With the first thread of The Herd finished, I'd like to thank everyone who's made it to the end with me for sticking around. I hope it's been as enjoyable to read as it is to write!

College is kicking into high gear for me though, and I might be taking a break to keep up with the load of work!

In the mean time, I'd love to hear back from everyone on a few things.

For new readers who haven't read Blind Quest, have things been easy to understand? Were there any moments, scenes, etc, that didn't really make sense or felt confusing? If so, what could I do to make things clearer and easier to understand?

Then for everyone,
What are some things I could do to improve the quest in general?

What parts/scenes did you enjoy the most? What about the least?

What would you like to see more of in The Herd?

Any other comments and critique are also very much welcome. Thanks for reading!

>What about the least?
Not having the magic lighter carry over annoyed me. It seems silly she left it behind. But that's a pretty small thing.

>What are some things I could do to improve the quest in general?
Some of the decision points seemed a little weird to me- like, we would agree to go with someone to someplace to do something, and then they would ask us what we wanted to do when we got there.

For instance, this might have been me reading signals wrong, but it seemed odd that after deciding to not pursue leads and go home to bed that we then had a Marsh prompt for activities.

Neither of those is really a serious criticism, though. Overall I'd say you did well and I had fun. The addition of the sprite artwork is a big improvement.

First, sorry for bumping up the thread with a minor "update" here

Little update about what's been going on and where The Herd went this week.
Been having a lot of annoying on and off power outages this week and haven't really been able to work on The Herd at all. Plus exams were this week as well. It's sounding like the power issues are going to be going on for awhile yet, so at worst The Herd might become The Hiatus for a week or two yet.

Until then, feel free to drop some questions and feedback (which are always welcome) and enjoy this doodle of Marsh.

Take your time and thanks for the warning.
(on another topic talking about a cheap alternate to buying that can of compressed air is if her sister has a hair dryer you can just put a cardboard cone [with a 5mm hole at the tip] on it and that'll be a sufficient enough pressure to remove at least some of the dust {just watch out if it only has a hot setting because it could catch the cardboard alight from the direct heat})

Another goofy little "news"-ish post.

First, some life stuff. Going back to the last post, >>118795
Power issues I was having are (seemingly) fixed. Hasn't been a power outage here in awhile. College is getting close to wrapping up for me and I'll be graduating in May and then joining Candy on the hunt for a job. The Herd might hit another hiatus or slow down again towards late April and through May.

Now for some stuff for The Herd.
I've been digging around old pictures and sprites, and found some concept art/scene from last year of the gang (minus Sugar, she was in charge of photo taking that day.) Looking at back some of the other scenes has me wanting to do some more, but can't really decide on anything. So, I'm willing to take on some sprite scene requests for The Herd. Feel free to drop some ideas or requests here in the dis-thread.
As always, any questions, comments, feedback, and critique are all welcome.

This is just kind of a quick question thing. I feel like I had things go a little all over the place with the last thread here. This might be a little too "meta" but I'm wondering what'd I can do to make the next thread better or more interesting? What makes The Herd an interesting quest for you? What parts make it not interesting?

Any feedback/critique is welcome!

Sorry for the lateness of this -- I only just now got caught up through volume 4.

>I feel like I had things go a little all over the place with the last thread here.
The thread meandered a bit and seemed a bit aimless at times, but I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. I get the impression that you were trying establish to multiple "subplots" over the past couple threads: Sharcole's insomnia, the cultists, the police investigation, whatever is going on with Sugar, etc., which will play out in more detail in future threads. If that's the case, then I think it justifies the relative lack of focus in that thread.

>what I can do to make the next thread better or more interesting?
I think the next thread should focus on one or two of the subplots I mentioned above. If there are still more future plot events that you want to set the stage for, you could still do that in thread 5; but for the sake of keeping things interesting, I think at least one of the subplots needs to start developing further. (For example, maybe we'll find out what's causing Sharcole's insomnia and begin working to get rid of or otherwise deal with it.) I think it would also be interesting to start seeing hints that some or all of these subplots are connected in some way.

>What makes The Herd an interesting quest for you?
The characters are the main point of interest for me, especially Candy, Marsh, and Sharcole. (Officer Nibbles and Officer Freeze get an honorable mention.) I'm not sure how to describe why they make it interesting for me, aside from saying that I like their personalities. Aside from that, I have a hunch that the various plot threads are somehow intertwined, and I'm interested in seeing how that plays out.

>What parts make it not interesting?
I think some segments of the quest took longer than they should have -- the Old Maid game stands out in particular, but I seem to recall some of the segments at the cafe were longer than I would have preferred, as well. This isn't to say that no segment should be lengthy, but rather that the length should be justified by what happens during them. The Old Maid game, for example, seemed to mainly be meant to introduce some new characters, and I think it might have been better to just skip to the results of the game (at the expense of railroading the game itself).

On this day four years ago I started my first quest, Blind Quest. It's also been a little over two years now since I've started The Herd! It's pretty crazy looking back through the past few years and seeing my art go from the "blindar" to do actual and decent art in The Herd now. On top of The Herd hitting 1,000 panels today! Your quest doesn't have to accurately represent the sorry state of the police force in the US, and in fact it would get a *little* grimdark if the police in the quest were to suddenly betray the protagonists.

Like >>133079 said I think its ok for the Police in your quest to not be a 1-1 representative of their real world counterparts.
Your characters being decent people who uphold higher standards doesn't detract from your condemnation of police brutality.
Nibbles and Freeze are good eggs and they can be representative of how police can and should be.

If having jars was so important, then we should've automatically been given jars before we went into the sewers! That way not collecting anything would've been all our fault for forgetting.

But since we never had any jars in the first place, that made it impossible for us to collect anything! So it's not our fault we couldn't collect the cultists' ashes, it was an automatic fail that we couldn't prevent! Which is a really dumb thing to do to us!

I mean we were kinda told by Relina in Thread 7 ( https://questden.org/kusaba/questarch/res/919135.html#925802 ) that the church gets its status & funding by turning in bounties on cultist/chimera remains that the royal family puts out.
But to be fair its been a while and the situation in the sewer was kinda hectic, so I can see why it was forgotten/not a priority for suggestion at the time. Maybe if Relina had been in the fight group she would have reminded Roxie? And this might just a side effect of not having her there, along with just forgetting to scoop up/loot remains?
There was a lot of trash down there that we might have been able to use as containers on the fly.

On the bright side, it looks like we might still at least be able to do some damage control to deescalate the situation. Like trying to talk the Grumpy Cat down. Or also maybe take stock of who of the two teams is still in good condition and put a group together to go back and search for any remains that weren't washed away or lost.
Worst case scenario if Lumein gets excommunicated, we take her in to help her out and give her a place to stay. Then maybe we go underground to become badass rouge church agents or something.

My main critique would be that there were a couple of updates where there wasn't really a decision or guidance by the readers wasn't needed. And there wasn't enough energy happening in the scene to give comments on.
Still, you've got good intrigue going on and I'm looking foreward to the next thread

I'm going to cross post Marsh's enchantment info here in case it's easier to just come here for it later on instead of scrolling up and looking for it.

Shatter Shot- Takes water built inside the sword and fires a sharp icicle. The more water used, the bigger the projectile. Marsh can have the icicle shatter like a grenade for possible spread damage. Twenty second cool down. Requires water built up in the sword.

Geyser- Allows Marsh to take from a water source and blast a powerful stream of it at something. Water built up in the sword can also be used. Thirty second cool down.

Spike Set- Marsh can freeze water on the ground and raise sharp spikes made of ice. Ice already on the ground can also be reshaped into spikes. Thirty second cool down.

Absorption- Marsh can refill her sword with water from a nearby by source. Ten second cool down.

Frosted Coating- Takes all of the water in Marsh's sword and uses it to freeze over and extend the sword by three inches per gallon. Extended part of the sword shatters upon impact. One minute cool down.

Marsh's Sword can hold up to two gallons of water a time. This also affects the weight of the sword.
