"Well met, Sir Ridder. I am Father Sunmane. I am in charge of the Sepia Town expedition. You have already met Sister Eisenhaus, Initiate Bessingschauwer, Initiate Manhammer and Brother Chekov. They have told me about the valiance you displayed, all without wishing for anything in return and risking your own life. The Helianthus have great respect for those like you. The Sungod must have great plans for you, my son. Should there be anything you need, simply ask."

"Thank you, father, I am honored. I would like to request something rather mundane first: My hand is injured rather badly. Do you have anyone who can look after it?"
"Of course. We have a Corona of Healers. One will look after you right away."
He nods to someone behind me. When I look I see a bald robed man walk up to me who silently holds out his hands. I show him my mangled right hand and he gently presses his hands against it. I feel a rush of warmth like that of a soft afternoon sun.
"Thank you."
"Now, you spoke as if you had another request. What may that be?"
"This one is far more dire. There is a great evil on the rise just south of here. I first came across it when I travelled with initiate Bessingschauwer. In the very same day it burned down Iniziare Citta."
"Yes, the initiate told us about this. When we went to investigate it appeared like an old slumbering evil, perhaps a shrine that the heathen goblin settlements worship. But you say it is active?"
"That is correct. It appears to be a complex cave system, housing perhaps an entire army. They are lead by a figure who refers to himself as 'The Boss'. I am trying to form an army to take him down before he can do any more damage. That is where I humbly request any assistance you can spare."

The imposing leader takes a moment of silence to reflect on my words.

"That is indeed a dire situation. I am afraid we are not able to spare the manpower required to destroy such a rising force if we are to keep our hold on this district. I will inform the Sentinel about it. But please be assured, Sir Ridder, that should this 'Boss' try anything again, he will have Sunmane's Pride to deal with. I will personally assign my best to keep watch."
"Thank you, father. If I may be so free, I would like to recommend sister Eisenhaus, initiate Bessingschauwer, initiate Manhammer and brother Chekov to take up the duties. The bravery they showed in the face of overwhelming forces was extraordinairy."
"Hm. Very well, Sir Ridder. Eisenhaus, my child."
"Yes, father?"
"You will lead this arm of the Sepia Town Expedition. You will handle both intelligence and strategies."
"Understood, father. Sh.. Should I move into Sir Ridder's base?"
"My child, you misunderstand. You will not be under his command. On the contrary, we will relieve Sir Ridder of this burden. The 'Boss' is for the Helianthus to deal with."

I must admit, Ridder, your forces currently have proven ill-equipped to take on a threat of the Boss' level. Best to concentrate on problems you can match, and to build your forces until you can "return to the fray", as it were. A temporary tactical retreat.

It does little good, after all, to face a force that outmatches you and fail, when you could be solving a multitude of lesser problems.

120042

Yes, to outright refuse their plans would be both useless and unnecesarry. It is true that I can not take on the Boss' force by myself. I don't have nearly the resources the Helianthus have.
Instead, I have a group of strong specialized induviduals, meant for specific missions instead of a full on assault. There are many fights that will cripple the Boss that are within my power. But any way I deal with this can be changed over time, and it would probably be wise to invest time into thinking it over.

The Helianthus' power makes me feel both relieved and disstressed.

"May I ask a few questions?"
"Ofcourse, my son. What is on your mind?"
"Do you know of an organization by the name 'Knight Blades'?"
"I'm afraid I've never heard of them. Why do you ask?"
"It appears that the Fangs Mercenary Company was hired to destroy the Knight Blades, but instead attempted to assassinate me. It would be fruitful to know who hired them."
"I'm afraid I can not help you with that, sir Ridder. We tracked the Fangs here a while ago, but you were able to defeat them first. We know nothing of their activity since they escaped the south."
>>
No. 120057 ID: e3f578

>>
No. 120058 ID: 934ef5

We shouldn't let our efforts so far mean nothing, see if there is another task for our forces to deal with. Taking on some mission in their name, in exchange for their assistance with the Boss.

That is right. Eventhough I have openly allied myself with the Matriarch, I believe that with the Helianthus' actions it may not be the wisest choice to be seen with them if I still plan to trade with Sepia Town. I wholeheartedly support their campaign to drive the city's corruption into the ground - given that they do not go about it savagely - the merchants here are still my main source of supplies.
As for sister Eisenhaus.. The sooner she forgets about me the better.

I know very little of the lands south of North Piacevole. There is a desert to the southwest, but details of it are unknown to me.

"The south? Can you explain?"
"Certainly. The far south is where the Sentinels first successful expedition took place. Evil gnoll settlements hounded the humans of Gollicker's Bay for decades, until the Sentinel destroyed all of them. It is where he erected his tower. Sadly, a number of gnolls managed to escape into the desert."
"I see. Thank you."

The healer releases my hands. It is completely healed. Even the burnmarks have been removed.
Looking at it makes me aware of Sticks' and Iesgip's looks.

"Very well. I believe I best get back to my own base."
"Ofcourse, my child. You will always be welcome here. When Sepia Town has been brought to glory your name will not be forgotten."
"I.. I will keep you up to date on the Boss, sir Ridder!"

Soon we ride out again over the fields between Sepia Town and the woods. Sticks and Iesgip seem particulary cheerful, but the encounter with the Helianthus has left me with mixed feelings.

I'm not so sure about these Helianthus fellows, myself...
Their motivation seems to be pure but their methods are... blunt.
And the confirmation of their involvement in the burning of Geppa's village (and many others like it) does not bode well...
I think we would do well to keep our dealings with them to a minimum.

A thought to mull over in the baths:

I imagine that while it is nice to create, you still miss fighting to at least some degree.

Perhaps you could work with a smaller, lighter and more finesse-based weapon, like a rapier or some such, as part of personal training? I know it isn't your preferred weapon type, but I would point out that part of being cunning like Ridder is being flexible and precise enough to implement said cunning. And working with a weapon that requires precise manipulation for proper use may help you learn more about deft and precise hand movements, get you more used to making precision blows with a smaller weapon, and in general make you more spatially aware of your target as a result of the limitations finesse weapons operate under (can't pierce most armor, usually used for thrusts, etc)

The best part is the work to improve your martial dexterity will likely spill over, and benefit your competency at woodcraft.

So not only would you be drawing closer to your goal of ultimate swordsman, you also gain better capabilities in a field you have discovered (woodworking)

What do you think, Black Fang?

Looks like th'mermaid's got a crack in 'er tit.
Still looks okay, I guess.

But aye, th'elf's tits are much better. Feast fer the eyes they were when Grek 'n her were still wearin' those lil' dresses.
S'pose if I gotta choose I'd say Petal's more attractive. Grek looks like a skeleton most o' the time. But they're both nice 'n all. All the bad tension 'tween Grek 'n me 'as dissolved, which feels good.
They 'n Nakkers're all cute in their own way.

Ya know, I'm thinkin' 'ere 'bout that finesse stuff.. It'd make more sense I work on doing lil' careful movements in woodwork 'n then apply it to fightin'.
But then 'gain, I ain't plannin' on swingin' my cleaver any diff'rently.

The goal is simply to become as effective as possible at choosing where you strike with your weapon. After all, it hits with devastating force, so improving your ability to connect with those weighty blows is simply honing yourself in your chosen form of martial craft. That's what you should be thinking of in the woodwork, how to place a blade exactly where you want, and as you gain surety in your precision, to increase the speed and fluidity of your now more precise movements.

While doing this, attempt to apply it with your weapon. Try chopping the exact same place again and again on some wood, or perhaps throwing cuttable detritus (be it a plank of wood, some fruit or something else) in the air and trying to bisect it before it descends. Or if you have other ideas on how to work on applying deft precision gained from woodworking and personal practice to your swordplay, then follow it, you know your own preferences better than we.

Aye.. S'what I think. I ain't lookin' forward ta fightin' again. I'll do it ta protect Nakkers 'n the others, o'course, but it ain't gon' be fun.

I've been pretty big since I was little. Always got pushed 'round cos' I was estimated to be much tougher. Eventually got 'round to jus' usin' my size to my advantage.
People in town always said 'That boy's gonna be a murderer one day'. Always heard it all me life. So.. well, I didn't know what else to do. Jus' started murdering.
Didn't think o' much else but killin' 'n gettin' stronger to kill some more.

Ain't got that 'nymore now. I'm pretty grateful to master Ridder 'n Nakkers for that.

Voice of dissent here - don't talk to her if you don't want to, Terva. Doing so wouldn't really do either of you any good at this point. You're no psychiatrist, and she's not exactly a pleasant reminder of the past you're trying to get away from.

Oddly, but pleasantly, enough, Iesgip and Sticks have grown more friendly due to the competition. Perhaps because they feel like they have something in common. They are both taking care of the mansion right now.
I have not heard of Eisenhaus yet.

Regardless of who might be the best match for me, I would honestly prefer looking for one myself. Most of all, I do not want a relationship at all right now.
I won't be able to handle the added pressure.

I do not have any real hobbies to speak of. I don't particulary enjoy spending time on myself. Why exactly is vague. Perhaps it makes me feel jaded, or brings you out even more.

I greatly appreciate that you are letting me have my peace, if just for a day.

OK so, here's something that might be pleasant: think of how you'd like things to be, say five years from now. That's far enough away that pretty much anything could happen.

Don't bother about how you'd go about getting there, just try and imagine your ideal situation - where you'd live, who you'd have near you, what you'd spend your days doing if you had the choice rather than being constrained by duty and obligation. What would the best possible life for Ridder involve?

I'm not that great of a swimmer, no. My kind is build for flat windy plains, not water.

In five years, disregarding every obstacle.. I see myself organizing a festival, friendly townsfolk in the streets, talking casually with my dedicated soldiers, as my close friends find their seats, and my wife holds onto my arm, giving me a reassuring nod.
That is the image that forms. The details are unclear.

She taps the grass next to her. I kneel down.

Well I wouldn't go that far, but you guys have a natural chemistry and that's a good start.
But she's perhaps even less commitment in her than Sticks did. She doesn't want to lose anything so she never risks anything. It seems like if you can convince her you won't leave her behind then she'd be willing to stay with you just like that, but as it stands, she seems too afraid of a goodbye to even say hello. If you want commitment, you have to make sure she understands that there is always a risk involved.

Anyway. I'd hate to be a *ahem* block, but frankly, your love life is screwed up beyond what you can comprehend anyway. Do you really want another girlfriend to add to the quickly growing list? Save some for Black Fang, for god's sake, he's practically going homosexual because he doesn't have one girlfriend, and you're running around with, what, six now?

Jesus.

You know your mother is alive and she's out there somewhere. I'm sure she missed you at least, probably more, than you missed her. Hell she probably assumed you were dead and that crushed her even more than the apparent death of your father. She's a wreck. She needs people.

So hey, look. Okay. You nearly had sex with your mother. But you didn't! That's important.

I'm sure this is awkward as hell for the both of you and your next reunion will surely be uncomfortable because of it, but I'll bet you anything that even right now she's feeling better because she knows you're alive. Sure she probably feels embarrassed and awkward just like you do, but goddammit, you're both alive.

It seems I can only do things wrong. I felt so calm in her arms, the reason of which is obvious now, but I truly felt I finally found the woman that was right for me. Reassuring, dedicated.. It's all this damned romance talk that is getting to my head.

It is true that I am glad to see she is still alive. I understand that she must feel the same.

Fucking grow up.

Yes, alright. It is good that things did not go beyond what happened. That is very good. It is also good that I met my mother. Very good.
Alright.

Now, her hair. I remember her with very light blonde hair like mine. My father had darker red hair, but I inherited his yellow eyes instead.
How my mother got her hair black I don't know. Many things could have happened during our time apart.
But if it was not my mom, then why did I feel so at peace? Was that magic as well?

...Urgh--

Get Iesgip, go back to where your mom was and find her.
Take some initiative to correct the situation now you awkward military man.
Go! It wasn't your fault! You were confused.
But you aren't now!

If not, you won't feel as bad.

C'mon, Ridder. It is when people are stressed to the limits where one defines their character. I know you are a noble person. I wouldn't be speaking to you like this if you weren't.

You have to find your mother again and talk. You need to resolve this before it leaves an everlasting scar on your soul. You need to define who you are. Be resolute.

Get alcohol. Seriously man, it does help these kinds of things. What's your mom's name anyway?

Also you seem like you need company. Company of someone that isn't related to you. Ask Grek if she can come talk to you for a bit.

Magic... can do a great many things. It can trick the mind, muddle the senses, even show things that aren't there.

However, aside from other magic, it can be rather hard to differentiate what is not real from what is. The only real way we currently have to tell if there was anyone there but yourself is to take a knowledgeable tracker back to the exact spot you were and to see if it looks like two people had been there or one. The area that the, er, "struggle," happened would likely yield the most conclusive results. An illusion cannot leave physical signs, in most cases.

You could hand us off to Iesgip and send her out to look at the spot while you calm down if you wanted, Ridder. It's a tracking mission; low-danger, unless the magician that made the illusion is still around.

I suggest against the drinking actually... drinking and voices do not go well together (hell it's what got you into this whole business in the first place.)

Also, it is common knowledge that when a man wants a family he often effects to recreate his own. You want a family... you cannot deny that.

But it is unfortunate that you happened to unwittingly attempted to use some of the old components of your old family to recreate a new one. New cloth sewn to old will ruin them both, new wine in old wineskins, ect, ect.

Anyhow... I must agree that you must confront her again... as soon as possible.. she probably feels as awful as you do (if not worse. remember the fact that her being alone likely means you father is dead or missing... thus her fears of abandonment.)

A fearful as you are.. you are a knight... it would not due to have possibly your last living meeting with your mother have such a "dishonorable" tone. Besides, if your father 'is' dead then you are likely her only living family this side of the barrier... it would not do to have her wandering about when you have a home.

You were so at ease with her because your body reacted to her scent. It was an instinctual thing, and then you acted upon it because of all the romantic stress you've been under. As for her hair, I can hypothesize that she is in disguise for some reason. On the run from her people, perhaps?

Grek might want a little somethin' somethin' in return for having some of her alcohol, you could bring some gold with you to give her for funding her experiments and then afterward mention that you don't have any alcohol yourself but want to celebrate your victories a bit. If that goes wrong you could check with Iesgip and see if she has any alcohol or some recreational herbs you could take instead. If Grek and Iesgip are no help, you should probably just go.

I believe you underestimate the consequences that bringing Iesgip will have. Most likely it will mean she sees an oppertunity to woo me, and Sticks will shadow us to prevent her from getting the upperhand.
I will not have the chance to properly face my mother, which will already be very difficult.
Unless you can come up with a very
good reason to bring Iesgip, I am ruling it out.

I check the women's quarters to see if Iesgip or Grek are present. I find Grek and Petal, who appear to be massaging eachother's feet.

"Grek, do you any alcohol I can borrow?"
"..Y-yeh, check th'cepberd."

I check the cupboard next to the door. Inside I find a bottle of clear white liquid labelled 'alchohol' amidst a plethora of other bottles.
