So, in case you weren't aware, we have a wiki. It is a promising wiki, but sparse of content and probably inaccurate considering a large amount of quests aren't on it.

In a vague attempt to promote our beloved yet much ignored wiki, here's the deal. It's already the 6th but the remainder of September is now Wiki Month.

Every day I will keep a tally for every user that makes meaningful edits to the wiki. A meaningful edit is qualified here as two or more sentences of contextually relevant information or adding a relevant image to the page, and to promote more pages getting some info fleshed out than just the standard ones everyone writes up, I will only be counting a page for a quest once. (This should also stop people from going hurr durr I will submit ten paragraphs one block of two sentences at a time.)

The highest scorer at the end of the month gets a free request from each of the artists signing up to the rewards list at the discretion of that particular artist. I can't be held accountable for EVERYONE, I am just one man.

So far, the artists that have signed up to offer rewards are me, Cisqur of Mannyventure fame, and Clockwork Seal of I don't have the list on me fame. If you want to sign up for being on the motivating- er, rewards list, just ask.

Finding this thread (even though I am unlikely to win) motivated me to finally get around to updating the page for Chee Quest, which was about 10 threads behind.
As well as updating characters (there are so many I wasn't able to finish in one go), I added a handy entry to each character profile to keep track of their TERRIBLE SECRETS . (Chee in particular has more world-view-shattering secrets than many mages have spells.)

Making the Category:Quests list huge and ungainly with abandoned noise does not help people find quests anyone cares about. It is a more browsing/search-in-page oriented organization.

If you put dead=1 in the infobox, they will end up on Category:Dead Quests instead, so the full-wiki search can still find them. Or you can list them using words on the author page with a plain old link to the thread, where search will still find them.

>>
No. 17974 ID: ec0bf5

Hey, I'd like to make a suggestion about changing the scoring system somewhat. I feel that the scores not reflecting the amount contributed to each article to be kind of a broken scoring mechanic, because it means that if I just post a tiny three sentence thing to make a stub slightly less stubbish it counts just as much as somebody who spends hours writing out ten thousand characters worth of stuff to completely flesh out a quest article. It's kind of unfair to the other people that I got most of my points making stubs, and it's equally unfair to me that somebody else has started exploiting the system, whether by accident or intent I don't know, by adding images to every single stub in alphabetical order.

My proposal is this: modify the score so it measures the amount of characters added to the page to reflect the effort put into the edit, maybe with a small bonus for images reflecting the minimal but nonzero effort that takes. http://tgchan.org/wiki/Special:RecentChanges has a built in counter of how many characters were changed, which will make doing this not kill the judges.

I already spoke with Cirr about this, and he said that it was worth posting this to see what the other participants think, because right now the contest seems to reward brute forcing articles instead of actual contributive effort. What do you guys think?
>>
No. 17975 ID: 2563d4

>>17974
The problem with that is that it's just a size difference, not an absolute string distance, like Levenshtein. Removals are negative and changes are zero!
>>
No. 17976 ID: 2563d4

...although having just seen Recent Changes, I am in favour of anything that stops people trying to touch as many articles as possible to score points for this bloody thing.

Seriously. At least bother to set the categories correctly if you're going to do that.

Sorry guys, in my updating spree the other night, I guess fucked up with some stuff. I formally apologize and I'll be sure to do things correctly from now on. I'll start cleaning up after myself as soon as I have a few hours free.

Also, I don't want to appear that I'm doing all of that stuff JUST for the reward. Honestly, I'm not at all sure what I'd do with a free request from all those artists. I'm trying to be genuinely helpful, I promise! ohgodpleasedonthateme.

What is a "dead quest"? It seems completely arbitrary what is determined to be a dead quest or not, even though the description of the category is "Quests decomposing in the /graveyard/ board." LionsPhil removed http://tgchan.org/wiki/Alex_Quest from Dead Quests even though it has been in the graveyard for two years.
>>
No. 17986 ID: 3bd8ec

>>17985
I am really not sure what metric LionsPhil is using for this (I suspect it is just on memory). While A Flower is definitely alive, Alchemist Quest hasn't updated in about four months, Ant Quest hasn't since January of 2010, and the aforementioned Alex Quest has not seen an update since shortly after the wiki itself was founded.
>>
No. 17987 ID: 19fe81

If I remember right Lionsphils’ definition of a dead quest is along the lines of,

“any quest whose threads are solely in the graveyard”
>>
No. 17989 ID: 3bd8ec

>>17987
You're right.

That's not the most intuitive definition of "dead quests" (mostly because something like Alex Quest would be just considered "on hiatus"; it seems more in keeping with the idea of "stillborn quests" that I can't really remember if we ever actually started using?) but whatever categories fixed now.

No. 17992 ID: 2563d4

Well, it's the one we agreed on in the wiki thread when discussing it ( >>9946 ), because people get worried about subjectivity and this pushes all that messy business over to recycling the calls of the mods. '\o/`

It's also documented on Help:Contents and Template:Infobox. Perhaps not Category:Dead Quests itself, though, come to think of it.

That said there's supposed to be some wiggle room so if a quest never really got going but managed to get a stubby thread into the archive anyway it can be "dead"ed. Perhaps put a <!-- comment --> to that effect by the dead=1 line so that it's clear its a deliberate exceptional case.

Also also, I'm pretty sure our terminology is intended to be that "Dead" = "Never got enough going to be worth reading", which is why we shun them from showing up in the Cat:Quests lists; "Stopped updating" would be somewhat euphemistically called "On Haitus". We can make a "might return"/"never will" distinction on that if you want, but it seems like pure subjectivity to me. (Also the probability of anyone ever switching e.g. Nan between "running" and "might return" seems, uh, somewhat low.) tl;dr if we really want fine-grained liveliness categeorisation it probably needs to be something that interfaces with the board.

Oh, right, just noticed this post.

Don't sweat it too much. It's just kind of irritating, like coming home to find a well-meaning person has done the washing...mixed together on the wrong settings, so half of it needs to be re-done, and you're going to have to try to get the pink out of that white shirt. Certainly don't let put you off editing or anything, just maybe before doing a "right, going to do X to all these pages" tell Dylan or Typo or me in case it could be done better.

(For one thing I think Dylan plans to clean up board/wiki duplicate images with scripting, and we're looking at Infoboxes picking up quest OP images automatically.)
>>
No. 18007 ID: 9dd68b

>>17995
Okay, that makes me feel better. I'll be sure to get whatever I plan to do cleared here first.

The script doesn't seem like that good of an idea, though. Take Genesis, for example. The OP was a black image and stuff like that would make for a rather uninformitave infobox.
>>
No. 18010 ID: b6edd6

>>18007
Maybe it could pick up the OP after checking if the image-box is nonexistent or empty? That way it would be default but changeable.

It would still be possible to override the image manually, and that includes keeping all current infobox images (until/unless someone looks at them and switches them over to automatic).

There's been a few changes to the scoring metric, so everything is different aaaa

1st. Asplosionz - 26
2nd. Spook - 22
3rd. Trout - 19
4th. Dasaki - 4
5th. Overlord - 3
5th. EveryZig - 3
5th. Typo - 3
8th. Larro - 2
8th. Shiitake - 2

One Hit Wonders (there's still a chance maybe):
Asdfzxc920, ArsonCat, MrTTAO, Lash2828, What, DoubleHope, Psithief, Grail, Lizqur

Changes to scoring metric:
- Only adding images does not count as a point to avoid masses of points for pressing a button a few times (sorry, Trout)
- Minor edits not counted (they're minor, and if you flagged your edit as minor when it wasn't, well, why did you flag it as minor D:)

If you disagree with the changes to the metric, I can easily change it and count up the points again, so let me know before it's too late! THERE IS NOT MUCH TIME LEFT

Artists offering rewards (at their discretion):
Cirr, Cisqur, Seal, Gnome, Ñ, Lucid, What, LonelyWorld, Incompatible, BiteQuest

No. 18148 ID: 3fd4fb

I stole a march up to what I think is third place, but Asplosionz is a machine. Looks like the prize is his, and I'm not going to fight Spook further for second, either.

Hopefully my contributions to the wiki are appreciated nonetheless. My participation in this event- even if it only started a couple days ago- has been rather enlightening as to the sad state that the wiki is in; many quests are missing and even more, including some of the best, have woefully uninformative pages that are virtually useless as anything other than links to the threads. Unfortunately, doing a thorough job of improving them is a massive undertaking. Even the better contributions that I made often felt woefully inadequate in spite of the fact that they took hours of effort.

I have no idea how this problem could really be corrected. Consistently updating the wiki is a thankless task, and to be honest I can usually only convince myself to do it when there is some reward involved- usually, that comes in the form of being able to use the wiki page as a reference in an ongoing quest; I put a lot of effort into the Tiffany page a while back trying to create a viable reference for the rune system, and during this contest I filled the EDF character summaries with links to their appearances for rereading purposes. I tried to keep the Guns for Hire page up to date at one point as well, but after all the character images got torn out that pretty much demotivated me there. Anyway, point is that while this event was fun and hopefully made a significant improvement to the wiki, unless updating it becomes habitual for people it's likely that it will remain hit-or-miss in its usefulness.

I'm rambling. Good idea for an event, wish I'd noticed its existence weeks ago, and congratulations to those who did more to contribute than I did.

>Consistently updating the wiki is a thankless task, and to be honest I can usually only convince myself to do it when there is some reward involved- usually, that comes in the form of being able to use the wiki page as a reference in an ongoing quest
This is, frankly, fine. If a quest doesn't have fans who are eager enough to update its wiki page, then what is the point of expending effort on maintaining one beyond "here are all the threads in a nice list"? Who would read it? Wikis are self-solving like that.

Okay, here are the final scores. Due to various factors and arguments over timezones, part of the edits for the 1st of October were included. Unlike the other scores, these ones matter and I expect to hear some objections after the totals (unless it's universally agreed they seem okay).

1st. Asplosionz - 50
2nd. Spook - 25
3rd. Ironybot - 22
4th. Trout - 20
5th. EveryZig - 4
5th. Dasaki - 4
5th. Typo - 4
8th. Shiitake - 3
9th. Larro - 2
9th. DoubleHope - 2
9th. Grail - 2
9th. Lizqur - 2

One-pointers:
Asdfzxc90, ArsonCat, MrTTAO, Lash2828, What, Psithief, Sconna, DoubleU, Rand

The winner is Asplosionz! Congratulations! You win ALL OF THE ART. Artists who specifically stated on signing up that they'd award people in positions other than first, however, should still award as they said. So really the winner gets MOST OF THE ART, but.

Of course, the real winner in this contest is the wiki, which has been bolstered by the new articles for quests. Since the contest was declared, it has been made a lot more up to date than it began. My sincerest thanks goes to all of you who made the wiki better, whether it was during this month or ever at all. One constructive edit is always better than none.

Thank you all, artists for motivating and entrants for editing alike! This is perhaps not the end of wiki month forever, but it is the end for now. See you next time!

THE ARTISTS AND CONTACT

As a reminder, here's the artists who pledged their efforts for the sake of the wiki:
Cirr, Cisqur, Seal, Gnome, Ñ, Lucid, What, LonelyWorld, Incompatible, BiteQuest, Typo

I unfortunately don't have exact contact details for all of these artists, but most of them can be found on IRC on irc.rizon.net around #tgchan and #rubyquest (and if this means nothing to you, send me a message on the wiki, the name's Cirr there too).
