Sup /tg/,
I've decided I want to do an epic Quest. I was inspired by Weaver's goodies and the Barbed Wheel and all that. I have a few ideas, and I think I know what the quest will be about, to some degree.

1. Protagonist is nuts, and honestly, knows it. Possibly Deadpool Syndrome, ie ability to see the fourth wall. She has only recently developed schizophrenia, and no, john. you are the schizophrenia. Also, she has a COMPLETELY unstable temperament, to the point where I was considering calling the quest itself "Chaotic Neutral".
2. Protagonist is going to be female and of age because I know /quest/ likes to draw porn.
3. Eldritch abomination will be involved.
4. There will be a drug related to the eldritch abomination.

I think the immense evil occult force will be something spider-based, and the drug will be DPH. This is because a) DPH is readily accessible everywhere but the former Soviet Union and Zambia, b) I used to run with a bit the wrong crowd, and every hallucination I've ever heard described (or had myself) with DPH involved spiders and, with larger doses, something the substance-abuser perceived as an enormous evil.

The drug is manufactured by cultists from the solidified will of the demi-god, or something like that.

That's all I've got so far though. Also, I am COMPLETELY new at this. I have tiny amounts of Paint skill and that's all.

Suggestions, thoughts, tips, insults, derogatory comments about my mother?

Picture related. It's what inspired me.

I wish no offense, but that sounds COMPLETELY terrible.

be more descriptive, exactly WHAT is it that makes it seem terrible to you?

Agreed. I cannot improve it without specifics.

I'm glad you asked. First and foremost, you've admitted your total lack of experience besides MSPaint. Never a good sign. Second, it sounds like a Ruby rip-off, rather than a homage. Stating your inspiration prior does not redeem it from being that.

More in depth:
1. Insanity, contrary to popular belief, is rather difficult to play right. With players, it usually dissolves to stupid randomness; with the reigns in your hands, you'd be far too often tempted to make terrible DM no-nos with "oh she just nuts" as an excuse.
2. What is this I don't even.
3. Have you been reading Lovecraft?
4. You have been reading Lovecraft.

This may come off as personal preference, but I think drugs, hallucinations and eldritch horrors are quite tired by now. There was a fair share of that even in quests. I mean, check out the currently running other Ruby homage, Abomination.

Again, this could be pulled off if you know what you're doing. Unfortunately, you've stated the opposite, so I'm inclined to have the opinion that you should rethink your plan.

As a post script, you should know that this is an immensely forgiving community. If you feel you want to do it, don't let nay-sayers like yours truly stop you from having it your way.

No offense, but why would you tell us all this? I mean, I guess you intend to run your quest here, in /quest/.

And you just explained to your potential audience all about the plot, possible twists and all.

I strongly advise learning how to draw, and checking around at other quests to get a better idea of what has 'been done' already.

Show us your art!

I wouldn't necessarily bother with Learning How To Draw. Nothing will improve your art like a constant stream of updating. It forces you to draw all the time, and you'll get better.

Read the wiki article. (it's stickied at the top of this board)

Also, I'm inclined to agree with naysayer guy about some of the things. It depends on how much of a blank slate you make the protagonist. If the insanity is just an excuse to railroad, that's bad. If it lets her take inconsistent and somewhat stupid suggestions, then that's a good thing.
>>
No. 20130 ID: 4ae7b5

See, here's the thing, you just kinda told us your plot here. Crazy women protagonists are essentially passe here at this point, as are dead elder gods, magical drugs manufactured from said elder gods, oh and waking up sans memory in a facility.

Also, if you are just getting some ideas of where to start with a quest but don't really know where you're going with the plot you are quite likely to get bored, become unfocused, ect (ie: you want a few possible endgame scenarios to work towards.) I know it may feel a bit like railroading, but questing is often a lot of effort for little return, without a hopeful 'goal' to shoot for at the end it becomes almost unpalatable task.

>If it lets her take inconsistent and somewhat stupid suggestions, then that's a good thing.
THIS is actually what I was going for with the insanity. It would not be inconsistent of her to put the hand in the pneumatic tube, she does shit like that all the time WITHOUT the thread's prompting. Throwing her actions at the mercy of these voices is as much a game for her as it is for you. And she plays by its rules, ESPECIALLY when it takes her fun places.

I'm still considering everything the naysayer has said. I have not read Lovecraft but I've been told I'd like it; the only thing I'm planning on having in common with Ruby is the sex of the protagonist, the eldritch horror, and the drug (though I'm looking at a narcotic, not medicine).

Thank you guys for the criticism. If there is more to be had, keep it coming.

Why do I imagine an eldrich abomination taking the drugs?

There isn't really much more to say until you start something. Also, read the wiki article (it's on the sticky at the top of this board).

Because Cthulhu just needs to mellow out and have a joint.
>>329938
Much appreciated. I'll take this into account before starting my Quest. Is there a suggestion for a less ambitious one, to give me a bit of practice before I set this one running, or should I forget about such silliness and work on this one?
>>
No. 20141 ID: 55e935

If you want to include the eldritch horror, you want to have it be more than just a big scary monster from the stars. Real eldritch horrors need to have soul-wrenching existential ramifications. Most people forget that these things are not just visually scary, but philosophically as well.

Thank you for the suggestions. I've been told a way to railroad unnoticed is to place the objectives in front of the player AFTER they've set their course; if the party goes east when you wanted the dungeon to be north, relocate the dungeon to the east.

Hopefully I'll be awhile preparing this, and most of the fa/tg/uys will have forgotten by the time I'm ready to start.

Also, though it's inspired by Ruby it's not an homage.

>>329941
I will take this into account. I would've neglected it otherwise. Thanks.

If you need any help with drugs 420 will be happy to help.

I was planning for her to me modest, but she's also batshit insane and if it's the only thing the voices suggest...

Thanks for mentioning 420, hadn't thought of that.

my only problem with listening to everyone is that someone like mneme or pie-chart could show up and dick things up while someone trying to actually help was asleep.

Mneme posts pretty damn good in my quest... remember that the tone an author sets for a quest will often determine the quality of suggestions.

The only thing I have to say about this is that the OP never should have made this thread. You have said way too much to your audience in advance.
>>
No. 20172 ID: 69f105

The protagonist WILL pick the suggestion she likes the most, so if the LOLSORANDUMB shit like mneme or pie-chart happens to appeal to her, she'll do it - possibly over something more helpful in the long-term. Again comparable to the hand in the mail-vacuum-thing.

The only advice I can offer to you is... be original!

Because 1 Ruby was great
but 50 Ruby clones would not be.

Variety is the spice of life!

Man, I seem to be hearing that a lot lately.
>>
No. 20262 ID: c4c313

My advice is do whatever works for you. If it's a Ruby clone, if it's Original Content, the only thing that matters is it's a good story. If you have a good idea, then go with it, and don't wait for our approval.

One other bit of advice, Weaver is a much better artist than you might think. Don't expect to be able to duplicate Ruby Quest your first time.

I'll be cheating. Sprite data sheets work for computer games, they can work for me. Unless you guys do something bizarre and unexpected. Like climb up the fucking pipe.

bizarre and unexpected is the name of the game. this one game i saw you had to save a random rat from a random cat in the first 10 minutes of the game or on hour 3 you are trapped in a cell. if you saved the rat then it would come in and chew your ropes if you failed then you lose. so random bullshit saves lives.

Do 'test updates.' Draw something just like you would if you were updating, think about what the text would be, or actually write it. Then, think of what some likely suggestions would be. Think of a response. Draw that.

That's a pretty good way to spot any problems and fix them before it's too late. Maybe you're overambitious in some way, the art, the writing, the scope. Maybe you need to think about pacing, whatever.

I can't frame a face with hair worth shit, and heroine's not gonna be bald. That's what's too ambitious. I'mma go to 4chan's /ic/ I think, and ask for some advice. Unless you guys have something helpful.

it's called redlining, draw a picture for us that is unrelated to the quest and then ask. can't give tips without seeing what is wrong.

Will do as soon as I have time, if my artist girlfriend doesn't agree to collaborate with me on it.
