Welcome. Welcome to the desert wasteland of Tethelum, home to vast herds of Skull Gliders and the vicious Sand Beak, and nesting place of beasts more violent and deadly then even the terrible Death Moaner.

But do not turn yet, for what lies beneath the hideous and death ridden lore that covers these terrible lands lies one of the most ancient and simple races to ever roam the world Of Moen. And here we see the beginning of one of these ancient beings. Some call them Kobolds, others call them Bolds, but in truth they are a race that holds no name, for they see no need for such things. You see most kobolds only worked to obtain what was needed, never worrying about things that could be ignored. They worked for shelter, they worked for food and water, and they worked to protect themselves from the vicious beasts that surround their borders. The only time the bolds ever found downtime was within the great feast fires at day's end.

And here, in this home, sits a new born child, his mother the only parent home while his father continues to construct and repair new and old homes around the village while also taking on the task of fishing for his family in his wife's absence to take care of the new born. Even during the miracle of life do the bolds continue to maintain their tasks, but it is worth it in their minds for it allows them to maintain those precious lives they continue to raise. But this child, this child is destined for something greater then that.

The great feast fires were always a place of excitement and fear, but unlike the other little boldlings who feared the great Swamp Sloth, and the massive Fire Ants, this bold reveled in the tales of the elders. He wished to tackle the great beasts, and fight for something that the bolds never had, and in some cases never wanted. He wanted a name, a name that would be honored above all others as the greatest bold to ever exist. He didn't want his simple life, he wanted glory, and adventure.

The other bolds mocked or ignored his "rants" and "ravings" including his farther who saw him continuing on the tradition of the bolds. His mother on the other hand saw what he was, She saw that not only were his dreams probable, but that he was destined to accomplish them.

On the morning of the young bold's right of passage, his mother gave him a ring and she said, "I found this ring in the mouth of a fish from another land, it spoke to me and said that if I freed him, that my first born would be able to follow any path he or she wanted, I agreed and he spat out this ring. He then told me to give this ring to the first born on his or her day of passage, and now is that time." Upon putting on the ring the young bold's head began to swim, propping himself against a wall to keep from falling he opened his eyes to what truly lie before him, he saw a vast land of both peril and danger, but also strewn with treasure and glory. and a voice within his head asked, "do you accept?" and with the words that mirrored every bold within the tales of the feast fire, he said...

"I do."

And that is where our story truly begins...

Fishing. You'd probably be able to learn from your mother as well as whomever usually teaches. Everyone has their own special little 'tricks' to fish. It should develop in you cunning, patience, and perception, not to mention some quality working muscle.

Though.. why don't your people give you a spear for spear-fishing? Is that more of a 'hunter' thing?

fishing is boring unless this is Df world were carp can eat you alive, hunting gives us nothing since we are not at a savanna altho making traps sound fun.

now carpenter may sound little demeaning and nothing dangerous, but we can make a wooden tank, trebuchets, wooden traps and if our little bold is truly bold, he can surely make better nail guns.

nail guns bigger that he is, shooting spears for nails.

Skills: Alchemical fire, Chemical treatment

Blacksmith:

Skills: Massive Swing, Burning coal

The line up from left to right is, Chrome, Mom, Dad, Twist, and Copper. I've met twist before, he's not a talkative person in public, but get him on a subject he likes and he doesn't stop, he's kinda funny. Chrome is normally the main character in the feast fires, but I highly doubt he did anything mentioned in them, not like I will be. 'While I'm not all that much excited to be taught by my father, I can't help but think you're right. I'm sure whatever dad has to teach me will prove beneficial in time, but I can't help but think about how I'm going to get out of this village. With him as my teacher it won't be often where I get to roam about on my own without him breathing down my throat.'

Dad: "So, you've finally come to your senses have you son? Decided it's finally time to give up on your silly dreams and work for the village like the rest of us?"

LB: "You can't stop me from dreaming dad, but I have chosen to seek your council and work under your tutelage as both son and student. Whether I work for the village or for my own deeds is for me to make my own decision."

Dad: "... Dream all you like boy, but like it or not, while you work under me and live within my home, you will do as I say, and let it be known to you that even if you do leave my home, that I will still be your master and that as your master it is my job to work those dreams out of you."

LB: "Then as a student, it is my job to protect those dreams and allow them to grow far beyond the pressures of your training."

Dad: "Son, if you truly seek to keep your dreams alive then you will do anything for them, so I pose to you this challenge. Within one month I want you to construct building, within this building I want you to house your dreams. If your dreams are as sturdy and as magnificent as you say they are, then a home built to house them should be just as sturdy and magnificent. I will teach you all you need to know to do this, but you must follow through. If you complete this task within a month, you may leave to accomplish your dreams, with my condolences. If you do not, you will work under me till the day I die, and then by my order you will never be allowed to leave this village. Do we have a deal?"

Settle this right now. Why does he hate your dreaming so much? Is he trying to encourage you by forcing you to surpass him? Because if so, you don't want a rival, you want a dad and a teacher. If he just doesn't think it's sensible, tell him you've already proven you're wise enough to learn practical skills for contingencies just by asking him, just because you have dreams doesn't make you stupid or unable to function. LB: 'There isn't much I can do I guess, if it comes down to it I can always back out and run away I guess... damn... why does he have to be so stubborn?'

Dad: "...so remember to follow the tracks of the gliders only when the sun is directly abo- are you even listening?"

LB: "Yeah."

LB and Dad continue down the path with LB's father continuing his instructions on how to follow the path. LB only catches a few notes including.

*only follow the skull glider paths at high noon
*if the path isn't there, run back to the village
*If it takes more then six hours to recover the materials needed wait till highnoon the next day.
*Never go alone.

After about an hour of walking a massive oasis appears on the horizon.

The silence remains thick till the two reach the oasis entrance. There pair begin to slow as they cross through the webs of vines and flowing streams. It is not long before they come across a strange tree standing below the canopy, but still somehow glows greener if not more so then those above it.

Dad: "This, is the eternal tree, a gift from the planet itself, it gives to us and we give back. It is a bond unrivaled amongst those unknowing, you chose to be my student, and as a carpenter it is you whom shall obtain the privilege of working with this miracle."

LB: "But why is it so miraculous, sure it shouldn't be as green as it is, but why is it so important?"

Dad: "With dreams as undying as yours I'm surprised you haven't figured it out. This tree, no matter how many times it is cut down, so long as it's own seeds are planted at the severing point, it will grow back in a matter of days, as strong and as green as before. This tree will never fade so long as there is someone there to keep it alive."

LB: "Is this the wood that is used throughout the village?"

Dad: "Yes. From this single tree came the support for every mechanism and building within our village. It is the backbone of our way of life. And with it, you shall create the skeleton for the home to house your dreams."

LB: "But Dad, if you know what my dreams are, then why do you hate me?"

Dad: "I told you, I don't hate you."

LB: "Then why do you act like it?"

Dad: "I don't mean to be rough on you, it's simple really, I disagreed with your dreams and tried to snuff them out because, believe it or not, you aren't the first to have such dreams. And those who have followed them foolishly have wound up dead or worse."

LB: "But I won't wind up like them, I'm tough."

Dad: "No, you're not, whether you like me saying so or not, the truth is, you are weak. And if you did leave now, you would end up just like them. But I won't let you. Now is the time for our deal to come into effect, to build your home you will need training, training that I will be giving you. I will make you strong, I will prepare you to face your dreams head on and you will succeed where others have failed. And if you do not pass my training and lose out bet, you will stay in the village, and live out your life. Fail to do either of these and step out of the deal and go off, I can't help you, you will be on your own with only your dreams keeping you alive, but without a body strong enough to press on. I am sorry for anything I have said to you that has harmed you, and I hope that you will forgive me, I simply did not want to see my son take on a dream he did not have the courage to take on. I know now, that I was wrong to try and snuff out such a bright candle. So what do you say? Do you accept my apology?"

...uh. kobolt style buildings? hopefully not. this little kobolt needs a style of his own.

first order of the day, invent a bunch of tools to make a actual style that is functional and beautiful.

can you make a arbitrary measurement unit that is constant? we will use this to make different types of triangles. we will also need a string and a drawning implement to make a circle.

can you arrange a small glass rod filled with water and a small air bubble inside it? we need it to determine if the building is straight.

lets see... you have a nail gun, but most carpentry nowadays use male/female joints. im pretty sure you can seal them with a nail instead of glue.

oooh i just remembered of a method to cut huge slabs of rock using wood and water.

now you must stand by yourself. are you sure you want a house? if you want to make a wooden mecha or a carrouage or a sandsail, you better speak now.

LB: "That was incredible! Where did you learn that?!"

Dad: "I learned it many years ago from my master from a far off land. He taught me many things. He was the first one to bring me to this place..."

*he goes to the top of the tree and picks a large fruit off it and cuts it in half, then he walks over to the severing point on the stump and places the fruit in the center.*

Dad: "I don't think I have ever told you my name son, it is within our culture that we must value names that suit us and that we give them to only those who must know them. It is time you learned, my name is Ronin. In an ancient language it means one who has lost his master. My master died what seems like not long ago, before then I had no name, I was master of nothing, he took me under his wing and when his teaching were complete, he died, his knowledge passed on into me. And that is how I earned my name. You my son, you will not earn a name so sad as my own. I will teach you and train you, but before that can happen, you must prepare yourself alone. You will stay here in this forest until this tree grows back. That will take at least four days. And when I return, I want you to move this log, using the knowledge you gain from your time in the wilderness. This is where your training begins."

It's becoming clearer now. A carpenter is also responsible for the care of this forest.

You will need to be careful about what you choose to eat, particularly if it involves killing something. Try to focus on fruit that you KNOW are edible, and try not to swallow the seeds. You may also need to work on your physical strength. Climbing, and lifting will be regular requirements, especially if you want to build something taller than you.

And with that LB and his dad head back home through the desert.

Dad: *whistling*

LB: *under his breath* "why does he have to make it look so easy?"

Scarab: "skree?" "skreek eeee..." "Skree" "chchchch." "Skreechch" *he looks back to his home on the very edge of the oasis* *The point of decision has come...*

The little scarab scuttles back and forth, hesitant to be going into the sands.

LB: "It's okay little guy, I'll be back one day, and you can hang out with me again."

The little bold knows that the little scarab doesn't understand the words, but that he understands there meaning. One day his friend will return, and on that day he will be strong enough to leave his home, he will be like his friend and be the best little scarab he can be.

LB: "I'm going out for a walk..."

Dad: "mrmph..."

LB heads out into the village.

LB: It's been a while since I've talked to you directly, you certainly are a strange thing. I heard your voice throughout my training... guiding me. Thank you.

LB continues to roam around the village, in time he reaches the center of the village where he sees something unexpected.

LB: Looks like I'm not the only one out here.

LB: "I thought I was the only one out here. Are you alright?"

???: "I'm fine..."

LB: "Why are you out here so late?"

???: "Why are you?"

LB: "I... I had a bad dream."

???: "... I don't like being inside at night."

LB: "That's..."

???: "You think it's weird don't you? Well I don't care what you think."

LB: "I don't think it's weird."

???: "That's what my parents say, but I can see their looks. I don't care what people think because even though going outside at night may be weird, it gives me time to think that I don't have in the day, it gives me peace. It gives me a break from the monotony of daily life."

LB: "... I know what you mean."

???: "..."

LB: "It's pretty..."

???: "It always has been."

LB: "Do you have a name?"

???: "Not yet. You?"

LB: "Nope."

The Mysterious Bold and LB chuckle to each other.

Several hours pass as they both stare into the well.

MB: "I have to go, I don't want to get caught again, if you ever want to talk again, I'm out here every night."

LB: "It was nice meeting you."

MB: "Bye."

LB: I should head back inside, but I don't think dad would mind if I stayed out till morning.

LB: Yeah she was a girl, I don't know if I like her like her, but she did seem really nice. She was kinda cute though. I don't know, if i am going to go on an adventure soon I don't think I want to get into any relationships that I'll have to end so quickly. But maybe...

LB: It should almost be sunrise I guess I might as well stay out the rest of the night. I'm curious though, my mom said she got you when she caught some sort of magic fish right? Well I gotta know, what were you doing before now, if you know?
>>
No. 190763 ID: 0b2a05

Not sure. It's possible we're the little voices hidden in everyone's subconscious, and that we've been giving good and bad advice to people since before time and space exist. Or maybe some kind of fish genie that suddenly manifested.

Or possibly everyone is crazy.

LB: Well that doesn't tell me all that much about you does it, oh well. Looks like the sun is coming up, most of the village should be getting ready by now, I guess I should head back. Today's the day I start building. I wonder what dad is going to want me to do with the wood...

(Author's intervention: Okay, so I'm sorry I haven't updated very often, mostly due to me helping out my mom get the house ready for my dad to get home from Afghanistan. Anyway because I'm going to be going away for... well I don't even know any more, it's going to be more then a week I can tell you that much, anyway because of this I'm giving you guys an option, you can either A: do the building manually and go through it step by step as I had originally intended, or B: Montage it thus skipping the training. You will obtain the bonuses I planned for you to obtain during the training, however the only difference will be that the montage one will look like my preset model for the houses (with a couple additions) while your model might look different. As I said this is your choice because I don't want to rush through this if you don't want to, this is your game, I just design the levels and prizes. This will be a quick vote cus I want to try and update tonight based upon the vote. Thank you for your patience to all of you who've kept this bold quest movin.)

(fine, going as planned then, no complaining though if I have to stop in the middle)

LB: "Hey dad, I think I found the spot."

Dad: "That's great, now can you please help me find the softest patch of sand."

LB: "All those years of adventuring and your not a morning person?"

Dad: "The best part of adventuring on your own, no alarm clocks."

LB: "So are we getting started on building my house today?"

Dad: "Yeah, yeah. Can you get that log down here? We should be able to set up your basic frame by tonight if we spend all day on it. And get some parchment and chalk and we can draw up some blueprints. Now if you don't mind I'm gonna go find a soft patch of sand to lie down in, tell me when you got everything."

LB: "Okay, I'm on it."

Dad: "Okay son first things first, before we can even start building we have to discuss design. Because of the wood we're using there aren't many options as far as base design, but that doesn't mean we can't add more to the design."

LB: "So it doesn't matter how I wanted my dream house to look, I was stuck with the dome?"

Dad: "Don't blame me, blame resources. Anyway, this is your base design fiddle with it till your happy, in the mean time I'll start putting the finishing touches on the wood we picked up."

LB: Well I guess that's a little disappointing... oh well, lets see what we can do with what we got.
