"Lander it is. There is... at least, a hundred thousand suitable subjects in our pool."

"Send in... someone with decent engineering skill, someone who knows something about living alone in the woods."

"That gives us.... a hundred thousand possibilities."

"Fine. Get some novice that'll need to be constantly monitored. The guys at the Bureau will be pissed."

"That still leaves us on the five digits."

"What do you want from me, a name?"

"Heavens, no. Just pick someone you like from the pool -- or someone you don't, I know I don't care. Browse pictures, check backgrounds, flip a coin, all up to you. Maybe some flat-chested girl?"

"Let's see... We can send her with a weapon-- we can choose from any possible kind of gun or blade around, but we cant send extra ammunition. This girl doesn't have any specific training on record, so I assume she can do basic firearms and blades."

"What else?"

"We can send her with one of the basics -- shovel, axe or saw, pick. We could send her with some specialty kits like an Eden pack, medipack or micro-elec package, but those aren't very useful at an early stage."

"She'll need the bucket."

"She can order it later."

"True. What else?"

"We could send her with a spacer's power tool, but I think only a chainsaw or jackhammer would fit her hand. Besides, they wouldnt run forever."

In addition to this operator's suggestion, you might want to get on using that plank pack on a tree. You might also want to note this planet's strange gravitational phenomenon on leaves and branches.

This being that the branches, for a short duration, stay up and can even support weight.

Not us, that's for sure.
The first order of business is to chop down a tree and collect the lumber. You've going to need the lumber.
Second order of business is to dig a shelter into the side of a dirt cliff and leave a hole that's both wide and deep in front of it.
Third order of business is to create a crude wooden pickaxe, use that to chop up some stone, and use that to create a crude stone pickaxe.
Fourth order of business is to look around for any exposed coal veins and dig them out.

If at any time you see something you can eat then gather or kill it.

You need to get this done by nightfall, because the nocturnal creatures here are the stuff of nightmares.

You're going to need to start working fast, most of the dangerous stuff comes out at night. Try to build a simple shelter along the cliff, then when the sun goes down seal all potential entrances and get ready. Tomorrow we'll work on a more permanent shelter, maybe even gather materials for tools.

we do not have a axe, and the trench shovel seems to be specifically designed to dig only.

we can make a shelter on day zero, but day one will need to include foraging for food. it seems a small outpost is out of order due to lack of tools as well.

if the droppod cant be harvested for anything useable, we may have hit a bottom line. after digging for shelter and crap ores.

Wow wait, so many-- they WHAT-- what is-- oh my-- What was the glorious Reconnaissance Bureau thinking-- GAAAH!

Okay, okay, calm down... Look. Mess hall or not, I can't spend an entire shift trying to figure what i'm supposed to do first. So we'll go one step at a time.

Some say getting some lumber is pretty important; but I cant take down a tree with my own hands. I can spend the [rest of this shift] [salvaging the pod] for things I could use.

By the way, I've got my loadout-- they're in perfect shape. The plankpack is working perfectly, it may have a few hundreds of cubic meters of space available. This spade is kinda small for [digging a shelter], but beats digging by hand. Seeing any good places for that from the satellite? I think I made a crater here.

Case else, well. I can [explore the area], get a better sense of the surroundings. Maybe find a better place for the shelter. And food. I don't get why you insist the night is dangerous, the flora seems pretty earthlike, and so far I haven't met the fauna -- but, you're the Operators...

The forrest a bit east of you seems like a good place for a shelter. Should be some decently dry deadwood there that you can collect to make a fire. Then chop off some decently sturdy and long branches for building an easy wind shelter. As it's only you it won't have to be very big.

For making the shelter just dig down maybe 30 to 40 cm. Fill the bottom with either leaves or pine boughs, then get two Y shaped sticks. Them down at the shortend of the hole, place stick in between them and then stack the longer sturdier branches so that they cover the hole. Get something to cover the sides and then you have a very basic wind shelter.

That should take up most of this day, but it will give you a solid base to work from. Then the next day we can explore and see if there is anything good that edible in the river and stuff.
>>
No. 248438 ID: a5038a

Camping out a few nights shouldn't be a big deal, so you should begin scouting for a decent place to begin building. To reduce the amount of time involved in flattening the ground, I recommend finding somewhere flat. You'll need a landing pad as well as space for the groundwork, remember. This should double as scouting for food, I don't know why the boss thought it would be funny to send you down with only one ration pack.

And don't be too frightened by the public terminal thing. Couldn't possibly be worse than the time Ensign Cadet First Class Blather put you on grotch cage cleaning detail. Plus, you are becoming famous around here. Live through this and you'll have about 130 people here waiting to buy you a drink (and about a dozen who are pissed because they bet big on you dying the first weak).

I think you lot ignore the fact that she hain't got an axe, saw or tools of any kind bar the shovel. Kinda makes chopping down trees or doing woodcrafts a bit tough.

while >>248429 seems right, we may be able to use the dropod's door as a actual door, even if just with its weight. the dropod would need to be salvaged after the shelter is built, anyway. im hoping it wont sink in that water. get to diggin, and make a visible sign in the outside, case intelligent lifeforms exist.

i am hoping that >>248441 is right enought. weasel has already stated that she does not have tools to take out whole trees, so we will have to make due with branches. we should make a fire at night if we cant get the drop pod door. i dont wanna discover a creeper or a skeleton around with no light or fire to face them.

Building a shelter without exploring a bit for a suitable site is foolish. Begin exploring and foraging for food at the same time. Keep a sharp eye out for suitable places to set up.

[Time: Day 0, Afternoon]
... but by the end of the shift, all I manage to dig is five metres or so. The soil is pretty clay-ish, but soft. If I take care, it won't collapse on me.

But the problem is this stone. I reached it pretty quickly. Its.. somewhat loose. Some kind of sedimentary rock. I think I can handle it with hand tools.

The pod is unsalvageable, except for base materials.

I manage to scrounge [seven sheets of metal]; they're postcard-small, but can be made into something else. There's also lots of broken, useless electronics, a plasma cell holding [two units of Energy]. Everything else is wrecked beyond usability.

About the [Outpost], I just know I need somewhere to sleep, I guess. Sooner or later, we'll have to build a [Drop Target] too, how else are you sending the bucket?

I would recommend constructing an outpost in an elevated position, easier to defend. And finding your way back will be easier with navigational lights on top of it. But yes, you have no time for that right now, get underground and seal the door. Keep a low-powered light going if you must.

And for fuck's sake LEAVE A HOLE FOR VENTILATION. You would not believe how many rookies' corpses had to be dug out.

[Time: Day 0, Evening]

Another few hours of work.

Door's ready. Its the right size to cover the entrance.

I dig up a shaft as you requested, roughly three metres in length. Something like an egg hit me in the face when I reached the surface, but otherwise, I'm fine.

The evening isn't particularly cold. The jumpsuit should keep me warm for tonight without any surprises. Yes, I can make an emergency heater if comes to it.

An axe... I can nail some of the sheets together and sharpen to make a blade. But I lack the room for that in here. And it would take another bunch of hours.

I don't remember angering anyone important in my lifetime, actually.

Nah, should be fine. But you should get a fire started. Not only for the heat, but the light, and to keep predators away. It gets really fucking dark out in the woods away from civilisation. [Time: Day 0, Midnight]

... the night's very quiet here. No engines humming in the background at all times.

I use all that sheet metal to fashion a very crude hatchet blade. It might be enough to fall a tree, but I doubt it can be used twice.

I attempt digging some more in here, but after removing another three meters of dirt I stopped. The clay here.. is suitable for building, but not without some kind of structure.

Very little moonlight comes in, so I cant really get anything done. I still can't see how its dangerous outside, I can't hear any wildlife...

After breakfast, go chop down a tree. We need to get started on your house, or a proper pick (do you have any metal left? Might help.) to dig deeper/wider. We could use the wood to make supports for the dirt, instead of for a house... that might prove more efficient.

The lack of fear is probably because it has no references to you. It doesn't know enough about humans to fear humans.

Now lets see, start off by gathering firewood in the forest, get a nice small fire going, make sure the embers don't go out if you let it die down.

After that we can start checking the river for fish and stuff. We're probably going to have to experiment a bit with different roots and stuff to see what's edible and what's not. Do you have any testing kit that can see if you can eat and digest stuff?

Yeah, build the coop. If it's too small to lay eggs it's too small to be a decent meal too. You are going to be there for a while, so might as well raise the damn thing.

Of course, then we need to get to work in the woods. Of course, you need a better tree cutting solution than a one shot improvised axe, unless you plan on living in a hole and not having fire when it gets cold.

Right outside your hole should be good. Don't overdo it with this, just whip something together quickly so we can start scouting those woods.

Then again, if it is a lizard you don't have much use for it. Chickens produce food and feathers (and I imagine you'll want to produce a bow for hunting animals), but if this thing is a... lizard, it won't be quite so useful.

How about this, block it into your hole in the ground for now and close the door. Priorities are to see what food is going to be available to us, and to get a decent scouting of the nearby area done.

[Time: Day 1, Morning]

I salvage enough wire to build a fence around a piece of land under the larger tree, and spend the next few hours building the coop. I think there's a problem in your clever plan.

And yes, its.. kind of a feathered lizard with a beak, or a quadruped bird, its hard to tell. It reminds me of a big feathered newt.

I don't own anything but my wits to judge if something is edible or not, but I can take a few educated guesses. The air here is breathable so far, the 'lizken' has a familiar enough structure, and the grass tastes like grass; therefore, things here should be fit for human consumption. Or, at least, follow familiar rules about what I can eat.

That sums up to not gorging into anything new, and... experimenting stuff until I get sick, I guess.

Ah yes, we may need a covered area rather than a simple fence to hold those things. You may or may not end up getting a breeding plan going with these things, but you want a way to keep them around when you need them. Just finish this up as best you can, doesn't matter if its a small holding pen. For all the time and energy spent here, imagine having to hunt one down every time you need some meat? At least this way you can catch and keep them handy.

I recall the rules for eating unfamiliar things. As long as you take the time to slowly smell, touch, taste, etc you should be fine. It's easy to forget to wait long enough if you're already hungry and you're as far as swallowing bits of it.

Guys, we need to focus. First priority is to get some wood so we can make tools. Second priority is to get some coal so we can make light sources.

If you look behind you on the cliffside, you can see some black patches on the stone; those should be coal deposits. Make your way there, but be sure to chop down at least one tree along the way. From the wood, you can make simple wooden tools like a pick; it'll be crude and won't last terribly long, but you should be able to harvest some coal and stone. You can make torches with some wood and coal, and the stone will make longer-lasting tools once you add some wooden handles.

That should keep you busy for the rest of the day, so be ready to retire to your bunker and enjoy your well-deserved night light!

As for supplies, you need to set a drop target first.

Yknow, orbital drops are pretty complicated. We can't just launch packages at the planet and hope you find them (or we can but aren't going to because that's dumb.) Making a target we can use as a reference is a requirement unless you want us to guess and then hike for hours to pick up every delivery (or days, if we are off by much). I'd suggest you split the log into smaller useable planks, 4X4s should do, but I'm not sure your axe is capable of it. Might as well try, since I really don't think you'll be able to haul the entire log back to your camp.

more specifically, we need a area somewhat clear to prevent the new drop pod from hitting water or crashing at trees.

but enought of that, how is your inventory/plankplak? its time to plan for tomorrow, now you are going to forage for food.

I've already filed a drop pod request for your operative number. I've no idea how long it'll take to get all signs and approvals, but no request, even unofficial, that I've had to deal with in my time here, has taken less that a day. So we've got at least that much. After that all we have to do is file a request for supplies and another one for a spot in the delivery department schedule.

Does anything look like it's artificial? I mean, that's silly, but the absense of animals and the seedlessness is even sillier.

Basically, we don't want to risk destroying the contents of the supply drop by hitting, say, granite, so you need to find and mark another spot where the ground's soft enough to not completely destroy the pod.

One of the most basic of teleportation devices can actually be made using natural materials, but its pretty difficult to get done.

First, we're going to need ourselves a decent base and some nice tools. We'll have to move up from what we have now to stone ones.

Next, we'll need to mine until we find diamond. Those should be near lava. We'll make a pickaxe from that, and then we'll have to make some obsidian with the lava by pouring water on it.

For now, let's worry about getting all that done if we ever want to move on to building the teleportation device.

Not very strong, but still enough to catch one off guard. I had my hunches at first contact, but I wasn't sure of my intuition until now.

Agh! Ow! These little creeps are extremely aggressive! A few chase me off, but are finished killing themselves by the time I reach the dropsite.

How am I supposed to defend myself against them? I can't just throw rocks at the lot.

Ugh, my hair feels like yuck now. At least whatever they're made of isn't corrosive...
At least its over... Don't know how they did that, but it hurts! Now what??

well if that was the smallest creeper we got, it could be interesting to analyze those nests later.

Breaking rock. Hmn.

I cant expand the hole, the clay isn't hard enough. For that, I'd need to stop and do something out of that log. With a bad hatchet. That's doable.

Rock.... a spike and a hammer would do it nicely, actually. Could make those ith the wood...

... flint. Heh. Really could use some to make a few tools... I didnt stumbled upon any nodules yet. You guys saw coal, did you see any flint?

... wait, you had a name for those bug things. You... have you seen those things before? Are those bugs on record?
... I'm starting to agree that whoever sent me here hates me.
>>

well, we called them creepers, but we are REALLY hoping those are as big as they can get and not some larval form. cause otherwise blowing that nest will get bumped up a LOT in the priority list.

Nah, the bugs are new to us, they just reminded us of one of the most terrifying examples of native wildlife we've seen in our entire career. A creature that makes seasoned men break down and cry after an attack, or scream like a little girl after hearing their evil warning hiss.

But this is probably something completely different, so don't worry about it! And we'll keep an eye out for any likely areas for finding flint.
>>
No. 258389 ID: fba40f

>>258373
Their behavior is identical to that of that creature we kept warning you about earlier, the difference being that the creature we were thinking of is the size of a human and explodes with the force of several hand grenades.
>>
No. 258488 ID: a9a46d

>>258389

Several hand grenades? Hardly. My experiments with this creature have concluded that the explosive output the creeper creates is equivalent to at least one small crate of TNT.

Further experimentation with cobblestone, wood, marble, various metallic elements, and even dirt have all led to a similar blast radius report. Which may mean that the internal explosive functions of the creeper are limited despite the force of the explosion.

Above all else, it's recommended that we keep the 'nest' of these possible larval creepers under observation.

But if it were really swarms of this thing, wouldn't the whole terrain be pockmarked with craters?
>>
No. 258498 ID: 7bfbae

>>258497
no, cause they only blow when threatened. it MAY be why no wildlife is near here they all stay the fuck away from the nests. in which case our best bet to find animals is to go exactly away from it.

[Time: Day 1, Sunset]

Yeah, I do need a bath. And food, I didn't eat for over twenty-four hours. But first things first.

It makes no sense to work the tree after the bath, and every other thing you guys asked requires wood. Unfortunately, the hatchet breaks down before I have more than a dozen pieces of timber. I still manage to carve a spike for dislodging stone later.

I find a bit hard to believe a creature as large as the one you mentioned has killing itself as a defense mechanism.... but you're the experts. What else should I expect?

I AM under a tree, sort of. I wasn't aware of how good your readers are. I was really hoping I wouldn't have to cover myself every time I need to wash up.

Let's see... I finally had my meal, so the MRE is gone; tomorrow I'll .. we'll have to figure out food. Ugh.

Well. Inside the plankpack, I beileve there's... one almost spent plasma cell, maybe two of ten charges.
I got a total of fourteen pieces of timber or so from that tree, and those three heavier branches I mentioned before... plus a stake and a wooden mallet. I can only hope those will be enough to work the rock here. Or at least dislodge larger pieces.
And of course, there's eight cubic metres of dirt.

Outside of that, I have three clean changes of underwear... well, undersuit. I still don't know what I'll do about laundry, but there's plenty of water.

Which by the way, tastes potable. Maybe a bit too mineral, but ok.

They don't exactly explode with monster force at that size, even the really big one didn't actually hurt her. Of course, I'm worried about these larger creepers you guys talk about. I can't find them in the xenobiology archives or even with a general search, but if they exist, they sound super dangerous.

But she needs her sleep. What is she going to do, get up an squash them all individually and then go back to sleep? Make a mesh so tight over the chimney that they can't get in? Waking her up isn't going to help, in fact I think letting her sleep till morning is a good idea.
