Katie wakes in the middle of the night, once again bothered by strange, inexplicable sounds for the hallway. There's a scratching noise running up and down the hall, as if someone is dragging their fingernails against the wall.

Usually Katie would just ignore it, but it's been three days ad she's barely slept a wink. Her imagination had decided to provide any number of horrible things it could be. Maybe it's and axe murderer waiting to chop her to bits, or the ghost of the previous tenant. After all, Katie has only live in this apartment for a week. Who knows what dark past it has?

Her concern isn't about the past, though. It's about the present noises. Despite letting her imagination wander, she's pretty sure it's just rats in the walls or something like that. The question now being, how can she fix it so she can get to sleep?

Katie considers just putting in earplugs and going back to sleep, a plan which she is completely ready to go through with before she remembers that she doesn't actually own any earplugs.

The only other thing she can think to do is look down the hall. Of course, since it's the middle of the night, she can barely see a few feet down there. Really, her apartment doesn't need a hallway. The door in the side leads to the bathroom, the only other room in the house. The kitchen is out the front door (the one obscured by the strangely thick shadows), in the communal areas.

Not that she can think of food with the possible rat infestation. Those sounds are-

... Suddenly not actually going anymore. Weird.

Strange how? Describe what's so peculiar about them.

Well, the noise is gone, so now you can go back to sleep.
If the noise starts again, or you can't go to bed because of some other reason (door locked/gone, crazy axe murderer in the way, meeting a doppelgänger etc.) see if you can find a light somewhere, you're only gonna hurt yourself stumbling in the dark.

Is that... someone at the end of the hallway?

No, of course not. It's just the outline of the front door.

>Describe what's so peculiar about them.

Well, the fact that they're almost completely obscuring the front door is the most notacable thing. That, and they aren't evenly distributed. They're focused on the end of the hallway, and look to be swirling almost like liquid.

Katie laughs nervously at herself and her imagination, deciding to try to find the light switch. It seems like the damn thing moves around all the time.

It takes a few moments of blind scrabbling (she isn't taking her eyes off the hall) to find the switch. When she does, she finds that it isn't working. Damn faulty wiring. She should complain to someone in the morning to try to get it fixed.

Katie glances back into her room, looking on her shelf. Usually her flashlight sits there, but it's gone. She must have left it in the bathroom. To get to it, she will have to go into the hallway.

Katie's first thought is to go grab her flashlight. Of course, that's all the way in the bathroom, so she may as well finish up everything she needs to do in her bedroom first, then go get it.

The only thing she can think of is to glance at herself in the mirror by her bed. God, she looks like a mess...

See-through?! That's... a little more than just weird, but 'weird' is all Katie's shell-shocked mind can come up with. Then again, that really isn't the main thing on her mind, anyway.

She jumps, swinging around to face whoever it is. The hulking mass of darkness edges closer, a thin, hissing noise escaping it. Slowly, the noise forms into words.

"Why... don't you... stay... dead...?" it asks.

That is just an incomprehensibly terrible thing to say, but what is important is: Do you have lungs? Of course you do! You can feel them. What's this inside them? It's that time that a kid pushed you over in a playground, and when someone stole your bracelet, and all those nasty rumours you heard, people can be so cruel. You were cut-off, degraded, mocked, harassed so many times, and those people who were wrong on the internet... Everything that ever made you angry, it is all down there, wailing desperately to escape. Just open your mouth...
and SCREAM!

"Shut... up...!" it hisses. "Do you... want... them... to try to... get... rid of us...?

With a slight glare at the thing, Katie dons her dressing gown and takes her time going to the hallway (partly to spite the thing and partly because she's dreading seeing what's there).

She freezes at the sight of her body, lying cold in the middle of the hallway. "H-holy shit..." With a sob, she falls to her knees. "I'm actually dead..."

The thing doesn't seem to know what to do. It twitches, looking around awkwardly. "Oh. Oh no. Please... don't cry..."

It's only a little dead, barely even bleeding... Get back in there and try to move stuff! Even if you can't be alive again, possessing your own corpse is better than nothing!

Wait... You were in the corridor, Everything went dark, as though the darkness was attacking you, and now you are dead? And there is a dark thing that says it is haunting the place? Did it kill you? Don't let it get off by claiming that it just blinded you and you fell over on your own! That wouldn't fly in court and it certainly won't fly to a vengeful haunt!

If you're really a ghost, then you must be able to make the lights flicker. Try that. Then do the same thing to your body. Once you can flicker your body on and off, then focus on turning yourelf on all the time.

Or try poltergeist telekinesis? Zombiedom isn't great, but I hear that makeup and perfume can work wonders!

As for the ghost... It is black, like ash. Ash builds up in ovens and is shovelled away. It's weak to shovels! Hit the black ghost with a shovel and steal its black robe. That thing looks comfy!

The other ghost huffs, looking away. "You were in my house..." they mumble.

What?
Their house? Their house! Did they pay for it? Well so did you! Did they live here? Well so did you! Do they keep their stuff in it? Is it where people know to find them? Maintenance? Rates? gardening? Have they ever done anything at all to keep it from being levelled to build apartments?
You have at least an equal claim to this place, what sort of maniac thinks murder is a valid response to sharing a house with someone who is paying rent for the both of you!
If they want to be alone so badly, then they can invert whatever ghost voodoo they used to kill you and you'll be happy to be done with the place. You could even turn it into a parking lot so people only visit twice a day. Or they can go hide in the attic because you aren't going anywhere because the biggest idiot in history decided to get rid of someone by killing them, even though they were conclusive evidence that it wouldn't work!
...
Try Everything on your body. Draw upon anger, draw upon love, meditate, push life into it, pull memories through it, imagine it getting up with a hangover and staggering into the bathroom for painkillers... Think through every ghost story you've ever heard for anything that might work...

"Your house?!" Katie snaps. "Like hell it's your house!" She rants and raves for a while about paying rent, keeping up maintenance, and how stupid it is to murder someone over something that isn't even actually trespassing!

The shadow fades a little. "I might have... overreacted," they mumbled. "It's been hard to... focus... and control... my temper... since... I died."

Katie ignores it, lying back down with her body and focusing on how angry her death makes her.

Badass! But yeah, you're undead.

You get to keep your body though, that's a plus. Important question: can you still feel heat? Because the first thing you're going to want to do is stuff yourself in a fridge box before your body rots. Or some other thing to slowly replace your body parts with cybernetic / golem augmentations so you can survive.

Second thing is to prevent yourself from killing the paramedics with frenzy, but focus on reconnecting your spiritual links to your body for now.

First things first, Katie tries to call the hospital. Of course (as usual for her crappy apartment) there's no reception. With a frustrated growl, she hangs up and decides to deal with this shit herself. There's a first aid kit in the bathroom, so she can at least wrap up the wound.

As she does, she considers her situation. She can hardly feel anything, but it's hard to tell if that's from shock or because f the whole 'ghost posessing her own body' thing. If only robot bodies or magic were real, she could just use those to replace her body if it starts to rot. Though, considering ghosts turned out to be real, who knows if magic and robots are secretly real or not?

Speaking of things that are suddenly real, Katie tries and fails not to think about how she might be some sort of zombie now. Will she attack the first person she sees? That would be rich, going off at that ghost for attacking her then immediately attacking someone else.

Nope, no worries. You are hard-core enough to be alive through will alone. No frenzy will control you. At least not if you predict it, which you did.

Would your neighbours have a land-line? Ambulances do come highly recommended and concussions can get nasty down the line. And if you have no heartbeat then you can play dead and raid the morgue for preservatives...

The other ghost disappeared doesn't that mean we are back alive? Plus he did say he was trying to kill you (and failing), so that could mean that he couldn't kill you only injure and maim you, thus causing a near death out of body experience.
If we patch our self up and get a check up at the hospital things may go back to normal.

Katie takes a deep breath, trying not to worry. After all, she managed to pull herself back into her body from sheer force of will. She can resist any urge to hurt people, right?

With that out of the way, she bandages up her head and cleans off as much blood as she can.

Looking a little better.

She considers going to the hospital herself. Obviously driving is a bad idea, since she still feels off-balance, but the ghost did say she wasn't dead. That had to mean that a quick hospital visit to get the probable concussion sorted would have her feeling back to normal, right?

As normal as she can feel with a ghost stalking her. she glares at the shape in the mirror. "Can you just-"

Katie freezes, putting both hands over her mouth. That voice wasn't hers. Well, it was, but it was also around five or six other voices at once.

Even the ghost looks confused. "That shouldn't... be... happening."

Gonna say you should be trying to get to a hospital. If your phone doesn't work, you can ask someone else to call for help when you come across them.

Making sure you don't go all the way dead is priority one. Figuring out what to do about other ghosts is a distant second.

>Will she attack the first person she sees? That would be rich, going off at that ghost for attacking her then immediately attacking someone else.
If you raise concerns with first responders or medical personal that some kind of psychotic break or your head injury might might you try to hurt someone, they'll at least be on guard for it.
