solid earth that you slam into. You exclaim as you bounce off the hard dirt.
"Well well, what do we have here?" a voice says from behind you. You could hear the smile in the voice, like a predator that had just caught its prey. You pull yourself from the mound. Do you turn and face this new arrival, or do you make a break for the tree line?

"Stop right there," the newcomer says sternly. "Who are ye and what're ye doin' skoolkin' aboot?" The newcomer has her hand on a holster by her side; you have heard of the outlander boomsticks, but never thought you would ever face one, and hope that today would not be that day.
"Well, what is it?" the newcomer asks, quickly losing her patience. Should you try to converse with her? What should you say? Perhaps you should just try and make a run for it, or maybe there is another option..

Well, there's only one thing left to do!

Sit down and start crying.

Tell her that your lost because you can't read the road signs and now your scared because she's going to shoot you and then cook you up and eat you, just like in all the stories everyone in your village was telling you and you don't wanna get eaten! Waaaaah!

Yeah, not all of that is true, but she doesn't need to know that, right?

Say you wanted to find out if the people around were friendly before knocking the door. You wouldn't want to be taken by surprise by someone big threatening you with a gun!

Don't cry, just tell her you're traveling and you took a detour to explore but her house looked a little weird so you were just checking it out. I mean you don't look like a thief do you?

Tell her your name and that you were looking for a place to stay the night.
Tell her you and a friend of yours were traveling when you got attacked and separated. Tell her he may be dead but that you have your hopes up and.. and that she's very pretty and to please not hurt you.

You attempt to explain that you were simply unsure of where you were and that you were making sure the area was safe, but you're knowledge of Common language is rusty, and you stumble over your sentences; what words you do manage correctly are masked by your heavy accent. The newcomer steps closer and puts her arms behind her back; she towers over you at twice your height, but you think that may be less because she's tall and more because you are just short. She does not seem to perceive you as much of a threat. "What d'ye call yourself?" she asks. What is your name?

You hunch down to seem smaller and clasp your claws together, and try your best to conjure up the look that always got you an extra sweet cake during dinner time in your tribe. "My name.... ees Kestrel," you say, trying your best to speak clearly, and trying not to stumble over your words.
"Well, Kestr'l, Ye should nae be slinking aboot out here.... Someone mae think ye be up tae somethin'...." The newcomer eyes you suspiciously. "There are reports of bandits 'round these parts."
Bandits? You remember hearing tales of no gooders who prey on travelers, but you always assumed they were just scary stories to keep children from wandering too far from the tribe.
"It's not safe tae be out here alone, why donnae ye come inside, I'm sure Aloinne has some tea on."
Should you accept her offer and go inside with her, or press on into the woods? It may be rude to leave, however you do not know what is inside. Or perhaps you may want more information before continuing.
