Err. I guess these guys aren't bandits after all. Or maybe they are but they're more interested in getting directions than robbing you. That was almost a very unfortunate misunderstanding. Well, I suppose you'll have to use your survival skills to get out of this mess. You know how to hunt, right?

>If these twisting woods be the work of demonkind, perhaps your companion can sense it. Take charge of this band and lead them through the woods, for the only way out... is deeper in!

..So it seems. I will rescue this collection of vagabonds from the woods, and uncover what is behind this debauchery!

>here's a chance your demon can prove her usefulness. use her powers to break through the power of the forest and get us out.

>If this is a daemon trick, i doubt your servant will be unable to at least provide /some/ amount of help.

I turn to my demon-servant, who stares curiously at the scene before her.

"DEMON!" I announce. She starts at my sudden voice. "HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO PROVE YOUR VALUE! IS IT TRUE WHAT THEY SAY? IS THERE SOMETHING UNNATURAL ABOUT THIS PLACE? USE YOUR ABILITIES TO FREE US AT ONCE!"

She stares at me for a moment, nervously, "I mean.. I don't.. I don't know if I can do anything to.. to break the spell.. There's definitely someone here though.. I can sort of feel them.. You know?"

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CANNOT DO ANYTHING TO BREAK THE SPELL?! DO YOU NOT POSSESS DEMONIC POWERS?!"

She stares at the ground, ashamed, "I..I'm sorry.. I don't really.. I never really finished learning..."

This.. This cannot be.. Could we truly be trapped here?

>BEGIN CHOPPING TREES.

I begin hacking at the trees around me, much to the surprise of my companions. However, they soon begin doing their part, cutting down thinner foliage and brush.

"So.." One of the men begins, "So the plan is to just.. Just destroy the forest? Of course! Why didn't we think of that!"

And so it goes. We cut down trees, brush, flowers, anything in our path, for quite some time, before..

"STOP! STOP IT! STOP IT!!" A high voice yells, I turn to see what appears to be a Druid, very upset, followed closely by a fairy, which tugs desperately on the dryad's arm to no avail.

"Stop killing them! What did they ever do to you!? They're just innocent plants!"

The fairy glances to us fearfully, "S-Sati! Just leave it! We can't get seen like this!! We can't beat all of them! And look at that guy! He caught that little girl! We can't take these guys, Sati!!"

It seems it was quite fortunate that I came up with such a well thought out plan, of destroying the trees. It seems the orchestrator duo of the forest have shown themselves at last. A dryad and a fairy. The reactions from the bandits are mixed. Some look on with curiosity, some with fear, and some with anger. They aren't actually demonic. Mere monsters.. Beasts.

Ask the girl why she would ever leave four warriors with axes stranded in the middle of a forest if she didn't want a new four-lane freeway. Or a fire.

Just barter for safe passage. Namely, THEIR safe passage. You might need supplies against your next raid.

Wonder aloud how your brother is doing.

We travel for some time before reaching the end of the forest, and after traveling for even more of a time, we come to a halt as we reach a wide river. I turn to my guide, who has also come to a confused halt.

"I dunno.. I know this is the way. We came this way and crossed here.. I can sense.. us, I guess. I didn't even know we passed a river.. I wonder how!" Useless, as always. Damned demon!

It has become apparent that we are left with little choice here. We can either attempt to cross the river here, or travel alongside it until we find a lighter area where we can pass easier. Night is also upon us. My new compatriots look worried at the idea of crossing the deep, high current river here.

>Can you defeat the river and make it get out of your way? We are in lands inhabited by monsters and demons, this may not be an ordinary river and therefore there may be extraordinary solutions to this problem.

I splash the river about a bit. Sadly, it is simple water. Nary a sentient river to be seen.

>Dig around the river to lighten the force of the water flow per square inch, reinforce your path with a bridge.

Alas! We've no shovels! I propose to my companions, that we could simply dig with our hands, but for some reason, they are unenthusiastic about the idea!!

>grab a tree and lay it across the river as a bridge.

A clever plan! But we have already traveled too far from the forest, and there are no trees nearby! The river continues to churn. I inform my companions of this clever idea, and they agree that it would have been suitable. The druid sweats a bit.

"Uh, Mister Sebastian." One of my new companions beckons my attention.

"YES MY DEAR COMRADE?"

"Before we headed your way, our group crossed this river by way of bridge. Through a town."

"WONDERFUL! IN WHICH DIRECTION DOES THIS TOWN LIE" I give him a firm pat on the back, he coughs a bit.

"Um.. West, sir. But you see, sir, this town isn't the friendliest sort, y'know? We were fine passin' through earlier.. but a guy like you? A band a crusaders might not find it as easy."

Hmmm.. It seems with further deliberation we have gained more options. This town sounds like it would be difficult to pass through peacefully as a man of God.. But perhaps that is just what they need.. The decision lingers still

After following alongside the river for some time we reach a large shoddy looking town. The buildings around us are missing several windows and some even doors. Night has fallen upon us and clouds gather overhead.

"We're here, sir. Looks like just in time too. A bit o' rain headin' our way I reckon! I know an inn in town, maybe we could shack up for the night!" My tossle-headed compatriot says jovially. I am sure the lowlife population of this town would be thrilled to see a crusader such as I, and welcome me to stay at the inn, but I am unsure how thrilled they would be at the sight of two monsters and a ferocious demon..

now there are no distractions. remember while the other end of your weapon does not have a blade, a pole can still hurt if you get smacked with it.

This is not a duel, this is a fight for your life. The leader's muscles are a fraction of your own and he's experienced at this.

Grab his mace and wrestle for it, and while he's distracted use your leg to sweep his leg off-balance. Remember, you are the heavier opponent, so concentrate on your center of balance and focus on pushing this guy to the ground.

>smack him with other end of weapon

I drop back, swinging the blunt end of my weapon toward the skull wearing cultist! But he raises his arms, blocking the blow, but still feeling the impact. He slides back a bit, staring me down.

I attempt to do so, but as my leg begins to sweep, he jumps back, leaving his weapon with me!

"I know better than to battle you in a test of strength, Sebastian."

This man.. he knows of me!.. This is a dangerous encounter indeed!.. I have only one option!

I move to approach quickly, but am blocked by yet more cultists.

The leader yells at me, "The old one two, eh Sebastian!? I won't forget this!!" With that, the leader leaps out a window as I finish my current attackers.

"COWARD!"

I rush to the window..

But there is no sign of the cultist. He has escaped.
The cultists I did not kill are rising to their feet! They take but a moment to realize their situation, and begin toward the exits, keen on making their escape! Able to reach only one in time, I must choose who to pursue quickly!

Knock him out, then find as many cultists as you can. Kill if they are on the verge of escaping, capture alive if you have the advantage.

Carry them all with your PARAGON OF STRENGTH feat back to your squad, where they may be interrogated by professional torturers aided by magical experts.

"Ahh! Answers to what?!"

"WHY DID YOU ATTACK ME?!"

"Because you're a crusader!! B..Boss said you were special! Had to be.. Gotten rid of!"

"YOUR BOSS?! WHO IS HE?! TELL ME!!"

Tell him that you're aware that (A) the demons are fools that will do the bidding of greater demons without even realizing that they're blindly following orders, and (B) the crusades are indeed an invasion and may result in permanent residence by the church's forces, but that (c) if this is an invasion by the church, then it is indeed a conquest featuring a strong cast of champions; so what.

But don't expect to fight an experienced warrior in his prime for the "crime" of visiting a random town to purchase supplies, and get away with it.

Take the cultist, he's willing to talk.

No! Soon, my dog of war!

>Which invasion? The foul demonic one? The most holy one sanctioned by God Himself? One organised by a third party intent on profiting from the conflict between the Church and demons?

"B-Both! All three! I don't actually know about the third one, is there a third party?!"

>Wait. Is he saying that they're undercover crusaders?

"If I am, will you let me go?"

I think that's my answer.

"LISTEN, WRETCH! I AM AWARE THAT THE DEMONS ARE FOOLS, WHO WILL DO THE BIDDING OF GREATER DEMONS, UNAWARE THEY ARE BLINDLY FOLLOWING ORDERS. AND THE CRUSADES ARE INDEED AN INVASION, DUE TO YOUR OWN COUNTRIES INABILITY TO WORK TOGETHER TO SAVE THEIR OWN LIVES!! THERE MAY VERY WELL BE, A PERMANENT HOUSING MADE FOR THE MEN OF THE CHURCH, TO STAVE OFF DEMONIC SCUM IN THE FUTURE!!"

He is quiet for awhile.

"The.. But the bulk of the demons haven't done anything wrong..! They're being tricked into coming here, and are being slaughtered because of it! We have to.. we have to stop the demonic invasion.. for their own good."

Hmmm.... That WOULD go along with what that demon child was saying..
