A new quest begins. Please pick race and gender.

Races available:

Conasi (Canines): Come from the grasslands to the west. Are renowned hunters, due to their speed and strength, but hate and fear magic. Nor are they very good with it.

Enos (Lizards): Hail from the deserts to the east. Are known for their strength and magical ability, but lack any speed to speak of.

Anhata (Birds): Live self-sufficiently in the mountains, rarely interacting with other races. They’re renowned for their magical ability, but are no match for the Rohic. However, they make up for this with their relative agility. They possess little in the way of strength.

Rakit (Rats): They live anywhere other races do, picking off of their scraps, and stealing when they can. They’re extremely agile, but possess almost no physical strength or magical ability.

Waturo (Bears): Living in the forests of the south, they possess massive physical strength, but have a weakness to magic, and are rather slow.

Rohic (Foxes): Also hailing from the forests in the south, they’re masters of magic, but do not possess much physical strength, and are more clumsy than their non-uplifted counterparts.

“Oooh, this is one of those soul-jar thingies! It gives it's wearer all kinds of useful advice and stuff! And it's shiny! Finders keepers, Ellie! Might be broken though. It's saying a lot of stuff, and it's not making much sense. Ah, well, a shiny's a shiny!”

“How many times do I have to tell you, it's Ellire. And I wouldn't want a stupid thing like that anyway. Relying on anything but your own judgment's bound to cause you nothing but trouble.”

“Okie. Wanna try the next room over? That crystal sphere thing could be in there...”

>>419397
>Who's your Rakit friend?
She's my roommate, Ellie! They usually don't let Rakits into the university, but she had "astounding academic achievement". She's the first Rakit I ever knew. She's all cute and fuzzy!

>What sort of spells do you know?
I know a fire spell that makes things I touch burn, a spell that lets me mold rock like clay, a levitation spell that floats me a few feet of the ground for a few minutes, and a telekinesis spell that lets me lift light stuff. Oh, and a transportation spell, but if I go more than five or ten feet it doesn't work right sometimes.
>Where are we now?
We're in the "ruins of Acknarzand". Some ancient race lived here a long time ago!
>Do you know why the headmaster sent you? Who's the headmaster and what are they like?
Nopety nope nope. The Headmaster only said it was of vital importance that me and the foreigner go get some "Sphere of infinite sight" from these ruins.

I can teleport instantly! But I get real confused after I cast it, so I can't cast anything for about five or ten seconds after I cast it.

>>419419
>Do you know what spells Ellire's knows? Could be handy if you guys ever need to make a plan.
No, but I know somebody who does know!

"Ellie! The Shiny wants to know what spells you know!"
"For the last time, my name's- Ugh, forget it. If your trinket wants to know so badly, I know a light spell, a blinding flash spell, spell that makes a illusion doppelganger for either myself or someone I'm touching for a few seconds, a basic first aid spell that makes me feel weak for the rest of the day, and a completely useless invisibility spell that only makes my body disappear. Terrible, I know."

>How much of the ruins have you explored so far? what exits are there in the current room?
We've gone through two rooms. They were both empty! How weird is that!?

These places are mostly real tiny, so they don't take long! It's the traps n' monsters 'n stuff you've got to worry about!

does the doppelganger have weight? and can it interact with things like strings?

The invisibility spell isn't entirely useless. You can look around corners if you are not wearing a hat or hood.

Does your stone-clay spell let you climb walls or ceilings?
>>
No. 419657 ID: b85f8c

>>419642
Illusions tend not to have any physical presence. I can see it being combined with teleport though, for a very convincing body replacement effect.

>>419639
That invisibility spell doesn't seem completely useless- you just have to strip naked to use it fully. It'd work well if you absolutely must sneak into somewhere undetected. Also if you cast it and only wore pants you could look around corners and out of cover and all that jazz. Body-only invisibility is limiting in scope but not useless!

Alright anyway, we've got a decent handle on what you two can do, so... regain your focus and keep an eye out for traps as you enter the next room.

>>

then the staff is probably pre-activated and touching it turns you into a thing. can a doppel touch things? if so make one and have it move the staff, while you are around the corner. and what's that in the pedestal with the staff? just under it. and the big chest needs checking too.
>>
No. 419869 ID: afdc48

The staff seems dangerous, let's check the big chest first. Don't suppose it's unlocked, huh? If not, can either of you pick locks?
>>
No. 419872 ID: 9718f3

Touch the orb to the staff. Best case scenario, it turns it into the sphere of infinite sight, worst case scenario, everything explodes or something. But seriously, it should at least cause the staff's effects to happen on the orb instead of you if they are harmful. Unless there's specific targeting parameters built into the staff, but you can only take as many precautions as you have resources for, and two novice magic-users don't have much to work with.

If the staff doesn't do anything to the orb, mold some stone around it so you can carry it without touching it directly and take it.

Ellie packs the lock to the big box and we go through it. It's mostly only robes and stuff, but a we find some stuff.

We found a dagger with a shiny in the handle, another shiny like you, and some scrolls we could learn spells from! Oh, and some potions.

Ellie says the black potion explodes when you throw it, the red one heals you no matter how bad you're hurt, the purple potion eats anything but flesh, and the blue potion makes magic work better. Ellie's the best at alchemy!

>Lockpicking
Only Ellie can pick locks! I asked her where she learned to do that but she wouldn't say.

Stow the scrolls until you know what spells they are to sort out who would be best for learning each.

Now lets check out the pedestal the staff is in. Thing might be handy but the thing it's in screams of traps to me. Find anything odd on it besides the stick?

This seems like a good use for them!
Also, do NOT use up the purple potion, no matter what kind of shiny things Ellie may be wearing under the robes.

You never know if you might have to fight a golem or other animated construct, and the purple potion could be a very quick deciding factor in that kind of fight.

The staff seems like an obvious trap. Try throwing a robe over it and see what happens.

We can make it harder to ambush us by going off to through the woods along the river and doing whatever somewhere that isn't the bridge's normal location.

Is it evening or is that red light in the sky not natural?

WARNING! DANGER! Be very careful, it's probably an ambush of some sort - get off the road and be quick about it!

Why this sudden concern over an ambush?

Someone has already sent a sellsword after us, and what was a perfectly serviceable bridge not long ago is now mysteriously gone with its ropes appearing to have been cut.

If it's not an ambush, we'll end up looking silly with no other ill effects. If it is an ambush and we ignore it, we're in serious trouble.

Alright, you make a good point. A bit of excessive paranoia is better than insufficient caution in this situation.

The good old paranoid's wager.

Get off the road. If there is someone in your way, fight for your life, because you can be sure someone else is on the other side behind you.

Just bumping this thread to the top to buy time.

I don't think there are any rules against this, and I don't want to give up on this quest just yet.

We start off the pa-

Ohno.

Masked Rohic: "Why, hello hello hello. How much did they offer you to betray me, peasant? No matter. I get it. No honor and all that. Just give me the staff and pretend you've never seen it, and I won't kill every last one of you."

AAAAAHHHH! All I wanted was to get the stupid ball and take a stupid bath!

hold up the staff, jerks like this are one of the few acceptable targets. "oh? you mean this staff? i wonder what would happen if i used it right now"

This guys sounds like the sort to rant revealingly if given half a chance, and will likely be a long-term problem one way or another. We should see what information we can get out of him before the fight starts. Tell him how it is funny how he talks about honor in the same breath as literally attempting highway robbery.

Would your mold-rocks-like-wet-clay spell also work on actual clay (assuming I am right in thinking that is a clay golem)?

We may have to use the blue potion here. Either on you or your friend, depending on if we want to fight, or turn invisible and run away.

"This staff...it's magic must be very great, or you wouldn't want it so badly."

...I think so.

Phira:"You're really funny, talking about honor and robbing us. You have n-no honor! And if you want this so bad it must be really powerful! I wonder wh-what would happen if I used it on you right now! I'll... I'll do it!"

Masked Rohic: "Ha! Cute. Your turncoat friend over there broke her contract, and that's the only law that really matters. And no you won't. That staff could make me explode for all you know. You're not a killer. I can hear it in your voice."

Tai: "I am, and I would! Just say the word Boss, and I'll tear that arrogant prick and his toy to shreds!"

Masked Rohic: "And what do you think you're going to do, you filthy Enos oathbreaker. Give me a black eye? Just give me the staff and make this easier on yourselves."

Melt the golem and let her loose on him.
>>

If you have the fine control, meld the golem's joints. If she knows it's out of action, she may try something desperate, but if she has a false sense of security you can get the drop on her.

If you feel up to it, point the staff at her and say that actually you know perfectly well that it is a transfiguration staff*, and as such is highly unlikely to be lethal. If you are till uncomfortable with pointing the staff at her, say that you will just cast it at her expensive-looking golem instead.

Depending on how the stone-molding spell works, we might have to touch the golem to use it, so that plan is still viable but should be kept as plan B.

And Phira, for future reference you shouldn't explain an insult for the same reason you shouldn't explain a joke.

*Red glow, remember?

You're not a killer, so use the staff on the golem instead.

Tai needs a weapon. We gave that shiny dagger to Ellie, but does she have an extra now?

"the staff came with a name and that is hint enough about what it does, it will not kill you, but i doubt you would like the result"

Oh, that's right, it's a transfiguration magic staff. It must be a harmful magic though in order for this guy to not want us to use it on him.

So do it! Let's find out what it does!

She broke her oath to stop from breaking another more important oath! She had no choice! You're just getting us riled up while your partner sneaks up from behind, aren't you!
