I've been flying across the swamp for a couple of days. There is no life here, not even the faintest sign of civilization.

There is nothing here but murky swamp. A fetid mist rises from the filthy water for most of the day. I have been too afraid to land. I've been terrified of the water and the mist, but now, I'm almost too exhausted to fly.

I see something below. It looks like a cottage. Could this be Childless Meg's tower? How should I approach?

I try to fly but it's too heavy! I scream and kick it in the head!

The thing comes apart! It's biting me, harder than any normal person can bite, but it isn't penetrating my magically-tough carapace. Also, I think I'm a lot stronger than I thought before. I've never been in a fight ever in my life, but I guess I'm not so wimpy after all!

I walk up to the cottage, and try to think of what to say to get admittance. The creatures don't follow me up the bank.

I stomp on the dead Gour until it comes apart. It's surprisingly easy.

I go up to the door and knock, announcing that I have a message from Blacksoul.

The door creaks ominously open. There is no one behind it.

The interior of the cottage is dim. Spices, jars, parts of things and strange apparatuses are suspended from the rafters. There is a small hunched figure, no taller than half my height, sitting in a rocking chair and wrapped in some kind of dirty dress.

Random things like chairs, tables, a broom, some dishes and clothes are scattered around, and the whole place smells like spices and decay.

There is a crib sitting near the oven, and the weak, sickly cries of a baby Ravian are barely audible.

"What does Zorsuz need? Be quick. You have nothing that interests me. Whatever parts were put inside of you are as barren as my swamp."

Her voice is a grating croak.

I deliver the message. The creature that I assume is Childless Meg sits thoughtfully for a moment. I stand there, wondering what to do.

"Get out of here, stop wasting my time," she croaks again.

I'm off.

****

Several more days of traveling and I reach what I can only assume is the Queen of Sorrow's castle.

Her entire domain is a blasted wasteland where poor folk toil in the dusty soil for sustenance. The whole area is parched and desperately dry. Even so, storm clouds heavy with rain constantly roil overhead, but never give succor to the thirsty land.

The castle is stark and white. It almost looks like it's naturally eroded from salt or something.

I've been flying continuously for over a week. It's really starting to get to me. How should I approach?

I fly up to the entrance and wait.

Nothing happens. Thunder rolls overhead.

As I thought, the whole structure is made of salt or some other white mineral. The whole thing looks worn down and shaped by wind instead of manual labor.

Inside, I see a massive hall with unlit chandeliers hanging from a the ceiling. A huge door is at the back of the hall.

I call out, but there is no answer. No one comes to greet me.

Announce your purpose and who sent you, then bravely walk inside.

You're not a pink sex golem anymore. You're a supernaturally strong and durable messenger of one of the strongest wizards. You can like that or not like that, but in this world, that's worth being proud of. Moreover, Blacksoul wouldn't have told you to come back after delivering the message if these were folks who eat their messengers.

I walk inside. I am not a weak little toy anymore. I'm individually powerful and backed by a powerful wizard! I have no reason to be afraid.

I stalk through the door, resisting the urge to lick the walls before I walk deeper inside.

This room is dominated by an enormous table with a staircase leading up to the top.

Immediately, the giant female turns toward me.

"Welcome, madam, to my house. You have fortunately arrived just in time for tea; do please join me. I have some refreshments available for you."

I'm sure Blacksoul would've warned us if we were supposed to refuse all hospitality, or something.

I flutter up and see a smaller table set on the large table. there is a cup of tea, a sugar bowl and some cream, two little pastries and a strawberry. I am famished, but I decide to sit down and give my message before I eat.

I tell the Queen of Sorrows what Blacksoul commanded me to. She nods several times before bringing her cup up to the mask of her mouth. I think it's empty, but she pretends to drink.

I have some of the snacks. They smell delicious, but have no flavor at all. They taste almost like sawdust. I'm hungry, though, so it doesn't bother me too much.

"Now that you have given me the information you came here to give me, I feel that it is only polite if you engage in some conversation that does not deal with your official business here. Please, pick a topic. We must converse pleasantly before tea is finished."

Her voice is silky smooth, but there is something underneath, some layer of artifice.

132398

I ask her about the landscape, why it doesn't rain.

"Everything is meant to work in a certain way.

She stands up, pushing back her chair, and waves her free hand as she begins explaining calmly to me.

"I have been criticized in the past by a certain upstart youth and a certain unreliable mystic, but it is because they fail to understand the proper workings of nature and the mind. There are no monsters here. There are no bandits. Everything here is here because it ought to be, and functions according to a precise schedule and order. People come to live in my land because it is orderly and free from danger. Their life is not easy, because my land is dry and harsh, but these same reasons allow life to move forward uninterrupted by unforeseen events. It rains when it is supposed to rain, and the water is enough for those who live here to produce enough for their necessities.

They will never grow rich or fat or build massive cities, but I detest mess and bustle, and any of them are free to leave. A strict, harsh world is a safe world, and an easy life is not a life worth living."

Toward the end of her speech, she almost sounded emotional. Her silky voice had a spark of fire behind it.

Should I keep talking with her, or maybe ask her for a place to sleep or something, or should I just excuse myself and get on my way?

Even though I didn't eat much, and the taste was fairly bad, I don't feel hungry at all, although I'm still tired.

Still kind of dickish, but it's not like we're going to convince her of anything, so no point being rude about it.

Ask her what she thinks about souls.

Also, sleep here for the night. If she wanted you dead, you'd be dead, so she doesn't want you dead, so it's safe to sleep here.

I think about talking more but decide to just leave instead. I rest for a few minutes and then politely excuse myself. The Queen of Sorrows continues to sit at the table and I fly off.

Now I have to go back to Blacksoul, and then I can go meet back up with Spikesby in Morriga's territory.

As I'm flying over, I see some kind of scuffle down below.

The whatever-it-is must have spotted me too. It must be some kind of magical creature, because I can understand it even though it isn't speaking words.

>"You, up there! Please, help me! Please!"

I can hear the Ravians from here as well.

The other one has a lasso around the thing's neck now, and I grip the Adept's head in my foot.

"I need to know what is going on here! I shout, hoping to diffuse the situation maybe.

The creature chokes out a response

>Oh, think nothing of it! Thank you again so much for saving me, but we have to get out of here now. I have failed my Mistress by killing her citizens and by having my body marred. Once she discovers my indiscretion, I will be destroyed. We can escape together, even though I know nothing of the world beyond my Queen's territory. Perhaps we can help one another. The bleeding seems to have stopped. I lean against the monster's side as we begin the long, slow journey out of this wasteland.

"That could have gone better," I say, more to myself than anyone else. I hope Spikesby is faring better.

The Ravians were foolish to resist the Wizard's authority. They shouldn't have even tried to work their stupid plan in the first place. Why did they have to get so upset at me for pointing out the most reasonable solution? They should have just gone somewhere else. So, I guess I should find that river and then just follow it up to the Desert of Ruin? Should I skirt around the desert or go through it? It really is just a matter of how much time I want to take.

Smalltalk sounds good.

"So, I was made by Flails Breaker. He locked me up in this tower and just raped the hell out of me again and again and again and again. It pretty much blew. He made me do that too, now that I think about it. What about Queen of Sorrows, how often did she rape you?"

It's eyes get all big.

>"Oh, that's just awful! You poor, sweet thing! No, I would never want a man to put his... thing in me. That sounds horrible! My task was simple - if any structure or person was too big or the wrong color or something, then I would destroy it with lightning. It was fairly simple... How did you escape?"

"This awesome Snikt named Spikesby totally saved me. He's waiting for me up in Moriga's territory. I'm supposed to meet him there after I go to Blacksoul's"

>"Can I come with you?"
she asks. Her voice sounds weird, like I'm about to shut her down.

I was thinking you could do this to get back to Blacksoul. Then your friend could proceed to Lord of Marvels at its own pace, assuming blacksoul doesn't want another refugee. Lord of Marvels seems like a stand-up guy.

Well getting there with her along might take a bit more time. But Spikesby saved you despite it not being something he had to do. I think you should allow her to follow with you. And ask her name.

As for the path, I would say follow the river and then go across the desert. Your new friend should be able to make a desert crossing without any real problems and Kshaara is dead so her territory should be pretty safe.

"Sure, you can come with me. You said your name was Majestic Thunderstrike, right?"

>Thank you! Thank you so much! Yes, I am Majestic Thunderstrike.

I'm skirting Radia and Meg's territories. I should be coming up to the river soon. I can see the light shining off of Radia's mountain from here too, even though it's really, really far away.

So, should I skirt around the desert, or go through it? I could fly, but Majestic can't, so we would sort of have to deal with whatever is on the ground in the desert.

"Hey, you said you wouldn't want a man to do anything with you. What about a woman?" I ask, just to sort of mess with her.

Probably better for Majestic if you skirt the desert. She seems to have had quite a sheltered life and isn't really equiped to deal with the outside world.

The Sea of Oblivion is still miles away. I don't really want to go up to it.

I also suggest that Blacksoul isn't a bad guy and tell them about the city with the dead Wizard in it where the Ophians live.

I ask how the sister is supposed to get to the top of the glass mountain.

"We used to live in Radia's territory. As long as you prepare yourself before you go, you can easily make it up. If you're a woman, anyway.

There's no way we could make it across the Desert of Ruin. That place is brutal and full of monsters, so that place is out. We'll be fine here, I reckon.

Blacksoul's not a nice guy to us, OK? His territory is pretty barren and rocky and he doesn't actually help anybody ever. There are magical storms, ghosts, and monsters there too because of all of his experiments. It's not a great place to live. Like I said, we'll be fine here."

Mom! that pony has a looooong neck! Look at it!"

I move up close like he wants and apologize for taking so long. He places his burning hand limply across my shoulder. I manage to supress a shudder.

I ask him what he would do if he got his hands on one of the Lady of Sorrows enforcers and why he lets his experiments run around in the countryside.

That dry whisper seeps out from the darkness of his cowl

"I have no interest in such a creature, although I am curious to know why you would ask. The Queen of Sorrows does not share her creations with other Wizards, and we do not exchange our creature with her. She prefers this arrangement. As to my "experiments," I do not have creatures roaming my domain, despite what you may have heard. If there are things living here, it is not because of my actions. I perform my spells, and if they have adverse effects such as drought, acid rain, or mass hallucinations these effects are of no concern to me. I never asked mortals to attempt to live in this land. My work here is more important than any of that."

His fingers momentarily clench against the fabric of my robe.

I ask him what he's hoping to get from the wizards you talked to. They seemed to like doing their own thing.

"My allies understand the seriousness of the situation. We are now prepared to act and capture the spawn."

I ask if there's places in the world that are actually nice places for mortals to live. Most of where you've seen has been either shitty or full of monsters or both. Ask why so few seem to take time out to make things nice for the mortals, so they can gain more adepts. Adepts are good, right?

"I am not concerned with where mortals choose to live and have no interest in their doings. Once the Sea of Oblivion has been eliminated, they will have plenty of choices."

Once again, I feel his nails through my clothes. There is the briefest of pauses before he continues.

"Adepts will come no matter how harsh the landscape. They are useful insofar as I can take things from them that are necessary to my research, but otherwise their actions are of no concern to me."

I decide not to mention Spikesby.

I ask about his origins, if he doesn't mind talking about it.

"Why so full of questions, little one? You seem so full of ideas. Are you thinking about settling down somewhere? Do you think you have acquired a soul? Remember, mortals fear you, and rightly so. There is no place for you among them. I know you will not heed my advice. It is something you will learn in time."

"Experience is the only real teacher," he says in a barely audible whisper, and sighs again.

"Why? What would it accomplish to teach you nothing? You will learn on your own. I have no desire to be constantly interrupted by difficult refugees. You are useful to me: you can stay."

I tell him about Majestic Thunderstrike.

"Her life will not be easy, but with a compassionate companion like yourself, perhaps she will manage. She understands even less of the world than you do."

I ask about the Sea of Oblivion. What would happen if I went into it, what I can do to stop it, what he hopes to accomplish after it is gone,

"Any gifts you possess through magic, such as tirelessness, strength, resistance to damage, would be eliminated. There is very little you can do. I would not venture there if I were in your position. Once the Sea is gone, the world will be restored, it is as simple as that."

Finally, I ask, "Have you lost something to the Sea of Oblivion?"

The change is immediate and terrifying. He lifts me up to his face as if I weighed nothing. I have no time to react or think before he pulls me to his empty cowl. Those two awful pinpoints of light burn with a horrible intensity. I can't look away. Heat washes over me in sickly waves, his diseased breath like the inside of an oven. His voice is no longer quiet, but a horrid, reverberating boom.

"What have I lost? Everything! I have lost everything! The world is consumed with wretched blackness, my compatriots are almost entirely destroyed and what land remains is an insane horrorshow! Whoa whoa whoa. Let's not devote our lives to something so quickly.

And "Anything..." Don't ever say this to a wizard. You're a magical creature, little more than a tool, if you say that he'll probably give you a task of "Go into the sea of oblivion and slit your wrists over an altar" and being a wizard giving this task to a magical creature, you won't have any way of getting out of it.

So yeah. Let's not directly offer anything yet.

Tell him that you're sorry you asked something that upset him. But this is the only world you have ever known and you're curious at what existed before.

Some good news though, he finds the current state of the world to be as he himself put it "an insane horrorshow" so it's quite possible that he actually do care about mortals. It's just that he can't really live with them and the work he is doing here is alot more important to him than making sure that any mortals in his domain has it good.

His bony frame is tense and stiff.

Spikesby Biteface and Isenore have finally made their way to Moriga's castle at long last. The weather has started to turn, and the last several weeks of marching across the broken earth have been increasingly miserable for Isenore.

Spikesby still feels stiff, although his wounds have mostly healed.

He sees Heartsbane's tent as he approaches, and thinks Glory may be waving at him from inside.

There is no sign of Sky, worryingly enough. Spikesby hopes she is OK.

Spikesby goes into the tent and greets Heartsbane and Glory.

"Oh, Spikesby! You poor thing!" Glory shouts, jumping up and running to him, "Let me fix this mess for you. And what is this awful-looking eye?"

She reaches into Heartsbane's pouch and pulls out an intimately familiar item. It begins to shrink in her hand as Spikesby feels his flesh split and reshape itself. Both of his eyes tingle and hurt, and he loses vision where the blurry eyes was. Soon, though, in a matter of a few minutes, he can see just as well as he could before he set out to the desert of ruin.

"I've learned so much," Glory continues,"But I never could have improved without Heartsbane making me."

Isenore sets down her rifle and offers her hand to Heartsbane, and he shakes it quickly.

They introduce one another briefly and he offers her some food an water.

"It took you long enough to get here. It looks like you've had quite a struggle. Hopefully you've left a trail of corpses behind you. In the meanwhile, I've learned some things," Heartsbane begins, turning to Spikesby. He says the same general information that Spikesby learned from Lord of Marvels. "Anyone who goes into the Sea of Oblivion doesn't have contact with their magical aspects anymore. Glory couldn't do anything, I'd just be a man with one arm, you wouldn't be magically sharp or tough anymore. If you want to go, it seems like a way to truly free yourself from the wizards, though. I also suspect that Ryxix is up to something major. I don't know what, but the Desert of Ruin has been unusually safe and quiet. It makes me nervous."

"You might want to go talk to Moriga. I can't go in there, but you will be fine. She's just recently come into the castle again. She travels a lot, so she might know something useful. Hey, where is that bug anyway?"

Heartsbane laughs. It has never been a pleasant laugh, but hearing it again makes Spikesby feel a little more at home.

"I would never go into the Sea of Oblivion, Snikt. What could I do there? I am a cripple. Glory, likewise, would be useless."

Hearsbane rifles through his things for a moment, and then gives Isenore a coat. Glory runs her fingers across it and the color changes from red to green.

"My brother taught me the importance of color coordination," Glory offers.

"I'm not too excited about the thought of going into the Sea of Oblivion," Isenore says. "If the wizard is in, why don't you go ask her what's up? I heard that she messes with ships and junk, but I don't know anything else about her."

Heartsbane continues, "I plan on traveling to Suri. I've told you what I learned. I can wait here until the bug arrives, but I was more concerned with you."

"Please, Ariadne. Look at his eyes." she snorts. "Besides, if he were soulless, he wouldn't ask." He gestures toward Spikesby. "Moriga lets any magical creatures who have gained souls live here if they choose to no longer serve their masters. There is no place for many of them in the outside world, and many are either destroyed by their wizard after what happened to Kshaara, or are no longer comfortable carrying out their orders. It isn't entirely safe here - Moriga is gone for long periods of time. Sometimes we must defend ourselves from creatures sent to destroy us - soulless like we once were. Spikesby asks what Pete is.

"I am all that remains of Arcus Soulfire's first children. He created a species that would build and expand, but would rely on him for guidance and authority. At first, when we were new to the world, things worked as he intended. Eventually, though, the questions we asked were questions he could not answer. We would come up with more efficient ways to accomplish his goals, and did not rely on him for the commonplace problems that he wished for us to come to him for. He became frustrated and angry with us, and annihilated his entire domain in a massive blast of thaumiturgical fire.

I was traded to Moriga in the beginning, and was therefore spared. He constantly asks Moriga to turn me over to him so that nothing remains of his past failures, but she never complies. After keeping me for some time, I convinced her to allow other refugees to remain in her castle as well. Soulfire may seem logical and benevolent, but his heart is spiteful and childish.

Spikesby tells about Ryxix and the potential for danger.

"Even though you are a snikt, I assumed you were bound to another wizard besides Ryxix. We've never seen any of his creatures here. He goes to extraordinary lengths to make sure they don't acquire souls. Are you truly bound to him?

Spikesby informs Pete that he's actually Blacksoul's minion, but was afraid that Ryxix could tell where he is.

"Only Blacksoul can feel your presence, then. That doesn't mean Ryxix isn't planning some form of revenge. I would worry about those close to you that Ryxix may be aware of.

Spikesby asks why Ariadne has such a problem with him.

"Her life has been difficult. She doesn't trust others easily"

>"With good reason"
She chimes in.

Spikesby asks about Sky

"I have never heard of such a creature, and have certainly not seen one here. I can give her a message if she does come, though."

Spikesby asks about the Sea of Oblivion and being forever free of wizards.

"None of us have ever traveled to the Sea of Oblivion. Moriga could command us if she wished, but we willingly carry out the few simple tasks she does ask of us anyway. Please, if you do survive that journey, tell us what happens."

Spikesby doesn't have a message for Moriga, but he tells her she is pretty too.

"Aww. That's awful nice of you, little guy." her tone conveys a sort of patronizing pat on the head.

Spikesby asks about Pete and Ariadne.

She leans back against the edge of the pool and stretches before she begins her story.

"Soulfire graciously granted me one of his first minions a long time ago. When Soulfire got pissy and blew his domain up, he wanted Pete back but I'd taken a shine to the little guy.

I thought he'd get lonely so I had him find me some little maids to keep him company and neaten up the place. I wanted them to wear little outfits but Pete said no."

The smile never leaves her face. Spikesby has no idea if she's being serious or not.

Spikesby asks about the Sea of Oblivion, the Lord of Marvels, and why her castle seems to be falling apart. Shouldn't she be able to fix it pretty much instantly with magic?

"Let me tell you what happened to me during the war. You can't tell, but I'm not one of these newbies likes Soulfire or Breaker. I was around way before the war, but I knew better than to get involved in pissing contests. When the Wizards started murdering each other, I just swam off. Nobody else was really into oceans like me, so I totally avoided the fighting. After a few years I came back and saw all this black shit covering the coastline, and I went down until I found the peninsula. Everybody was chill at that point, so I signed up with the Big Boys. They outclass me by a million percent, though. Any wizard even close to my power got wiped out during the fighting. In other words, I'm small time."

"What about Lord of Marvels? What did he tell you? He didn't tell you he could see the future or some other horseshit like that, did he? He's a fucking loser. He's a young 'un too, but he was around before the war.

I don't know that much about the Sea of Oblivion other than I can't go into it. What he said could totally be true, though. I don't know, we didn't exactly try to negotiate with those guys."
She shrugs.

Spikesby asks if Wizards can tell where their adepts are.

she shrugs again
"Don't know. I can't make adepts. It makes sense, I guess."

Spikesby asks why she's the Ice Queen, and how the other Wizards get their names.

"People say I don't take anything too seriously or something. Who knows? I though it sounded cool. We just pick 'em"

Spikesby says that he thought wizard power corresponded to age. Like, the older you got, the better you got at using magic.

He asks if new wizards still be made or maybe grow stronger, if she could build up a base of power under the ocean if she wanted.

"Well, before the war there were lots of wizards. How strong you are has to do with being old, but some of us are just better or whatever. We all used to be normal people. Whenever a Wizard would die, another one would happen. While the big war was going on, that stopped happening. I'm pretty sure nobody's gotten stronger either. I know I haven't."

What's she think of the other wizards? Are any of them benevolent?

"Blacksoul, Queen of Sorrows, and Meg are the oldest. Marvels, me and Radia are all a lot younger than them, and Ryxix is somewhere in between us and the old guys.

After the fighting had been going on, right before everything got messed up or whatever, Breaker, Flare, and Soulfire showed up. That's why their kinda messed up or whatever. They're all way, way stronger than any new wizard ever was before. I don't know what anybody was before they were wizards, though. You don't really remember your old life too much. It doesn't matter anyway. Your body keeps changing too. Once Kshaara got nailed, Ryxix freaked out and got a lot bigger and more monstery."

Spikesby tells her about the Sea of Oblivion monster and asks her about Blacksoul.

"Well, if stuff starts coming out, I'll just take another vacation. thanks for the heads up though. Blacksoul doesn't trust me at all. He thinks I'm fishy because I was gone when everything happened. He's real logical and serious. He got everybody to stop fighting. I think there's some tension between him and Marvels. Marvels is pretty weak too but he's real clever.

Before the war I didn't hang with Blacksoul. He was top tier and I'm sort of the opposite of that. Well, I was pretty cool before the war, but compared to whose left I'm garbage."

Spikesby asks why she came back in the first place.

Spikesby asks her what she thinks about Flails Breaker and why he's so terrible.

"He's a young 'un, like I said. He showed up while I was swimmin' the seas. He lives on the coast so I chat with him sometimes - I didn't think he was too bad. He treats the people living in his domain pretty good from what I heard." She shrugs.

Spikesby tells her she a cool girl and her name is fitting.

She scratches him under the chin. "Aww. You're such a sweetie."

Spikesby asks Moriga if anyone is trustworthy or at least predictable. He asks what kinds of things the weaker wizards can do and if she's ever gone on adventures to help people out.

"I mean, you know I can't tell you how Wizards are going to treat you. They aren't going to talk to a magical creature like they talk to another Wizard. Blacksoul is real intense and smart. He doesn't trust me so I don't talk to him that much. Childless Meg is crazy. Queen of Sorrows wants everything to be just right but if you keep your pinky up she's not going to do anything bad to you. I already talked about Breaker. uh... Flare just acts like a vain animal kinda. Radia's stuck up and bitchy, Ryxix is fucking psychotic. Uh... Soulfire thinks he's way smarter than he is. I think Marvels is a sneaky fuck. Me and Kshaara were kinda cool, but she's just hangin' out not doing anything these days. Is that more what you meant?"

"I can make creatures, but they're all just animals basically. I can heal things. I can't really mess with people too much. Mess with the weather, uh, other stuff. Pretty much what I want to. I can do all that thaumaturgy crap too. I can't really go on adventures unless they're ocean adventures. When my people have a problem I try to fix it, but I just can't do a lot about most stuff seeing as how I can't go on land. Whatever. I guess they would move if they didn't want to be here."
She shrugs again.

Spikesby thanks her for being so helpful and asks if there is anything he can do for her.

"Nah, that's cool. Thanks. What good would it do me to be an asshole? You shouldn't go around asking Wizards what you can do for them, though. That's some free advice for you right there." She sighs, "You can't enjoy talking to a boring old Wizard like me. You run along and go play with your little friends. they've been waiting outside for you for, like, a month."

She pats him on the head again.

Consider asking for Glory's help: You're becoming more than a mere armed messenger now, so perhaps your body needs to be more versatile as well.

You need hands. Maybe an extra set of arms that wouldn't get in the way of your originals. Glory might not be able to do it all at once, but she might be able to change you so you start growing them yourself, or develop them over time with multiple attempts.

Spikesby asks her why she can't make legs and walk around.

"Some of us can change our shape a little, but it's really a reflection of who we are or whatever. We don't just look like whatever we want. Like I said, Ryxix changed after Kshaara got penetrated by her ophians. Because he turned into a total psycho."

Spikesby tells her that she's the only wizard he's actually wanted to help; what with the whole not being a dick, not stabbing out one of eyes, not trying to eat him, and being a generally awesome person.

Then he hugs her hand. It's very cute.

"Awww. You're gonna make me blush. Stay sweet. come back if you need anything."

Spikesby heads out. Heartsbane has picked up his tent and everyone looks ready to leave.

Spikesby manages to convey a question about masks to Isenore.

"Before the war, we were mostly diplomats and merchants. After the Golden got mostly killed, we tried to convince the Wizards to stop and failed horribly. We cover our faces in shame because of the world's destruction. When everything is fixed, we will take them off again. Some are more serious about it than others."

Spikesby asks Glory about altering his body

"I can fix you, but I can't change you. Ryxix is a much stronger transmuter than I am. Besides, you're adorable just the way you are." She smiles.

Heartsbane clears his throat loudly. "There will be time enough for hugs and kisses when we are swallowed by our fates and lay rotting in the ground. Glory and I are going to Suri. Come with us or stay. Whatever you like."

"I'll stick with you, Spikesby. We can either wait for your other friend or go a leave a message here. I'm down for the Sea or for Suri. Whatever you want."

We have a choice here. We can follow Heartsbane, fight whatever Ryxix is making and likely die trying to protect him and Glory, or we can go to the Sea of Oblivion and cut our ties with the Wizards entirely. We can live in peace, and we'll still have Sky and Isenore for friends.

Hey, I've also been thinking about what Moriga said about why Wizards change shape. I think that their magic comes from their souls. When something happens to make their personality change, their soul changes too; after all in order for Spikesby to develop a soul he needed to behave in a consistent manner. This change in soul is reflected in their bodies. Why are their souls so powerful...?

Spikesby decided to travel to Suri and help Heartsbane. He leaves a message for Sky telling her the plan.

In the Desert of Ruin, a juggernaut trundles across the sand, screaming in pain and rage. It hates its massive, twisted body and only wishes to bring ruin to the one who caused all this. What remains of his shattered psyche remembers how beautiful he used to be - now he is a horror wrought of broken flesh and magical fire. It ignores the tiny shapes rushing forward with it, scurrying around its massive hooves. The BUG said his enemies were in the city. There is nothing left but his insatiable hunger for revenge. He just has to break the city, to make them pay!

Heartsbane and Isenore should find a nice high spot to use their abilities from. Isenore should attempt to shoot the juggernaut's tentacles, to disable them. Then, Sky should fly Spikesby up and drop him on top of the juggernaut. Spikesby should SLICE THE FUCK out of it, and attempt to hit something vital.

Majestic Thunderstrike should build up a charge and let loose on the snikts that are with it. That'll take out a few. She should do this from a safe location, obviously, since it looks like she doesn't have any good close-combat ability. Glory should... assist the Ophians with medical care if possible. Or use some transmutation power to create something that can fight the snikts.

Depends on how fast this thing is, but the basic plan is going to look a bit like:
1: Shoot it in the head.
2: Do not stop.

Start off by having Sky scout for it. Everyone else try to set up defensive positions. Spikesby should hide in the ground so it can pop out as the monster trundles past and stab the shit out of it. Isenore finds a high, protected place for headshootan. I don't know what kind of appropriate magic stuff Heartsbane and Glory can or should do.

Stampy there looks like its underbelly is very poorly defended. Only a few of its tendrils look like they could reach underneath, and even then, only blindly, unless it has extra eyes.

If Spikesby can avoid getting stamped he could climb up and hamstring a few of the creature's legs. The tendons only have to be severed in one place to make the whole damned leg useless, after all. If It loses two legs on the same 'side' its balance will suffer quickly.

Everyone has met up and now approach Suri. The group is undecided on whether or not they should attempt to evacuate the city or kill the enormous monster.

The current plan is for Sky to scout with Spikesby,

Majestic Thunderstrike to attack the beast and snikts directly

Isenore to make her way to the tower and use her most powerful ammunition against the monster

Becase Heartsbane cannot affect the monster and his power has a limited range, he will fight snikts on the street with Glory.

Poor Ria is unaware that any of this is about to come down.

Please select a character to follow, and decide whether attack or evacuation is the plan. There will be a bloody battle either way.

Majestic Thunderstrike is extremely fast and resistant to damage. She has two attacks she can make - she can charge up her lightning to blast a large area, although this requires her to stand still for several seconds, especially in the dry, cloudless weather, or she can fire a short burst of lightning at a single foe from her eyes. She could charge up and then sally out, or just charge!

Once the noncombatants have been secured in nearby buildings, she has the following forces at her disposal.
There are two people with emplaced weapons, 12 militia members, and 3 adepts under her command. Her mouth has been enchanted so she can be understood.

The adepts can enchant melee weapons (long spears and halbards) [excellent idea], or the Ophians can hang back and shoot, but bullets aren't very effective against Snikts.

How should she arm her forces?

She clears her throat and delivers a speech, her clear, high voice ringing through the alley. "This is your city! The wizard attempts to take it from you, but I stand with you, and electric vengeance courses through my veins. I am an unstoppable engine of destruction that will lead you to victory!"

Also see if the adpets can't enchant the ammunition for the emplaced weapons on the wall as well.

Also see if the adepts can't make some magical traps or something. Stuff that will further damage the snikts feet and limit their mobility.

Half with melee, half with ranged. Neither are going to be terribly effective. Set the ranged fighters on the wall and have them start shooting immediately, supported by adepts (after they finish enchanting all weapons).. before this, though, have an adept cast a force field on you.

Meanwhile, charge up and have them open the door. When it finishes opening, unleash your lightning and then charge out and zorch as many enemies as you can. You're fast and fight at range. Stay mobile. Run in between lightning attacks.

And quit faffing about. You want to start hitting them BEFORE they come close to the wall.

These snikts are large and extremely tough, but if I recall correctly they're not quite as fast as Spikesby. If they get into the Ophian ranks, game over.

I would suggest a pike formation to cover the entrenched gun...snakes. Magic bullets firing from the top of the city wall would be best if that's an option, but otherwise I'd go with the spears in about a 2:1 ratio.

Try to get a spotter to let you know if there's a formation incoming it would be worth charging an attack for. If they're simply running up in a disorganized horde, you might be best served picking them off one by one.

Most of the Ophians are armed with enchanted spears. Traps will be almost useless against the extremely agile snikts. Several take rifles and mount the wall. Everyone inside forms up a "v" to funnel the enemies when the charge inside.

Bullets would have to be enchanted individually, and the enchantment would probably be destroyed when they were fired.

Majestic Thunderstrike charges her lightning and when the gates are opened, fires and sallies forth! A mass of advancing snkits are instantly reduced to ash and charred bones, but there are many more. Suddenly, Snikts leap from the sand all around the gate! Who knows how long they had been buried there waiting for the opportunity to devour fleeing refugees! Majestic Thunderstrike feels the power sing in her heart! With sharp hoof and burning bolts of energy she lays waste as the defenders on the wall support her with heavy weapons and rifles!

Glorious battle! Beautiful destruction! She gallops through a field of corpses!

Suddenly, there is an earth-shattering crash! A wave of nauseating energy sweeps across the assembled force. Ashleigh is at the Eastern Gate!

Well, if we do leave, we're going to leave fifteen outclassed militiasnakes fighting off the surviving Snikts. This is true, and bad.

On the other hand, the magical shudder means that the giant monster centerpiece of the entire attack has smashed straight through the wall and is now rampaging through the other side of the city, no doubt slaughtering hundreds of civilians and threatening half a dozen named characters with off-screen deaths. Ponywar is the most powerful PC, and her presence or absence may have a significant effect on the battle.

Soon, it will fully breach the wall! It is so massive that even a fully-charged lightning strike will only hit one point on it's body. Majestic has to think fast, there isn't much time! It stumbles a bit before continuing forward. Apparently there wasn't anything important there. Majestic Thunderstrike retreats. She has enough time to fire, but if she retreats again she'll be at the base of the bloody tower.

Ryxix? No sooner does Thunderstrike think it that his horrible face appears at a distance beyond the city's wall

Majestic Thunderstrike retreats to the tower. Many ophians have retreated here, and one of the adepts instantly marks Majestic Thunderstrike's face. She finds a few of her friends outside the front door.

Control has switched to Spikesby.

Spikesby remembers flying toward the creature when the gout of arcane fire almost incinerated both Sky and himself. Sky has been waiting at the tower, and Spikesby has been fighting Snikts in the city. He knows the situation. He needs a plan. The marks the Adepts placed on him will keep Ryxix from being able to influence him, even if he leaves the wards, the same for his friends. Heartsbane and Glory are nowhere to be found.

"GIVE HER TO ME! YOUR CITY IS IN RUINS! FIRE SPREADS TOWARD YOUR TOWER! GIVE HER TO ME! IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL YOUR WARDS ARE GONE! I AM TOO CLOSE TO BE DENIED! GIVE HER TO ME OR I WILL SLAUGHTER EVERY LIVING THING INSIDE THESE WALLS!"

Redraw the wards? Really? Okay the only idea worse than going out and just fighting Ryxix head-on is trying to redraw the wards. Ok, let me break it down for you. There's snikts everywhere, and it looks like those wards have to be drawn on the outside. That would mean we'd need a guard for the Ophians who are drawing the symbols, which means we'd have to split up the party to frantically try and draw some wards. Ryxix made it clear that he's here for Kshaara, and so with that info in mind maybe it would prudent to gather up the people we can and leave while we still can. If we stay here we're going to die. The city's on fire, redrawing the wards is hard with snikts all about, And Ryxix is closing in fast. I think booking it is the most prudent choice.

We can deal with snikts. We have the warpony and Heartsbane for those. Ophians also seem to be quite decebt at dealing with them where they can't swarm around the ophians. Wards can possibly be drawn on the ground and still have an effect. If not I guess we're gonna have to draw them on the walls of houses or something.

It's weeks of travel of a snikts before they would get out of the desert, going to take even longer with a bunch of refugees without proper supplies for that kind of traveling. Ryxix might forget about the Ophians for long enough to get out of the city and put some distance between them and the city. But then he would be on top of them like a ton of fucking bricks alongside with his snikts.

The only problem is that A) We actually don't have Heartsbane. B) There's a raging fire threatening to take out the wards and the walls. And of course, C) as soon as those wards fall we're gonna be like fish in a barrel. I just don't think we could mobilize enough adepts to draw the wards back quick enough. We'd have to get more than 1 crew to make a difference, and if Ryxix realized what we were doing he's just focus fire on killing us himself, because we'd be outside.

I think the best bet is to evacuate and just leave Ryxix to the city. I mean if we stay it seems like certain doom, and if we run it seems like we might just live. Ryxix wants his girlfriend back. There's at least somewhat of a chance that he'll not come tearing after us, but instead tend to his girlfriend's wounds and maybe try and get some hot snake sex. If we stay here and he gets in, we're fucking dead.

No. 160397 ID: 54af1f

Ok. So our priority needs to be to use everything we have to stop the fire. We've got some magical resources here, we need to use everything we have to stop the fire from overwhelming the wards: blow up buildings to prevent it's spread, magic it out, whatever we can do but we've got to keep that last ward line intact

Ryxix seems totally focused on the tower. He doesn't notice as the Ophians begin to slip away. Majestic Thunderstrike did well in sallying out and slaying the Snikts waiting in ambush, and took a heavy toll on the forces outside. Her gate, directly opposite the one Ryxix entered through, held through the fighting. Traveling carefully in single file, the Ophians slip out of the city unmolested.

There is no sign of Heartsbane or Glory, and their area of the city is far outside the wards and crawling with Ryxix's minions. It seems clear now that the bulk of his forces attacked the north and eastern gates.

Spikesby secretly hopes that everyone is OK before he slips out with the other refugees. The river is only a few hours away and once they cross they will be in Radia's territory. Isenore can't go there at all - she'll be attacked for having her face covered - and Spikesby doesn't really want to run into her again. They'll be fine right across the border, but at the very least Spikesby and Isenore have to break off from the rest of the refugees. Everyone is weary, and many of them are wounded, but because of the measures taken to reinforce the wards and slow down the fire, they should have plenty of time to get to Radia's territory.

The sky is blackened as the city burns behind him, but without Spikesby and his companions, many of the Ophians would be corpses instead of refugees. Even though Ryxix won, that's still something.

Ryxix rages among the smoke and flame, clearly audible even from miles away.

"THIS IS ALL FUTILE! ONCE I REACH THE TOWER ALL OF YOU ARE CORPSES! DO YOU HEAR ME? HEARTSBANE, I KNOW YOU WERE INVOLVED IN THIS SOMEHOW! THERE IS NO WAY THE OPHIANS COULD HAVE STOPPED MY ATTACK ON THEIR OWN! KILL EVERYONE ON THE WAY TO THE TOWER, AND BRING KSHAARA TO ME! BREAK THE WARDS! DO YOU HEAR ME HEARTSBANE? THERE IS NO DENYING YOUR DESTINY! YOU WILL MURDER YOUR FRIENDS WITH YOUR OWN HAND BEFORE I FINALLY GRANT YOU THE AGONY OF DEATH! ALL OF YOU! I WILL KILL ALL OF YOU!"

Sky and Isenore hug the river down to the border of childless Meg's territory, and then head over to Blacksoul's tower. Sky should inform him of Ryxix's actions and Heartsbane's sacrifice and nothing more, wait for him to offer to fix the wings if he even will. He might not, since they did get in a "needless" fight, and asking something of a wizard never seems to be a good idea.

It might be time for Spikesby to finally meet Blacksoul again. There's not much else to do at this point. At any rate, having him and thunderstrike hang back when they get to the tower while sky and isenore check out how Blacksoul is at this time is probably a good move, and if he has an appropriate interest in spikesby...

I think we should head to the Sea of Oblivion, but going to Blacksoul with Spikesby is obviously the wrong thing to do.

Why?

Blacksoul has mentioned a number of times that he wants SOULS. Spikesby has a soul now, and he's under Blacksoul's thrall. Do you really think this is a good idea, walking in and showing the big boss that we have a soul? What if he orders Sky to choke herself to death unless we give up our soul? Sending Sky to talk to Blacksoul isn't a terrible idea, but it's still one I'd recommend against.

For now I suggest Spikesby and Isenore head to the Sea of Oblivion while Sky, Majestic, Llewin and Ria head off with the Ophians to get them set up and offer protection. Maybe Majestic and Sky (ok maybe not Sky... those wings be gone) can scout around for Heartsbane and Glory while the others help out.

Spikesby decides that now more than ever he wants to be away from Wizards. He heads toward the Sea of Oblivion.

Sky decides to go tell Blacksoul what happened and hopefully get her wings back.

Isenore has very little ammunition. She's going to try to find a town or something and then meet up with Spikesby before he enters the sea. Ria recognizes Spikesby! She's missed him so much! She can't be dissuaded from traveling with him at least to the edge of the sea to wait for Isenore.

Majestic Thunderstrike agrees to lead whichever of the Ophians who want to go from Radia's territory into the Lord of Marvels. She should be able to keep them safe.

Meanwhile, in Suri...

K'shaara was left on her own amidst the inferno, wondering exactly what had happened since the attack, but more curious about the origin of the weapons that had wounded her than the whereabouts of her former servants.

Looks like someone geared towards Antimagic assisted the Ophians in taking out K'Shaara.

Maybe Ryxix sint that bad after all, just driven insane by the loss of his love.

And yeah, antimagic does sound like the most probable cause for her stasis.

If Ryxix is hearing voices in his head (i.e. us) then we might just be able to fix him. If anyone needs fixing, its him.

I am fairly sure it would've turned out differently if we had been consistently positive in our suggestions.

Why would we want to fix him? I was thinking more along the lines of driving him to suicide.

Driving him to suicide would mean that there is one less wizard holding back the Wall of Oblivion. Which is obviously a bad thing.
