Hey everyone! I figured it was time to make one of these.

I'm glad we're receiving such a positive turnout to our new quest! I hope we all have a great time with this.

I should point out that my artist does have a work schedule, and lives in Germany to boot, so can only draw so often. We'll do our best, but be patient with us.

Did anyone have questions?

We will do our best! I've been pondering this quest for ages and Lovar was just finally the one who was able to let it set off.

Take care of your artists, kiddies! They are fickle and complex creatures, requiring lots of grooming and attention!

And maybe a box or two.

So I've actually been streaming these while I work, and a couple people asked about my SAI brushes. They're actually REALLY REALLY helpful when I need to quick shade something or add some texture, so I figured I'd link them here as well for anyone else who might be wondering just what I'm using. http://darlingmionette.deviantart.com/art/SAI-Tutorial-Custom-Brushes-162081137 (Obviously that's not me, just the tutorial I got them from.)

So Chapter One is over. Any questions, comments, art suggestions for chapter two? This is my first time drawing for one of these, so I'm trying my best to make stuff clear, but as the artist at times I'm not sure how well that goes. Feel free to be harsh. ;D

I also want to point out to people that the prologue was intended to be, to some extent, railroaded. A few important things were discovered, several goals were reached, and then it came down to one of two ways for the prologue to end.

This was just the more unpleasant one.

But now the fun will commence, with a minimum of forced paths.

Chapter 2 starts tomorrow!

I think maybe some of the newer suggesters haven't dealt with traps in quests before :/

>>59177

What do you mean?
>>
No. 59190 ID: 6a1ec2

I've dealt with traps, but this place seemed safe enough. There was a question of if it looked like the fallen skeleton's bones had just gotten pushed apart by dragging something through there, but it was never answered. I think if it were clearer that the skeleton had been chewed in half then more people would have advised extreme caution. At any rate it makes sense for the protagonist to be a bit naive, especially since there were no traps in his entire existence beforehand.

Generally a quest author will make the first trap an automatic "close shave" if they want the audience to be checking for traps in every nook and cranny and all. Otherwise the audience just assumes that would be disruptive and avoid suggesting danger lurking in every corner.

I can definitely say that now having actually gotten caught in the teeth of a trap, you'll see no end to suggestions to carefully manipulate things from a distance. Good luck getting any actual suggestions past that!
>>
No. 59197 ID: b85f8c

Well, I meant, if there's more than one skeleton in a location there's either a trap there or a monster's lair. Since it was a corridor, the more likely explanation is that it's trapped.

It should've been a red flag. I don't think anyone can really complain about triggering and getting wounded by the trap. The fact that like three updates went by without us getting any say in how to REACT to the trap was a bit frustrating, though.

Again, what happened to Explore Quest?
>>
No. 59216 ID: aff299

>>59190
>>59197

I'm sure that would have been true if we remained in the corridors and spent more time with tomb exploration. The fact is that the trap was a device intended to establish several things rather than set the tone to 'extreme caution':

-Give some insight into how he handles injury
-Establish that yes, he can be really naive in some ways
-Make the status screen appear for the first time.

After that the prologue was finished with its goals and it was time to move on to the actual plot, because I didn't want this to be taking large amounts of time crawling around in (well ransacked and treasureless) ruins. Sorry that you guys felt a little unable to react.

>>59207

sorry ten. I saw the first time but forgot to answer.

I'm not sure. It's on hiatus for the moment, and there is a lot of focus on getting this one running. It will start again, in time. I haven't abandoned it.

I will definitely work on making things a bit more clear next time as to things chewedapart ect.
Also my timing. I was trying to convey short sequences while still staying within the one-panel-per-post quest layout that had been set up, but that does seem to be frustrating people. Should short actions be hooked together in one long image? Or should I work on conveying them fully within the one panel?
Also, as Kaed pointed out the prologue was meant more to just get people used to how things work and unlock the character screen, so in the future there will definitely be less railroad and more choices. (See image, it's one of my pathfinder dungeons)
It was also meant to show that there was actual consequence and Protagonist could get hurt, so like, making things feel more 'real' versus just a silly doodlequest.

Having several panels in one post is one way to do it, but there is a simpler way to have a single action in multiple panels. You can do so by writing in the subject line like...

I'd have to say my only complaint from a depiction of puzzles perspective was that once the saw-blade was revealed, we couldn't tell how big a threat it was. Where it was, if we'd already avoided it, how big it was, etc. I for one assumed he'd already gotten out as we'd suggested, and he was looking at the thing. Was kind of surprised to see it running into his back a panel later.

But that's a pretty minor complaint, especially since it didn't appear to have any serious consequences. Good job overall, and don't worry if the intro was partially railroaded.

The last guy got cut in half by the saw blade. I think if it were easy to avoid he wouldn't have dove in front of it? Our guy was struggling to get out of the tiny passage and arguing with us; simply didn't have enough space and time to get out of the way, much less to punch the saw.

Hey, everyone who still cares about this quest or even remembers it.

Sometimes the most sucky part about running a thing like this is understanding and that your hopes and expectations for it aren't always going to pan out. In fact, sometimes it just sort of dies without any particular warning.

I guess the point of this rambling update is really to let you know that Legacy Quest is probably over, or at the very least on indefinite hiatus.

It's been two months, and I think I need to accept that my artist friend just isn't with me anymore. It's upsetting, but I guess lingering around hopefully isn't going to change anything.

So, barring someone here wanting to take over for him (which would be really cool but I doubt it happening), this quest will have to go on hold until he suddenly comes back or I have enough artistic skill to do it myself.

Sorry, everyone.

That's too bad. I did enjoy this one- the wood elemental deal was fairly unique and had some interesting potential, and I liked the art style too.

>>62261
... I don't know, man. I thought people didn't really care for those. And thus far it seems the plot and the art together were the pull. If I remove half of that, will anyone still care?

Obviously some dudes care about text quests, there's at least three that are doing just fine. Most of them seem to end because authors flake instead of them losing their audiences.

>Most of them seem to end because authors flake
I think that's more true of quests in general than text quests in particular.

More broadly, yes there is an audience for text quests (albeit a smaller one) and yes, some people really don't care for them. At all. (Philistines).

That said, it would require a fairly significant shift in tone and style to pull a transition from an imaged quest to a text quest. In fact, I'm not sure the elements that appealed to me here would translate well at all. It could still be possible to work out something good- but it would be something significantly different than you have here.

>tl;dr
Don't be afraid to try a text quest someday if you're interested. Not really sure this quest would feel right as one without a fairly dramatic overhaul.

Well I decided to get off my ass and work on decoding the symbols seen in the flower images and the intro image. It's really easy due to having the corresponding plaintext for every flower image, but I found some oddities.

First off, every I is replaced with Y. Similarly, every F is replaced with P. Third, every W and V is replaced with the symbol for U.

The Moondrop text replaces every period and comma with A for some reason. Previous flower texts have symbols for periods and commas, so this might be a problem with (I presume) automated code for making the ciphertext?

There aren't any J, X, or Z present in the plaintext yet, but using what I have now, I can almost completely translate the text in the intro image:

KAERNYPE(1=probably x, for Kaernipex) ARE
MANUPACTURED PROPA(looks like - is replaced by A in this one)
ERTY OP CYNODYNE
YNSPYRANTS. MANUA
PACTURE OP HYBRD
MODELS MUST BE
GRANTED BY PERMYSA
SYON AS PER CONA
TRACTUAL OBLYGAA
TYONS.
PAYLURE TO
COMPLY UYTH YNA
SPYRANT REGULAA

It stops there. So... it was an incomplete copyright warning.

Yes. This story will (eventually) include three characters each with their own story that eventually intermingle.

The slow pacing of this has been a great frustration for me, but I have set an artistic standard for this quest that I can't match without outside artists. X_X

>>92213

You have it basically right, with only a few letters wrong. Unfortunately, when that image was made, I was not aware exactly how wonky it looked when translated, or that the cipher was bizarre and duplicated letters. Or was missing bits. The text, properly translated, is:

Kaernifex are manufactured property of Cynodyne Inspirants. Manufacture of hybrid models must be granted by permission as per contractual obligations. Failure to comply with Inspirant Regulations will result in sanction.

What any of that means is up to reader guesswork. But, I will say.

It's not exactly a copyright statement. :3

Hey. I wanted to give a notice that this quest will soon be reviving, but more importantly, wanted to talk to people about something regarding this quest in particular and it's protagonists and characters.

When I first started writing this 7 years ago, I had a much less concrete idea about the world setting it was in and particularly the designs of the characters involved. I had a very dog-centric set of aesthetic tastes and not a whole lot of design creativity. Over the period of time where this quest was largely sitting, I had a lot of free time to develop the world and reconsider designs, learn more about what made something feel visually interesting.

And 'regular anthro dog man with some branches growing out of his back' just doesn't really meet the standards I have for design today. So, while it might be a little weird, going forward, some characters, particularly the main one, may suddenly look a bit different in body shape or general design than they used to. I can't go back and revise every piece of art made for me by the frankly massive array of artists who have worked on this quest, but I can just move forward with a look I'm more happy with. This will be sort of a 'retcon' change, and not one that I will explain in-canon in any fashion. I will just treat things as if they have always looked this way and focus on moving the story forward instead of trying to think up reasons in-character why things are different and wasting time acknowledging them.

Also, there is now a Patreon for me and Cervink's quest work. Cervink will be the new dedicated artists for all my quests that continue on this medium. There are already some patron-only rewards up, if you are interested in learning more about this world-setting!

I personally like how June quest handled its multi year pause >>/quest/920998 mentioning it as a idle thought and then continuing as if nothing happened (because nothing in-verse did)
