I wonder how liches do it.
It's only been half a day, and I'm already lonely. I don't think I could be one of those lone tower-dwelling liches forever, but I want to fight with everything I can. They say to fight fire with fire, some say to fight fire with water, but with my healing, I have fire and water.

Keeping souls in constructs is actually pretty hard, it's no wonder most necromancers aren't capable of this and just settle for animated remains! So, I just keep regular animated remains for the time being, but I think I can put souls into constructs with a little more practice. I don't really like all the creepy looking tapestries and wall engravings, so I'm having my undead minions rework the place to make it more homely. It's in my power to hold around 100 minions at once so far, but they're a bit weak. And the tower is so huge, it may take awhile!

Oh, and I let Shabin and Tae know I was alright, but I should talk to them more and settle on a meeting point.

There are three constructs that didn't die with the previous lich. They're quite helpful, and they say they serve the tower, regardless of the lich. Or in this case, not-lich. They tell me I'm at the southern peninsula's coast, but I don't know much about it. The red X is the enemy lich, and the green area is the area I (apparently?) have heavy influence in.

Oh! Speaking of the three constructs, here comes one now! It's my skeleton butler, he's very nice for a dead person.

>"Your meat from today's hunt, Madam. And might I add, marvelous changes you have made thus far!"
"Thank you, uh... Skeletal Butler!"
>"Also, I should inform that today is the first day of the week. This is the day that the local tribe gives their offering of dead. It was custom that in return, the old lich would give protection to hostile forces, such as the naga from the sea and harpies to the north. The lich, in his foresight, saw that the more the tribe thrived, the more population they would attain, and with more life comes more death. Perhaps you should meet with them, but it is, of course, entirely your choice should you continue this exchange."
>>
No. 332489 ID: 35e1a0

if all the dead they have are indeed from natural causes then i see no harm in this deal. and yes, may as well meet with them and tell them directly that while management has changed if they want this arrangement to continue then it shall.
>>

>>332486
Sounds like it would be a good idea to go meet with them, maybe also change the arrangments for the deal. Rather than them just bringing their dead they could bring their dying soon to be dead people. That way you could get some extra souls that you can then use for new constructs so you won't feel as lonely. Maybe even sew some nice skins on them so they won't look as creepy.

Have them bring their sick, injured, and dying to you as well. You'll heal them of you can, and animate them if you can't.
Also tell them that they're welcome to join your soul party if they so choose, but it's completely voluntary.

Send messengers to the Naga and Harpies informing them of the change in management and attempt to open trade with them. With a skeleton army you could turn your land into an agricultural powerhouse and have lots of food exports.

This is getting completely away from the issue, which is that you need to make a construct capable of traversing the distance to town at high speed. You still need to learn scrying and distance communication!
...try to make the construct out of wood or stone or something, since bone would attract the wrong sort of attention.

It seems this lich was not so evil. Firstly give your skeleton butler a better name. Like Charles, Winston, or Jeeves as was previously suggested. And compliment his dapper attire. Then I guess you should pay the town a visit and let them know about the new management.

"I like your attire, Winston!"

Okay, I have some bone flying constructs that can fly really quickly! Hopefully the naga and harpies take messengers. I'll send them an invitation.

"I'm the new lich! I mean, I'm not actually lich, but I'm in charge here."

"Nope! Also I think it could be nice to maybe go further with this deal. If you want, you can bring your sick or dying, and I can try and heal them!"

"Um.. well, with some skeletons I can help farm and maybe export food?"

...Well if they're happy with the current deal then we shouldn't change it, unless we find something we want from them.

Ask if they have any mages or something. If we can get some teleportation service going, or help with your magic training, it'd help a lot. Heck, just ask what kind of stuff they do in the tribe.

A good point to bring up is that you don't actually plan to stay here forever, so you'll need to figure out some way of making them able to defend themselves.

Be careful! Depending upon how they think, one or both of them might remain hostile instead of being friendly and take the change of leadership here as an excuse to probe for weakness. That means attacking you or the people who used to be under the lich's protection. Be ready to throw them back if they do.

Remember, trust but verify. Just because you want to believe that someone else is nice doesn't mean that you shouldn't prepare for them to be mean.

The other two stayed back at the tower to unpack their wagon. I'm trying not to think of what was inside! They looked really nervous, but I head on out to their village with the weird rabbit thingy. I'm not going to bring any undead with me, I don't want to scare anyone! Well, okay, I don't want to scare myself. It hasn't even been a day, but I need to be around real, living things!

>"We're the product of a collaboration between a wizard and a cleric. The cleric wanted to practice resurrection, and the wizard giving sapience and demi human intelligence. To reflect it, he morphed our bodies to a demi human state. But, our bodies are weak, so magic is really all we have going for us. The lich didn't even like us trying to protect ourselves, probably so that he could keep leverage on us. It isn't a bad life though, so we didn't try to resist too much. Anyways, that wizard and cleric fell out of favor from any major magic business, and we were seen as an object of their madness. And that's the whole sob story as to why we are what we are, down so far south where even the birds fight for territory. Sorry, I guess you didn't ask. The less I know the better.

Don't get me wrong, we had our minds wrapped around magic, but this at least tripled our ability, and it feels constantly rising. And it sticks around for the most part if the souls leave?

I could cry.

We don't know how to build fortifications. In fact, I don't even really know what fortifications look like, it's not like we go attacking on the offense. Not sure if harpies or nagas have them either, they attack most. It's not too uncommon for orcs to attack though, but we never see gnolls, thankfully.
>>
No. 332682 ID: 35e1a0

well just see, nice first layer is surround the outside of your village with a 15 foot tall 2 foot thick solid stone wall. should completely deny access from the nagas. and then, for harpies, put a tower in the four cardinal directions. it will have a thin slot near the top so you can shoot a crossbow OUT but they can't shoot in.

Fortifications are mostly pretty simple. Just think, "What would make it a real bitch to get from outside of this town to inside of it, especially if someone inside was shooting me while I tried to get in?" Then make that happen.

The harpies are going to be a problem, though. They can fly over most things. Basically the only way I see to defend against them is to have bunkers for the populace that they can't easily land in, coupled with ranged attacks from inside firing slits for blasting them while they're close. But even that's not perfect.

Adding on to his suggestion, the first layer should have an entrance/exit that you can open and close, and maybe a secret tunnel incase you need an escape or something.
Towers and bunkers are always useful, let's hope some of your people can train well enough to shoot.

Just a few hours practice, and we can make underground bunkers, high rises and towers and secret entrances and it'll actually be a real town- no, a fortress. We might be able to expand, like this!

First things first, where those recently townsfolk? That would tell us whether the necromancer is nearby.

Second, How's and where's Tae? And the magic tower people?

You definitely could just punch the zombies, but Im not sure how you can deal with the necromancer. Good news is that we have the soul of a lich for what its worth. Which isnt much considering your own aptitude towards magic.

How about this?

You go find someplace you can hide in/hold.
Then, we move on to Tae and get her to that location, where you two meet up. You two stay there as long as you can (perhaps it could be a place with food, like an inn or something), while we go to Chee and inform her of your situation. She said she has flying mounts or something, so maybe she can use the maps she's just gotten with the maps she got of this area to reach you guys.

THEN, you three meet up. Either Chee finds a way to contain the city (and the zombies, so as to prevent the spread), or she manages to see what's up and fixes the problem. I'll assume the source of the problem is in the Wizards' Tower, so she could just head there and fix it.

Sound good?

Running may not be my style, but neither is effective suicide. Without any grand ideas about punching a necromancer to death, I should get out of here. I've been fighting for at least half a day now, and the town is slowly falling.

Interesting though, they don't seem to be looking for Chee or anyone in particular. They're just raising a lot of dead, taking over this town. I'm sure there are survivors, I hear faint fighting, but it's most likely holed up in surrounded buildings. Running along rooftops is hardly inconspicuous anyway, I'm going to get found. Is there anyone with you in the windmill? If the forest is infested with zombies then I have no idea what you're going to do. Maybe if you could find a boat, you could go downriver. Or just flee further into human lands... but right now the most important thing would be getting Chee here to wipe out the zombies and fight that necromancer up there. I'm not sure if she has any fast transport... A surefire method of getting Chee here fast would be to go visit the dragon.

alternate solution: ask the lich king to help. im almost sure he wont like someone else gathering a army.

Hold off on responding again so you get your full two days of preparation. For those two days, I think the nearby village needs to practice healing magic a lot more. And ninja stealth and speed. At the same time. Being stealthy and quick is probably good for healers anyway, what with not wanting to be targeted, but it would also make them really good undead and lich assassins.

That's right I'm going to need all the help I can get! No surrendering! I'm sending messages to the Dwarven paladins, Gnolls, each human kingdom's capital, and where Winston told me the Lich King retrieves messages. I don't think my kobold home is in any position to help, I doubt I can get that many here! I just hope they're alright. I'm also sending out a dragon to pick up Shabin and Tae. telportation and scrying magic. you can turn a bunch of conscripts into skilled warriors inside a few hours. increasing your mobility would be a very good idea. especially since the key to beating a necromancer lies in maintaining a positive kill ratio.

the strategy i'm thinking of is you use scrying to see where he's doing a major push then you port in, pass out souls to the locals and maybe stick around to provide support. rob him of momentum and slow or stop his advance long enough for people to start fighting back and you could win this.

As it is, I can't find his soul at all, I can only feel all the souls inside Tom!

The only time of such a disaster was when the Devourer ran rampant, that I can find. However, it seems that this land's history is actually quite short... apparently it was only inhabited 300 years ago?

Back to business! I saw his memories for some reason, but I don't think I can send him souls just yet. Maybe if he were closer. Also, since I sent a dragon out for Shabin and Tae, they should get picked up before they reach the gnoll lands!

Remember that I'm talking through the bird, I can't send the souls to him right now so you'll have to talk through me.

"Hello Clamp! It's me versus the northern lich, and I'm a friend of Shabin's by the way! A lich is trying to become the new lich king, and he's making his move! You've got to fortify and get ready for a massive assault, you're right in the path of where all the zombies are coming."
>"We're aware of the zombies, we scouted 'em massing up. So they're after you, huh? Great. Shabin ain't a name I heard in awhile, but a friend of her's is a friend of mine. Th'human town up north already fell, we found out recently. No point in warnin' a man about an incoming sword when e's already impaled."
"It may be best if you come south!"
>"It ain't that I don't believe you or that we can't move on a moment's notice. If we go south to ya, we gotta steamroll through orcs, then harpies. How many zombies are comin', anyway."
"Each half of the human kingdom's, then probably dwarves and who knows what else?"

Heal imbued trip mines. Have dragons air drop them in the paths of the zombie army approaches. That should thin them out a bit. Also, airbombing them with heal imbued iteams, the wider the area effect they have the better. Since they're also imbued to AOE heal they can be dropped over troops already engaged. Which should give you enough time to get the Orks possibly on your side and get them to come up and reinforce the gnolls.

Convincing the orks might get a bit tough though. Boneheaded bastards might need to be shown that you're more powerful than them and you might have to word your demand into something that doesn't seem like they're subjugating to your rule.

Get Harpy tribe and Orc tribe to unite in love. Going to need a love potion though, for both of them, and it's going to have to last pretty long. Better check the lich potion store.

Or use a sane solution. Like giving the Orcs the land of the gnolls and promising the gnolls the southern human lands, since those are probably going to be sort of empty anyway and the gnolls are already nomadic. Then you can promise the harpies some human lands as well. There is going to be a lot of empty space when this is over.

Then after speaking it over with the harpies and orcs, they'll take each half of the gnoll territory for letting the gnolls pass through! Just a little break, then either I study a new spell, or read on how to move phylacteries. So far the vote is 1-1, but correct me if I'm wrong.

New spells. Moving a phylactry isn't going to be useful to you right now. Undead hordes will still be bearing down on your tower, lots of people will still die. It will be a good thing to know later on, but right now it's not that important.

New spells that can be applied to the current situation and destroy the enemy is useful though, very useful.

The dude has a spell or item that makes things that die in anyway within' it's area come back as zombies. What we need is a constant heal shit within an area spell or enchantment. Undead will take constant damage, and our living allies don't die as easily. Sounds win-win.

Haha, very funny. I'm not some monster like Chee, I get tired quick. I'm better than any mage I've seen, like that's saying a damn. Yeah, Chee mentioned an undead army marching down. Could be every last soul outside of a mile radius from the sounds of it, but that doesn't mean we don't need rest. Our one village is looking swell.

I'm wondering if we should cover it from one side of this peninsula to the other. We would be spread very thin, but then the army wouldn't be able to just, ya know, walk around.

Indeed this is one of the more important matters, we need to find out how to negate this "soul ripping spell".

And ears, you need to stick together, if they get you, they get stronger and it's real easy if they can just pick you off little pairs at a time.

I'm not sure. You could make a wall or something but in the end your main priority is to keep yourselves and the incoming gnolls alive. If they reach the lich tower then Chee can just give them the smackdown in person. Though... you know she'll probably be on the frontlines anyway.

The lich tower isn't important, is what I'm saying. Though thinking about it, maybe it is. I mean, there's a fuckhuge crystal on top of it, maybe the necromancers could take that over and use it to fuck us over.

Go ahead and build that wall. We can put gnolls and orcs and harpies behind it, if the latter two races wise up and run back here after the zombies arrive.

The preparation for defending out town is going as could be expected after having Chee's power lent to us. Which is to say, mind numbingly unbelievable. Our village is unrecognizable. Almost looks like a proper outpost for a lich's tower.

Haha, I'd let Chee have my soul if it meant saving everyone. But I don't have much in my own natural talent, I don't think I would be very good.

Yeah, we're going to stick together of course. Only a few people are let out of the town at a time.

A wall isn't a bad idea, it might slow them down a little bit? Nice to know we don't have to keep the tower up, either, but it seems to hold all the lich's belongings. It's probably best to keep such treasures in our hands, we should fall back to the tower before the tower falls back to us.

Make some walls and dig some holes. Deep, deep holes. You're going to be facing hordes and hordes of zombies. You want some place to put the bodies for burning so they don't just pile up and climb a mountain of corpses over the wall.

Worst case scenario, of course. I really hope it doesn't come to that.

In any case, a wall from shore to shore, as high and thick as possible. Then start harvesting that forest and putting it behind the wall. Wood is useful stuff, you don't want them to have it.
>>
No. 333299 ID: 1854db

>>333293
How about, instead of building a wall, you make it really hard for people to go around the fort? Like, you can make ditches that funnel the enemy to you, and spikes all up in the ditches. Or just put spikes everywhere except in one route that leads up to the fort.
>>
No. 333300 ID: cd63e9

you know what might be a clever trick? make some large caverns underground around your town. once the undead army shows up you can collapse them taking some of the undead with them. it would also close off an avenue of attack.
>>

Yes, lots and lots of trenches are helpful to have. Also, would it be possible to make the peninsula narrower with earth magic so it would be harder for the undead to just move around?

Good point. We have decent firepower considering our low numbers, but this isn't the time to get economical. We'll probably double the width of the walls. But absolutely, our housing is currently underground, but if this settles down then we'll make things a bit more.. liveable.

Good idea about the holes. We'll trap up the slope upward to lead into pits, and keep some fire mages blasting them.

It sounds there's a chance orcs and harpies might come, with gnolls. We'll definitely build that wall, then, and make it defendable. Funnels as well, to try and focus the enemy down certain paths with spikes and traps and the whole lot. We might be able to make the peninsula as a whole a bit thinner.. hey, yeah, maybe we really can. It would certainly take while, but at the very least we could at least make a huge chasm!

Underground paths are also good. I think we'll make them just as much for offense as much as so we have a safe passage back to the tower if we lose position.

Well, I shouldn't sit around staring at the long horizon for too long, lest I not live long enough to go over it.

Hello again. It seems everything is going as well as it could be. I've gotten the hang of a healing ward. It doesn't last forever, and even less time if it's overwhelmed with undead in the area, but it will definitely hurt.

Also, my messenger to the western human kingdom was just shot down, it seems.

To install the wards, I need someone to sneak into the harpy and maybe orc lands to put them in. I feel that if we mess this up, they'll feel we're betraying them. They're so hard to work with, I don't think they would believe it if I said these were healing wards. Ugh.

Damn Chee, you need some Zs. But you might not need someone to sneak the ward into the harpies. They seem a bit less warlike than the orcs, and you've already made a deal with them. You might be able to just hand the ward off to them. Present it as a gift, for when the Lich army does inevitably come, and let them know they're free to fall back to the area you control.

Instead of warding the orc lands, I say you put that effort into a ward for your own. or if you were already planning that, a stronger or second one.

The messenger to the paladin was just destroyed, as well. They didn't do it themselves, it looks like they have something similar to what I just made, an anti undead field across the land.
You're right, I need to sleep, I'm about to pass out. Shabin and everyone and the gnolls are moving south. My construct will alert me if there's a problem, and I'll have a more sentient construct offer the wards to the harpies, or use Tae if they don't. But for now, I'm going to bed.

When you get up and send a message back, specifically ask what the point of all this destruction is? Destroy the world for one lousy 'boldlactery in a desperate grab for power? What would he rule as the new King? He's pathetic, this plan is unworthy of a lich of any caliber.

I should be up. I should be scrambling to prepare for a fight. Before the messengers were shot down, I got a lay of the land. The lich isn't bluffing. Sure, a zombie isn't a big deal. But over ten thousand at the least? Most are coming south. Most of the human kingdoms are fighting for their life with some strong necromancers. The elves are silent and waiting, as are the dwarves. The rest of the land, for as far as I can see, is turning black.

How could a single lich do this? Was the world always this fragile? I guess I can't worry about now. I'll take your advice for the next day. I'll attempt to contact the paladins again, but I don't know how to make actual golems yet.
