All glory to the Serrate Hive!

Quest will feature NSFW elements but will not focus on them. Probably. Probably just nude aliens.
No one under 18, please don't sue me, I can't afford a lawyer right now, my rent, she is ever a demanding mistress, etc.

Well! Looks like it's the end of the line for ol' whatever my name is. Didn't even get to remember my name after that mysterious bout of amnesia I had at some point, uh, ago.
Look, I can't remember when it started either, that's sort of the whole problem. Just blank. And I bet these guys are responsible somehow.

I wish I could say I didn't see this coming but that'd be a cruel irony or something like it. I'm a powerful psychic and precognition is ostensibly in my repetoire but right now all I'm seeing is, at best, me being tied up, and, at worst, being cut into and being opened up to varying degrees. See precognition is actually garbage because it turns out the future isn't deterministic which I'm sure would thrill some people but it's a huge pain in the secondary abdomen for me.

I'm supposed to be a commander. I'm supposed to think of solutions.
Well then...

--- Possible Approaches ---

A - Wiggle antennae to dislodge psychic damp--
Nope they're stuck on there real good never mind.

A - Attempt to struggle out of bonds by raw force alone. (RISKY: 70% SUCCESS CHANCE)
I emerged from my last pupation with mostly enough muscle to make sure I don't get too left behind and not much extra, but maybe if I can find a weakness...

B - Attempt to overload psychic dampening devices clamped to antennae.
I don't think these aliens really understand what I am. For starters, they think my antennae are the focus of my psychic will. This is about as relevant as if they'd shoved it in my mouth, but they are still dampening me by contact. I mean, they do glow when I do, uh, psychic things, but so do my eyes and they didn't try to clip anything to those.
Course, the downside is they'll get a chance to react before I can do anything.

C - Attempt to convince captors to release me using non-verbal communication. (RISKY: 70% SUCCESS CHANCE)
I can probably just about whisper into one of the guards' minds with these limiters on me. They're probably going to immediately assume it's me though. I mean, they're in a secure room with a known psychic threat, they'd have to be preeetty dumb to fall for it.

X - Resign self to fate and await the end
No. No! No why am I even including this on the list?!! ...That one's for later after I use up the rest!

Z - Something else (write in)

C.
B seems like to get you shot pretty quick, same for A, but at least with C, you have plausible deniability and their own paranoia to work against them, ie a hallucination. Plus, at least one of them seems pretty dumb, so turning them against each other might be possible.

You ever consider you might have wiped your own memory, for the safety of someone/thing else? Someone powerful enough to wipe your memory would've probably just killed you then.

B: Maybe if you break it, they won't notice anything is wrong immediately.

Also Z: After breaking it maybe see what other powers you have. Can you mind control your captor or something? Get him to act like nothing's wrong?

Any physical alteration abilities?

> physical alteration abilities
My kind have a relatively flexible biology that can pull off some borderline impossible things, but unfortunately I'm specialised too much.
I strike a balance between powerful psychic abilities with a form that's adaptable for a wide variety of situations but excels at none of them.
I think I considered going deeper into psionic strength but I still wanted to be able to, I dunno, walk, move over slightly difficult terrain, hold things, see, hear, smell, there were a lot of downsides to specialising too far, and I'm not gonna lie, a good chunk of the reason I went with this body ultimately was a matter of diplomacy that was working until just recently, I think.

> mind control abilities
You know it's weird, I know I have those, but they don't really work on the unwilling, as far as I seem to recall. Or instinctually know. The two are sort of blurring together at this point.

> may have wiped your own memory
I feel like exercising powerful psychic abilities on your own mind is a surefire route to disaster.
...so I'm not ruling that possibility out, but, if that's true, I'm extremely disappointed in previous me.

> how do you know you're a commander
How do I know I have legs and arms? How do I know I have antennae? How do I know I have eyes and a mouth?
Some things are just integral and can't be taken away through something like amnesia. That or it's not entirely consistent what I forgot and what I kept, but, no, no, something tells me that this is a role I was literally born to have.

C - Attempt to convince captors to release me using non-verbal communication.
SUCCESS

Okay so one of these guards is clearly a better target than the other. I'm glad that the involuntary glow of my psionic channelling only really starts happening when I put in extreme effort, otherwise this would look very suspicious.

Hm. How to approach this. I can't just tell the guy to leave, there's another guard here. Confuse them into thinking a greater threat is on the horizon? No, that'll just make them even more alert and possibly get me moved into something more secure like an enclosed box or something. Convince them someone else is coming to move me elsewhere? No, they'll just stick around and watch me until the escorts come. They've been pretty insistent about at least one pair of eyes being on me the entire time.

~this is your conscience speaking. let the bug go free. you know they didn't do anything wrong.~

The guard closest to me looks at me as their six ears flatten out and raise up, and then slowly settle as they look at me.
My plan is to start getting the guy to question his mental faculties--

"Why are we keeping this, uh, subject here anyway? Looks kinda harmless to me?"
Oh. That worked. ...that worked??

"Dunra, give me strength. You were briefed on the enemy before we hit planetside, right? Extremely terrifying, highly adaptable bug things, cordoning off a criai colony and holding it hostage? Controlling the minds of the criai they captured to use for food and whatever other nefarious purposes they had in mind for those weak defenseless lazmihi pacifists and those nantuha primi--"
"Hey man knock that off, the nantuha aren't primitive, they just have a different way of life!"

Oh this is going better than I thought. I wish I could crane my head far enough to see them.

"You're right. It's the height of sophistication and elegance to go wandering around the frozen wastes like some washed up vagrant, except by choice."
"My dad was nantuha, you asshole!!"
"Oh. I couldn't tell through the armour," says the other guard, hesitating. I hear something plastic clacking as it's moved from a location. "Command, this is Highsec, we've got a 27, requesting personnel refresh."
"A 27?! I just asked a fucking question!! You racist fuckwad!!"
"I'm just looking out for the interests of the bisushpi-kin. Can't be risking operational security, you see. You seem a little emotionally unfit for the task of guarding such a sensitive secret, I'm doing you a favour getting you reassigned. Plus this is going to look great at my next review."
"Your next review, huh. Your next review."

"What the FUCK did you just DO?! Halt! Stay on that fucking table if you know what's good for you!"

Yeah, they have guns and I don't, so I'm not moving now the attention's back on me.

"No, no, run, by all means, make a big scene, make a big fucking deal out of this!!"
"Are you actually fucking braindead?! Do you have any fucking idea how much effort we went to locking that thing down in the first place?! YOU WERE THERE, YOU MORON!"
"Yes! Yes I know exactly how much effort it took! And I know how much effort it's gonna take to do it again! And they're going to ask questions about how this happened, and I'll already be in interrogation for insubordination anyway thanks to your little fucking power play, and you're going to have a lot to answer for, huh? About how you failed to keep the subject detained despite already having reported me?"
"You stupid fucking southlander, do you have any idea--"

WHUMP

okay so the good news is I'm still alive

Pick myself up off the floor. I appear to have rolled right into another room. Also, I figured out what's causing the mist down here. This place is freezing. I should be good for another couple hours but too much longer in this temperature and I'll hit torpor hard.

I'm picking up on a conscious mind that, let's see, surface emotional reading, very bored, slightly annoyed, slightly upset, very frustrated, seems to me to be the profile of a prisoner. I could do with allies but I have no idea who or what they are.

Oh, they saw me first. Wow, that is a lot of fluff. Also a surprising lack of restraints. Why haven't they just... walked out the door? Odd. They don't seem to want to be here.

Hm. Well, they saw me first, and I can tell they saw me, but they haven't said much of anything. Surface readings give me, uh, mild surprise, but also mostly confusion. Not fear. That's a distinct absence. No fear that wasn't already there before I showed up. Not at all like the guards.

--- Possible Approaches ---

A - Attempt to communicate with unidentified individual via verbal communication
I should have no problems speaking the language these people use. It might be a little strongly accented from lack of practice, but I should be intelligible, I hope.

B - Attempt to communicate with unidentified individual via non-verbal communication
I think even with the dampeners on I should be able to use a mixture of whisper-telepathy and body language to talk to anything.

C - Ignore unidentified individual, break off the dampeners ASAP
I should probably get moving instead of trying to strike up a conversation with an unknown quantity. Could be a liability.

Dumbasses didn't even keep the door locked, lol.
Well, they would have had to release you at some point to eat or use the toilet. Or your equivalent thereof.
Either way, guards have probably been alerted, so my guess is your best shot is to start a riot and escape in the confusion. Maybe this extra fuzzy guy will help or at least make a good meatshield. Use psi, it's quieter, probably faster, and less likely to be misunderstood.

So this is not a lazmihi base. Yet it's named after nopa. Guess they had a lot of respect for the combat prowess. Probably bishupi, though given that they seem at least nominally protective of the lazmihi, it could be some other criai faction. > light up a smoko and offer them your light
I have pretty sensitive lungs and also I'm out of lights. And anything smokable.

> insurrection
> your own sympathies
> eat them
Okay so. This sure is provoking an emotional response, and that response is white-hot rage. I can assure you, no matter what those guards said, that I am not here to eat people. I'm gonna hold onto that train of anger for a bit and see if I can dig up the memory it's connected to, because it feels like I've not just been insulted but I've been accused of intentionally failing my mission by striving to disobey it to the fullest, and I do not remember being disloyal. Yeah, yeah, I know, my ability to remember things is slightly suspect at present, but I feel hungry and I don't feel like eating someone looking me in the eyes, so there's that.

> does he know you
He doesn't recognise me, but he recognises something about me. I think. Surface readings are incredibly vague and wishy washy. Half the time it feels like I'm cold reading people, honestly, and just picking up on body language and attributing it to my psychic powers, but I'm never going to say that thought out loud around anyone.
The psychic powers help a little bit, at least.

> hug?
...wow I just felt a powerful conflicting surge of emotion just now. The desire is there, strongly, along with a strong counter-response to not get too close to the... huh. Can't think of the word. I'll unpack that when I'm not in mortal peril.

TIE

Yeah I guess I can't see any problem with trying to do two things at once. I start trying to pull the dampeners off my antennae as best as I can while I talk.

"Hi. Despite my abrupt introduction I'm not a threat."
He just nods once, slowly. I am pretty confident it's a he, for several sensory reasons. Largely chemical. I guess I'm familiar with this species on a pheremone level that my subconscious can recall as my conscious blunders around in a daze. I also note he's like a head taller than me, which mostly irritates me because I prefer not to be looking up at people I don't already have a good sense of trust with. A commander should always be looking down at the situation, at their troops, and getting the complete picture. I feel like a worm. ...Stow it, me, focus. Focus.
"Actually I feel like we might -- ngggh -- have mutually compatible goals." Wow, these things are stuck on there good. They won't go up or down and I'm reluctant to pull too hard because these things are sensitive. My antennae, not the devi-- you probably know I meant that but I feel compelled to clarify, okay?? Good communication is important!!

He looks at me and tilts his head a little.
"I mean we both want -- hrrrggg -- out of here, right? HRRGG!!"
He looks at me, keeps looking at me, looks at me hunched over trying to pull these damn bead-donut things off my antennae, and looks off to the side.
"Look -- aauuuggghh -- I just think -- ggnnnhh -- we should -- fucking fuck -- work togethhhhhher oh come on what is going on with these fucking things?!"
He stares at me blankly.

"Yes."
Oh he is willing to talk. Good. "Yes we should work together, or yes we both want out of here, or what?"
"...Yes."
"Yes to what? Which one?"
"All."
"Okay, that's great! HRRGGHH!!" WHAT ARE THESE THINGS MADE OF.
"...Bad?"
"What?"

He points to the things I'm struggling to get off.

"Yeah they're bad. They're stuck on real tight."
"Close."
"Huh?"
"Head." He points at my head and waves me towards him.
"You want my head closer?"
"Yes."

I walk closer and he slowly reaches up and grabs my antennae, a lot more delicately than I was dreading, and I shiver violently from the contact. Autonomic reaction, I'm hardwired not to let anyone get too close to such a prominent weak point. I sure am quick to trust this guy efor how little I know about him, but I guess being able to read violent intent ahead of time helps.

"Kulupu olin pi ilo," he says, looking at them more closely. "Yes. Knowing, yes. Open, yes."
He takes one of my antennae in one hand and starts squeezing at the dampener clamped to it in points I can't easily see, his hand and arm fluff is getting in the way.
I hear a click and it comes away, neatly opened along a barely visible hinge.
Before I even ask, he does the same for the other. The two clatter to the ground.

"Kulu what now?" I should thank him but I need more intel.
"Yes. Lazmihi."
"Lazmihi??" I feel like I recognise that word but I'm not sure from where. Didn't one of the guards say it? No, it feels like I should know it from a long time ago. Augh, confound this damned patchy memory funk!!
"Others. Good."
"Is that the name of your people? Tribe? Faction? Movement?"
"No." He points to himself. "Kulupu ma lete. Others' name, nantuha."
"Oh. Okay, neat." Focus on the mission.
"Name. Mun," he says, pointing at himself. "You?"
"You're called moon?"
"Yes." He pauses, and frowns a little. "Many meanings. My tongue." He really, really seems to dislike speaking this language, for some reason.
"I can't say I recognise your tongue, but what does mun mean?"
"Moons. Stars. Sky at night. Lights in dark. Mun."
"Oh, I see."
"My tongue. Many things. One word. Good. This tongue. Many words. One thing. Bad."
"I guess I never thought of it that way," I say. "But, uh, we should go."
"Yes. Leaving, now." I guess he can tell by my fidgeting I want out of here.
"Any good way out?"

He counts on his fingers slowly, eyes off and up to the ceiling, and his tails twitch as he mumbles something that isn't actually voiced.

"Low four," he says, after he stops whisper-mumbling to himself. "Low five, door. Through. Tunnel. Tunnel, away."
"What?"
"Anpa anpa mi li jo lupa tawa ete. Tomo ni li pali nena. Mi wile kama anpa."
"...I, uh, yes?"
He sighs, shakes his head, and starts walking. "Come."

I follow, not having much else of an idea.

It's much, much colder outside that room. I know for a fact this body was made to be pretty cold resistant, I have quite the intricate lattice under my surface, so this must be some excessive cold. Even Mun seems taken aback, and I doubt he's someone who's, say, used to the tropics, based on his appearance. It's so cold that it's hard to see, a fog enveloping everything. Even my psychic senses are blinded from thermal shock, but they'll quickly recover. Or I'll freeze to death. One of the two.

"Many, many cold," he says, before his eyes widen and his ears rise up. "Bird people. Danger."
He tugs me behind a stack of crates. Never have I been so thankful for poor organisation.
Our conversation drops to whispers. I keep my hand on him so I have an easier time reading him.
By the dimly-remembered presence-I-can't-quite-recall, Mun is so soft. And warm. No. Focus. Focus on anything other than his incredibly soft and voluminous fur. Plan making a blanket out of him in some non-destructive way later. It is taking half my willpower not to snuggle up against him inappropriately.
"Bird people?"
"Bishupi. Bishushpi. Bishuspi. ...bird people."
"Why "bird people", though? Can they fly?"
He shrugs. "Came from sky. Yes?"
"I take it they aren't friends."

He doesn't say anything, but I see him clench his fists.

"Why did they have you captive, anyway?"
"Not know. Bird people bad." He pauses, looking like he's searching for words, and gives up. "Many, many bad."
"Even towards their own kind?"
"Bird people? Think kulupu ma lete same?" He shakes his head bitterly. "Think kulupu olin pi ilo bad. Think kulupu ma lete many bad. Bird people want all people, bird people. No other."
"Imperialists, I take it."
He nods. "Yes."
"You're familiar with the word imperialists??"
He just looks at me, and frowns. "Yes? Bird people? Right here??"
"Sorry, I'm just having a hard time figuring out how much of this tongue you know."
"More than want."
"Not a fan of learning more languages?"
"Learn is choice. Not learn. Attack."
"Fair enough. And you want to attack in return, right?"
"No. No attack bird people. Defend. Defend my people." He glares at me. "Defend. Like kulupu akesi pipi."
"Like what?"
"Serrate. Hive."
"Serrate hive? What's that?" Sounds like a very ill-advised construction project.

He pauses, and looks at me in what I can tell is a spike of frustration like he can't believe I'm playing this dumb, before it slowly, slowly thaws first to realisation, and then a large flood of sympathy.

"You. Serrate. You..." He pauses. "Serrate defend. Defend kulupu olin pi ilo. Defend kulupu ma lete. Not have knowing?"
"I can't say I remember defending anything."
"Oh."

"...Bird people many, many, many bad," he says, looking at me sympathetically.
"I'm sure," I say, feeling oddly dizzy. I can't quite process this very very significant revelation. It feels so distant.
Mun gestures for me to get against the wall while I look a little dazed.
"Hunter. Good," he says, pointing to himself. "Patient. One good time. We wait."
"You strike me as a little, uh, resource-rich to be a hunter," I say, trying my best to be diplomatic.
"Good hunter," he says, with a swell of pride.

A lull in the patrols gives us a window of opportunity to act.
"Just one soldier," I say, and flick an antenna in the direction I can sense them coming from. "Seems distracted." Can't get more info than that without taking more than a second or two. "This is our chance."

Mun holds up a hand to signal me to stay where I am. Any ambiguity about the gesture, I have resolved with a passive reading. It means stay here.
I'm being given an order? Me? Me?? That's not how this works-- ugh.

--- Possible Approaches ---

A - Let Mun lead
He seems to have an idea or a plan, but I can't figure out what the hell it is and I hope I'm not being dragged along as a sacrifice.
I'm not reading any intention to betray, but I also can't just glean complex intentions like that until they're basically already happening.

B - Lead the charge, fling the guard over the railing and run
I could, with my psychic forces unleashed, easily take care of a single guard. A telekinetic impulse, a scrambling of the senses, I can't force him to do things against his judgement but I can definitely screw with his perception.
It's only natural I take the lead, but it's a little unorthodox for me to directly endanger myself. Still, Mun would make a fine recruit ally and I should probably introduce him to the idea of me taking control before I end up relegated to lackey.

C - Stay put, expand psychic awareness, deep read the minds of all involved
This will absolutely take time and focus. This will sacrifice the current window of opportunity, for definite, but it could lead to finding more. Plus, I have to admit, I'm aching to stretch my psychic might after it spent so long repressed.
Mun will probably not be too happy with me wasting this moment, or maybe he'll just wait for the next one. I don't know how he thinks, not to that detail yet.

You might be a commander, but there are several types of commanders. Tactical, operational, and strategic to be precise. No idea which of those you are. However, all of those listen to the people below them, especially if they have a greater understanding of the situation, and given your amnesia, this guy definitely has a better understanding of the situation.

Also, despite his poor communication skills (one word, many meanings is not good, it just creates ambiguity, which leads to miscommunications, confusion, and possibly conflicts), he's given us some idea of what's going on. While I'm not sure if fuzz-face here is lazmihi or nantuha, he's obviously one of the two. For whatever reason, Serrate hive, of which you are a member, protected them. The bisushpi attempted to exert dominance over them in some fashion, likely military. Serrate aided in their defense. In the process, you were captured. To justify their actions, the bisushpi fabricated a tale that Serrate hive was committing crimes against humani- uh... crimes against all criai. Far easier for the public to support that sort of thing, and it may also be why the guard with the nantuha dad was so easily swayed. He might have heard of Serrate Hive from his relatives, and knew they would not do the things the bisushpi said they would. Also, your amnesia may be by choice, so that Serrate Hive's military secrets would not fall into enemy hands. Mind you, a good portion of this is inferred speculation, but it fits the evidence we have.

Considering the situation, probably better to learn about Mun's capabilities and ensure his plan, offensive or defensive, goes well. You can sort out hierarchy better when you're less likely to get caught.
On that note, you may be a commander, but what does that mean? How well do you know how to lead at this point? Could you lead a small but elite unit personally, or a vast force from a distance? You've implied you're not traditionally a combatant.

Also, interesting that the thought of a hug produces such a reaction. Perhaps it's self preservation?
The cold might be an intentional defensive design, to contain or eliminate escapees via exposure. Freezing to death would suck if you do manage to escape.

He’s warm and you’re cold. It’s only natural that you want to snuggle against him to stay warm! But maybe save it for after you guys get somewhere safe, then you can snuggle with him.

I’m surprised he took that as a compliment. Consider yourself lucky that he didn’t just slap you for calling him fat.

> cold intentional design
It has to be intentional, you don't accidentally make a place this cold. Maybe it's defensive? Unsure.

> not order, just caution
Yeah that's a good point. Great. I get to rediscover my insecurities before anything useful. Problems with others taking control, problems with people being taller than me. How splendid. Thanks, brain.

> deliberate misinformation against the serrate hive
That's sounding like the case. Those fuckers. I get the impression this is something we deal with as a species a lot.
Honestly, have a different enough mouth and suddenly your entire species eats babies on the regular or something.

...speaking of, have you seen criai teeth? I feel like they could chew through metal if they had a bit more jaw strength, I'm surprised they don't bite their own tongues off.
Oh, right, criai. That's right. I remember now. Mun is a criai, and so are the guards, based on morphological similarity. They're, uh, cold-adapted mammals, yes, six ears, good hearing, very emotive in their ear movements, apparently see a smaller range of colours than the known mean, can't see very well in the dark, prone to overheating in temperatures most of my kind would consider comfortable, hence our need to adapt ourselves, because... because coexistence was very important, I do not remember why, coexistence very important. Because we had to be better. Better than what? This is hurting my head, whatever, moving on.

I was taught all this before I was even born, information streaming into my larval brain through... something. Very important to know what a criai is. Mission critical.
Mission critical, criai, Mun talked about my kind defending criai. My mission definitely involved defending criai. Why do we care so much about an alien species? I mean, we're not incompassionate, but why do we care so much about some random aliens? Were they vulnerable?

No. Not vulnerable. I look at Mun's face as he prepares himself and I do not see a helpless creature. I see something that carries that same spark of brutal nature shared by any apex predator. Muscles tense beneath a misleading fat layer. Conscious restraint buckling before righteous vengeance, itself a layer on top of a primal impulse -- this is my home, this is my territory, this is mine and you are not welcome here.
That impulse to remove the harmful Other. The calm before an abrupt, violent storm. I shiver witnessing it, beautiful and terrifying.

But when I think more about criai and I look at Mun, I just find myself feeling deeply sad for some reason. What happened that could have caused such a strong impression on all of us and an urge to protect them this strongly? I can see how the criai earned our respect, but I still don't have the full picture.

Because I sure am being held captive in a criai operated facility. They aren't repaying our sympathy in the slightest. We have been tricked-- no, no, Mun is evidence that they aren't united. This is more complicated than that.

> several types of commander
> could you lead a small elite unit or a vast force
I'm aware, yes. It's caused misunderstandings before among other societies who have a much more fixed idea of what "commander" entails in their own rankings. I know I wasn't in charge of any large sections of a swarm, so I believe I was probably... hm, yes. Not in charge of just a simple unit, but an elite force.

Thorn Flower. The name was Thorn Flower. Special operations and rapid response to specific, unusual scenarios. Yes. Commander of Thorn Flower. What happened to the rest of my force? If they're all gone and I'm not, well... no, they must have regrouped. It makes sense I'd be a priority target for capture, and I'd sooner sacrifice myself then throw the lives of those under my command to their deaths without very good cause.

Common misconception, that. Other species assume we see our soldiers as disposable, then turn around and order their own forces into fights they can't hope to survive.
Makes me sick. We sacrifice for others. We're an army and a family. ...getting off-topic.

> snuggle later
Oh it's ever tempting. I can explain it away as some sort of psychic feedback phenomenon, or something. Most aliens have no idea about psychic anything so it's usually pretty easy to explain away things that way. Or perhaps play into our misunderstood and frequently assumed biology and say I was reacting to pheremones-- no, no, that's likely to send very wrong signals, and I don't really want to complicate this working relationship. Besides, my type's a little leaner. But I can't deny that there's something about him that's-- what the fuck am I doing thinking about this at a time like this. I'm not even supposed to have reproductive desires. I specifically requested that. Ugh. So much for mastery over biology, or whatever it is the geneweavers like to spout off. Just like an operator to hype up things beyond the reality of the situation, but, well, that's what they do. AUGH. STOP. FOCUS. FOCUS ON THE MOMENT, BY THE WILL OF THE HIVE--

Hive.

No. No, no no I wish I hadn't-- I-- augh, no, no NO. No I can't-- I can't go back, I can't un-notice it now.
There's a profound absence, an emptiness, a background chatter I'd lived with my entire life and I just realised it's not there and it hurts and it hurts it is driving me insane I can hear my own thoughts in the endless echoing empty nothingness where is the Hive WHERE IS THE HIVE

No no no there is nothing good about this level of disconnection, this would only be possible in a few small select scenarios, and none of them are good.

1. The forces here have managed to artificially sever me from the Hive, in which case I should be a broken wreck even more so than I am now from the amount of brain damage they'd need to cause for that. Memory problems nothing, I'd have no psychic control, or the ability to form a complete sentence, or walk without falling over.

2. I am somehow out of range of the Hive, which suggests I'm not even on the same planet anymore and I'm doomed to wander space in an empty void of indescribable loneliness the likes no alien could possibly understand except with extremely inaccurate metaphor because it's on such a fundamental level-- it's... it's like, it's like you have gone blind and deaf and numb and totally insensate and you know the concept of others like you exist but you will never ever meaningfully interact with them, everything is a pale shadow, you are severely depressed among a party of happy friends, no, no, these metaphors are all wrong they don't work but it's bad

3. The Hive has fractured completely from a directed psychic attack or mass death, and everyone I know and love is wandering around in a panicked frenzy without direction, memories in a patchwork state, severed from rapid communication and access to the vast information stored communally amongst our psychic network. This is... extremely bad and probably the worst possible situation, but even then it's... not the first time it could have happened, so it should, in theory, be a disaster on a scale I couldn't articulate, but not a species ending one.

4. Oh no I just thought of a worse one. Everyone in my species is dead except me.

Z. Distract the guard right before Mun attacks if he seems to be. Use psychic stuff to get the guard to turn away.
SUCCESS

Focus only on the present moment. Before I get a chance to complete processing how bad a situation I'm in.
Trying to ignore the unending emptiness in my mind, body and soul, I channel some of it into the guard largely unintentionally as I try to get him to turn around.

He drops his (uhh, let's see, I've seen it before, it's, uh, like a sheet you'd scrawl on, but it changes its own glyphs, like some sort of paper that can think) smart paper device thingy and looks up and freezes. I think I might have just accidentally shoved the feeling of apocalyptic fear into him.
He runs to the railing and stares out over it, shaking.

Mun looks a little confused, but then runs over to the guard, loops his arm over the guy's throat, and pulls them over behind the crates. He then squeezes until the guy goes limp, and then gently rests him down behind the crates, taking a moment to arrange him so he won't fall over. Surface reading, yeah that guard's down for the count. It'll be some time before the combined psychic shock and physical incapacitation subside. Maybe even hours. Better not count on it being that long, though.

Wow. Okay, he does seem to have the strength and skill to subdue, that's for sure. I'm pretty impressed, that was flawlessly executed. That guy was still wearing armour. Then again, maybe they just don't have very good neck armour.

I also feel a sudden rush of attraction to him I immediately stomp to death before it occupies more of my brain.

"Nice work," I say.
"Good, yes," he says, looking and feeling unsure of how else to respond to me. "We go here," he says, and points down the path.
I follow behind him.

The walk down the long corridor is largely uneventful but the bitter cold makes it feel like it takes much, much longer than it does.
My antennae are feeling the cold the worst, next to my feet starting to feel like they're sticking to the floor with each step.

It feels like it's getting colder somehow.

Mun pauses, looks back at me, and keeps walking. I glean he was, for a moment, wondering if he should leave me behind, before deciding against it.
Well, I can't really fault him. We're complete strangers, even if we share common cause. If the room was a baking inferno, I'd be having to make a similar judgement call for him.

Still feel mildly betrayed, though. Just a little. He decided against it, after all. This time.

I see him move faster and faster away from me, and notice all the flickering lights I can see in the distance seem to be flickering faster, like the world is starting to speed up on me. At first I think this is great. Things are moving faster! I'll be out of here in no time.
Then I realise what's happening.

They're not speeding up, I'm slowing down. Everything is. My movement, my senses, my perception of the world around me. I'm getting close to an involuntary torpor shutdown, a last-ditch effort by my body to preserve itself in extreme cold. Something common among my species. It's not a guarantee of survival even by itself, but in a hostile environment like this I'd be surrendering myself to whatever my captors want to do to me. Very, very bad.

"Mun," I say, and he has turned around to face me before I am halfway finished. My body feels so heavy.

He says something I can't understand. It's so cold. I feel nothing.
Something tries to pry my closing hand open and grab it, I can't quite tell, things are getting too fast and blurry around me to process.
Before I know it, something is pushing me along and I'm watching a door hurtle towards me.

Well, let's ignore that and focus on each sense. Everything feels vaguely weightless.
I can't see much, it's too dark. The only light is coming from me as I exercise my psychic powers.
I can hear some squelching and rhythmic beating, but it's all very muffled.
I taste... well, I can't describe the taste, but it feels extremely calming for some reason. Scent is exactly the same.

So I guess I need to reach out with my psychic senses.

Hm. That's weird. I feel like I should be sensing a lot more than I am, but I pick out maybe a couple of weirdly familiar minds, and... that's odd. Usually it takes almost no effort to scan the surface of minds but I'm really struggling. Like I'm trying to turn a dial that's had greasy slime dumped on it. What is this? I feel weaker than when I had those dampeners on!

I guess I've traded one captive situation for another, huh.
Or maybe I died and I've immediately reincarnated or something? Hm. No, that's not how that works. Our kind can do that sort of psychic reincarnation thing but usually you lose a lot of who that individual was. I shouldn't have such clear recall of what I was just doing if that were the case. Wait. Is it clear? Was it just a dream? I'm so confused!!

Well, I still can't think of my name, so I guess I should pick a name for myself while I wiggle about and see if I can figure out where I am.

AUGH IT'S COLD AND much bigger, at least, that's an improvement. But it's cold! Wait. Where in the Hive am I?

[~UP, FACE HER TOWARDS ME,~], I hear a commanding voice say. I see an unfamiliar creature lean over and gently pick me up, a blank expression on its face.
It is covered in drab brown fur, and reminds me of criai a little bit, but doesn't seem to be one of those exactly. Fewer ears. Drabber. More, uh, floral?
Can't make out too much detail.

[~ANGLE HER UPWARDS,~] the voice says, and I'm angled upwards to see oh that is big. Oh, everything is so much bigger than me right now I haaaaaate it.

Hello, I say. Well, I try, but instead I get out a "Hbluh," as slime bubbles out of my mouth and I realise air tastes cold and sharp.

[~Behold, newborn, the glory and vastness of the Hive.~]
She looks around at the barren weird purple-topped cave we're in.
[~...hm, no, not an appropriate introduction at the moment, I guess I'm skipping the rest of that.~]

"Whuh?"
"Okay, I can speak verbally if you want. I'm exhausted anyway. Not much in the mood for the dramatic grandoise speeches. Congratulations on the following two accomplishments! You've been born into the world without significant physical or mental defects, and also you're now promoted to commander of Thorn Flower. Make the Eastern Swarm proud."
"...eh?"
"To ease the transition along Arvisa and myself will continue acting as interim command of Thorn Flower, but then it will be up to you."
"I was... I was just born."

This is a lot to take in.
Not the being commander, I knew that already, just the whole having just been born thing.
She's talking about this like my status as commander is something new??

The big creature shifts uncomfortably. "It is, uh, a little, ahem, unorthodox to spawn a commander in the field, an act that no Eastern Swarm doctrine encourages or supports outside of extremely pressing emergencies, such as the dissolution of the chain of command and the death of the current commander."

After a pause while I vacantly blink my eyes, she continues. "...which happened twenty days ago and eighteen days ago, respectively. Thorn Flower is not organised in such a way to function without a strong dedicated leader, and our drones are taking more and more effort to corral without strong psychic links. The sort only a commander can realistically provide and reinforce."
"Well, that makes sense, I am the commander of Thorn Flower, of course I should lead it." World's gone crazy, right? I feel like this was something I already just established.

I read from her surface thoughts that my accepting this clearly evident fact brings her unreasonable amounts of relief and a small amount of joy.

"My name is Lekseeka Relekt, incidentally, commander. Biofabricator for Thorn Flower, whose usual spawning needs don't really warrant more than myself, but do warrant one available at all times. I look forward to working with you and no doubt mass-assembling whatever replacement drones you need."
"That's a name," I say, and realise I have nothing to follow that up with, so now it just looks like I spouted the first thing that came to mind.
"...it sure is. Your name is Chykta 27th, by the way."
"No it isn't. My name is Reynoodlish. Also, 27th?"
"You named yourself?" She looks at me a little bemused. "You named yourself that... 27th incarnation of the Chykta template. A long, noble line of commanders and also the 26th that we used to form your nascent psyche. We can't just be expecting a completely fresh newborn grub to lead us, after all."
"What was that about the 26th?"
"At this time," she says, transparently ignoring me, "I need rest. I can answer some questions you undoubtedly have about your new assignment but then I require about two days in dormancy to recover my strength and resupply my nutrient stores. You were deceptively expensive to make, little commander."
"Commander Reynoodlish."
"Yes, yes, of course," she says, yawning again. "I live to serve. I can feel your mind bubbling over with questions. Ask away."

--- Possible Approaches ---

A - Ask questions until Lekseeka passes out
Oh so many questions I have. Any suggestions for questions would be a bonus! But I can think of plenty myself too, like "where are we", "what's going on", "why are you so big", "where are my forces", "what is this thing holding me", "why do you look like a big purple me", and so on.

B - Wiggle free of being held by this unrecognised furry creature and wander off
I can't abide being out of control any longer. I should not be taking orders from my subordinates! I'll show them!! I should inspect my new surroundings and forces, anyway.

Z - Something else (write in)

Why do I remember the Criai being friendly when my last known memory was them being hostile, and what does it have to do with the brain flower that alien has?

ask what is the current situation and what the immediate goal is. Because it sounds like things are kinda going to hell if they had to create an entire commander to run an army(?)/hive(?) that is apparently starting to fall apart.

Do you have a thorn flower emblem on you as well?
What happened to Mun/the Criai with the 26th commander?
What species is holding you?
Why does it have flowers sprouting from it?
How long will you be a grub?

Everybody else has most of the sitrep questions, though adding a question about the level of equipment and ammo reserves would probably be worthwhile.
So, how about asking about this body's psionic and physical capabilities compared to the previous life?
Also, do we have some sort of aide-de-camp, secretary, adjutant, second-in-command, or otherwise that can advise on the enemy's tactics? There seems to be memory loss regarding previous battles.
Oh, and are there open lines of communication to our [commanding officer equivalent]? Failing that, what are our standing orders?

Give the order to be put on top of her head. You're going to be commander, you must survey all of your domain and field. Questions after.
