You open the LS box to find...

goddammit. You retrieve the SINGLE LS cartridge and inject it into your suit. You now have 27 hours of life support left.

The S1 Service Pistol. You know it as well as any other soldier of the empire. It's a fast-firing, fast-reloading handheld railgun that uses two magnetic rails to launch bullets at incredible speeds. Once, you saw one that was overcharged explode as it ignited the very air around it.

It's incredibly easy to use, maintain, and disassemble for parts. In fact, the battery it runs off is built into the ammo clip so that they don't have to be managed separately.

Set up the distress beacon, then take the gun and utility bar. Never know what we might find on the surface of this planet.

You take the utility bar and pistol, attaching them both to the magnetic holster on your waist. They are both retrievable at a moment's notice.

Afterwards, you set up the distress beacon outside.

What kind of message should it broadcast?

Pack up that beacon and find shelter. Ask the computer if the ship's cockpit is a suitable place to stay. If it isn't ask the computer if it knows of suitable shelter nearby. If that comes back negative, panic.

A high-explosive grenade. The thermide inside could start a fire, but disarming and extracting it safely is a tricky, delicate process.

There must be alternate ways of getting heat, but this is always an option.

Let's do a good old fashioned inventory check. Ask the computer what energy sources are available to you. Ask the computer what heat generating equipment you have.

Things are going to get dicey soon.

You take a look at the back of your ship. It appears the primary engine exhaust has a large corrosive chunk taken out of it. Attempting to start it could detonate the ship if pressure were to build.

As for the backup, the maintenance grid has sealed it with a small hatch, protecting it from damage.

>>

Hmm, any way to hook up the backup engine to the internal thermostat like the life support used to be? Don't want to fry either, and manual adjustments will be hard if we have to, say, sleep at some point.

Disconnecting the ship's external communication equipment might prevent mysterious signal from taking over, but do we have another way to call for help?

Aside from the distress beacon, which can only stay out in fair weather, there's no other form of communication than the linked computer-suit broadcaster.

And if the computer knew where the signal came from, it would have said.

You squeeze past the generator a bit to hook the backup engine to the life support's thermostat module. However, as the generator is down, you have to use 1 of your 2 Power Cells to keep it going. It's not meant for this, so you don't know how long it will take to deplete.

A god? There are a scattered few churches in the empire, all dedicated to serving Man first, and his spirit second. You never really gave them much thought, but in a time like this...

You seal up the hatch and deactivate the timer. If the storm is coming, there is nothing that can be done about it now. It's time to buckle down and wait it out.

After a few minutes, the temperature reaches the point of bearable. You take off your helmet.

The visor... they visor stays on. For some reason or another, you feel afraid to take it off... It's been so long since your skin has been exposed to the harsh air. Removing it feels so... unnatural.

Thanks for following so far. I can't believe I made it to 50 screens.

However, I take far too long, so I conscripted my good pal Mr.Q to take over on the art front for me.

Tune in to Part 2's signal soon.
