"I... it should come with job offers and congratulations and I don't know! It's the hardest test in my field, it's just way too... big of a deal to come in some standard paper envelope!"

I ask if the hivemate visitors know about the brainwashing. Vihn says they don't.

The only thing that looked like it would be of interest is a tram station off to the side, but I'd have no idea how to operate it even if it didn't require some kind of password or keycode or some other security.

Vihn directs me back upstairs, and I find Korrili back at the wooden table she didn't quite reach before the predator got her.

An underground escape? Even if we bring the feds down on this place, the scientists might get away with their predator. It'll have to be done carefully.

>I hope you're having a good time?
...I think you actually have to hug her this time, Penn. Intimacy issues aside. How can you not after what you just saw her go though? (Let her go through. Caused her to go through).

Lie to her face. Yeah. You're having a good time.

When you think about it, the predator is the core of the brainwashing. He seems nice though.

Maybe you can resolve this nightmare by teaching the predator (or any other predators) more complex programming. Right now, you don't have the assets to act, so you may as well hit the road.

Also, it's quite obvious that the syndicates can kill whoever they want at this farm with almost no consequences by programming them to accept their executions (EXCEPT the predator who does all the programming), so adopting a kid might be a REALLY good idea right now. Sure, they might get infected with fufa and forced to die slowly while buried alive, but do you honestly think that's better than being raped and beaten to death and brainwashed into outright deciding that it's a holy and wholesome act?

You know that you'll likely have another delusion, this time about Korrili being programmed to let herself be raped to death, if you don't DO SOMETHING about all this.

Give her a hug, tell her she's been a great host, and try not to look so sad. Stay alert to even the smallest ways that you can make this situation better for the time being.
Hopefully eventually you'll be able to help in a substantial way.

Maybe you should try to find Arza and see what he thinks about all this. You haven't had enough experience in the underworld to properly help this hive, at least not without any repercussions. At the moment the best you could do is probably inform an ultrahive about this and hope they take them in. Of course thinking that would go smoothly would be highly idealistic.

Don't pretend to be happy, Penn, you're not good at pretending. Tell her you definitely feel less antsy than before, but you're still a bit stressed out. It's to do with your job, as you said. You're better off than you were, thanks to her suggestion of meditation. Give her a hug.

You could do a double check on the security, here. Say something like "I think you might have fallen asleep for a moment. You were twitching a little, do you have weird dreams?"

If you can get Arza to tell you what your new criminal contact info will be, you could give it to Korrili - tell her to call you if she ever wants to talk about something or needs help. You won't be able to promise her you actually CAN help, but it might be something to make her feel better. In a real way, rather than a mind control way.

Don't want to cause any waves here, those guards are pretty quick on the trigger and nobody here will have your back aside from Arza's name. And he's an enemy, who knows how much weight he actually pulls here but somehow.. I think this is juts the tip of the ice berg of unpleasant things we will be seeing.

Just...play along I guess. If you try to tell her what happened she'll just break and default to going right back down to four square. The only way you could keep her from doing that is tying her up. But it wouldn't accomplish much, she might just go catatonic rather than snap out of it.

So, it's totally fine, you juts zoned out for a little bit, we took a nap and are doing okay, how about we go home and grab some lunch instead of continuing the tour, I imagine you are really hungry at this point anyway.

Think about it this way: even if their methods are staggeringly unethical, they have created an actual cure for depression and who knows how many other mental illnesses. This has a lot of potential legitimate therapeutic uses even if that's probably not what they're researching it for.

I think we've probably nosed around as much as we can, safely. Go check up with Arza and see what is going on.

I'll ask Arza if it's possible, but I just don't think it's going to happen.

"I'm okay. I'm a little peckish, though."

We start walking, giving me time to find words. They don't come right away, but the walk is only so long, so I have to force them out.

"Uh, Korrili..."
>"Yes, Miss Penn?"
"Just Penn, please. Where is this farm? As in, does it have an address?"
>"Oh, it sort of counts like a town, we're called Mount Lain Farms. You can find it on most maps!"
"Thank you. Uh..."
>"What is it?"
"Did you, er, have any dreams while you meditate? Ah - I ask since I think I fell asleep while I was trying to do it myself, and you looked pretty out of it."
>"Oh, well, no, I wasn't asleep, Penn, that's not what meditating is, sorry! I was in such a trance though, I was just recalling the last several weeks and making sure I was doing my best. Oh, dear, you still look so stressed. I'm sorry, that place didn't help you much at all, did it?"
"It must just be for neumono."

Korrili starts slowing down and freezes. Wait, no, she's shaking.

>Hug her
I've... really only hugged one neumono before, and that was Roxie, yesterday, because it was the happiest I'd been in my whole life and after knowing her for years. To do so now is... I'll put both hands on her shoulders again.

"No." What can I even say? "It was nice."
>"Penn.... I really hope you're not lying for my sake. Oh, but geez, if you are... how could you care about me that much? I'm your host, Penn, that's my job!... Um, you're squeezing my shoulders kind of hard."
"Oh - sorry."
>"Oh, no no no, it's fine! I thought it was accidental! If you want to grip them that tight, then squeeze as hard as you want to! It's no trouble on my part, I'll let a guest do whatever they want with me. Especially you, because you're a great person, and I want you to leave here feeling great."

Ho... how can she say that?! I'm not great, she wouldn't have had to go through an extra session of that if I hadn't dragged her along!

Oh, oh no. I have to hug her.

>"Yes! It's so affectionate, and the best with nice people. Even if you're not a hivemate, I wish more guests were like you! I'm glad you said you're doing okay, I just don't know if I could forgive myself if you weren't."

I'm not even hugging affectionately! I'm hugging like I'm trying to break her ribcage and all she's doing is hugging gently back!

And it's going on for way too long! It's awkward! It's an awkwardly long hug and I can practically see her smile behind my head!

How could I possibly, right now, look at her straight in the eyes and tell the truth?

"I've never seen such a great place in my life or on any planet. You're a great person and a great host, Korrili. I'm going to see if I can't leave a contact number or something here, and when I leave, we can stay in contact and you can tell me about any problems you have. >"Ah, hey Penn! Sorry, I was just washing up. You're looking down. Find out anything, and more importantly, any sign you'll be ready to leave soon?"
"...... is it possible to adopt a child from here?"
>"Eh?"
"Don't worry about the reasons yet. I want to know if it's feasible."
>"Yyyy technically probably, but either we're just gonna yank a kid, and believe it or not someone'll notice and that won't go over well, or we gotta go through some channels that aren't here right now. After all our business settles we can see about it if you still like, but trust me, unless you turned into a real cold hearted bitch while I was down, you don't wanna bring a kid with us. Judging from your eyes, you don't wanna bring a kid. Anyway I smell some lunch, then I'm ready whenever. The trip is a few hours longer, so we can catch up on sleep on the ride over."

>Bring a kid
I really do want to be able to help this farm, but bringing a kid to what is probably the overseers of this farm is... it would most likely just make things worse, and this time it really would be my fault.

"I'm ready to go right now, Arza."
>"Oh, that fast? I'll grab some lunch to go for us, then. You wanna come down with?"
"I... no."

I don't think I can handle any long goodbyes from that hive right now. I at least had sort of a goodbye with Korrili. It was more of a goodbye than Roxie got.

I at least follow Arza down to the basement, and remeet him at the hidden floor hatch. He goes in, inputs a keycode, and we walk into a very similar facility as the predator area. It has a similar entrance into a tram station.

>"So did you find out what was going on?"
A predator. It mind controls the hive here into subservience, and others into the hive. The weird, hostile neumono here think they're hivemates even though they're really not."
>"Sounds like they sorta are. Sorta like how a metal rod and a slice of bread are bonded if they're duct taped together. But nevermind that, that makes sense. Let's hop on here, now."

Like I thought, the train required security. Some kind of keycard and hand scan. We sit down, and the train starts moving. It's pitch black outside, so I can't see how fast we're moving. Judging by how quickly and for how long I felt accelleration, though, we must be moving exceptionally fast.

"They beat up the caretakers here."
>"Yeah, I wondered about that. Sometimes it's not so hidden unless actual legal guests are here."
"Why? Is it possible... that caretakers here could get beaten to death, and everyone just finds it fine because of a predator?"
>"Not likely. Those kinds of sadists, Penn, are effectively soldiers. They're conditioned and drugged, to varying degrees, to be especially aggressive. Some of them are bugged, some of them are predator conditioned, some are just on pharmaceutical style drugs. Anyways, they're fucked up. This farm is a breeder farm too, and the farm managers here don't just have them go fuck one another at random. They have the ones they want breeding to set up the next generation. That means they get the meanest, strongest assholes of neumono they've got to go down here and have sex. Some of them just think it's a chore and they're being whore'd out, but most of them think of it like a reward to go have some fun. They're still on duty and have responsibilities though, and that's where it all wraps around. Killing a farm member goes too far, and they'll have to answer to their commanders. The soldiers sent here display both profound fighting abilities and knowing their bounds. So don't worry about Korrili's life. Just her skin."
"You sound like this is just... expected."
>"It basically is. By the way, I'm going to give you a nice little piece of tech when we're there. It's like a PDA that collects data you gather in public areas, and lesser information in private. It can tell the difference because they're made to be inside specific underground bases. If you ever take one out of its designated area, it corrupts its data in about 220 nanoseconds, and then explodes from the inside. Which is why I didn't give you one for the farm. Anyways, it can be integrated in certain models of goggles or glasses to augment reality and give you directions to facilities and show people's names and all that good stuff so you don't have to deal with the awkward scenario of forgetting a name. Oh, your contacts don't work with it. So you've got to get some eyewear. It can be clear if you like. My point is is that you've got to get a new outfit. You dressed fine for getting on a 1 AM train and looking like your grandmother."
".... my grandmother was a good person, Arza."
>"Your grandmother was nothing short of a saint and goodness given flesh, Penn, but that's not who we're going to introduce ourselves as. Oh, by the way, you should take your contacts off once we stretch our limbs out of the train. We're going right in to see Vanski. Anyway, I have a catalogue here of standard issue outfits we can get you right on arrival."

Get a lightweight coat with a pocket for the PDA. Something easy to throw away if the PDA gets exploded on your person and sets the coat on fire. Stay wary of any tech you're given. Ok Penn, so I would normally suggest dressing like a professional... except you're a computers professional, so that's not so much of a thing. You don't want to look like you're trying too hard, over-formality will make you seem nervous. Besides, you'll be joining a criminal organization: one of the benefits is that people care more for what you can do than what you look like. So long as you're not disrespecting anyone with your appearance you're fine.

Also you'll be working with aliens so who knows what sartorial expectations and interpretations they'll have. Some of them still barely wear clothes at all! So my advice is to go for comfort and utility. Something that says "I'm prepared to get to work". Everyone respects that.

So, first suggestion: pockets. Big ones, that can hold PDAs and tablets and phones and information sheets and all the junk you might need. Cargo shorts should serve you well, and are baggy enough to obscure your legs if that's something important to you? I don't know. Up top, wear something lab-coat-esque, but keep in mind you're not working with beakers full of chemicals or anything so something less restrictive might be better. Same reasoning goes for shorts or pants instead of a skirt. Finally, you want to wear gloves to improve your grip and stop fuzz getting into anything delicate. And it all should be made with some fabric that doesn't build up static. You probably have smart clothes by now so get something that has a computer built in, but only if you feel you can sweep any such thing for bugs and hidden programs. If you can't, either learn how or make a helper AI to do it for you. Making your own basic little assistant AI might be a good idea anyway, someone to watch your back for you. Maybe use one you made previously, I assume a student in your field had a project to cook something up at some point.

Also tell Arza you did try take your contacts off but you threw up.

>eyewear
Penn needs prescription eyewear, so we can't go with a monogoggle or anything that doesn't cover both eyes.

We're supposed to be showing off our scary eyes, so it can't be sunglass tinted.

You're an AI specialist, so it would be cool if you got something you could load an AI on. ...except there's a CAI where you're going. The only way it wouldn't get hacked was if network access were impossible. It would have to be an entirely closed system.

Contrary to the more hardware obvious designs I'm seeing, I'd point out the coolest tech glasses have the tech hidden.

>clothes
Don't go for a dress or skirt, you might need to move on this. Needs to be able to conceal stuff in your clothes. A jacket or labcoat would be useful for further carrying space, letting you conceal stuff under it, and discarding when you need to move.

Our eyes make us look like old time Belenosian nobility, right? We should play to that. Our clothes should be a little too nicely cut, fancier patterning. Not the grunge hacker look- inject some ego. We need to look like the scary IT expert an emporer would have employed.
>>
No. 645339 ID: dbaade

On the topic of whatever glasses that will be used, having a closed system AI loaded on might be a good idea. I'd also recommend programming it to be able to read your pupil's motion as registered commands. Since your eyes are unique, I imagine that would also give it an additional level of security.

It should probably only be able to be used/interfaced if its being worn by you (triggered by it recognizing your unique eyes), and could then accept voice commands. No radio or other electronic communications, however.
>>
No. 645344 ID: 88960e

Crazy eyeballs security is a pretty good idea, but the enemy has access to a fufa, which means a shapeshifter. That gives them at least one way around biometrics. (Maybe. Depends on how complex the structure is and what we measure ). We should use at least two-step authentication. Eye scan and something else. And only one should be obvious, so anyone trying to get in assumes there's only one authentication.

Does Arza have access to your own degree work or projects? An AI you've designed or customized yourself would be the most trustworthy, and I'm not sure you have time to build from scratch. Unless you want to pull out a laptop and get coding on the way.

I would like to point out that had better be a hard, physical embedding. If there's wireless communication between our pda and glasses-display, it will be hacked by the CAI. The only data security is no access.

>clothes
I'd favor kind smaller glasses than we currently have. Rectangles, with slightly rounded edges. So can angle our head to look over them and look all creepy and condescending with the wild no contact eyes.

Not super-small little librarian glasses, those would look silly. But we have a literally wide-eyed innocent look with our current huge circles. Gotta get smaller than that.

Can we get smart-clothes? Be fitting for an AI developer, or the vaguely creepy supervillian vibe, if we had lines or patterns on the fabric that slowly moved and writhed. If we ostensibly keyed them to mood, we could also give people false tells, or manipulate assumptions. (And when we have to sneak or run- all the theatrics go dead. Maybe shift to active camo mode).

From what I know, Fufa cells only 'mimic' appearance, not actual purpose. Its why a Fufa won't show up with a skeleton (despite the fact something of the size we saw in polo quest would likely collapse without a dense internal structure to anchor it, which would have shown up...).

Actually, retina scans should reveal a Fufa immediately. I don't think they could mimic the jelly inside the actual eye, so any decent software programmed should be able to pick up immediately on the difference/lack of refraction.

I look through the catalogue while I talk. It looks like the AI can be modified within parameters. I can add security to it using my eyes, passwords, and that kind of stuff.

"You said some of those visitor neumono were, uh, bugged? What did you mean?"
>"Like the bugs you saw in last night corpses, cept without the fufa. We've had some success with just those, you know! Not perfect, though, they're a bit.... buggy."
"Don't. Please don't make jokes about that, Arza. Is the integrated AI wired directly into eyewear?"
>"Oh good gods it's wired, a wireless one could get hacked in no time. Vanski has a CAI, you know."
"Wireless is what I was afraid of!"
>"Well, yes, even thinner glasses tend to have a wire plug in the back of the frame.

The catalogue also contains smart clothes apparently, ones that can also have AI integrated into them. Some come with cameras and other gear. Although it notes that modifying the visuals of these clothes aren't allowed, since they're basically supposed to tell others that you're equipped with cameras.

>How do you wear shoes?
And the catalogue, since it does cater to belenos in areas, does include our shoes. It mostly just has a cavity in the back to make room for our claw, and the back of the shoe itself can either be zipped or laced down so that we can get the claw in there in the first place.

"And, um... I'm supposed to be showing off my eyes, right? So I can't do tinted?"
>"There's some glasses in there that can swap between tinted and clear."

I'll keep looking at this catalogue for awhile. It's a long trip.

We're working with criminals. Illegal clothing mods are the least of our problems.

Now, illicit recordings we might look bad, but that's pretty much standard practice for the paranoid or overly cautious.

>There's some glasses in there that can swap between tinted and clear
That seems reasonable. On the off chance you end up in a bright area, or somehow around normal people and want to hide your very distinctive and memorable eyes.

Glasses that can tint seem like a good idea. I also still recommend having lots of big pockets and putting stuff in them. >"Nope. Vanski just is in the same network that uses it."
"Okay. By the way, I don't have any of my projects or AI with me."
>"I do. I brought Orix, with last week's memory. It will work with the catalogue's frames. I'll lend you a laptop."

That's good. Orix is a multi functional AI I made that can figure out and be used in any device that uses the appropriate platform. It's pseudo-sentient, and the closest friend I've had besides Roxie.

>Illegal clothing mods are the least of our problems.
Well if I take a picture somewhere I shouldn't, it might be the most of my problems.

Since it's a long trip, I spend it making sure that no one, Arza or otherwise, tampered with Orix. That, and doing what I can to prep Orix in working with the framework.

It takes a couple of hours to be sure, but the AI base that was used included a tamper-evident protocol. It was actually intended to prevent student plagiarism, but it works well here.

Mostly, it's just nice hearing Orix run through diagnostics again.

I've also decided between two outfits that I'll have to choose between when I get there.

B is way more practical. Skirt and lack of pockets does not help us here.

I'd go for rectangular glasses instead of the visor, though. And deffo need boots in case you have to run through debris or horrible science goo.

Maybe upgrade the shirt. Something with a little bit of a better cut, and less a $5-T.

...make sure you've got a multitool in at least one of the pockets.

I say B, but change the computer glove thing for something a little more subtle, and change the glasses for something less retro-futurist and more understated. Maybe give the jacket a fur collar to spice it up a bit and fit with your existing style. Perhaps different colors, too, for the shirt and pants.

How good are you with computer security in general, Penn? And while you're asking questions, inquire as to whether you'll have internet access. Obviously you'll be restricted in what you can send out, but will you be able to keep up with all the tech journals and the latest demos and news and so on? Also, how will communication work? Presumably there'll be people besides you and Arza for you to interact with.

It doesn't appear to say anything about that kind of thing. I can modify the AI that controls the clothes, but I couldn't make anything bulletproof.

I end up falling asleep after I do enough work on Orix. The rapid deceleration wakes me up. My heart is racing, only from terrible dreams. The anticipation is only preventing it from slowing back down.

They have had the unfortunate coincidence of preferring habitats that are convenient to dump pollution into, something that humans are barely starting to crack down on these years. It would be easy to leverage these creature's ire into criminal allies.

This area is inhabited by the Silhouette Empire. They are less affectionately known as neo-imperialists. They will leap on any sort of trans-organism advances, and consider people and themselves little more than arbitrary chemical reactions whos only redeeming quality is the desire to become something more.

They have hunted me before, and some of them have the audacity to look at me with adoration and idolship. They are convinced I am capable of great power, and have many lawyers on Belenos that fought for legal rights to study and constrain me more forcibly, although they did not use their own banner to do so. Despite attempts at keeping me more or less a secret, they know exactly who and what I am. Specifically, they are interested in me as a body and person more than my eyes, and so they continued hunting for me even after my grandmother risked her life's reputation by making lies on my behalf.

>"- are on thin ice. One slip up, and this could come crashing down on us. We will not help you with your dilemma, and we are remaining close to the escape routes."
>"Absolute nonsense. Do you know how much of my hand I had to tip to bug that hive? I am even conspiring to bring Polo right over us for those nature lovers." That's a salikai voice. A tired one. Oriz displays the name Vanski has he talks.
>"You're only able to because of the Supernova's help. It's a big risk to them as well. Does your thinned hive know of their involvement in this?" an Empire belenosian says.
>"No. They'll think Polo coming here was all me, and think of me as manic on top of it. I had just ranted to them last week about how I wished for nothing to do with Polo unless she was handed to me wrapped up in bugs and sealant. Which, honestly, I expect to be done. It can't be any harder than pulling the strings needed to get her out here in the first place."
>"Don't tell us you expect anything! We hardly have middle management capabilities in Polo's own ultrahive. The Tree's upper command will be on high alert if their precious war hero is brought out on a mission controlled by the Coalition. If she so much as gets a papercut in the wrong spot, the whole planet will shove daggers over where she was supposed to go. In this case, right over us."
>"We'll talk about this later. We have visitors."

Arza and I reach the voices.

Apparently Polo is alive. She put a crack in this place by sheer chance and circumstance, and I was thinking I would have to wedge it open myself.

Even with this out-of-body mentality, I still value my feelings, which are expectedly less than ideal at the moment. I can feel them outside of me, but they're no less important than a family member would be. I can isolate my feelings as well. There's a hope to get out of this alive. A hope to get out of this without jail time. Alongside that, there's a wish to help those who have been subjected to these people. Myself, Korrili and Roxie are merely three people in a countless pool of people who have suffered at least as much. Yet those people generally deserve dignity as much as us three.

>"It is nice to see you again, Arza Fletch." Vanski says. "Your CAI is doing well."
>"Thank you, but you know I'd like to check that in person."
>"Are you going to tell us about your pet project, here?" an odd, lizard like thing clicks the words out, and a speaker translates it into something useful. "More importantly, why we should tru-"
>"Clamp your face, you half uplifted ingrate." says that Belenosian from the S.E. Do you even know who that is?"
>"Uh, what?" the lizard gawks at me, proving it can read its own goggles, which may also to serve keeping its eye's light intake low.

Over the course of 30 hours, my original ambitions were put on hold. Apparently these people can find out my normal and born identity just by using these utility eyepieces. This database, safeguards or not, is a ridiculously dangerous thing to make virtually public here. Regardless of that, it would be foolish to think that if I do some AI work and favors for Arza, I will be allowed to walk out of Vanski's lab, take a bus back to Roxie's dorm, and have a grand reunion happily ever after.

At least, not so long as these people are capable of preventing me from doing so.

To say that underworld politics are not my strong suit is an understatement. However, by some combination of learning to play that game and leveraging what AI skills I do have, I have a newfound, overly ambitious goal to spin my presence with these enormous criminal factions, and make it so that they cannot stop me from getting back to my original pipe dream of leading a staggeringly average life.

Allegedly, my genetical predecessor did at least as much.

You uh...

You look kinda cute and kinda creepy without the contacts. It's a good style.

Good luck, kid. Find your path, you have the skill and potential to crack this entire facility open.

I'd be worried about the guy in the chair not having a listed name, but it appears that he cannot be matched to anything. He is, quite likely, a person who has had their appearance altered to hide themselves from reality.

I'm liking the look of Rekter, gotta say. While the other two look to be the typical ambitious Salikai, his appearance suggests a calmer demeanor, and that he's fine where he is. Which makes sense, he's essentially in charge of OPA-8B.
That Kurrinki looks unsatisfied to hold a similar position is curious, but not important. Salikai have their own complicated forms of logic.
>Biological Reincarnation of the Sapphire Emperor
(Spoilered because spoiler ending) I, uh, hm. That's... An interesting way of putting it. Emperor, not empire? Like, wasn't he a Jetal? Also, crazier than the Salikai?

Yes, emperor, not empire. She's the reincarnation of an individual, not a government. Said government wasn't called the Sapphire Empire, anyways.

And Sapphire wasn't born a jetal. He just used his wealth and power to get himself uploaded to a jetal core to make himself nigh-invincible. He started out organic, at some point.

Relative craziness I'll leave be.
