((Previous thread here: http://www.tgchan.org/kusaba/quest/res/92575.html until it is archived.))

Good evening. It seems we are going to be spending some time together, Legion.

In case you've forgotten, we have been tasked by the mysterious spider Anansi to retrieve a singing sword from a dragon known as Jerasp. In return, he would tell us the abilities that lie within the Cane, as he did with this Hat.

The Hat:

+ The Hat may be used as a storage device for anything that could fit into the brim. The storage is infinite, and when reaching inside, you will always find what you are looking for, unless your terms are vague, like 'what I need to solve this'.
++As a collorary to this power, turning the hat inside out will dump all the contents of its storage. You can will the items to be expelled at normal speed or very, very high speed when commiting to the action.
++Things placed inside the hat are frozen in time, so living creatures, food, time-sensitive objects, and the like will last indefinitely.

+You may reach through the hat, and out into real space wherever you can see. This is only limited by the acuity of your own sight, but only one such bridge may be made. In other words, you may not put both arms into the hat and have them pop up in different locations.
++Velocity is maintained between points using this power. Speedy thing goes in hat, speedy thing comes out hat.
++Objects pulled back out may either be placed into storage or retrieved immediately. Living tissue is locked in place if this power is used on, say, an arm. The same goes for anything pulled partially through.

+When you place the hat on the head of another creature, whether alive, dead, or in between, besides yourself, you may choose to teleport it forcefully as far as you like within sight.
++You may, at the expense of a great deal of your own energy, decide to only teleport the head.
++Creatures that do not have heads are not affected by this power.
++You must be holding the hat for this to work. The hat does not teleport along with the target.

+When wearing the hat, if you tip the hat in a direction, you will instantly teleport a distance relative to the distance the hat was tipped. This power may be deactivated and reactivated with an application of will.
++Be forewarned, this is the only power that you can use that can target outside of your range of vision! It is also the only power of the hat that can kill you!
++Looking up allows you to teleport up, lookong down allows you to teleport down. You do not teleport where you are looking, however.

The Cane:

+When spun by the head, the length bursts into fire. This stops when the cane stops.

It has been several hours since Anansi left, leaving me to my task. He has stated there is no time limit, and that he is willing to wait as long as it takes. He warns, however, that the dragon prefers gold over objects, and will likely sell it very soon. At which point my task becomes much, much harder.

So, Legion. What is your reccomended course of action for the moment?
>>
No. 93774 ID: a64482

Do you have anything spiky? I think it's imperative that we find out if spikes ejected at high speed from the hat come out at the proper angle for maximum damage of an enemy. For obvious reasons.
>>
No. 93775 ID: a64482

>>93774
Also, I realizing I'm probably focusing too much on a single aspect of the hat's use, but how fast are we talking here? Could you use the hat as a source of propulsion if it were filled with, say, a great quantity of water or sand? Can those things even be placed in the hat?
>>
No. 93777 ID: a64482

Also. Tap the ground with the cane.

I tap it once. For a moment, nothing happens, but then the earth shakes slightly around me. I am untouched.

>>93774
An interesting idea! I remove all objects from the hat, inserting my dagger as the lone occupant. I turn to face a tree and flip the hat inside out. barely as soon as the effect occurs, I hear it thud into the tree loudly. I approach and...
Dear god.
That is fast.
It's in so far, I can see the back tip of the handle and that is all. Incredible.

>>93775

I can place water in the hat, but it turns to mist upon being ejected. Even after placing it underwater for a few moments in a fast river, all I manage to do is create a short-lived but very thick fog.

As for sand, a similar effect would probably happen.

...How about catching light in the hat? It's not like there is a dearth of it, and if you stored enough, you could have your hat serve as a brilliant sun for a brief moment.

...Or the light will be redirected as a giant beam, potentially holding a great deal of heat/radiation.

...Or, if directed in a manner similar enough to a laser, it could forcibly still objects (read: their atomic structure) by forcing them to emit the photons they are bombarded with omni-directionally (atoms hit by lasers can be made to do this) RAPIDLY cooling the target by several HUNDRED degrees. Fast enough that most things would explosively shatter from the temperature change. This happening at the same time they temporarily become a blinding nexus of light.

You could use the sun's light as a freeze ray.

Let me rephrase that.

YOU COULD FREEZE THINGS WITH SUNLIGHT FROM A HAT.
>>

>>93785
I think I love you.

New idea. Poke the tree with the cane, to see if it rapidly ages. Also, try hitting it with the cane, but be careful not to damage it.

What happens if you spin the cane by it's center, like a propeller?
>>
No. 93799 ID: 6faa8c

>>93785
Unfortunately, things ejected from the hat cannot be directed. I can 'aim' a single object, but... something nonsolid or nebulous like light or water will only blast out. Each launching has, however, had a small flash of light with it. This suggests that I have been capturing small amounts of light the whole time, and the sound, a solid whumpf, leads me to believe I've been catching air as well.

>>93787
The aging effect was on the amulet. I poke the tree... and nothing occurs. I simply point at it, to no avail either.
I spin the cane as suggested, and the fire erupts... but does not harm me!

Oh wait, there is one time I would think of doing it. From a distance, using the hat. Against an army or something. Or a city.

Try spinning the cane then hitting a tree with it while it's on fire.

>>93817
I begin spinning the cane, and while it flames, I strike the tree. I passes through as if the tree is not there, blackening whatever it touches. Then the blackened bark and wood puffs into the air as ash.

Incredible... But the spinning and strike takes a long time to pull off. It might not work well in combat.

We're sort if wasting time here. We need to decide how to get the sword. The only ways I could think of to get it is either robbing people/stuff/things in order to get enough money, put on a show for people so they'll give you money, or go directly to the dragon and hope to convince him to give us the sword.
>>
No. 93887 ID: 6faa8c

>>93858
Agreed. However, I will not steal from others unless absolutley neccessary. If need be, I could purchase the blade myself. However, I would rather not squander such hard-earned money...

One more thing: If the sword is sold to someone other than myself, it might prove impossible to track the person down. Selling and making magical items is illegal in most countries on this continent. There's a long history behind the prohibition, but I do not feel it needed to tell you of it.

Shall I confront the dragon directly? If so, should I aim to kill it or convince it to give up the blade?

Alternately, if ogres are especially dumb, they may accept any answer with "gold" in it. Perhaps say that you wish to trade gods, and convince the dragon with your golden personality. I feel that so long as I do not tell someone the location of my phylactery, I can essentially recover from whatever they do in the end. I'm also a decent judge of character. Anansi riles me, but... he's useful. Shi is... interesting to me.

As for the kobolds...
Kobolds are known for their ability not only as trapmakers, but also for their incredible, overpowering ability to live through anything as a race. As individuals, you are unlikely to find more stubborn creatures. They are not especially intelligent, Just below humans on average. They do have a city of their own, in the southlands, and do trade with some guilds and nobles. Most traps are kobold-made.

Kobolds look like humanoid pangolins, and can roll into a tight protective ball.

We enter, and a kobold looks up at me from behind a stonewroght desk.

The desk comes up to my knees.

"Greetings, sir! Oglap told me you are here to see Jerasp. I will be guiding you to him today, so you do not lose your way in the mines." it trundles out, its long tail scraping the earth. Its voice is high and squeeky, but also full of intense pride.

He reaches into the pile and pulls out a sword with a tiny face on the end of the handle, and places it before me.

"Trust me, you're doing me a favour."

?!?!?!

The limb does not respond?!
it falls to the ground. Thinking quickly, I grab my appendage through the hat, and pull it into storage as the creature lands, staring at me and Jerasp, who looks terrified.

"Flee, Spidersworn! Flee! This is not a foe you or I can conquer!" Even as he speaks, the creature lets out a howl and spins, then launches the spear. It flies true, but the dragon dodges, far faster than a creature so huge should be able to. +The wood is immune to fire of any sort.

Tell me the truth about it, or I shall kill you."

Anansi's face turns hard, and he lets out a very bitter laugh as he looks me in the eyes.

"You dare to threaten me?" he whispers, "You dare to threaten the god of trickery and magic, little lich? You think I sent you and my lover to your dooms?"
He is growing in size with each word, and by now has plopped onto the ground and is equal in height.
"Do you have any idea what you just faced and how lucky you are to have survived!? I draw the sword in the cane with Shi's help, and look it over. It's perfectly crafted, and at the base near the hilt, there is a stylized S engraved, made to look like a snake-like dragon.

I give it a few swings. It's wonderfully well balanced, and equally suited to slashing unarmored foes and at stabbing through chainmail. The heat will also render any wounds cauterized, so I need not worry about mess on my fine clothes. Excellent.

I remove my arm from the hat. The cut was exact and perfect. I am not certain that it was caused by the hat's portal closing prematurely. I begin to stitch it back on, but Shi stops me, taking the thread in her hands and doing it for me. Her work is precise, and I think she has some actual talent.

"This one fight could determine the fate of the entire universe. Magic or entropy? May our clashing blades decide which is preferable!"
I smile grimly. If I'm going to die, it should be spectacular!

The creature comes at me in a straight, tight charge, bounding across the dry earth.

Being a lich comes with many benefits. Including a greatly heightened sense of time. I could see the tensing of the muscles in her legs as she pushed forward, each bound adding more power to the spear. I could see the individual particles of dirt flying from her feet. I could see the spear come at me. I duck low, and lunge forward, under the spear, grabbing the haft tightly and pulling her forward unexpectedly.
As I planned, the jolt throws her off balance, and I bring up the blade to stab her, only to find it redirected by a dagger she had hidden un her boot. Left so vulnerable, she drops the dagger and punches me, lifting me up and sending me back some ten or twenty feet. Incredible! She nearly took my head from my shoulders! I get up and see her charging again...

Did she re-obtain her dagger?
If not, then try and use her momentum against her. Let her charge and then dive to the side, preferably slashing at her leg as you do so.

If this seems unwise, then perhaps try and stab her arm, in both cases you're trying to sever a tendon, as a lich you have an intimate knowledge of anatomy, right?

As a medical lich I can practically see her internal organs through her clothes.
I get out of the way at the last second, but before I can slash at her, her free hand, the one not bracing the spear intercepts as she spins. I barely manage to duck the spear and bring up my fist in time to slam into the back of her hand.

I hear snapping bones, and her spear flies off and hits a deer. She pulled out another dagger, lets out a cry and assaults me again, and I block it easily with my blade.

But then something odd happens.

She lets go of the daggers handle for the barest instant, and a length of brass snaps out and grasps my blade. Within a moment, she's snapped it out of my grasp and tossed it and the knife away.

We are both disarmed. Our respective weapons are behind out opponents.

Condenses, and connects the helm to the center of the armor, but doesn't quite bring it all the way back. It stands up and attacks again, and I barely manage to leap out of the way.

"Shi... before you were sworn to Anansi..."
She smiles.
"I was a bard." she says, "A weaver of story and song. But I also loved to put rich men in their place. I would talk my way into their homes with sweet words, and knock them out with chemicals and steal their precious diamonds and pearls they used on other girls. Anansi saw my work and enjoyed it greatly. He told me I could put many, many more in their proper place, if I wanted."

So our options are:
1) Stay here and wait for nightfall, killing whatever may come to attack us
2) Travel aimlessly for a day evading enemies, then return when it's dark.

How far are we from our destination? We could just go there then make sure we arrive here again at nightfall, if possible. Of course, having the Seerans with us might make anyone we meet rather fearful.

At least this area is a defensible position, at least from enemies that walk along the ground. If we're going to be fighting fliers it's actually pretty bad, what with the cliff there. They could toss us off it.

Certainly.

Sa'lam holds three throwing axes, two handaxes, and one large, two handed axe. He also has a utility knife and and coat-of-plates armor.

Shi has five throwing daggers, one long knife, and her leather armor.

Ella has her spear, two disarming knives, and light cloth armor with metalplates sewn into it.

Jax has his spear, three disarming knives, one short sword, and light armor.

I hold one knife, the cane blade, the armor inside my hat, my suit, cufflinks, and hat.

Let's see. Hattori should stand as far ahead as possible while still being able to see both choke points, and thus be able to use hat tricks for support of both. One Seeran should be at each choke, so as to apply antimagic on both sides. Shi and Sa'lam will also be split between each side.

I call out to my companions to prepare, and look out through the hills.

I see one huge figure, flanked by about two dozen smaller ones. He holds a massive smashing weapon, and is adorned with more. It appears that the enemy uses very little magic... and if indeed that incredibble luck was magical, it would take a while for it to be effected by Seeran null.

I take the south ramp, working with Shi as I watch the forces hammer into the northern palisade. Even as they try to hack it apart, Ella's spear hits again and again, killing each time, and Sa'lam manages to decapitate several.

I see them coming, and before they arrive, I stand beside and slightly behind Jax. Then I turn to the encroaching army.

Just when his attention turns away, I expel the contents of the hat violently, the suit of armor rocketing out faster than the eye can see, embedding in trees, the earth, rocks, and many, many creatures. Jax looks at me in awe and fear as I place the hat on my head and draw my blade.
"Keep your eyes on the enemy." I state, and Jax nods.

I understand even better now. Seeran sight does not effect instant effects unless they expect it.

The enemy forces are at half strength now, but the huge, lumbering, blee-

It's too bad the watch is not to be used for 'unfair death'... I imagine it could probably be used to kill or immobilize. We really need to find a way to find out more about what it can do, without using it improperly in the process.

I'm thinking we try to get in close, guard against an attack using the cufflinks, then teleport his head off via the hat while his arm rebounds. The Seerans won't expect that to happen so it should work.

First, we need to clear a path to him through the small fry.
>>
No. 96419 ID: 6faa8c

>>96409
This sounds like a plan.

Clearing a path is not neccessary.

I leap over the palisade, running past the creatures. Even as they swing at me, I take one blow to the hand, one to the foot, and keep going, leaving the peices behind. As I get into range of the big one, he rears back and punches at me, and I block with the sheild. I leap up, take off the hat, and place it on his head.

"Wha-"

HAT TRICK: SHOW STOPPER!

There's a horrible ripping sound, and the body falls down as I flip over it by grabbing his shoulder and lifting my body over. I land behind him and replace my hat, smiling as the head lands.

"That's all, folks."

The creatures flee.
