So there's this ancient, crappy Windows-based Strip Poker game from 1994 that only lets you play one on one and has numerous other stupid limitations. Why do I bring this up then?

Because you can make your own challengers!
It takes a bit of work and some outside compiling but it's pretty simple in terms of materials.

SO HERE IS THE PLAN: Make campy, dated strip poker entries for various Quest characters! This is fantastic and cannot possibly go wrong.

DISCLAIMER: Since this is basically just a means of winning a bunch of sequential images you don't have to make it about stripping. You could make it about someone playing in a big sunny field. You could replace losing articles of clothing with hardcore sex acts. Hell you could make a linear adventure with on-image word bubbles in which you progress by winning poker hands and eventually reveal the mysterious endgame!

GET THE PACKAGE HERE
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OXL71FS4
Included please find:

The Strip Poker "shell" EXE which you load up characters with. Character files are in DLL form. One really low-quality "test" DLL has been included, for Nan. This was done in about ten minutes SO DON'T JUDGE ME MANNN.
You'll also find a third item, a folder with instructions on how to make your own character DLL!

How to Use
When you play, be sure to go into options and choose "Show at normal size" so the images aren't stretched/squashed. It's also a good idea to set starting money to 1,000 instead of 3,000 since that takes forever.
Every time either person runs out of money they'll remove one article of clothing and get back in the game for +$1,000.
In-game, if you're confident of your hand, spam bets of 500 (the max amount). Betting less is pointless and takes forever.
Finally, if your opponent runs out of money, you don't have to actually PLAY the final hand. Just get them to bet their last dollar and they lose.

HOW DO I MAKE MY OWN CHARACTER?
This is a very good question! If you're pretty handy with computer stuff you can use a very backwards-compatible Windows Resource Editor (Open Watcom works well, here: http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/openwatcom/open-watcom-c-win32-1.8.exe) to open an existing DLL, like Nan.dll and edit it. The included guide should help you but mostly you'll be doing two things:
1. Importing images by copying them after you've drawn them, then pasting them into the "bitmap" resource menu. As the guide says they're in order, so delete the original (Nan) resource and rename your new one to replace it.
2. Editing the strings to customize your file, so you have flavor text (things they say when folding, winning, losing, etc) to make it seem like you're really playing with that character! WOW!

THIS IS TOO HARD DO IT FOR ME
Okay!
Hit me up on IRC (this is TG_Weaver shhhh) and send me your stuff and I will compile it for you! But here is what I'll need first!
1. Images of your character at various stages of losing, from fully dressed to -- however far they're willing to go! Eight is a good number of images for this. They can be any size or dimension and can be full color too! No more 256 color restrictions! Wow!
2. One single 120x120 image of your character that will be displayed in the DLL browser when picking a character. If you're lazy just crop it out of one of your in-game images.
3. A list of what your character is supposed to say! You can see an example in the attached image.
The MOST IMPORTANT of these things are what they say every time they lose a round, for instance "Oh no I guess I'll take my pants off" or "I wonder what's behind this door" or "I don't think that will fit" or "You're not my real father"! These are important for each "step" of the game, that is, each time you win enough that your opponent has to advance to their next image.
Less important but still relevant are your character's flavor text, so just give me some examples of what they say when they win, lose, fold, raise, call, etc. Nothing special.
Remember that most of these lines have to be kept pretty short because the engine is dated!

That's about it! Get to work! I'll compile for anyone who's having trouble or doesn't want to deal with the hassle.
I hope you enjoy the shitty example I included but hopefully we can get a whole stupid library going and then no one will ever take us seriously again!

Good luck!

another important line is what they say when you first challenge them or highlight their DLL on the menu. Sort of a YEAH LET'S DO THIS line.

Can anyone get this to run on Vista 64-bit? It gives me this error:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

Yeah it seems that Vista 64-bit is incompatible with 16-bit programs.

My personal solution was to break out the Eee, which... probably doesn't help you much. :(

Well, I do have a spare computer sitting around, actually, so I guess I'll be plugging that old thing in. I read somewhere that VirtualPC can be used to get around this, but you have to use Virtual PC 2007. That doesn't come with an operating system built-in or something though, because I can't get it to boot.

If you are using 64-bit Vista and don't want the hassle of a virtual PC and just want to see the bitmaps you can use eXeScope to open the .dll (open watcom doesn't work with 64-bit Vista).

Here's a handy guide of all the strings included in the game that you'll need to customize to make a character. These don't ALL need to be super-unique. Some lines that just say "You win" or "I fold" are fine, no need to go overboard unless it suits the character anyway.

THINGS TO REMEMBER
1. There is a character limit of about 50. This means each line has to be pretty short!
2. There are numerous possible lines for "you win!" or "I win!". This refers to a particular hand, not for the whole game or even for an article of clothing (those are specifically outlined at the bottom). The "Player wins"/"Opponent wins" lines are chosen at random, so this is one of the best places for flavor text.

The text shortcuts are:
%u is how much the opponent bets or raises in monetary units selected. "I'll bet %u" turns to "I'll bet $120" if they're betting $120.
%d is how many new cards they are swapping out for after initial betting. "I'll take %d new cards" turns to "I'll take 2 new cards" if they're changing 2.
%s is the final card value of either the player or the opponent. So "Voila! I have %s" turns to "Voila! I have one pair!" or "Voila! I have a royal flush!" depending on what they have.

I'm beginning to suspect the game is rigged to be easy for the player to win. I usually get three of a kind or two pair and have received with bizarre frequency some four of a kind and full house hands. Meanwhile the AI is terribly stupid and will bet more than a thousand dollars on a hand of one pair.

If you want to get to the good stuff easier just set the starting cash to the minimum of 1000 dollars and you can easily get to the second picture in the first hand.

John.

The *eavers are both friends and when people started cranken around with Reaver's last Romanticar (literally spamming 'join marines dur hur') it catalyzed well... the shattering of the foundation upon which tgchan was built.

Tgchan is essentially drawfag Rapture where the quester need not fear the sagefag, and the artist the troll. But now...

Then we need a better clause for 'I would rather not use that suggestion'.
There's already the 'If the quest author doesn't want sex in the quest and says so, then stop suggesting it', but nothing else.
There's also just not posting when the author ignores you, but that has problems by itself...
Maybe RAILROAD as a safeword or something?
Or STORYPRUNE?
>>
No. 5665 ID: dda9dd

>>315464
I think it comes down to the Author deciding it would be radically out of character for them to choose this choice and outside of the ideals of the quest.

I think some of the Authors are getting through by stating out the character as having a high logic and thus will not simply chose the most popular suggestion, but the one that 'makes sense.'

Also, we already knew Reaver was on a Romance Story kick. So don't go in a start demanding Manly and Gar all up in his Romanticar simply because we know he 'can' do it. Simply dont post in the quest you don't like... it isn't that hard. We can't force an Author to follow 'The Rules' they arbitrary decided to follow themselves.

We would need either a different program or someone to rewrite this one as a 32 bit program instead of 16 bit. Astoundingly, this seems to be the best strip poker game that exists.

Western Strip Poker - Not freeware, custom characters possible in theory, but no custom text.
Roll Yer Own Strip Poker - Not freeware, custom characters, no custom text.
Your Own Strip Poker - Additional characters are .dat files, no clue how to deal with them.
Hentai Anime Poker - I have no fucking clue. This is a terrible program.
Various terrible flash pokers - Not simple to add new characters to, generally awful

No guarantees, but if you help find bugs in this you improve the probability. Feed it hands, check it classifies them and compares them to the previous hand correctly (including things like resorting to kickers). The "Using" line should be the cards sorted "nicely" to show off the hand.

http://users.ecs.soton.ac.uk/prb/junk/pokerhands.exe
(Should run fine under paranoid limited user settings.)

(The "(0 cards)" is the number of cards in the hand needed to define that category of hand---e.g. a Three of a Kind is 3. You can mostly ignore it. Yes, it's broken in the screenshot.)

It's looking pretty unlikely that I'm going to spend the time coding up a game for people to wank to, not least as my dev machine is currently in hard drive warranty hell and if I'm going to program anything that tgchan calls for, a less broken collaborative paint tool is far more impressive and I can actually put my name to it, so I can at least offer up the source for hand detection in case someone wants to put a UI and some betting rules around it.

A 11.3MB RAR'd DosBox environment that boots straight into the game, true-colour SVGA, tested on 64-bit Windows 7. Audio too, but the game doesn't seem to have any, and I didn't install CANYON.MID to keep the size down.

To set it up:
- Install DOSBox for your platform. http://www.dosbox.com/
- Extract the RAR somewhere.
- Edit the bottom of the dosbox.conf in the DosBoxPoker folder to have the full path where you extracted it to, e.g. mount c: C:\Games\DosBoxPoker
- Create a shortcut (or alias or whatever works for you platform) to the DOSBox EXE you installed with a -conf argument of the .conf file, e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -conf C:\Games\DosBoxPoker\dosbox.conf (you might also want to make sure that the Working Directory is the poker one so any screen captures you make using DOSBox go there)

When you launch that shortcut, a DOS VM should boot up Win3.1 and then straight into the game (you might want to play with its Options to fit the screen better, or just maximize it). Exit Windows to shut it down again cleanly. Ctrl-F10 grabs/ungrabs the mouse.

To change the resolution Windows 3.1 runs at:
- Put rem in front of win and exit from the very bottom of dosbox.conf (e.g. "rem win")
- Run DOSBox
- cd windows
- setup
(It's important you're in C:\Windows in DOSBox to do this. If you're in C:\, setup will try to reinstall Windows.)
- Select Display
- Scroll down the list to one of the "S3 864" drivers. You want a version with "SF" on the end, since this is "small" (normal) fonts, and "LF" ones may cause Poker to lay out wrong. You want as many colours as you can get. I've had no luck getting it working properly above 1024x768.
- Select Accept the configuration
- Hit Enter to keep the existing driver
- Type win to test it.
- If everything's broken, just restart DOSBox and pick a different display line
- Remove the rems from dosbox.conf when you're done

I also have a mac. It's possible to run in Wine, if you take the trouble to install it. I recommend doing so, if you can stomach a little syntax, since it's useful for a lot of things besides this as well.

You could also try PlayOnMac, though I find it somewhat troublesome. It will, however, install Wine for you, after which you can use the basic wine commands in the Terminal, which is easy enough.

The problem is that modern operation systems like Windows Seven01a19 are written too far away from the hardware and do not leave enough megahertz for the poker program to run correctly. What Slinkoboy has done is to "peel back" the layers of Windows using emulation to get back down to the raw chips so that poker can run as designed. It is very advanced computations science so naturally only experts can understand the problems and see the true elegant brilliance of this solution!

Well, after having made a DLL for this awful strip poker program (I'll release it once certain in-quest conditions are met), and having had to downgrade my copy of WINE just to use it, I'd say I'm sick of it. I also want to learn to code.

I figure I can kill two birds with one stone. I'm going to try to make a new strip poker application to replace this awful abomination from the nineties. I'm sure that this will take forever and probably crash and burn, given but I figured it's worth a try, and was worth a mention.

That said, beyond replicating the original program and providing an easier way to make DLLs, I have very little idea of where to go with it beyond the most obvious stuff. I was wondering if anyone had some feature requests? Currently, I have a few ideas on the table:

-A way to make new characters that doesn't involve bizarre software
-Less random dialogue/New dialogue for each stage of undress
-Dialogue boxes that don't suck
-Ability to display formats other than .BMP, ESPECIALLY animated .gif files
-Branching paths
-Some way to play against more than one character (no idea for how to implement this)
-Of course, backwards compatibility

Keep in mind that I have none of the skills to actually do any of this right now, so don't expect anything anytime soon. If at all, for that matter.

An ability to actually set new default options for each game, so every time you close the application you don't have to change the price, bid limits and shit each time the application comes up. Though maybe that's a given user friendly thing.

And drop that. You don't want to be writing a loader for 16-bit DLLs, and Win32's LoadLibrary() won't do it for you in a 64-bit world.

>I would aim for the bare minimum for now and expect to get it working properly in about a year.
I across as overzealous in that post, didn't I? The intention here is to get a solid idea of what features to add later on, so I don't unintentionally do something to close off the possibility of adding them later. I'd be crazy to attempt to do all that without having the basic stuff down first.

>A year
Out of curiousity, why would I expect it to take that long? I'm fine if it does, mind you. This is for the most part an educational project for me, so as long as I'm learning something here, I'm fine.

>And drop that. You don't want to be writing a loader for 16-bit DLLs, and Win32's LoadLibrary() won't do it for you in a 64-bit world.
Ouch. Hadn't thought about that. Planned feature dropped. It'd probably be easier to manually extract the content from the DLLs and convert them to the new format.

Also, as a quick note, is Java a good language to be attempting this in? I hear it's one of the easier to start with, and it seems to work well cross-platform. As a linux user, the latter is extremely important to me.

>Out of curiousity, why would I expect it to take that long?
Because you appear to be starting from complete scratch and it takes a good three year or so degree to write code that isn't awful. A poker game is around a second year coursework.

>is Java a good language
No.

>I hear it's one of the easier to start with
It's a great starting language if you want to mislearn everything. Bear in mind that previously people who advocate "easy to start with" languages pointed at BASIC. (BASIC is actually less terrible since at least it isn't fundamentally broken in the myriad ways Java is.)

C++, or C if C++ is throwing too many concepts at you at once. Ignore any C++ learning material that doesn't use the STL. You could probably do the GUI in GTK+/GTKmm, or even SDL or perhaps SFML if you mostly just want a framebuffer and events.

Well, it would appear that I've vastly underestimated the difficulty of the material I'm working with. Probably because I've spent the last few years working with the, from the sounds of it anyway, comparatively very, very simple language that is the Elder Scrolls 4 scripting language. I was able to read through everything I know about scripting in a couple hours, if that's any indicator.

Not to say I'm dropping the project or anything. The idea'll give me a tangible goal to work toward. Just keep in mind that it's unlikely that anything will come of it. In the meantime, feel free to keep dropping feature requests. I'll keep them in a .txt file that probably won't get touched until I can make something decent, if at all. Which may be a long, long time from now.

Also, thanks for the advice. From the sounds of it, I may have really screwed myself over without being pointed in the right direction.

Ah, well then you're not starting from scratch, but from something that looks sort of Smalltalkish.

As long as it's relatively easy to make characters for I'd say this thing could be amazing.

You spread it around enough people are going to start using it in a lot of places. Not just here. That could be pretty cool.

If it happens, that is. Which would be neat.

Hard to say. I find resizing not worth the hassle since it always goes back to the small box and I open it up full size anyway. The size you've been using is ok for me, a little smaller might be better. Don't know how others fare.
>>
No. 49398 ID: 94ed3e

768x768 is probably the highest you would want to go, and I believe it is the highest anyone has done. 1024x768 is the highest you're going to get in the DOSBox workaround, and anyone not using that is probably using an older system with a low resolution anyway.

The DOSBox option is the current best way to go if you have a 64-bit system. 2563d4's easy mode way to open up the poker program (updated to have all the current dlls already) can be downloaded here:
http://uploadmirrors.com/download/1QXENDHN/DosBoxPoker.7z
You should be able to just throw it into C: and then run the "Windows 3.1" .lnk file. You can change where you put it if you also change the config file.

If you don't need the DOSBox but need a non-mediafire host, these are the DLLs uploaded to a frillion hosts (I had the same 26 that Cockhole did, so I am pretty sure this is all of them):

On the subject raised earlier on August 2010 and then in December 2011, I don't know how hard it'd be for someone with C++ skills to do, and I'm aware I could come off as a bit of an idiot, but perhaps PokerTH's source code could be edited to be used as a base (Granted, it's currently based around Texas Hold-'Em, but the type of poker surely isn't that great an issue?)

I have next to no skills in programming (Read: I once made a deal-or-no-deal-esque game in Visual Basic, and that's it) but it seems like it would be an easier base to work from than the other strip pokers mentioned, what with the source being open and all. It would need editing to be strip poker, and not just poker, of course, but it seems slightly better than wrestling with old or closed-source code or writing from scratch? Just a suggestion.

whatever. Call me a dog-molester if it makes you feel any better. I wanted to update the wiki page because the alternative is to read an entire thread that started over three years ago. I feel the strip-poker project (old or new) could use more love, and I wanted to lower the barrier to entry.

Must we use uploadmirrors.com as the download link? The first download site it offers wants me to install their custom "one-shot" software to download the file (trojan? I don't dare try it), and of the remaining 12 sites, only 2Shared and Rapidshare are not "file not found" errors.

Ideally you should have done the latter to achieve the former.

>I wanted to lower the barrier to entry.
The barrier to entry is people actually drawing frames. Show up with a bunch of pictures and text ready to go and see volunteers fall over each-other to package it up. (It's at least two, which is an order of magnitude above the capacity needed.)

>Must we use uploadmirrors.com as the download link?
