The others have remained at the tower, in the event of attack. But I have gone forward.
I must strike against Czar Anolei Bomba while there's still a chance. He won't be expecting a single man.

So safe and secure in his city-fortress. He has the power and the means that I require, but we could have settled this peaceably.
Until he attacked my allies.

To call the architecture of the seaside city of Tela Cruz "brutal" would be doing it a great act of understatement.

It's walled on all sides, and even the exit to its main piers is fitted with an enormous door the likes of which I have never seen.
I can't help but notice the city's banner has been vandalized.

The city is in some kind of military-run lockdown, but Coriander's scouts have reported three possible means of ingress:
1. The front gate is locked tight, but the numerous smaller doors in and out are obvious but difficult possibilities, if I can convince the guards or operators to allow me through somehow.
2. The doors to the seaport open more regularly when there is active trade. Though the lockdown has likely ceased that, Coriander's scouts have suggested there are possible means of entrance that undermine the main port authority, used mostly by refugees and smugglers.
3. Like all large cities, Tela Cruz pipes its waste away from the city center - here choosing instead to dump it straight into the sea. While it will not be pleasant or dignified, the sewers are likely all but unguarded, even in a time of heavy security.

I may as well decide now.

We're part of one of the races of man. Try your luck on schmoozing some of those door guards first. If that doesn't work, I'd actually advocate taking the sewer route, because if we're caught entering the city via a smuggler's route we'll likely be branded a criminal if the infiltration should go south (and it will).

Going through the sewers means that once you're inside you will smell of the sewers, and anyone with a nose will be able to tell that you're not supposed to be there. Also people will be able to smell you without seeing you, limiting our stealth options.

Honestly I wasn't expecting the city to be in such lockdown. We didn't get a declaration of war or anything, so I didn't think they would be preparing to fend off an army. Coriander only has like a half dozen fighters; this would be preparation to fend off a hundred enemy troops at least. Someone else MUST be fighting them.

Head over to a side door to speak to a guard, telling them you were just here on a shopping trip and noticed that they were all locked up! Ask what's going on, and if it's possible for you to be let in to buy stuff.
>>
No. 453499 ID: 9c8e90

I'd rather take the smuggler's route. Muschio is not good at talking to people outside of highly formal affairs. He simply doesn't have enough points in Charisma or Bluff to talk his way through a lockdown. And sewers are gross, man.

Seconding this.
Also, I'd like to know if (and how much) the townspeople know about us. Should we be concerned about being spotted and identified by a guard, or even a commoner? I'd rather we keep our presence hidden from the Czar as long as possible.
>>
No. 453510 ID: ecfcdc

Well dignity is one of our most important tools, so that rules out the sewers. The front gates would be nice if we had a good cover story, but we don't. Seems to me that the docks are the way.

When we get inside, or perhaps even before, we want to figure out who vandalized the banner. They could be potential allies.

Thirded. Also, I know it's a longshot, but if possible we should see about recruiting some vagabonds as a temporary force of allies.
Whether a resistant movement or plain brigands, either can have their uses in a coup.

Agreeing with this. Try to head in through the docks, spend our initial time gathering intelligence, focusing on discovering any resistance movements and possibly allying with them.

Might be planning a bit far ahead, since we're not even in the city yet, but just throwing it out there.
>>
No. 454388 ID: 1d7721

i vote for testing the waters. see how far you can get without getting arrested in the gates, if that doesn't work see about finding some smugglers. sewers don't become you, that's the last resort

The docks are... uneasily quiet.
I don't see a single dockhand or sailor out and about on the pier. It's possible they're all working aboard their vessels, but there aren't many of those.

Hm. I suppose I could approach the dock gate, or the station house near the dock gate. Alternately I could try one of the ships or smaller boats here.

WHERE IS YOUR STEALTH GEAR MAN

GET OUT OF THERE BEFORE SOMEONE RECOGNIZES YOUR SECRET IDENTITY

But in all seriousness, I am surprised you didn't opt for a change of clothing. Class is one thing, but being recognizable from miles away as someone of your stature will probably do you no favours.

On the other hand, the smugglers might take a better interest in someone who seemingly reeks of coin, so it might work out in the end.

I suggest starting with the ships first - perhaps we will run into someone who could inform us on the basics of how the lockdown works and we can work from there.
>>

Did you have the good sense to bring some money along? If we find smugglers we could pay them to smuggle *us* in.
>>
No. 456257 ID: 2fd111

>>456256
You know, that's just crazy enough that is might work. Using diplomacy or a good coverstory will likely separate us from our weapons/equipment, and the sewers will separate us from the ability to sneak entirely. But being smuggled in won't lose us anything. Worth a shot if we can make it happen.
>>
No. 456263 ID: 9c8e90

Remember guys, as of the post-High Roller patch, Muschio only brings along what we reasonably expect him to have. So if we fuck this up now, there's no fixing it later.

Well I expect that Muschio brought along some money at least, and some rope, since we keep telling him that adventurers always need that. I bet that before he left the bug kingdom, they let him have another rapier, too, that he just forgot to tell us about. Which he would doubtless have brought along with him crossed fingers
>>
No. 456295 ID: 03e26b

>>456263
Even if he didn't bring some rope, he should be able to find some fairly easily. We're in the docks. Rope is a thing they use to keep ships from floating away.
As for weaponry, not bringing along at least a dagger in this day and age is just asking for trouble. I'm sure Muschio isn't that dense. But we should avoid shanking people for awhile yet.

Anyway, check around the ships for signs of life. It's easier to strike up conversation with a dockworker than a guard. At worst we'll be told to piss off.
>>

>>
No. 456412 ID: fbd8d6

>>456263
I think "what we reasonably expect him to have" extends to any portable item Muschio owns that we can think of a good reason for him carrying. The "patch" was so Weaver can focus on plot and character development instead of inventory management.

Let's consider our options, Muschio. The docks are going to be useless as long as the lockdown is on. If Tela Cruz's rulers aren't complete dolts, they probably know about your alliance with Coriander, and guards will be on the lookout for you. There's no cover either, so sneaking up on the guards is a no-go.

The sewers are going to be your best bet. Once you're in, pretend to be a beggar. Not only will no-one notice you're covered in shit, most people won't notice you at all.

Very well. I'll continue to search the docks.
After wandering for a bit through the small fleet of abandoned boats docked here, I finally find one with movement: a modest cargo vessel named the Djebel Amilah.

It's a small craft but it seems to float particularly high in the water. I manage to catch the attention of a non-human crewman on the deck.

"Hello there!"

Basically, try to intimidate him a bit, since he's easily scared, and ask him what the situation here is, and for transport inside the city.

Possibility 1: He is a terrible spy and of no use to us beyond getting into the city. Use both carrot and stick. Terrify him, but keep him well payed enough to not run away and try and get us killed to save his own hide.
Possibility 2: He is actually a very good spy still employed by the high roller, and as such we cannot trust him beyond getting into this city. Keep him terrified, and well payed enough so that he won't run away to the high roller until this is done. Then scare/pay him even harder so that he won't inform said high roller of your involvement here for as long as possible.

Okay, how about this:
If he doesn't help you get into the city, you'll mill around outside his boat until you figure out another way in, for however long that takes, which might take a very... very long time.
And if he decides to try to run away, you'll follow him until you come up with another idea.
You have nothing else really going on right now, (well, you do, but he doesn't know that), and you have no problem just taking a few weeks off to make his life a constant waking nightmare.

So why don't we just skip all that, and he helps us out, and then he can run off somewhere else?

Poison? We aren't poison. We're FIRE. Fire that forged new bonds between a nation divided. Fire that rekindled that spirit of a dieing kingdom. Fire that acts as a beacon for nearly every race on this continent. And, yes, fire that has burned those who worked against it in the past. It is your choice, Nino. You can direct this flame away from you, and bask in its warmth and the riches it leaves in its wake. Or you can stand in its way and burn.

and then if he tries to sail away, get onto the ship somehow. I trust your acrobatic abilities, and a dock is likely covered in stuff that we could use to climb up if we must. And then, once you are standing on his boat, you can remind him that running wasn't one of the options you gave him. intimidation is your greatest weapon against Nino, it seems.

Then do what you said and say 'Running isn't one of the options I gave you.', and continue speaking. Third, if he tries to turn his crew on you, turn them on him. Tell them he just rejected the the largest payday they will likey ever see. If they don't believe you , show them 'a small sample of what's to come'.

I suggest we try painting your nose in a way that makes you look like an anthropomorphic bird. And don't crossdress. Not that there's anything wrong with crossdressing, but you just can't pull it off. A headgear made of feathers would also help and tie your jacket around your waist. That should take care of your most distinctive identifiers.

I am as confused as anyone.
Let me think, what DO I know about Sprites?

Well, they're magical creatures, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and their most distinguishing characteristics are their glimmering skin, their ragged mouths and enormous eyes, and their mystical affinity. They're said to be linked with the same kind of arcane forces that channel Monster Portals. They're not inherently violent but they're not particularly bright either.

I also know that there's nowhere even remotely nearby that should be inhabited by them in any significant numbers. Tela Cruz is not a Sprite city.
Except... clearly, it is.

Course of action?

When exactly was the last time Tela Cruz was publicly available to walk around in and a lot of people interacted with the city? If never, then it probably was a big secret, but isn't this dictator recent? He must have kicked all the regular inhabitants out and put sprites in, or even more terrible, every citizen was turned into a sprite, even if it seems impossible to your mind.

Because I don't think the dictator could easily genocide all his people or imprison them quickly enough without this shit getting out, or even that all the guards would comply unless he systematically replaced them with very loyal guards or sprites. So, is there any connection monster portals (and the sprites you say they're connected to) are connected to the nature of a mortal life?

Do you have a weapon? Kill or subdue a sprite and make a disguise out of its clothing. Then turn your Nino mask inside out to make the pupils weird like a sprite and plasticy to match their face.
>>
No. 466570 ID: f2c20c

Okay, if there's no humans here, where'd they go? Maybe everyone got polymorphed into them? A Monster Portal experiment gone wrong? Or did the citizens get used as fuel to summon them? Oh god, what if Sprites are the native inhabitants in the world beyond Monster Portals?!

I have no idea how the damn things even work.

At any rate, if we're going to move around in the city then you should try to keep a... low profile... fuck, you stick out like a sore thumb. Try to get one of the Sprites on his own somewhere private and interrogate them, to find out what's going on.

So, unless this was done a while ago off screen, drink one of those babies, lose the limp, regrow some spleen, and well, okay, the hand's too late to do anything about, but you could have maybe slowed it down long enough to have it uncursed. It can at least still regrow skin over the stump to prevent infection and stop the pain.

If THAT is not an option, and you must move now, go along the walls slowly, through alleyways, and so on with the highest priority that you REMAIN OUT OF SIGHT until you reach your destination. Speaking of which, what IS your destination?
An armory for weapons, a clothes store for disguises, a contact Commander Koriander has for you to meet on the inside, a library to read up on current events inside the city so you are not ambushed like you were at seeing Sprites?

At least it should be easy for someone of your sly wit to bluff your way around, Muschio. On the other hand, a smart ruler would anticipate that weakness. Ask if there's any sort of identity or authorization thing people need to do any particular stuff around here.

My main concern is how powerful is his magic in a certain regard. That regard being mind reading.

This could be manipulation through the Sprite to get you to lower your guard and not kill him.

Considering this possibility, ask the Sprite you want to meet the Czar for help healing your hand. Afterwards, two options-he becomes your friend and you let him live, or his guard is lowered and you kill him.

Way too early to tell, though, so let's move forward and try to meet the Czar to open up more options.

A worthy consideration. My plans for handling the Czar have changed, by my intentions to confront him have not. Either way, until I can learn more about him, preferably in person, I can't really move forward. So as before, that is my priority.

I would keep grilling her about the czar, but I think we've gotten all the info we can get out of her.
So... pretending to be one of the czar rare guests probably isn't an option, although with his population a bunch of CHARMING sprites and this control of the city, his guards on the inside might be lax, making it easier to sneak into the palace. Though, if I recall, the city's banner has been vandalized, so there might be some kind of resistance or rebellion that we could seek out for more information.

I vote that if we find the giant magic portal of sprite summoning we engage in standard portal-pushing-over activities.

If we ever confront the czar in person, how do we intend to deal with his magic.. stuff? Preferably somehow get him to heal our hand before we announce our intention to murder him. Maybe we could convince him we intend to see his partnership? Unless he knows our alliance with Coriander. I don't remember.

And finally:

Well I guess we should head on down to face the Czar.

Since we're heading down a main road though, if we had to discard our weaponry to sneak in I would highly suggest picking up some kind of weapon that we could conceal (even if we don't have money with the shop keepers being sprites we could probably sneak one out).

Also might be worth picking up a concealable mirror as well, just in case magic can be reflected.

Skulk around the palace; look for a weak point allowing you inside like a laundry chute or a metal grate used for sewage and the like.

Here's an alternate possibility:
Is there a magic shop nearby?
Maybe a wizard or witch withstood the Czar's spell, and maybe he or she can help you?

Just throwing this out there unless time is at a premium, then forget it.

Let us try to reaffirm our priorities.
0: Get out of the city alive. You don't want to do this yet, but this should always be a stated goal. Never be in a situation where you cannot escape alive.
1: Fix your hand if possible. To hell with this city and everyone in it, get your hand healed above all else.
2: Control of the city. The more direct the control, the better. Keep the Czar alive if possible, though. Ideally, you would find a way to steal his soul or magically bind him to your will. Failing that, a fealty oath. We want him beneath us if possible. If you cannot control him, kill him and take control. If such a method is untenable, or would preclude regaining your hand, he can be an ally.
3: Removal of threats. If he will not ally with you at the very least, he must die so as not to oppose you. Hunt down assassins if any are present, and richly reward nino to keep him out of trouble. Give him a large house or storefront, or just replace that barrel of wine tenfold. If you can, of course.
4: Gain sprites for your army. Natural magic, cheery personality, easy to control, AND bad puns.
5: gaining spoils of war, whatever they may be.

Question, Boss.

Why do we need to assasinate the czar? if he has entire appendage restoring powers, I would think he would make a much more powerful ally than a corpse.

If his death /is/ necissary, then I've got a great plan for you.

*Go in asking to meet the czar to request a restoration of your hand.
*convince to restore hand
*use newly regained right hand to slice the bloody sucker's neck open.
*PROFIT

two birds with one stone, and gives you a legit reason to be going to his palace and let you past the guards.
No one expects a man requesting their hand be restored also be an assassin.

It's the perfect crime and then some.

Sure, a little coldblooded, but that should be no problem for an evil mastermind like yourself.

So boss, whaddaya say?

Ask her if he turned the whole city into sprites, did he spritify the whole city at once or did he round up a ton of people, spritify them, and then round up more until everyone was sprites. The former means he's too powerful for us to directly confront right now: huge range, doesn't need to be present to do things to you, homeground advantage, may have reinforcements. The latter opens the possibility that he missed some people, who could be more helpful to us if we were to get in contact with them.

There may also be scrying enchantments around, which makes me a little apprehensive about just marching down the main road.

(also, re: our hand, if it comes out that we are unable to get a new one from this guy, it's still possible that Ona can come up with something, I don't think we've asked her about it yet.)

To summon all those sprites from the monster portal, does he have a ton of mannequins? Or do you think he uses the old mana system? Does he make his own mannequins? Or maybe he just magics them into existence. If its either of the first two, then we may be able to turn that in an advantage.

I must admit, the tower that lies ahead is rather ominous. If the Czar is as powerful a man as the situation would suggest, I must tread lightly. I should consider my actions once inside, and if I must turn to violence, not tip my hand before the time is right.

"Tell me, is there a magic shop in town?"
>"No, I don't think so."
"Are there any magic users around that aren't Sprites?"
>"Not that I know of. Don't know of anyone in town besides you who's not a Sprite. See when the city shut down we kinda stopped letting people in, so we don't really get a lot of visitors!"

My preparations were rushed, due to my expedient departure from Salamander Tower, necessitated by the potential threat there. But now with so many limited options in town, it seems I've little to no further recourse for preparation. Indeed, perhaps you are right: Perhaps I should find a way to gain entry to the Palace, and confront the Czar myself.

Just stride to the front door of the tower. If everyone has been turned into a sprite (except the guards, it appears,) and the city is in lock-down, anyone that is inside the walls MUST have a reason to be there - So just keep a princely air, cocky but civil, and suggest by words and poise that you belong inside.

Alternatively, ask the sprite if she's seen anyone besides the guards that are not sprites; you could just jump one of said guards (they seem about the same height, and appear to be wearing masks.)

saying it again.
1. Use missing hand as excuse to want to see the Czar. It's très legit. They can see you hand gone, they're not gonna question your motive.
2. Get hand restored. Ambidexterous is no excuse for having only one hand. Besides, if the masked creep comes back, you know, that orange gnoll the long lost orange fang? that led to tisolmer's facecharring, you're gonna need it.
3. kill him while you're inside. If you can do it in a private area, you might even be able to claim an assassin jumped in and killed him, and you just barely escaped yourself. Or you could after you get your hand back, thank him, "leave," crawl around the tower's outside and pocket-crossbow him from outside a window.

if it fails, hopefully the sprites aren't particularly alliegant to him, and we don't have a town-sized magic-using zergling rush on our hands, but no matter what way we kill him that's a potential problem.

Ask friendsprite what her opinion of the Czar is, other than that he is a mighty magic man. I don't think we've gotten a straight answer on that yet. Maybe ask if he is nice, too.

Also, do you think you can manage without us for a few minutes to a few hours? we should probably check in on the others, and ask Ona what she knows about spritification, if anything. maybe that bug scholar guy too. We have (somewhat unreliable) instant long-range communication, we have no reason to willingly walk into the lair of a very powerful mage without consulting what resources we have.

One last question/suggestion Muschio: Did you ever put a shard of us/the orb in yourself?

Wait, we're cut off? There are bits of us out there that we can't feel or use? Oh gods, suddenly I know how your hand feels!

We have a lot of options to bluff our way through. Like using their own words and presumably orders against them. "No-one gets in." "Yes, my name is Nowan, now let me in."

If they ask about weapons you can show them your missing hand and say "Don't worry, I'm unarmed"

But we need a backup plan. Assume they are at least as smart as a kobald, and as such can follow orders well. Like, if they try to take us captive or kill us, say to friendsprite "Could you do me a favor and close your eyes for a minute?" then kill the guards. a well-placed wrist-crossbow shot can take one down, preferably the one with his visor down, if the one guy doesn't drop his. Then get your knife and kill him, too. then start shouting "Oh gods, how could this happen!" ask friendsprite to find help and also tell us her name while we go tell the czar that someone is killing his men!

But yeah, this guy is clearly the talkative type, and feels as if there's no real threat from you. So get him rambling for sure.

Well, we may as well hear his request. We're out in the open with no backup in front a powerful mage, and that's a bad situation to be in. We should simply look to keep our skin for now. We may as well tell him we have no intention of dying, since he doubtless knows that already. But it might also be interesting to hear why he wants us dead, if he'll volunteer that information.

Ask him to name one time that offer has worked. Further, if that was his bargaining method, he would have killed you already if you had what he wants on your person. If he could use magic to force us, he would have done that to begin with. He is pretending to have an advantage he obviously does not have. And if, by some twist of fate, he DOES have the ability to do whatever he threatens, our actions cannot possibly put us in a worse situation than we are currently in. laugh at him, then shoot your wrist crossbow at his face.

Then don't even pretend to be surprised when it gets deflected by some magical barrier. Just try it anyway, because the off chance that he isn't prepared for it is worth the probability that it will do nothing.

We've seen he has guards. He has military might which he can use against you right now. So, the first possibility isn't true.

He wants something from you. He could've marched up to your doorstep with an army of sprites instead of sending that assassin in the first place. Yet he chose the sneaky route. Also, we've seen that the assassin is an incredibly powerful man, yet he didn't directly harm ANY of our men during the theft attempt.

He doesn't want to harm you OR your men. He attacked your allies with a small force of expendable troops, but didn't manage to do any serious damage. He didn't want to kill any of your allies either.

Now, here we have a man who acts like an enemy but refuses to do harm to us. My conclusion is that he is the enemy of our enemy, but cannot bring himself to cooperate willingly with us. Perhaps he fears the power of our common foe? That cooperation with us would reveal his hand and attract an army he cannot face?

Sincerely, pick out a random order from these events as your battle strategy...

-Throw the orb at him to confuse him. If a piece or two can stick to him, then we voices can bother him enough to give you an opening.

-Keep talking to him, trying to verbally spar until you are close enough to kiss him, which in turn becomes your opening. Yes, I started that suggestion, but not out of shipping or lust. More accurately, Muschio, when you act stupid, things work out in your favor. Really, I see that throughout the entire story; hell, I could go further, and say pet him heavy while kissing him. Really, the story works in your favor when insanity happens. So, why not smooch to deathy the Czar?

-Flick your hand, challenge him to a battle of magic-your Arcane Fire vs. his Twilight Sparkle.
Given this option, have you learned other magic since volcanically erupting at your base, or just still that? Like healing? Or a force field?

Muschio, if you escape from this, please make a mental note to have your hidden crossbow upgraded so it can switch between two or even three different bolts. Then make a special bolt that has a shard of us for a tip. Make it easier to weaponize your subconscious than throwing the whole orb at them.

also, I think we're forgetting as a whole that muschio is not some great fire mage. He can use his thumb as a lighter, and ONE TIME he exploded a mountain. I doubt he could easily do that again. maybe if he was really angry. like, if we told him that we convinced the kobolds to say "~nya" after every sentence, or that dompag was smitten with him, or that we freed the princess while he wasn't looking.

Throwing the orb is a terrible idea. Yup boss, she's gone. Escaped into the countryside. Probably halfway back to her usurping, treasonous, parent murdering father by now.

And then the whole rebellious kingdom will be informed of your base's whereabouts, which will then be raided, leveled, and its inhabitants slain. Dompag and Geppa, Ona, the 'bolds, even your little personal fangirl Finnie. Soon too of Ridder's, for being loyal to you. Everything you ever hoped or lived for, everything you've ever strived to gain in this world, everyone who's ever cared about you and that you've ever cared about, gone in a moment.

Try stabbing Masky with the purply pointy end of the staff you are currently holding. If possible, try using your hand to flick a flame and light the purple smoke. Maybe a chain reaction can buy time or cause Masky hp loss?

I would say hold the staff with your mouth while lighting it, but then this thread would explode with shipping jokes between you and the staff sitting in a tree, B-L-O-W-J-O-B. So, no, try lighting the purple stuff or wield the staff as a makeshift sword.

We know your goals, and we will see them through. But to do that, we need to be away from whatever is locking us in your body. You getting out alive is still the next highest thing on the list, but if you die, and we are still here, no-one learns what you learned here. No-one has your/our guidance. And no-one survives when that masked guy comes knocking again.

Most immediate plans should be getting the hell out of here, by any means you are able. We might be able to take the czar in combat, even with his guards around. but not with this guy, he could take on you and a warrior king at the same time, and walked out with less damage than you did. We can hope that friendsprite arrives to help us in some way, but I wouldn't count on it.

Even if we manage to escape, then what? The Czar regroups, we never get the chance to get this close again, we surely have an assassin hounding our every move and if he wasn't bluffing, our friends could be wiped out before we could return.

If there is any way to stop the Czar now, we should probably try. I still think it is a sound plan to try and take him hostage to still the hand of the Pretender. Hopefully the Czar winds up being a coward and the Pretender winds up being hopelessly loyal to his master...

For the sake of a single burst of good fortune I'm not sure it's worth continuing this fight. The assassin is still a formidable opponent of unknown skills, and our only real defense may falter at a single word from the czar. It may be more advisable to take advantage of the confusion to flee, and use the knowledge that whatever the assassin uses seems to be countered by the magic of a sprite to start trying to identify what we're up against exactly, allowing us to come up with a genuine strategy.

If we can get this sprite to come with us then so much the better.

Of course, if we do have a more substantial upper hand than merely 'not getting vaporised in one hit right then' then by all means, press the advantage.

Boss, do you have a canteen of water on you? I just had an idea but it's one hell of a longshot. She seems to be one hell of a gifted sorceress to not even deflect, but straight up block that attack. So I figure breaking up water to it's base components , oxygen and hydrogen(read fuel), should be child's play for her. See where I'm going with this? Only problem is figuring out how to tell her to do that. The way I think about it, there are four ways this could work assuming we can tell here to breakup the water.

1: We try to drench the Czar and the Pretender gets in the way, getting him[it?]self drenched. She does her thing, we light him, he is incinerated.

2: 1, but it serves a little more that a distraction instead of incinerating him.

3: We successfully drench and incinerate the Czar.

4: We successfully drench and light up the Czar. While the pretender is trying to put out the Czar we kill the pretender.

This is all assuming we can get her to do this, and I'm not sure how to do that. You're the charismatic one ,boss! You can work that one out!

Ok soooo, where are you running to? If your running further into the castle try and find an armory or something because we are really really out gunned right now. If we go with this we will have to fight mister crazy strong but if we can take him down then we don't have to worry about him anymore, and we are in a better position to take down the Czar.
If your running back into town I suggest trying and losing the crazy killer on your ass by sticking to the alley ways, however if we do this, yes we don't have to fight him but he will still be after us, and we will be in a worse spot to take down the Czar because it may not be as easy getting back into the castle a second time around.
whatever choice you choose though you may or may not also have to deal with a lot of guards as well as a crazy killer (not to sure about the guards. they don't seem all that useful from what I've seen so far)

WELP! Guess what? I actually have a PLAN!
First off, dodge around the city for a bit. Hide in buildings, make them look for you.
Keep this up until they either tire out or think you left. Then, once they are once again resuming life as normal, kidnap the whole damn town. They seem pretty docile, and would make a GREAT addition to your little cave setup as servants and the like!
Alternatively, get the FUCK outta dodge and prepare for a massive seige immediately.
This guy has made it QUITE clear he is not gonna be taking any shit at all and this is a very important thing to remember.

So do sprites just do this sort of thing for fun?
I mean... magical creature... is it just like tag sparring to them?

Anyways, clearly, Nibbles either actively holds no loyalty at all to this Czar whatsoever, or else is too naive for it to apply, thon's just been doing what thon was told.

If the last is true, instigating a sprite uprising (or a less obviously hostile equivalent, so that they go along with it) may be possible, and would be a force not even the powerful Czar could match.

Our options currently are an attempted flight back to base, where his forces /will/ follow us, but it gives us /some/ regroup time, in which we can prepare and perhaps ask Commander Coriander, and maybe Ridder if the trip is short enough, for reinforcements. Maybe ask them if they know why the amulet we have is so important to the Czar, it could be a strong weapon we could use against him or a device of substantial magical assistance, like clairvoyance or incredible speed increase.

Option two, we escape the tower into the city, where we attempt to disappear and do the riot plan, unless something better presents itself, which knowing our odd duality luck, is about as probable as not.

Hmm. Perhaps, although they've been reduced to simpletons, the citizens still have some subconscious awareness of what was done to them, and so a similarly latent desire for defiance or vengeance? If so, this "game" ruse might well serve! Tell them hitting the black and white guy is worth 10 points, and the Czar is worth 7, with bonus points for how hard you hit them. Winner gets prizes, such as the aforementioned candy.

Ooh, but we don't have candy. Hmm. If they fall for this, you'd best have the next stage of the ruse prepared. When they come to say who's winner, ask them to say who hit the most/hardest. Hopefully, they'll argue. If not, say you need to take the names of the best, uh, five. That's assuming you don't just scarper in the meanwhile, which is the foremost plan at the moment.

I agree with this, but as a possibility for certain conditions. If Mr. Yin-Yang Marble Cookie Mask is after you, and surrounded by sprites, then you should shout out loud this idea. If no one gives chase, though, and you are both alone, then you should ask Nibble one of two things.

Either stop firing lasers so as to not attract attention, or say she has won the game, and this is a post-game interview, where you ask questions for the audience as to how she got her powers.

For all we know, thon (never was confirmed as female, correct?) might have dimension door, blink step, or teleportation magic too. Or at least some sharable invisibility.
Sprites are highly magical, and clearly practice said magic as play, similar to how dogs wrestle. So Nibbles must have more up thon's sleeve than just barrier and hyper beam.

Though more magic blasts would definitely help as distractions in our escape.

actually, wait no. we need reinforcements first. Quite a few, actually.
I change my suggestion for target destination to "Miss Coriander's"
It'd be great if we could contact Ridder too, but he's out of reach for the moment. We should ask him next time we see him about some way of contacting him quickly, in case of emergency. I'm sure he must have something on hand.

Meanwhile, we orbfellows need to warn to evacuate The Vault. It's the first place Stabby McDeathclaws is going to head once we go missing. Or if we ditch/hide the amulet somewhere as a last resort effort, so Bomba doesn't have it even if he kills and loots us.
In any case, any result involving Bomba not getting the amulet involves our base being raided, and any situation where he does get it still has a pretty high likelihood of him doing it just for kicks and giggles.

Well, obviously, stand between the sprite and the ying-yang marble cookie mask. Then yell, YOU SHALL NOT PASS. Therefore, you both will die, and you will be revived superpowered if literature is anything to go by.

Seriously, assuming you are moving in real time, and knowing how heartless a creature you are Muschio, attempt a plan where the sprites distract Ying-Yang while you slip behind him and kill the Czar.

One more thing, you have to assess whether the marble cookie can read these orb thoughts like you can. Once you ascertain, then, maybe you can turn it around into your advantage. Just a thought.

We're safe for now, and the troops need warning, because Stabbystabbers O'Killbeams and his all-too-malicious master will most definitely ransack the base to search for the amulet, if they haven't already been doing so while we were away.

Not to mention Coriander needs to be informed of the enemy's goals and of the pendant, both so that she may prepare for any impending threats, and so that together we may ascertain his greater schemes. Perhaps she may have an idea what it is, and ideas for its usage to our own devices. Especially if it can be weaponized or used for scrying or other informative-type uses about what Bomba's next move is.

Clearly something worth all this trouble, especially to someone already very strong with magic, must be quite the powerful artifact, and I can't imagine it wouldn't be useful if we could figure out what it does.

Therefore, other than establishing our immediate location, I'd say communication is our highest priority.

I think that is a safe assumption on our location. On our way back to base we can kill 2 birds with one stone. We should go east to the Mesa and tell the bugs about the Czar. He sent the assassin, he is our common enemy.

Or do we go west, try to get our bearings from the mountainhome landmark, and try to acquire transport. Do we have money for transport/supplies?

I would like to introduce ourselves to them or investigate the ruins to the north, but we really don't have time for that... Unless we are at the northern end of the forest and it's right there.

I guess for now we have to wait a little bit to see what direction the sun moves, we have no bearing. See what our companion has on her or if she can find out where we are exactly, also, we owe her some candy.

I take a moment to reflect in detail on my dire situation.

Czar Anolei Bomba of Tela Cruz clearly has me at a disadvantage. He is a powerful magic user and knows much about my operation, though I'm not sure how. The Czar has, for some reason, turned the populace of his city into Sprites, and restricted public access and trade, perhaps in part to disguise this fact.
The dangerous assassin who I've confronted twice now appears to be in his employ, and neither of them have any qualms about ending my life.
Arguably most peculiar of all is his obsession with that strange amulet I first found in Red Fang's lair, which his assassin attempted to steal -- and in the process, caused the explosion which harmed Tislomer. The same symbol appeared on his walls. There must be something greater at work here. No man would go to such lengths for a mere trinket.

Further, the Czar seemed to be under the impression I knew about the significance of his plans already, which contributed to his impetus to kill me. So I'm already a step behind.

All of this is food for thought. However, I must focus on my two most immediate concerns:
1. I'm currently lost. I should no doubt seek civilization and a return to my base of operations, but there are no paths within this desolate and misty forest. There are two large landmarks nearby, one a singular mountain and the other a conjoined range, both marked with paths and distant lights through the gloom. I may wish to head towards one of them.
2. If what the Czar said is true, the Vault and all my comrades could be in danger. I should contact them through the Orb now that I'm clear of the city's magical interference, but to whom should I transfer my attentions?

Keep calm Finnie, this is not the most proper of times to panic. Yes, we need you ASAP at the Vault, but make sure to keep yourselves safe - if the Czar is anything like he says he is, he might have a little more forward knowledge than we'd find comfortable. He might've set up a trap for all of our split groups for an easy win. If at all possible, some quick recruiting might be in order.

We must also not forget that there is a defensive force at our gates, but, strictly speaking, they are not OUR forces - Bomba subterfuging them into being his attacking force isn't very probable, but might be possible, especially for a caster, of which he seems to be plentiful nowadays.

As for Dompag and Geppa... sigh, this isn't good. We promised to leave them in garrison at the Tower, and they're not that keen on splitting up. We'll have to get a better feel on how matters are proceeding there.

Well, given the situation, we have a couple of things to keep in mind.
1: We seem to have aquired a magic user.
2: We still have that magical ore. Maybe some weapons or attacks buffers sould be created out of the stuff, however that works.

To repel the attack, the witch doctor should give everyone buffs, if they can, by taking their blood. Perhaps there is a general to provide a buff by using a shard of the Sphere of Infinite Psyche in the magicks and thus hopefully providing a buff to everyone with the shard and empowerment to the shard itself.

The staff at the Vault can fight alongside the men already stationed there, and when Muschio and the Sprite get there, they can fight additionally.

As for Muschio, he can hopefully use the sprite as a magical jetpack.

In the meantime, the sprite will have to be made loyal and in more control of its faculties.

In short, lots to do. Get on it.

There's more to this than a mere army. The masked being that withered Muschio's hand works for the Czar and is in all likelihood on its way to the Vault. In the past, it's shown an ability to slip past the heaviest of guards, so I don't think Hookdon's men alone will be an adequate defense.

We need another line of defense. Do Wes and Babrakus know how to make traps? At the very least that could buy us some time. Meanwhile, we need you and Ona to devise some kind of magical protection or detection against the masked being.

Incidentally, any news about the crystals?
>>
No. 591634 ID: 9ddf68

well the thing is if the Czar attacks with his army then Yeah I believe the army out front will be fine, or at the very least thin the Czar's numbers a bit. The real worry is the assassin the Czar has with him. Guy is crazy powerful, knows magic, and from the one time we saw the inside of his head he's also a bit crazy so if he shows up talking things out will not be an option. Oh and the assassin is the crazy mask guy that took Muschio's hand.

Speaking of Muschio he's god only knows where so the good news is the enemy most likely doesn't know where he is, the bad news is we don't know where he is, the meh news is he isn't alone but the person he's with isn't all there in the head but is really good with magic... maybe not two traits you want to have together in a person but them the brakes.

as for the amulet it's the necklace that Muschio has that despite us checking the damn thing over and over again and it always coming up as nothing more then fancy jewelry, seems to be the Czar's sole desire for reasons we're not to sure of at the time, but if the Czar thinks that muschio came back here with the trinket odds are he'll try to attack. Oh and the crazy assassin guy has some weird teleporting power we've seen him use once so watch out for that.

A secondary line of passive defense will be very useful indeed, especially since we have... established that Sprites are capable of teleportation spells. The one we nabbed might not have had the skill for a precise teleportation, but there are many more in Bomba's city.

It might be prudent to inform Hookdon's men about a possible attack or infiltration attempt, too. Nothing overly specific, just make them stay on their toes.

A status report would be nice too, I suppose. :)

We need to shore up our defenses, see if Ona can set up any serious-mode magical barriers, and having Babrakus reinforce the doors and/or make armor for everybody couldn't hurt.

Those humans aren’t trust worthy. they look like a treacherous lot and they got no respect. listen up Pendle here’s a plan.

Step one, make sure everyone is inside. (worried about Babrakus here)
Step two, stick the Mimic, Emmy, and the odds in either Muschio’s room or with the forge.
Step three, send denlings to search for Muschio. he’s in some dead looking forest by a lone mountain and a mountain range (we’re fairly sure its to the north west) if they can’t find him in a few days have them return, we’ll have a better idea by then.
STEP FOUR, (and this is the important bit) take all of that unrefined peregast and scatter that stuff everywhere in the Vault, the only place where we want it not to be is with our magic creatures.

oh and then I guess everyone should grab some sort of weapons. and remind the boss to show you the amulet next time you see him. your suppose to be our resident smart fact guy now, right? should of had you look into it.

The Czar may be sending a city sized invasion force to the Vault to recover a amulet that was left here when he sent an assassin to raid us. They will kill anything they find. He built this force by transforming the population of Tela Cruz into sprites. If you think you can make anything useful out of the peregast within a very short amount of time that will help us survive this onslaught, continue your work. Also our workers should focus on building whatever is practical for the upcoming confrontation. In the meantime, someone must alert the Red Mesas and Malto’s allies in the elven ruins of the current situation and report their response. If they cannot support us now they may be the Czar’s next victims. These soldiers that are defending the Vault now may be vulnerable to the same magic that has enslaved Tela Cruz, they may not be as helpful as we hoped, be on guard but do not alert them to our suspicion. Malto has fought the Czar but was forced to flee with a hapless sprite which has teleported them to an unknown location. We suspect that he is in the dead woods some distance to the west of the vault. We need someone to relay this information to Red Mesa and Ridder. Who shall it be?

We need something to rout an incoming army. Some weapon that will leave a myriad of soldiers broken and wandering aimlessly before they reach the battlefield. We will need to kill this Czar. He won't stop to chat next time we face him, but we almost got him with the dart today. He was mortified, vulnerable, we might need to hit the coward with something anti-magic will disregard, but he'll need to be unfocused: trapped.

Agreed, but we be careful not to alert Hookdon's soldiers if they're really here to betray us, but maybe we need to have some faith in him, we really do have a track record of jinxing things. But really we should be focused on drawing battle plans unless there is something we can get out of the ore that's worth the day or so it'll take for the Czar to send another wave of sprites. It's likely he will send the Assassin after the Boss so he might not accompanying the forces meant to raid the vault. Does anyone in the vault know how the Czar was transforming people into sprites? Is it reversible?

Also, considering our enemies seem to be totally invulnerable to magical attacks, but seem to be vulnerable or at least surprised by physical blows and projectiles, maybe we could come up with some sort of poison dart that they can't dodge next time or some other way to circumvent this barrier thing the assassin has.

Muschio you ass, why didn't you go prepared to kill the Czar in the first place. Being unexpected never matters as much as being able to get the job done. More poison darts next time. The die is telling me we should send Ashedel or Babrakus to warn the Red Mesas and Ridder, but I think only one person should go as whoever stays should be helping at the vault or in the Timore. Everyone currently at the Vault should be Working on getting our odds back in shape, getting something useful made out of the ore, and some sort of countermeasure to the Czar's sprite transmutation. Did team A actually accomplish anything at the Village, or did they just eat? If so we need to decide if it's worth keeping them out there when there easily could be an army of sprites coming through. The surroundings of the Tower should be fortified and booby-trapped in whatever way will ensure the survival of our forces there considering we're not going to have time to construct siege weapons and Czar might incinerate its contents if he's not bluffing.

Pendle, there is a few things you need to do. You may not be the most charismatic person, but you are what we have right noe. So firsts things first.
1. First and foremost, the blue anti-magic ore/crystals were closer to a metal, as you said. This means that they can an be smelted together, if they are broken apart. You should consult with the smith, and see if he can imbue the some weapons and armor with shards of that stuff. Because skill don't mean shit when put up against rediculous amounts of death magic. (This is only if we have determined that the blue shit will work in this manner, whether refined or otherwise. Might work better unrefined and more potent, much to the odds displeasure). Their anti-magic properties could keep you all alive, and in sword (or arrow!) Form, they could actually hurt that fucking god mode pretender.
2. Remember that the fucker can teleport. We don't know if he is good enough to accurate teleport directly inside, so minimally barricading the front door could be good. If he can only teleport nearby (to avoid Teleporting into a wall or something), having a barricaded door will do little more then give you all a heads up when he gets there, Pendle, there is a few things you need to do. You may not be the most charismatic person, but you are what we have right noe. So firsts things first.

If he can only teleport nearby (to avoid Teleporting into a wall or something), having a barricaded door will do little more then give you all a heads up when he gets there, exploding magic and shit. But if reinforcements come, letting them in is always nice.
3. You are a tactician. You are always prepared. This means you keep yourself informed and up to date on all relevant information. This includes the inventory of the vault. The concept my be a bit dated, but we need at least a general idea of what we are working with.
4. Talk to Ona, she is a witch doctor who specializes in healing. This includes removing curses and hexes, which are magical in nature. I suspect she may have SOME sort of anti-magical wards or totems that she could use/make. If not, tell her that her cooking is delicious. No need to make her feel bad that her skills aren't relevant in this fight, she'll be utilized after the bloodshed.
5. The blue anti-magic shit was first believed to be crystals, which means they have properties similar to crystals. This next part might be weird, but tell our little kobald alchemist to break out the mortar and pestle. Get a small amount of that stuff, and grind it into a fine powder. Mix into some vials with water/oil. This might make an anti-magic potion. If we find out it doesnt, then we have acquired some throwing potions full of magic sapping energy.
6. Have our little imp scouts returned? If so, send them to the bug people and request help from the king and queen there. They kinda owe us big for that thing we did. Send the other to the place we think muschio is. We saw where we thought he was, and we passed it on through the shards. That weird forest place. Yeah, that one. Send him there. Scouts are most useful scouting, but trying to do recon on the czar or pretender will land us one less minion.
7.this one is out there, but maybe tip the palidans off about the evil czar and his evil city full of evil sprites. Might get them out of your base, and if they attack the czar, then sweet. NOTE: send one of the human Guards. They won't be killed on sight. If they refuse, threaten to have Ona give them E.D. FOREVER. Try not to offend, but do press that this may actually save their lives.

You can do this. We have faith in you. You are currently the most important piece of this puzzle. Try not to fuck it up ;)

Let's not threaten our allies with bewitchment, it could seriously just make them kill everyone in the Vault. The ore could certainly be weaponized against our magic reliant foes, but we need to see if its something we have the resources to utilize. Maybe we could have a few of those handy for crossbow bolt heads to kill the Assassin or the Czar himself. We really should trust the messaging mission to someone in our own group though. It would be Finesse if she wasn't in the woods right now. Who should it be? Who's fast and can avoid being ambushed? Also, I'd opt for warning Ridder first, he's closer by and more likely to conjure up some anchorite elven witchcraft we can use.

This one´s voice doesn´t know what plan do you have, But I have an Idea of how to get the most of our "advanced communications".
1- Let´s go back to Finnese, and make shure she talk about the threath of invacion from or new foe, She must talk loudly, in order to be heard to the ones whose loyalty is incling on our favor...
2- By seeing the map, I can see only two ways for a military non-magical-or-tranported-by-air force can reach us: By sea and by land. If they try to go for land, They are forced to pass near the Salamander tower, wich means that either the commander, Dompag or his big sister will be able to see them and inform us about whow this force is composed. If they try by sea, well, it might be the fastest way, maybe, if we don`t count the preparations needed for the ships, aside of the ones that the manpower needs, and that they will require some time for preparations for the landing (If we had a larger force, I would suggest attacking them while they are in middle of their landing)
3- As our forces seem minimal, and we don`t know how many are them, it may be convenient, if not crucial, to gather the forces of our alies.
4- As you already know, our leader is lost, it may be important to see if we can find him and bring him, or at least, pìnpoint his location. as other one´s voice already stated, He seems to be at the north...(For this one`s voice, this is not a great priority since he doesn´t seem to be in great danger, or not aparently.)
5- There are many locations where you could send our beloved Agents, we could use them as fast messengers to our alies, as they have no use in combat, or maybe to scout the shore and see if any ships come, but This may prove to be dangerous, as there is an especialist aiding our foe. Also we could use one of the spies to try to track down Muschio, but, This one must warn that we only have 2 agents left, unless you think of something else...

Aside of that, the other voices may have some very interesting plans and courses of actions.

Muschio can handle himself, he, and presumably the sprite we've simultaneously kidnapped and been kidnapped by, will be on the run with the charm, assuming he knows anything about orienteering he should be running in the general direction of sepia town assuming he's in the woods here and not on another hemisphere. We need group B to get the Odds back in action and make something with the peregast that can neutralize sprite magic. The A Team is apparently having lunch at this point so maybe we should send them toward the elf manor and the Mesas to establish communication with them. This may or may not leave a serial killer wandering around Timore, but it's not like that will come back to haunt us. In the meantime group C should be safe from naval attacks considering they're upstream of that river and the Czar sent sprites by land. We can't afford to oppose a naval landing because this isn't Operation Neptune and we don't have machine-guns placed every half mile on the coast and the Czar doesn't have diesel powered landing craft. After all that shit happens and all our plans fail we should get ready to mow down the Czar with crossbows after aerosolizing a peregast powder inside the city. After that I guess we kill Ridder's mom for some reason that might be retroactively justified and take over what's left of Tela Cruz for the VILLAINY POINTS. Or we pussy out and become a goody two shoes even though we were supposed to be literally Satan by the end of this, and one more accidentally razed city is inevitable at this point. In all seriousness we should definitely check far the tower can actually see, they might be the best overwatch for that general area and can warn our guard unit of enemy movements.

Dude, wat? .........oh yeah I need to suggest something. Um...well...based on what we know we need to defend against magic users. As far as we know, the entire population, including the army, of Tela Cruz is Sprites. And as we've seen, they are very powerful magic users, but are not very bright at all. Almost childish really. The only people we have to worry about are the Assassin and the Czar, and we can assume only the Assassin is coming. We know he uses Anti-Magic. We need all the intelligence on Magical Defense and Anti-Magic in general we can gather. ASAP!!! Also I know this isn't the time for it, since we aren't talking to Muschio (How the fuck do you pronounce that name?) but I actually suggest we take the Sprite along. They might be rather childish, but holy shit do they have POWER. They fucking shielded us from Anti-Magic like it was NOTHING. I WANT...no NEED to see them at their FULL power.

Something else to consider, but Muschio must have been extremely lucky in picking out his sprite to help fight the anti-magic man. Well their are two real viable options. We can fight or we can flee. our allied forces are out of contact and those we do have contact with are drastically outmatched. based on the size of the city and the Czar's declaratios he will be comiting the majority of his forces to crushing us. fighin seems folish as with less then 40 defenders only about 6 of whom we can effectively order and will cooperate with our tactical advice we can't effectively fortify our hold. the deterrent effect the stationed troops have over the paladins is mostly political and the czar seems so insane he dosen't care. So a retreat is in order.
The most prudent course of action for the team in the tower is ti sit tight or try to evacuate to Rowan or the mesas, same for the team in the hold. Muschio will have an easier time going south to our allies in the desert. That will forc the enemy to split to try to get both groups. Whatever value the trinket holds is worthless to us if we cant defend it. hopefully the force that goes after Muschio will tick off those paledens in the southern kingdom and the force lead toward Rowan would provoke a response from the conspicuously absent elves.
The group in the hold should grab stulf prioritizing low weight high value goods such as the magic crystals and portal stone if it can be removed without disrupting out currently summoned minions. after that they should collapse the entrance and flee. also don't forget the hand.

670803

After so much inward contemplation, it's best to do a quick reassessment of my situation, and everything that's brought me here. So let us recap:

My name is Muschio Malto. Lost heir to the throne of North Piacevole, living in exile, presumed dead, since the usurpation and execution of my parents, the King and Queen.
I have been amassing power, riches, and comrades in my quest to retake my rightful place as ruler, and spread my dominion.

To this end I have recruited misfits like myself, defeated challengers, slain monsters, and collected ancient magics. Things were going well, despite the occasional social unrest within my mountainhome base, the Vault.

However, after my allies at the Salamander Tower were attacked by an unknown force, my following investigation led me to Tela Cruz, a bay city ruled by its mysterious Czar, Anolei Bomba. He has transformed his citizens into Sprites and flooded the city with those magical creatures, including the one I just escaped with. The Czar is powerful, and has me at a disadvantage, as I can't see his plan as yet.
Though I fled, I have gained some insight from this mission.

One: the Czar has in his employ a formidable hired assassin known as The Pretender. I battled him once before, in the land of the Red Mesas, which is ruled by my new allies, the bug-folk Matriarch and Patriarch. The battle ended when I set upon him to defend my second in command, the goblin tinker Finesse, and while I drove off the assassin, the battle cost me my hand.
Two: The Czar has some connection to the strange amulet I found when clearing out the dungeon which would become my base. The Pretender attempted and failed to retrieve the amulet earlier, but seriously injured one of my officers. The same icon appeared in the Czar's throne room, and his words led me to believe he needs the trinket to complete his plan, though why, and how, I cannot yet say.

However, in my desperation to escape the Czar and his hired man, I have stranded myself (along with this seemingly helpful Sprite) in a strange and prickly forest.
No doubt the Czar is currently making good on his promise to mobilize his forces and sack the Vault, in an effort to retrieve the strange amulet. My friends are in danger, and I am far from home.

I cannot let the Czar's power-mad schemes overpower my own power-mad dreams. I must act!

This may be a radical choice, but if we were to, say, evacuate the stronghold, regroup, and attack the Czar as a group, might we be able to overtake him? Okey-doke, Boss. First, we should ask the sprite if she has any navigatory spells. Point homeward, find playmate, whatever. Unlikely, given chaotic nature, but worth a shot.

Generally, titles are given to a person by other people. A Princess is generally the daughter of a king, queen, emperor or empress, or the female head of a Principality, or possibly the wife of a male version of any of the above. Etymologically, the titles "prince" and "princess" come from "princeps", which refers to a person who is chief, primary, the first, foremost, et cetera et cetera.

So, you can't just declare yourself a princess. But, with a little stretching, it would be easy enough to get the title on a technicality. For example, she could declare that she is leading a revolution among the sprites, and setting up a nation-in-exile for the freedom of spritekind. As first citizen of that nation, she could then easily call herself princess.

You know Muschio, if you still count yourself a Prince, and don't count the territory you rule as subordinate to any other ruler, then you're technically ruling a principality too, aren't you?

The difference would be that Muschio was born as an heir to the former throne that was deposed, where technically the kingdom doesn't exist, had things gone as intended he WOULD be the prince hence "rightful" whereas our new friend here, for all we know, was likely never royalty or heir to any throne (unless there's a wacky plot twist coming up in the future somewhere) and thus could not make that claim.
Effectively, she's right in that neither are truly recognized as the true rulers, but Muschio's claims are backed up by context and history.

Reasoning with her on the subject seems pointless as telling her that may upset her while we need her, so you might as well play along with it. How easily can one of those hills or mountains be scaled? If it doesn't take too much relative time and effort, you could use one of them to gain a better view of your surroundings and hopefully spot a landmark you can use for orientation or direction.

It's sorta like a "THIS, HERE". Right? Everyone knows that. But a blink isn't a teleport. It can't be targeted because of what it is. A blink is just a "NOT", okay? Like all it does is say "not this, not here". Like, anything else than what it is. So a teleport, you're like writing a sentence in a book. You're saying who and where. But a blink is like ERASING a sentence. Like just now, the book said "us, in Tela Cruz". And then I erased it. Now it's not.

I suppose her explanation will do for now.

The hike up the mountain's face won't be too difficult -- after about a half hour I estimate we'll reach the road by shortcut, whereupon travel will become doubly expeditious. We'll arrive at the mouth of the cave within the hour.

I take this time to reflect on what I know of these mountainhomes.

It was said that some short decades ago they were inhabited by Dwarves, but a great upheaval pushed them south. Last I heard, it was the domain of Orcs, who had settled into the carved spaces as though they had been born to. I do recall around the time of my exile there was a campaign by the Elves of the Shimmerwood to push the Orcs out, but whether that came to be, or what success it met, I suppose I never learned.

If the mountainhomes are settled by Elves, I should have a fairly easy time of it. Elves are arrogant and self-serving, but agreeable enough to the other races of Men.
If it is still occupied by Orcs, I imagine I should still handle myself serviceably. The last few months have proved quite adequately that I can handle the so-called "monstrous" races with aplomb.

I should be able to secure passage out in the morning, in either case.

I admit the only thing that worries me is the smoke.

Dragons. Surely not?
Dragons are powerful and reclusive creatures, but the mountainhomes have in ages past been plagued by dragon attack. Rumor stood that one of the great caves on this range was once the roost of one of the greatest dragons that ever lived.

I have never met a dragon, nor met any men who have. My understanding is that they range in intellect as well as temperament. But intruding uninvited to a dragon's domain would be a foolish move to even the most peaceable sorts.

The odds of a dragon roosting here, now, are -- well, such a thought is nearly preposterous. Yet still, I should anticipate that possibility, as far less likely things have come to pass in the few short years since I left my home.
Whatever calls this place its home now, I hope to be prepared.

Correction: I meant no magical lighting or even more proper light fixtures other than the occasional basket torch.

Also, is that regular wood that is being burnt, or can you detect some incense?

Wait, all that smoke comes from braziers and other ritual lights?

Careful, make sure it isn't too smoky before you proceed. You don't have gas mask technology so you'll have to make due with some sturdy bandanas.

The scale of this room is overwhelming. The "tiny" doors that run the sides of the hall are more than large enough for myself.

I peer through the nearest passage, which appears lit.

Just a simultaneously fortunate and unfortunate volto man and sprite woman looking to find their bearings after a little magical mishap. Random teleportation, you know the sort of thing, I'm sure. We saw the smoke coming from the mountain and thought, that looks like an important place with a good view that might give us a clue where we are.

So, um... you couldn't tell us where we are, could you, sir and/or madam?

"It's a funny story, really. You see, my companion and I were in Tela Cruz and ended up here quite by mistake when--"

>"Save your story. You'll need your breath."
The figure drags me through the adjacent hall, towards the lit chamber beyond.
Npoa follows.

The robed figure shouts to the lighted room beyond.

A sex cult would be good, a cult of cannibals would not however. Be ready for a fight if necessary, Npoa get ready for some more magical games!

*sigh*
Ask the robed guy what sort of party this is. Also ask him why he is in robes. And why he acted so curtly towards you.

This still doesn't sit well with me, we're never this lucky. Perhaps they are actually cannibals? Just of a more aristocratic sort. Be on your guard.

Well this is a nice weird way to start 2016.

Now, are these "Incompetent" nobles or "Decadent" nobles? Blink out if they're the latter.
