What kind of great hero makes such a simple mistake as grabbing an unfamiliar Honedge by the hilt?

What an idiot.

Then again, I guess I’m preaching to the choir here.

Time to take this meat block out for a test drive, am I right?

You know, I should have expected you guys to defend his actions, given the circumstances, but for some reason I just didn’t. Well, whatever.

Point is, I’ve stolen his soul, which is... kind of what Honedge do when you grab them by the hilt. And until his body dies, he’s got a little bit of an opinion on what we do, but for the most part I’m running the show. When he dies, he’s going to end up exactly like all of you did: a single voice in a potentially endless soul chorus providing commentary and advice on my personal life whose advice I may take or ignore at will.

Fun times. Anyway, let’s pick his brain and see what he’s got on him, equipment and history-wise.

I’ve imagined up a little profile of sorts for us so you can get a better visual. I like the name Perish, but I’ll file the others for future use. And I don’t even really care what this guy’s name is. His Apocalypse Archetype is Lone Survivor, which is pretty typical of any lone hero wearing a ten-gallon hat exploring some haunted ruins, so I’m just going to call him Lone Survivor. Maybe Lone for short.
He’s got a Beretta and a Desert Eagle, both of which he’s trained with, and a hatchet strapped to his leg. But I guess he really needed the Sacred Sword to save the town. Heh. Get it? Because I’m a haunted sword hanging out in some ancient ruins that knows the technique Sacred Sword. Anyway, here’s a list of the rest of his junk:
Gas mask
Bulletproof vest
Duster + dumb hat + dumb leg pouches
Multipurpose army knife
Lighter
Canteen
Town map
Belt of Pokéballs
Pokétch
Ammo vest + ammo + guns
Gun cleaning kit (small)
Duct tape
MRE
Painkillers

Anyway, this is the part where we decide what to do. We could go back to Solanum Town--the nearby town in a dome--or we could, you know, not do that.

Pokémon Wasteland?

Hm. Are the Poké Centers dead? How rare is ammo? Will Pokémon in pokéballs bleed out? Can you steal Pokémon souls? How much damage does a gun do to hardened types of Pokémon, like steel-tipped bullets versus rock types? Can we purchase elemental ammo to deal with special types of Pokémon?

And will you PLEASE LEARN MORE THAN FOUR MOVES?! With all those souls you can relegate move duties to your voices!

Well that's just greedy of him.

So does he need to keep holding you now? That could get inconvenient in a lot of situations, especially if he is right hand dominant. (As a side note, is giving souls back something you can do? If you do that just before your host dies you might be able to limit the number of backseat drivers.)

Anyway, you going to go save the town and get that "totally a sword of destiny" rep or what?

TOWN AHOY!!! gotta be better than wandering around these wastes.

did you ever think that your lack of success so far might be in part because of your refusal to bond with any of your wielders? just saying. we have it from pretty reliable sources that pokemon who like their trainers tend to perform better.

Well he only had five, so he was probably trying to max out his pokemon count. Odd, you'd think he'd have read the Pokedex entry and warning...

Let's wander into the wastes and fight a deathclaw. Man, I hope evolving from Kecleons didn't give them camouflage powers, that would suuuuck.
>>
No. 708785 ID: a22f87

well if you're looking for adventure I guess we should at least pretend to be this guy for now and head back to town. See what they needed saving from.

And no offense to you but why the hell did this guy need a sword? He's loaded for bear and has some fairly good pokemon on him. Grabbing some random sword in an old ruin seems rather redundant at this point.

Oh and just curious but say this guys somehow lives through this whole thing and we go on a glorious adventure that's talked about for ages, would we just let him go with no memories or something and just leave him confused as fuck to what just happened or what? can we even let him go if we wanted to?

Oh right, that's another reason. Deliberately choosing a known afterlife over the unknown alternative.

(But really, he probably didn't know. There's only a million different kinds of 'mon now, who can remember all the lore. His own fault for not scanning with his pokedex, though).

Do his memories tell you what he's supposed to be saving the town from?

I have… considered the notion.

>well if you're looking for adventure I guess we should at least pretend to be this guy for now
He can pretend to be himself. I’m not sure I could mimic his… unfortunate dialogues. He’s still able to see and hear everything, and I’ll just let him do his thing while interacting so that nobody gets suspicious. Speaking of which.

>Do his memories tell you what he's supposed to be saving the town from?
There’s been some tampering with the seal that ensures that none of the toxic, unfiltered air from outside gets in. The townspeople think it’s some Bisharp sent by their Dark Lord Yveltal God Of Death, so, naturally, get the Sacred Sword for that. Because it’s Destiny™ and all that. It’s what heroes do. Less because he wanted a Honedge, or a new Pokémon, or a new weapon, and more because of the expectations of his life’s narrative. He has a role to play. A niche to fill. And, naturally, to fill that niche, he has to obtain an Object of Power. It just so happened that the object of power is now taking him for a joyride until his inevitable demise.

We should probably take care of that, though.

So we head back to Solanum Town.

Where Ancient History Comes To Life

Everybody is super impressed by the fact that he’s got me hanging out with him now. But the only one who pays me in particular any mind is a redhead, who runs her hand gently along my blade. “How is it?” she asks Lone.

“Well, the blade’s sharp, and it feels powerful, so—“

“Oh, no, I wasn’t being clear.” She taps me on the pommel. “I meant the possession.”

Lone’s natural response is “What?” but he says “Interesting, but good,” because I make him say that. She giggles.

“Can I come with you to help save the town?”

Lone really wants to say “No, it’s too dangerous,” but I’m all for new party members as long as they’re useful, so I keep him shut up and ask her myself. “Do you know what’s going on?”

“I’ve got a pretty good idea,” she says. “A lot of the Ghost-types in the catacombs under the museum and resurrection clinic have been driven out of their homes by the toxicity level underground, and the seal is only accessible through the catacombs! So I’m thinking that the culprits are probably immune, but once we take them out and fix the seal, the filters will do the rest of the work.”

“How do you know that the Ghost-types have been driven out?” Lone asks.

“I study them,” she says, shrugging. “Anyway, we should get going. There’s no time to lose!”

>It just so happened that the object of power is now taking him for a joyride until his inevitable demise.
Isn't that sort of true for an object of power?

>I meant the possession.
So at least one person knew what the wandering hero was being sent to collect.

...actually, if you think about it, if the intelligence behind the "holy sword" is a known entity that has resolved crises in the past, it would make a lot more sense for the town to trust you and your latest puppet to save them than the latest wandering vagabond acting on his or her own. Sending heroes to you isn't just fulfilling a narrative conceit, it's ruthless pragmatism.

>she studies ghost types
Well there's at least part of her interest in you.

You should probably find out party member #1's name at some point.

“Hey,” I say before we go through, using Lone’s mouth. “What’s your name?”

“Virginia,” she says. “But most people call me Gin.”

Then she tightens her gas mask and presses forward.

She seems to know her way around this place pretty well, but the puzzles are always presented to newcomers, so as soon as we solve them it’s easy to move on.

We’ve got a few different options: keep quiet until we make our way to the next puzzle, try to make small talk with her, or ask her about something specific like her Pokémon or her family or backstory or something like that.

“So… you research Ghost types?”

“Yep! The town’s full of them, so I’ve spent pretty much my whole life surrounded by dead stuff. It’s really interesting! Some of them remember a lot about history, if you can communicate with them.”

“Can they die? Out in the wastes, I mean.”

She shrugs. “Yeah. Little bit weird, but… yeah.”

So… okay, that doesn’t bode super well for me, but whatever. “What kind of ghosts are down here?”

“Well, since the breach, pretty much the only things left down here are Gastly and Haunter, since they can survive. But normally you’ve got them, plus Yamask and Cofagrigus, a lot of Litwick, a couple of Honedge, and every once in a while, a Spritomb.”

Interesting.

“So… you know what Honedge do?”

She lets out a high-pitched giggle. “Oh, boy, yeah I do. Not a whole lot of people in this town are aware of this kind of thing, but, you know, you read up on the material and you learn, hey, every single person that has ever grabbed a Honedge that they don’t know very well by the hilt and tried to wield… well, they get their soul stolen! Ghosts love to take souls. Same thing happens with Chandelure, you know. Litwick steal your life energy and Chandelure will burn up your soul for fuel if you’re consumed in their flames. It’s neat.”

The conversation takes about as long as it takes to get to the next puzzle. Looks like the same deal to me.
