hmm, disregard that then. It would seem that I suck cocks.

Nevertheless, the point regarding IDs stands.

The reason /meep/ has IDs is because it was a trial board. We wanted to see how it would affect people's posting. So, feel free to argue for or against keeping IDs in this thread.

You don't need to worry about being castigated for your opinion either way - we haven't reached a solid decision about this yet.

I haven't seen as much random spamming as I was expecting. Admittedly, this may be because of IDs. I'd say that if there's enough of a call for lack of IDs (I've seen 2-3 separate people discussing it now), give it a try without IDs and see how it goes.

Take away the IDs. They're stupid on a general discussion board.

I have to say I much prefer the IDs because the main argument about being able to be anonymous is not being held accountable, or not wanting to have definite responsibility for things said or done.

People want to say stuff and it not be known that they said them.

This sounds like a problem waiting to happen to me because it's almost encouraging people to say things about each other in a vehement manner. People want to get away with shit, but we didn’t open up /meep/ for people to behave like they are on /b/. We want to stay very clear away from /b/havior.

Talking or posting about things not /quest/ or /tg/ related in basis provides a lot of freedom as it is, and there are naturally some who didn’t even want a general board in the first place. I think the heart of the matter is that you should enjoy it, accept the IDs as you have with the other boards, and possibly prove that you can be responsible before expecting complete anonymity.

Not to sound like a skeptic, or a fatalist but judging by the behavior on boards currently with IDs, people still have no problem acting out. I don’t see any benefit in making it easier to accomplish.

>main argument about being able to be anonymous is not being held accountable,
That's the main argument against being anonymous. However, since we have mods and admins who are actually active, people are held accountable anyway. The main argument for anonymity is the fact that when no name is attached to a post, the post stands own its own merit. People can't make judgments on an idea based on how they feel about its author.

Also: /meep/ is general. /b/ is, traditionally, general. Or random, which works out to the same thing. We don't want to be like 4chan/b/, obviously, but I have no real objections to /meep/ being like a proper /b/.

>people still have no problem acting out.
I have not noticed anyone "acting out". The only thing I can think of is massive amounts of discussion in AfterQuest, and while that's against the rules, it's hardly a deliberate offense. Somebody posts their feelings and suggestion, somebody else posts their thoughts on the other post, the first poster replies, and bam, it's a discussion. Hardly something to criticize too harshly.

What merit?

People already use proxies to do the same thing anyway. I guess the only difference is that nobody would have to make an effort to do it.

>However, since we have mods and admins who are actually active, people are held accountable anyway.
Although mostly true, the opposing view on the matter is that it would create a considerable amount more work for the moderators we do have.

> I have not noticed anyone "acting out".
I have quite often. These posts get deleted and/or banned so nobody else has to bother with them.

>being like a proper /b/.
This concept is confusing and creates a black hole in the universe.

On the whole I submit to the decision. I will support the movement for an IDless /meep/ but if it starts creating way too many problems, I will fight against it in a heartbeat.

>What merit?
Whatever merit resides in any given post. In some cases (has anyone ever been as far as decided, etc) that merit will be virtual non-existent. On the other had, some posts are very sophisticated and frame complicated ideas. I recommend you peek into the Unified Setting on our /tg/ for a fair few examples of this.

>People already use proxies to do the same thing anyway. I guess the only difference is that nobody would have to make an effort to do it.
Except that that's not really the point. Certainly if a person wanted to escape a reputation as a douche, he could change his ID. The negative aspect that you see remains. But if a person keeps there name, they can build up a reputation. A smart person builds up a good reputation, so even stupid ideas are lent some credence. A less frequently insightful person might build up a bad reputation, and even his occasional good ideas would be ignored
Thus the benefit is lost.

>Although mostly true, the opposing view on the matter is that it would create a considerable amount more work for the moderators we do have.
Considering the community, I doubt that there will be significant issue. Both because the community is small compared to how many mods there are, and just because people tend to cause problems extremely infrequently.

>I have quite often. These posts get deleted and/or banned so nobody else has to bother with them.
While I accept the idea that there may be a significant quantity of deleted posts which I never see, even those I do see are not often particularly bad, and the infrequency with which I do see them leads me to believe that the actual rate is quite infrequent as well.

>>being like a proper /b/.

Why, what other chans do you hang on? 420chan is pretty cool usually. 711chan too, though they have a lot of unusual memes. Their Sean is a fairly good counterpoint to our Bob.

erm, apologies for the unnecessary doublepost. My intent was merely to modify my post, whowever it would appear that somehow the passowrd being entered automatically is not what I thought it was, and I am left unable to delete the superfluous post. My bad.

It's all good. But I would like to point out that if you only know 4chan's /b/, yo don't really have much of a grasp of how /b/ boards work. Small chans are markedly different than larger ones.

I'd like to see what an IDless /meep/ looks like. It's not like it's an irrevocable change or anything - at worst you have a couple days of crappy posts. At best you have a functional anonymous discussion board, which we are lacking at the moment.

NO U R RONG

I would suggest reading some of the posts in this thread. Anonimity has a point. There are reasons why it might be considered more trouble than it's worth, but saying it's pointless is honestly a laughable claim.
