TGMUD is a Multi User Dungeon I am creating just for you, /tg/chan! It's made using MUDMaker. This has upsides including that it is easy to use and has reliable hosting. It also has downsides, mainly being that the free trial has 2 hours of hosting daily and I don't know how to pay for the hosting nor do I have the money for it.

MUD password: tgchan

I'll post here with the telnet link when I bring it up tomorrow.

Whoah, hey now, I'm just not a fan of Java. Don't get so defensive - there was no offense intended, man. The fact that you're running anything at all for us is pretty cool of you.

If you're happy with the codebase you're using now, then I can't help you. If you're interested in switching over to something else, but aren't sure what to use or don't think your platform will support it, I'd be glad to offer my two cents. *nix obviously offers the widest variety of codebases, but Windows servers have their fair share as well (either through ports, Cygwin, or proprietary builds).

Of course, it seems your primary problem is a lack of server at all. I have a Windows Server 2008 box I don't mind opening up, but it's so new that I'm sure a lot of older codebases aren't going to want to work. If anyone else on tgchan is willing to offer up an old box (seriously, this thing just needs network access and a couple hundred megs - it can be a dinosaur), we can work with that.

When are you usually on IRC? I'd like to have a chat about this, if you're up to it.

http://www.no-ip.com/ is a fantastic service. They have a free version that limits your choice of domains, but it's still pretty freaking fantastic. Basically you download this little client that periodically broadcasts your IP to the No-IP server so they can update your subdomain to point to the right address.

That's a shame. I'm almost tempted to roleplay something journeyquest-y.

Almost.

We need more info on the setting, though. (like EVERY fan made setting).

If this gets redone, I'd love to see various areas be various quests, with some mixed together (like Journey, Deep and Alien's underground caverns).

Think of it as a unified quest setting for /tg/chan.

Technically this isn't inactive, I just haven't hosted it because of the shitty router I can't do anything with and haven't added to it because I can't host it. If any people are interested, a Hamachi channel would probably allow people to join the game.

We're slowly picking up speed with the amount of areas running.

We have races from BiteQuest, AfterQuest and Journey working. Numbers is working on AlienQuest areas. BiteQuest is slowly mapping out his quest. Squeegy is making his part of the town. There's little to do right now but with each day the possibilities seem to grow.

I've balanced most of the races. The default ones were horribly unbalanced in comparison to the new ones (Stat bonuses with no drawbacks. No proper max. stat adjustion).

They should work swell now.

I haven't touched any races that belong to specific settings, anyone that wants some help balancing them, can contact The Fluffy on the MUD.

Alright. A little critique here.

First of all, what's up with the city area? Just... the entire city. The guards randomly arrest players for no apparent reason, muggers cast spells and then hover around corpses (and are a total newbie trap to boot), and the entire randomly getting hit with Prison Geas thing is just annoying.

Seriously. My level 1 Sergal fighter got turned into a Minotaur. And then randomly killed by a mugger anyway. While she was looking for her last corpse, which was /also/ killed by the same mugger.

Second point: If we are discouraged from PKing, why on earth is the PK flag not only on from the very start, but in fact not togglable at all? There is a big sign right at the beginning that says 'Please don't be a dick PKing people', and then you have PK flags set for every new character. I suggest doing something about this. Make it toggleable.
>>

>>312696
Mis-identifying items is a result of low intelligence (your character's INT score, I'm not insulting you). Try looking at the same item with a higher INT character.

>>312697
An alternative newbie area should be available soon that takes all of these... quirks... into consideration. All I can ask for is your patience in this.

>>312698
Try the 'PLAYERKILL' command to toggle your PK flag ('help playerkill' in the MUD). Meanwhile I'll look into having it default toggled off. Those rules that pop up are the standard ones that come with CoffeeMUD, though. Most of them are common sense, but don't read too much into them if they contradict something we do.

Basically the thing's still pretty early alpha and I don't know why we're advertising for players so early, but it's still pretty fun if you can tolerate the constant inconsistencies intrinsic with early-development games.
>>
No. 2706 ID: 7eda8b

The town is totally broken, and doesn't really have anything to do with any quest as far as I can tell.

If you advertise this thing to people, and you totally are, it's just going to piss them off and make them not want to play when/if it actually gets turned into a non-irritatingly-broken game.

The option is intended to be there, you are just expected not to abuse it. It's like-- in real life, you are not supposed to murder people. Nothing except the fact that it's a rule and you'll be punished is stopping you from doing it.

>>312706
There's a bunch of quests in there, ask the shopkeeps.

>>312697

By quests, we didn't mean fetch quests or MUD quests. We meant actual /quest/s. It feels more like someone's generic fantasy town got built up and then slapped with a /tg/ label for... I dunno. Increased traffic, I guess. It doesn't feel /tg/ or tgchan or /quest/y at all, and it doesn't make any real references to them or have any connections to established settings besides a random Volto shopkeep and a street named Reaver street. That's not a theme, that's a shout out.

As for the 'realism' thing: The main problem is that you're working on the internet with at least pseudo-anonymous people and no realistic reprecussions for actions. Killing a person in real life makes you a dick and has all sorts of hideous moral consequences, killing a character in a MUD for shits and giggles has, comparatively, few problems and lots of trolling potential. It's sorta like putting a store's merchandise all by the door and setting up a sign that says 'We highly suggest that you buy these, but you don't actually have to.'

People do not play a MUD for gritty realism, especially not one based on a meme-laden gaming culture imageboard.

It seems you only visited Catarnia, which is indeed /quest/-unrelated. Any other zone is a product of a quest's author. Up until recently Catarnia's been the only newbie-friendly area. Driblis was kind enough to produce a newbie area that relates to a quest of the same name.

More tgchan content is being added daily and, as always, we encourage more quest authors to come and lend us a hand.
>>
No. 2732 ID: 73ad2b

>>312720
Indeed, I do not own nor run a quest, so therefore I cannot make a /quest/-related area. So, I merely made my own.

If you'd like a better example-
In the real world, it's possible to randomly punch strangers in the stomach. What stops us from doing this? The fact that we're not assholes, that's what.

I hate to say it, but Squeegy's handling of the MUD has hardly been admirable. Seeing the project as-is just makes me thing 'Awesome idea, terrible execution' - mostly on account of Squeegy's rather poor sense of what makes a good MUD, and his utter refusal to take any form of feedback. I've spoken with him; he really has a very egocentric notion of handling the MUD. Even in chat, he's prettymuch told people who've complained about the MUD's shortcomings something to the effect of: It's my MUD, I can do what I want with it, so if my random muggers in a newbie friendly area being able to one-hit kill skilled fighters with magic bugs you, well, neener neener neener it's my MUD.

There are so many things that should have been done differently, from the ground up. Some of the gridwork is labyrinthine. The MUD as a whole doesn't really feel as tightly integrated with tgchan as it sells itself for.

Right now, the only real thing it's got going for it is a neato race selection, a handful of cool players, and a not-bad built-in MUD system which, as I understand it, came as part of the package he built it with. So yeah.
>>

Not much can be done about that, but lately it has been toned down. Hopefully seeing posts like these have made him second guess the way he says things.

So yeah.

It's sort of a catch-22. tgchan has taken to denouncing the mud wholesale because of the drama and lack of content. The mud needs tgchan to be interested in it so it can receive additional tgchan-related content. Tgchan won't do that until it's already a tgchan game. And so on.

Someone's got to take the first step to break the cycle, and it probably won't be the guy everyone's complaining about. So the question is who? And what?

If you have ideas, share them. They've been pretty proactive about adding stuff from what little Ive seen.

Basically tgmud cant be tgmud without the tg, so help out even if it's just in constructive criticism.

I also don't get what you're talking about when you say 'sells itself for'. Well you're basically doing exactly what I wanted to do way back when this idea was proposed the first time, only you waited until I committed to someone else's version of the project - splintering the few players a successful small community MUD is going to possibly have and dicking over everyone who helped try to make tgmud better in spite of its flaws in the first place.

Oh, I was just trying to be helpful lol

My server's mobo is fucked right now but the replacement is on it's way. 2-3 weeks.

You could do that lol...
I worked and converted SWR to work with Gundam Wing, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star as well as a bunch of original settings

Oh look another shitty MUD that's ruined by ego problems.

Oh look some more idiot MUD players who are so lazy that they'd rather whine than make something that they'd want.

So I logged on earlier. There's... a whole bunch of nothing there now. Though for some reason my character still existed. In an empty void. Huh.

Did a splinter MUD ever get formed? The concept is at least something I could get behind.

That happens when the game is still in alpha. Locales get changed/deleted, and wherever your character last logged out was no longer a valid location. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, as an archon could easily teleport you... if one were online.

I dunno where TLE and John/Squeegy went. I got tired of the project leader trolling content creators, but if John ever gives over the MUD to TLE then I'll go back to it. It's kind of a shame, because I taught myself the in-game scripting language, and was in the process of making several interesting enemy MOB AIs with it, in addition to a Director AI to spawn in enemies and items, a la Left 4 Dead. It just wasn't worth the frustration.

I stopped doing the MUD area updaats because my whole area was crashing for some unkown reasons... And pretty much the same reasons Durandal gave.

I'd like to participate in it, but I'd need to start from scratch.

I'm still around, and I periodically check to make sure the MUD is still running. I wouldn't call it "dead" - it's... on life support, I guess. There's nothing physically stopping it from being active.

I wouldn't mind a revival of the concept, perhaps with some re-tooling. I don't know enough Java to really make meaningful changes to the code, and that manifested itself pretty acutely over the lifetime of the alpha.

Were we to do it all over again, a closed alpha would probably be a good idea. Open the proverbial doors when there's some well-developed content to consume, rather than frustrating the player base with chaos constantly.

Anyway, server's still up. I'm approachable if the current staff or newcomers want to discuss ideas and direction. My e-mail's included in this post.

Trouble is that you get everyone going "I'll give this a chance if it starts to work in spite of Squeegy." But then it doesn't actually work, because of Squeegy. You can also blame said people for not giving it a chance anyway, but you can't blame people for seeing which way the wind is blowing.

Is this idea still on?
It would be awesome if there was a MUD based on various quest settings!

It's my honor to announce (hopefully not prematurely), that it appears this idea is back on. It will be lead by the creative genius of Weaver, with a wide variety of content providers, and drawing on the crucial technical abilities of TLE. Seems like a recipe for awesome to me, but it quite literally just started, so don't be expecting much of anything... ever.

If you'd like to get in on this (and who wouldn't?) hope on to #RUBYMUD. (I think that's the link...)

>#RUBYMUD
Sorry to be the asshole here. But having someone like weaver, who's not really known for accepting opposing opinions, naming it after his own stuff doesn't make me optimistic about the whole thing.

>someone like weaver, who's not really known for accepting opposing opinions
I wasn't aware this is what I was known for.

And for what little it matters, I named it RubyMUD just so it would be identifiable from the original TGMUD, and because it's being made for the #rubyquest audience, not because I'm making it in my own image.

What do you mean "For #RubyQuest"? #tgchan people not allowed?

I'd never heard that either, but having worked with Squeegy, I'm not worried: it's probably physically impossible for Weaver to be worse. The project needs guidance, it needs an involved leader who's willing to work with and direct the actions of the content providers, and I think Weaver can do just that. Hell, we were settling some key options by way of a vote last night in IRC, so it's not like he's making all the decisions. But we do need someone to settle disputes and end deadlocks. That's what a leader is for. If your problem is that the project has a leader, then that's a bit silly, because without a leader absolutely nothing will be accomplished.

>>313304
Yes. That's exactly what it means. And if we see anyone from #tgchan we will chase you out with pitchforks and banhammers. On a less sarcastic note, no, of course not. That's stupid. Why would you even assume that?
>>
No. 3306 ID: bf1e7e

#tgchan is the same audience as #rubyquest anyway, the difference being that #tgchan is where people go to whine about reaver without whining TO reaver.

I kind of wanted to resurrect the old MUD with TLE, resetting all that we done and starting a new with the old formula (Central hub with all quest worlds connected. Sort of like Planescape).

But since Weaver yanked the whole MUD thing along with few very competent people, I guess I'll just toss that idea aside. Shame.

You act like this is some hostile takeover of which I am the sole executor. Like I barged in, grabbed everyone's work out of their loving hands, punched them in the face, and then sold it to foreigners at a premium.
