One day, you will be a hero.
One day you will fight giants and lizardmen barabarians and steam-powered monstrosities and liches by yourself and come out triumphant.
One day you will foster alliances with technologically advanced druids and tribes of militaristic ogres.
One day you will fight to defeat the arch-lich Tartarus and win at the cost of your own life.

But today is not that day. Today, you are a village boy playing with your sister Alina and your best friend Nathaniel. Your parents are watching from your cottage as you play in the streets of Tulbyon, the village you've lived in since you were born. In the outside world, there is a war brewing between the Balthazar Empire you reside in and the Tyran Union of murderous elves, but in this little hamlet you are kept sheltered from the world, where your only worries are where you're going to run to when playing hide and seek.

Speaking of which, Nathaniel is most likely reaching the end of his countdown which means you're going to have to find a place to hide, and quick. Where do you go?

>Hide in plain sight - go into the house. Maybe he won't bother looking there?
>Go down the street to the apothecary's cottage, perhaps Auntie Windvale will hide you in one of her cupboards.
>Run as fast as you can as far as you can - he can't find you if not even you know where you're going.

Run out of the village into the nearby tribal encampment and make friends with the other kids. One very excited lizard girl in particular.

2 days late, sheesh. I'm getting too old for this shit.
You run inside your own home, where you live with your mother and younger sister Alina. Your mother, Alara, is the only village seamstress in a town specializing in lumber - her services are in high demand, which means your little family is rather well off.

You search for a hiding place in your large abode. The closets where your mother keeps her sewing supplies? No, those will be the first place Nathaniel checks if he realizes you went inside. The forest in the back? No, mother will be furious if she founds out you went there without her supervision.

Outside, you hear Nathaniel romping up the steps. You whisper some words that your mother would be very angry to hear if she was at home currently. You go to the only hiding place you have available - your mother's bedroom. Diving under the bed, you hit your head on something wooden and hollow. You scrunch up so your limbs are hidden under the bed, even as you stop yourself from crying out. The door opens with a squeal - thank god you closed it behind you - as Nathaniel looks for signs of your presence. Just to be safe, you stop breathing. After a moment, Nathaniel runs out again, and you let out the breath you were holding in a sigh of relief. Crawling carefully, you come out from under the bed and pull out the item you hit your head against.

It's a large box, about as long as you are tall. You try to open it, but soon realize that is locked, and the keyhole is in a peculiar shape, almost like a bird's wing. You could search the room for it, but Nathaniel might come back and your mother most likely wouldn't be happy if she found you snooping through your things - for all you know, this might be one of your missing father's belongings.

>Scavenge through her room looking for the key. If you can find it and open the box before she gets home she'll never find out.
>Leave it for now but ask your mother when she gets home soon.
>Leave the box and don't tell anyone you found it.

Look for the key, but give it to Nathaniel after hide-and-seek. Ask your mother when she gets back. If it's not dangerous, you can get the key back and open it yourself.
