Look, being a hero is a shitty gig. It's got a horrible life expectancy, no insurance or pension plan, and it's got only a tiny fraction of the glamor that the stories sound like it has.

You should abandon the hero plan as crappy, get a steady job that lets you get more skilled with time, hook up with a cute girl, and be happy with what you have.

well then, does your world have EXP? if so then walking into the woods and murdering a bunch of animals should help.

"Um, forbidden texts? The kinds that teach spells and stuff."

"We have three of 'em here. First we have the Vortex spell, it sucks enemies inside and sends them off to the Afterlife, or it could send something out that could be useful, or bad, depending. Then we have the Life Transfusion spell. This can take the lifeforce from someone and heal your wounds. Last, we have the good old Fire spell. Sends a fireball at an enemy."

"Well, how much do these cost?"

"Five hundred a piece."

"Alright... I've got enough to get two, but that would be everything I have. What should I get?"

just get a fireball for now. then go murder some animals.

Get Life Transfusion. That should be useful even when you're fighting with your sword.

Afterwards, maybe we can go get a magic item or two? You already have a sword and some armor, right?

get vortex, start worshipping a god of luck to increase your chances for a favorable effect.

Well, that depends on what you're up against. What sort of monsters lurk around these parts?

Overall, I'd recommend Life Transfusion. It sounds like it has the best potential to be nonlethal, and if we get it to work in reverse we can use it to heal others.
