Okay, it’s 7 in the morning, I’m a little hungover, and just about ready to get blood drawn to pay my rent. Just gotta make sure I got all my shit together.

… I hope being hungover won’t affect the price, but whatever. I really need to get this over with as soon as possible. The streets are getting more and more dangerous for humans these days, so I wonder if I should take anything for self defense, though if a peace officer is feeling pissy and wants to search me, there might be a fine. Hell, maybe I should call Mylia for a ride, but I might have to lie about getting blood drawn if I do. I could also get a taxi, but it might be a bit expensive. I don’t what the fare would be until the taxi actually gets here though, and the cabby might ask for a favor as well.

Rent is $1000 and is due tomorrow by 8 AM.
I have $937 stashed away in here in a safe cubby.
Selling blood should make $100.

I can’t stay out after dark, around 8 PM.
It’s not safe.

You're not alone in this. Call in the favor for the ride. You can even be honest that you'll be selling blood simply for some extra scratch.

Call Mylia, have them drop you off at a convenience store near the blood drawing place. No one can blame you for wanting a slush! But why do you need to lie about it?
>>
No. 990151 ID: d9c975

Call Mylia. Be honest about the blood money if you can. Look at what you've got lying around for self defense options just in case.

Hmmm… maybe it would be best just to explain things to Mylia. We had a bit of a fight over this last time, but I scheduled an appointment anyways. The aether plant nearby was damaged in an explosion a couple days ago so I can’t get any work, and this is kind of my last option. I think she’ll be understanding.

I hope she is, she’s kinda scary when she gets really upset.

I’ve known Mylia for awhile now, at least a couple years. She’s a pretty good friend, and uhhhh also kinda cute but I’ve never told her that. If I’m able to make this last rent payment and move out of the city, find a good job somewhere… maybe I’ll have time to ask her out or something. But things have been too busy lately to do that.

A-anyways, I’ll give her a call.

Bweee-bweeep! Bweee-bweeep!

Wait, I thought she was at home? Aw shit. Oh well, I’ll leave a message and maybe she can meet me there.

MYLIA is not available. Leave a message for MYLIA after the tone. BZZZT

“Uh, hey Mylia, it’s me. I know you didn’t want me to, but I have a consultation at the blood place today, and I was wondering if you could either give me a ride or meet you there. I uh, know we talked about this, but I kinda need the money today, so I hope you’re not too upset. Anyways, see you soon. Bye.”

Yeah she’s totally gonna kill me.

Welp, since she might randomly show up along the way, I’d better walk. I’ll be able to save more money that way, and if I take the right streets, I should be able to avoid the worst spots. I’d better decide whether to take my gun, and decide what else to bring too. There’s a chance of running into either human gangs or beastmen gangs.

I have my gun. It’s a fancy pistol my dad used after the Great War when he was a commando or something, and he gave it to me. It’s pretty customizable if you have the parts, but the only extra part I’ve only got an aether sheath which is very illegal without a permit. It, uh, wraps magic around the bullet or something? Makes it hurt magic creatures a lot more, but it slows down the bullet and makes it weaker against humans.

I also have a big fuckoff flashlight, but it’ll be kinda weird walking around so early in the morning with a flashlight. Less conspicuous than a gun if I’m searched, but also less safe against gang members.

Which one to take…
>>

If you're worried about it take the gun. How likely are you to even get searched?

>>
No. 996496 ID: 54ce8b

Can you take the aether sheath off the gun? Would it still be illegal? If so do that.

If not still take the gun. And the flashlight.
>>
No. 996526 ID: c48caa

Assuming you don't have the tools to take off the sheath, and the fact that it's still early in the morning, you might be able to get away without taking either. You can just be back home before things get dangerous. And you don't want to start an argument with your friend either for carrying.
>>
No. 996527 ID: f18774

The flashlight could be carried inside your coat or something like that.

How through are the officers when they check your stuff? You could disassemble the gun and hide it in the flashlight if you know you're about to run into an officer. Of course, that only works if you know when/where you'll run into an officer, have the time to (dis)assemble your gun, and works off the assumption that police won't open the flashlight to search it.

A flashlight with batteries works as a good club though. You're not carrying much, so it wouldn't hurt to carry it, right?

Take the Gun AND the flashlight. No reason not to be prepared for every possible scenario. Also this load-out means if you can't get to the blood bank you can wait until the evening and turn to armed robbery instead.

Damn, now that I think about, I really wish I hadn’t packed my utility belt. I should’ve just left it out for after I was ready to move out of this apartment…! Maybe if I find a spare [b]utility belt[b] on my way through the city, I could actually have an inventory to manage… something to keep in mind.

This jacket doesn’t have pockets, and the pockets on my pants can only hold a couple small items at a time: my keys and wallet and a spare magazine of ammo; my hands barely fit as is! I can also only tuck one item in my waistband at a time, and right now that item is gonna have to be the gun.

The flashlight is a gift from one of Mylia’s friends that has a special kind of aether battery inside, I think he actually custom made it? It won’t run out of juice for a long time and is sturdy enough that it’ll actually weather a fairly strong beating. The problem is that I can’t remove the battery without, again, specialized tools. No hiding gun parts inside it, unfortunately.

Trying to disassemble a gun to hide it isn’t a bad idea though for future endeavors, I’ll try to remember that one. I’d probably need to wrap the pieces in something so that gun oil doesn’t get everywhere.

Also, I can take off the aether sheathe without specialized tools, thankfully. I guess that leads to the final consideration…

Do I take the High Road and pass by the peace officers, or the Low Road and risk the gangs?

Normally, the peace officers are actually pretty laid back, but with the military build-up on the border outside the city and the State ordered curfew (thankfully, it ends every morning at 7), they’re stretched thin and on edge these days.

The gangs are taking advantage, of course, and while there has always been organized crime here (according to Mylia), the past few months… something has changed. They used to be “respectable businessmen”, the kind of mobsters with suits and ties and that actually helped the community in some ways. Nowadays there are mobs and beatings in some places, and even shootings. They do leave humans alone, but that makes me feel even less at ease for some reason…

… also, those are the actual street names. Its not called the “High Road” because the peace officers are super morally praiseworthy or something.

The high road! Keep risks to a minimum
>>
No. 1001921 ID: f18774

I'd take the high road. Just go though casually and stay relaxed. They won't search you unless you're going though a check point or if you look suspicious enough, and being in a panic would make you suspicious. If they do search you, just be polite. If they find the gun, say it was a mistake or habit.

High Road it is then…

Damn, the army has definitely been working hard. It’s… a little concerning, actually. While I don’t watch the news too closely these days, I know that the political situation has been getting complicated, and in a real bad way. I still hope there won’t be another war though, not after the last one. Even if I’m not from here, I feel bad for everyone who would be left here if an invasion started. The entire city could be wiped out, even with the fortifications.

Daveth.

Uh oh.

Get them to calm down and explain yourself. If they’re that worried about you lying or doing something stupid, they can come with you right? Might as well drag them along for uhh, protection or something. Def don’t think about smootching them or nothing, no sir…

You owe rent. If you don't pay, the local mobs will frame you for one of their crimes and ensure you're arrested by the army. You just need $63.00 and you can pay them off.
Hell, you'll let him pay them off if it means getting away faster.

“Because I still need to pay rent, Revaris! You know the security forces won’t let me leave unless I have full marks on my work visa, and my request for leniency was rejected.” I look down. “Look, I’ve honestly done everything I possibly could. Short of trying to sneak out, which you specifically said not to do… its all fucking bullshit. I’m not even a citizen of this country, but the high councilors won’t-”

“SHHHHH gods above, don’t let the gendarmes hear you say anything about the Hierophant or they’ll rip your spine out. Alright, I hear you kid, I didn’t mean to jump on you like that. Just haven’t heard from you for awhile, you know?” He sighs. “Okay, so how you are planning to pay then? I don’t have much on hand to offer, sadly.”

I wasn’t going to beg money off him anyways, but I’m surprised that he’s short of cash. “You’re short? You’re a big time mercenary, Rev! What’s the deal, I thought the council here paid in gold, were you not able to exchange it?”

He chuckles, but he’s not smiling. “No, Daveth. Old city-states like this might be somewhat… antiquated, but believe me, they make sure they’re banks are cutting edge. They rely on mercenaries for survival since they can’t field a proper army, and if you want good mercs, you pay good money. Pay’s been delayed this month though which is unusual for a League member.”

“Then why don’t you just leave?”

“Because I’m an honorable mercenary. A fine, upstanding gentlefae like me always waits at least a week for money issues to get sorted, one way or another. Besides, your girlfriend would kill me if I left you in a bind without at least saying goodbye first.”

“Wha- hey now, she’s not my girlfriend.”

“The way you look at her ass? You’re either a pervert or taken, kid! Or both, hahaha!”

“Besides, she looks at your ass too!”

wait she looks at my ass? does that mean she thinks I’m cute-

Oof

“Anyways, we’re getting a bit sidetracked! I can’t give you a loan, so how are planning on paying for rent if you’ve got no money?”

“… uh.”

“… I got a, uh, invitation by the high council office to get blood drawn for a loan.”

oh that’s a bad look
He sighs again, and sits down. “Kid… you’ve got a special talent for getting into trouble, you know that?” He takes out a cigarette and it seems to light on its own. “An invitation, eh? I guess I can’t get too angry at you for that. Listen… you need to be careful in there. Don’t sign anything other than the entrance documentation, don’t accept any verbal contracts, tell them you’re only there to sell a safe amount of your blood for this one time, and then leave as soon as you can. Take Mylia in with you as far as you can- I can tell by your face that you called her. Trust me, she won’t be happy about this, but she will support you. And for the love of the gods, don’t insult the Hierophant, don’t make jokes about the Hierophant, don’t mention the Hierophant, don’t do anything to attract the attention of the Hierophant, or he might ‘take an interest in you’ and that’s the last fucking thing you want. Even Mylia won’t be able to protect for long against that.”

… what the fuck have I gotten into?

He smokes a quick drag from his cigarette and looks up. “So! Any questions?”
