I get up and shower. It's too early for this shit. I don't really have time to relax and have a nice breakfast. Apparently it's 'urgent.' Whatever. I didn't really want to bother cooking something anyway.

I brush my teeth and fix up my fluff in the mirror. Then I get dressed and leave for briefing.

As always, Mr. Efrence is there, and the rest of the executives. All dressed proper and excited for the big mission. But they don't have to actually do anything. They get to talk about it for an hour, and then they get to go back to smoking pricey cigars and playing golf in their offices, or whatever they get paid so much to do. Or they get to go home and sleep like normal people at this hour.

>"Kali, we have called you here today because we have recently discovered that one of our competitors, Venzimu Technology, has been developing a new type of battery. One that will function for thousands of years before it is depleted. It's not completed, but our sources say that it works, and will be on the market soon. With this technology, they will make countless billions."

It's always money with these guys, but I guess that's the same reason I'm tied to them.

"So you want me to take it, right? Just steal it right out of their hands."

>"Yes. We'd rather you were discreet about it, but given your unique style of 'discretion,' we have come to expect collateral damage. It doesn't really matter, so long as you bring it to us."

"What does it look like?"

Efrence brings up an image of the battery. It is octagonal, and about the size of a football.

>"Adaptations of this technology into portable devices, spacecraft, vehicles and homes will make this one of the most important inventions of the century."

"And when it goes missing from them and suddenly you guys are selling the exact same thing they were going to, it's totally not going to be suspicious, right?"

>"We will sort out those logistical issues at the appropriate time."

"So, why did we have to catch this magic thing so damn early?"

>"We figured it would be easier for you. Most employees will be at home for the next five or so hours, although there will be scientists working, no doubt."

Yeah, and security personnel, dickhead.

>"You'll find your equipment in the usual place. When you are ready, there will be a VTOL waiting for you at the rooftop. It will take you to the R&D department of Venzimu, where you will find this item. When you have it, we will send a craft to pick you up."

"Great."

>"And Kali? Don't fuck up."

It is a short trip to the Venzimu Technology R&D building. The battery is somewhere inside. I don't know where, but at least I know what it looks like.

I could take the stairs down, or I could abseil down and in through one of the windows.

I use the cutter.

It slices away the window easily, but when it's complete, it falls back out, and drops down the length of the building, along with the giant glass circle it was stuck to. There's a loud crash.

The alarms don't go off, though!

Inside the building, there are a lot of computers. It's some kind of office, I think. I don't know. They didn't give me a map, which sucks. I don't see anybody here.

If only there was a way I could get some information about this place...

>"Please don't..."

He's shaking, and he's pretty young. I'd better go easier. I don't want to traumatise the poor guy. I take the gun away from his head and try to look a little more relaxed, although it's probably hard to tell.

"Ah, sorry. Listen, I just need some information. Do you think you'd be able to answer some questions?"

"Oh man. How do I get there? Do you have a map? Access card?

Sounds like we need to try engineering first, or look for an access point to the labs if they're sealed off. Where you are now dictates what's easiest and most convenient to start with though.

I'd say wait a moment to see if he leaves before shooting him. If security thinks you've moved on to a different area or left already, makes your life easier. If he starts searching the room, stun or shoot him. (Is the stunner even useful against someone in low profile body armor?).

Of course, the guy comes further into the room. He probably only heard someone shuffling in here a second ago. Unless he was just practicing his 'burst into a room and shout "FREEZE" technique.'

>Is the stunner even useful against someone in low profile body armor?

Yes. It wouldn't work on somebody in power armour, such as myself, but Venzimu's guards only wear a ballistic vest and helmet over their clothes. It's easy.

I get my stun-gun out quietly, and as he walks past, I shock him right on the neck. He barely notices me before he collapses.

Using his own handcuffs, I bind his hands. On his body I find an SMG, which is shit compared with my AR, but he isn't allowed to have it anymore. There's also an ID card, like the one from the tech I interrogated earlier. Probably with more access. He doesn't have any snacks on him, but there was 50 credits in his wallet, which are now mine.

I could go somewhere else. It might still be in this area, but it certainly wasn't in this room. If I were in charge of some multi-billion credit project, I'd want to keep it pretty secure.
>>

It's likely the guard has a communicator or something. If there's a comm on his belt, take it away. If he doesn't have one, it's probably hands free, in his helmet. In which case you should remove it. Actually, since we want to gag him anyways, de-helmet him anyways.

I take the gun out of the guard's holster, unload it and throw it down the hole. He doesn't really look like he could use it anyway, he's bordering on unconsciousness.

Well, he took the job, so don't blame me when shit hits the fan!

As for the scientist, he is searching on the ground for his glasses.

"Where are prototypes kept?"

>"You! How dare you come in here and disrupt my work!? You 'corporate agents' are nothing but a blight!" He says, putting his glasses on.

"The battery, dude. Where is it? The sooner you cooperate, the sooner I can leave and go back to my cozy bed."

>"How do you know you didn't just blow it up, you moron? You are endangering the future of civilisation with your behaviour!"

"Come on, even if it was in here, there are probably plans somewhere else. I could take those too, while we are at it."

>"No, I will never surrender it to a fool like you."

Even with a gun pointed at him, he is not intimidated. I will need to turn it up a notch. How do I force him to show me to it?

Right, new target. I point my gun at the guard.

"What about this guard here? What if I put a hole in him?"

The scientist changes his tone.

>"Don't. He's only doing his job, and he's no threat to you right now."

The guard weakly raises his head and tries to speak.

>"M.. Mer... ci..."

Mercy? Is the guard begging for his life?

The scientist stares at the guard for a second, and then his tone changes again.

I don't think I need to rip out the guard's headset. I take his helmet off and throw it down the hole. He's in bad shape, but he'll probably live, if he's tended to soon.

I grab the scientist by the coat and help him to his feet. We go into the elevator, where, rather than pressing a button, he presses a series of them. The elevator begins to move.

This dude is lecturing me!

"Because I'm not great at other things, okay. Don't tell me how to live my life, or I will smack you around, buddy."

>So wait, people working for Venzimu Technology aren't corporate agents?

In this context, 'Corporate Agent' is a sort of hype-term for us mercenaries. When this kind of thing began happening at such a great level, that is, corporations actually engaging in physical conflicts with one another, it was a label given to us by the media, really. Although I do not represent any sort of agency, it is not unknown for our kind to come from such an organisation.

Tell them they can pat themselves on the back for looking tough, and at least trying to do their jobs, but this is the time to back the fuck up and let you do what you want so that nobody dies and no more labs have to blow up. Threaten hostage, and demand that he go to another floor.

If this works out, and he goes to another floor, point out that you're not trying to steal the battery AND erase all data on it; you're just trying to level the playing field. Does he really believe that the fat-cats who control his corporation will use this invention purely for the good of the people? No. All corporations are greedy. But by spreading the tech around, you introduce competition, which lowers prices, spurs innovation, and reduces cost for the consumer. Okay, first: priorities. Deal with the scientist. He can't be trusted, knows too much (Kali, Omi, Omi's face, Eference) and the info about Mircea fits too well to be a lie (explains his sudden change in behavior).

Second priority: Omi. Can he be trusted? How well do you know him, Kali? Is a he a personal friend? Someone who works for your bosses as well? A free agent? Because it does seem sloppy you wouldn't be told you had inside help available. He could be playing you.

Omi is one of my very best friends. He's adorable, but he's absolutely ruthless. If I had shot him, I would be completely shattered. In the past, he has refused very valuable contracts because he knew I'd be working for the other side. We have worked side by side many times, facing death. We would never betray one another.

As for why Eference didn't say about his presence? I have no idea. I can ask him when we get back. If we get back, that is.

I return my attention to the scientist.

"You were leading me to Mircea? You prick!"

I press the gun uncomfortably hard into his back.

>"Gah! Let go of me!"

"No. You will tell me where that battery is, or so help me, you will meet an agonising end."

>"No, that wouldn't work. For one, it wouldn't seem right for me to take a prisoner straight into the vault. Besides, they would never believe a simple guard could defeat such a skilled mercenary. No, we need something else. I know the layout of the building here. I think it's a secret underground level, but whatever. I just came down here with a couple of guards, so it's not that secret."

He gets a napkin out of his pouch, and with a little blue crayon, starts drawing.

>"I'm going by memory, so bear with me. This is the approximate layout. The shaded area is the vault. I obviously haven't been in there, so I don't know how big it is, its layout, etc. We're down the bottom, at the 'X' marked here. The scientist was correct, there are two guards on the vault door. There is a third guard as well. The third guard swaps with one of the other two when they need a break. There is a bathroom really close to the vault door. This other room here is a common room for the guards."

"A common room?"

>"Yeah, you know. It's got a TV, vending machines, chairs. For taking a break. Then there's two more guards for general patrolling of this area. One is lying on the ground over there, and the other is telling you all of this information, hehe."

>"As for inside the vault, we still don't know exactly what kind of security, other than Mircea is probably part of it."

"So what are you thinking?"

>"Maybe if I took the place of one of these guards, and you wait in the break room, and take him out when he goes there. Then, I can kill the other one at the door, and then we can go inside."

"What about the extra one?"

>"I dunno. If you see him, shoot him."

Is this a good plan?

>Do we have any past experience with Mircea? What do we know about him?

Mircea is the biggest dork ever. But he's rich, and he's rich because he's good. He's also very theatrical. He loves swordfighting. He thinks everyone should swordfight. I worked with him one time as well. He'd use this sword at every opportunity. He's been doing this mercenary work for longer than I have, and is more skilled as well.

Sounds like we should bait him into getting ready for a swordfight, then shoot him a lot.

Omi's switch-out and shoot plan seems about right. If they ask what's with him taking over for the relief guard, say that the relief guard's taking a break. Double-break!

Ask Omi how he got in. This is a good time to formulate an exit plan, so his entryway can be our exit, maybe. Though I suppose we will still have to go up to the roof to reach the evac craft...

Later:

The explanations I can think of for this range from bad (Omi being willing to lie to emotionally manipulate you) to incredibly bad (Eference setting you up as a fall guy).

-There's a spy, who Omi SOMEHOW has access to (For examply by way of a third corporation which also wants the battery.)

About a secret and highly illegal mission. And remember these "corporate agents" are not steadily employed. They're apparently contracted for different jobs by different corporations. Like Shadowrunners.

I can't think of anybody Omi could have asked. unless of course there's someone on the inside who just dishes out dirt on their own employers to anyone who will listen.
I find that unlikely.

I also just remembered the fact that there are two corpses lying here. Forget about hiding bodies. Let's stick to the plan for now and do it fast.
Keep your eyes on Omi and keep your hands on the battery once you have it.

Omi doesn't seem like a danger to the mission. He seems like a crazy stalker who may have bugged Kali to find out about her mission. Which is a problem, yes, but a problem to be dealt with later. He's definitely not an enemy agent, as he could have easily screwed us over and he didn't.

"Gotcha. What about entry to the vault?"

He walks over to the dead scientist and takes a keycard from the body.

>"I think this would do the trick. I mean, all these guys have a hand in the tech development, right? So they must have access in order to stash it here. I mean, who else would they trust for such things but the creators?"

"That makes sense, I guess. Let's get moving, then!"

>"Good luck Kali."

Omi and I start down the same hallway. Omi breaks to a casual walk, as to not bring suspicion. I turn off into the break room, and right through the door is the third guard. It's dark, and he's resting on the table with the TV going loud. This must be why he didn't come out during the fight earlier. I don't know if he's asleep.

Whatever, he'd probably be easy to kill. The problem is making sure it's done before the other guard gets here, and done quietly. It would be problematic for the other guard to show up while I was working on this one.

One thing to bear in mind: if I was paranoid enough to lock an liable-to-be-stolen artefact inside a vault with a mercenary guard, I'd hook up some external cameras to let those inside the vault know what's going on outside. You might also need Irritating Scientist's finger/hand/eye if the vault lock is duel-factor. With his sword, Mircea snaps the rifle out of my hand. I still have my pistol and my knife, though.

>"Kali... There is no need for this animosity. This is no way to treat a friend. Remember how well we worked together last year? You are truly a skilled warrior. Let us not come to blows over such a meaningless commodity such as money."

I should have guessed. I'm not really good with a sword, but I'm pretty good with my knife. Do I accept his challenge?
>>
No. 456181 ID: 1987d1

Hmm. You're pretty good with a knife, but he specializes in his rapier, and has reach and mass on you. All that puts you at a disadvantage in a duel.

Not that just attacking gives you an advantage, either. He's bigger than you, fast, and has a reach advantage. I don't see how you can draw and fire faster than he can sword you (I suppose you go 2handed, blow with knife, fire with handgun). Your armor will protect you from slashing blows, but I have to assume that blade is made of something strong enough that he can penetrate if he stabs you. You're also in close proximity to your more vulnerable friend, and an immediate attack doesn't come with a free safety net like the duel does. Tactically dicey.

This agents not killing each other thing could be kind of useful, though. ...and I suppose you could always just shoot him if you lose. Hell, Omi will probably do it before you get the chance.

What the hell, go for it.
>>
No. 456182 ID: e3f578

The only reason he wants to keep you alive is so that he can bed you later. He's obviously not that good of a friend as Omi the way your attitude towards him is, so of course you should suspect ulterior motives like that. He's a nutcase that likes to play fictional stories and cut-scenes out in real life and his language will reflect that desire. I don't see that much of an advantage gained by doing this dual and it would be stupid to ruin your reputation over failing this dumb thing. Hell, you might lose a limb. And it'd be worse if you did it and went back on it mid-fight as that might really piss him off by making yourself come off an dishonorable.
I mean hell, if you wanted to lose and walk away from the battery with your tail between your legs and not kill the enemy, you would have surrendered hours ago in the vents to Omi and his "coworker" he killed. Does he think just because you might lose this battle means you'll just walk away? Just make those men's lives ended meaninglessly over as something as stupid as honor? I mean hell, at least they were killed for money whether you succeeded or died on this mission normally.

If that's power armor he's wearing, could your knife even penetrate it?

I think bat ears actually look like this.

Now, I'm no expert, I'm just talking based on a little something I call experienced-based expectation.
Look at those wings. They're HUGE. No matter how well he folds those up, they will always work a bit like a parachute while he's on the ground and slowing him down. His armour also looks bloody heavy. I think you have a serious speed advantage. When he takes to the air, even better. He can't hit you with his sword from there either.
So stick to your pistol, keep away from him and pepper him with bullets. Aim for the head if you can. Should you come across your rifle while running around the room, grab it and increase your bullet output.
Finally, when he starts flying around, anticipate where he will land and make sure to be far away from that place, when he does.

This is the strategy. You should lie and agree to the suicidal duel anyway.

He jabs the sword into my shoulder, between the armour, but still, I'm not really hurt.

Well, your options right now are to either pull Omi off, honor your agreement and walk away, or take the opportunity to shoot Mircea.

Since walking away was never an option, you know what to do.

I suppose you could try stunning him in the face or something (fry them fake eyes!) but then you kind of have to close into the mess with the other two. Although, one advantage of going this route is you might be able to fake out Mircea, make as if you're going to pull Omi off until the last moment.

You could just step on Mirceas sword and pull Omi off of him, but i don't think it is necessary to shoot Mircea.

At the least we should give him one more chance to back off, he might have a change of heart if he is lying on the ground and we have a gun pointed to his head.

But if he continues to be stubborn or tries anything funny you should not hesitate to shoot him.

>How in the fuck did two soldiers of fortune become so crazily loyal to each other, or at least Omi to you?

Okay, story time!

When I was a lot younger, and new to this kind of job, Omi was just a street urchin. Omi lived in the alleyway that I passed through most days. He'd politely say hello every day, and often I would bring him something to eat in the afternoon, then I'd sit with him and talk for half an hour or whatever. I felt terrible for him.

Nomally I'd do work for smaller businesses, or gangs or whatever. You know, less ambitious, but still ugly work. It didn't pay a huge amount, but because I was good at it, I got a fair amount of jobs. I was becoming better known. Naturally, some employers tasks conflicted with the interests of others.
Anyway, one day I was attacked. The leaders of a minor gang had, in their meth-headed wisdom, decided that I was causing too many problems for them, by killing X or blowing up Y. They confronted me in this alleyway about a block from where Omi lived. There were about four or five of these gang members, armed with bats and knives. They were going to kill me. I didn't have my weapons by my side, and I was unprepared. It was foolish of me to have not forseen it.

But before they could harm me, they were gunned down. All but one, who dropped his weapon and ran screaming. And out from the alley came this kid, with a machine pistol in his hands. It was Omi. I won't ever forget that sight. That was the first time he saved my life. He told me that the small acts of kindness I showed to him meant a lot. When he saw I was in trouble, he had to help. I worried the gang might have come back for him, so I let him stay in my apartment until things blew over.

Of course, Omi already knew about my line of work. Many people from that area did. One day, he asked me if he could tag along 'unofficially.' I allowed it, and it was a good decision, so I let him tag along more often. At the end of each mission, I would give him a small portion of the pay. It was worth it for the backup and extra firepower. Plus, Omi had a proper place to stay, and money. For this, we were grateful for each other's company.

This went on for about two years, until Omi finally got a real contract from a security company. It allowed him to afford a place of his own. Now we both work for the same company, and Omi sees me as the reason that he got out of that alleyway and into a new life. And if it weren't for Omi, I'd be dead.

On Mircea, I find this stuff:

*1000 credits

*Ivory pipe

*Fine rapier w/ particle disruptor

*Regular rapier

*Fancy dagger

Amongst the four guards he was with, there's this shit:

*170 credits

*2 pistols

*2 SMGs

*Miscellaneous personal effects

Over at this big safe thing, there is a large portal and some steps leading to it. The portal doesn't look big enough for a person, although you could crawl through it. Next to the steps is a small computer terminal.
>>
No. 456551 ID: 1987d1

Hmm. The pipe is apt to break. The fancy dagger and rapier might be worth pawning, if you can be bothered to carry them. Money's always good, unless 1000 credits are awkard to carry. The guards' guns aren't much use unless Micrea broke your assault rifle. The best of the lot is probably the disruptor blade. Has potential tactical applications, and is probably expensive.

Check the terminal. I assume it's the lock? Although I suppose we could always try to cut or blast our way in (although that places the target at risk).

I instruct Omi to look at the terminal next to the portal while I inspect Mircea's fancy rapier.

It looks like a normal rapier, but when I twist the handle like he did, the whine begins again. It sounds like a dentist's drill, but quieter. This is the disruptive function of the weapon, which makes it so effective. I don't really understand the science, but if I'm not mistaken, the blade emits this field that fucks up the molecules of what enters it, so that when it touches a solid object, it's a bit like you are cutting through a liquid. Of course, the field is microscopically small, so the sword doesn't just 'melt' whatever comes near to it, and so the cut doesn't close up behind the blade. I've never used anything like it before, but that's what I'm told.

>"Hey Kali, there's no password!"

"Are you kidding me?"

>"No, I'm serious! It had a logon prompt, but when you press 'cancel,' it skips the password screen and logs onto an administrator account."

I walk over to where Omi is standing and look over his shoulder.

>"This big machine is some kind of archive or repository. It's got documents, and most of the projects are stored in it. This terminal lets me access them. The files, like the electronic plans and stuff, can be downloaded from this terminal onto a portable drive as well. The actual hardware is kept in 'bays' in this massive wheel. I assume that portal there is how you access them."

"Omi, we're looking for a power unit. I don't know any special name for it, or ID number or something."

>"That's alright. There's only one entry under 'power unit' anyway. This should bring it up."

The giant wheel begins turning. It is smooth and completely silent. When it stops, there is the sound of motors, and something moves down to behind the portal door.

>"It wants a password to open the door."

"I have a key."

Warn Omi that if he wasn't actually hired like he said he was, that will be bad for his reputation as a mercenary. And even if he was, it really sounds like it was on the down low, and the extraction team may shoot him out of suspicion, either by them themselves or their superiors their informing over radio which probably also aren't aware of Omi's presence. There might actually be infighting between some superiors over this secrecy or he's been used in some foolish plot or something.

Tell Omi that he should really research and think about what his employer's are asking him to do next time, if they ask you to do something potentially stupid, which may not even concern the mission itself but instead things like causing infighting inside a business like I said earlier. Secrecy can be pretty great, but it can be pretty stupid too, specially with the stupid, scheming white collars you work for. You're not lecturing him or mommying him at all, you're just giving him a pointer. Employers can be really dumb sometimes. Don't do everything they say without sufficient capital to back that up, and charge higher for how stupid the actions are if you're going to do them anyway.

Efrence rolls his eyes and walks out of the conference room.

I turn to Omi.

"Thanks for coming along Omi. It was a surprise, but I really appreciate it."

He smiles.

While I' am happy at the good end and all, there is one thing left to answer. If I recall correctly, Omi downloaded all of the project plans from the archive.

Considering that Venzimu probably has other projects, product schematics and such on that archive, did you get any bonus for that portable drive's contents? After all, detailed knowledge and schematics of every other project and products Venzimu has, should earn your employers a pretty penny considering they can deal with copyright infringement or at the very least that is what they implied in your briefing... I think.

Regardless, did you get a bonus for the portable drive?

I have to say, I'm somewhat disapointed we found a non-lethal way to bypass all those guards only to have our ride massacre them.

Oh well. Moral of the story: it sucks to be a grunt.

Omi's total disregard for authority is kind of cute.
