If magic doesn't exist, how do your psychic powers work?

oh, so you destroy things you do not understand, instead of holding on to it for when you get better more in depth tools capable of detecting the mechanism.

you also lose the right to complain about impossibility when you lived through a stopped heart. a cessation of chemical processes, even temporarily, results in an organisms death unless some other force was acting on it.
aka, calm your tits, jeez, it's just a glowing rock.
besides, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. anything that is magic can be technology that you just don't understand. could be the crystal was designed in a way that when exposed to certain kinds of radiation it emits lights, which would be a reaction on the SUB-atomic scale. which your atomic senses would be incapable of detecting.

"That is silly, Richard. Why do you think magic powers these crystals?" you ask of Richard.

"Forgive me my Lord for conforming to such pagan beliefs. I shall proceed beat myself to cleanse this vessel of heresy and compensate for what I've done."

"No, it's my fault," you try to calmly explain, "for mistaking magic for miracles. I know getting angry over these miniscule trifles isn't helping our situation. I should be the one who's sorry. Who am I to judge when I have undergone an unexplainable transformation, mind and body?"

The remaining tiny shards of the crystal sit in the palm of your hand with a menacing spell on you. It almost seems to whisper, "Give in to me."

>Snort it like crack.

You toss most of the shattered crystal but save just a tiny sample to test. The stuff acts as a placebo causing your brain to erupt into hot, intense waves of pleasure from memories of previous experience. Orgasmic release explodes deep inside as you shiver in ecstasy. It's so good, so bountiful. You feel energized and ready to take on the world. Can't drop the habit. So dye your hair, put on a smile, act normal and maybe they won't notice, they won't figure out what's really happening.

"My Lord, did you happen to grab the transceiver when we left?" Richard's words barely register to you.

Gums tingling and tongue loosened you spew out,"Noooooooooo, is okay though. No problemo, nope! Maybe they'll live I dunno. Why care? I feel gooooooooood so everything's fine. See a doctor; I hear they help."

If I must. Addiction isn't necessarily my ally after all.

>If that's a placebo, you should be able to shake off the effects as they're all in your head.

The placebo triggered a massive release of endorphins into his bloodstream and he refuses to halt the flow.

>dunk your head in the water. clean yourself off, and chug some.

It's freezing cold and goes down like liquid ice. Clean perhaps but hardly refreshing. Should improve Jack's situation.

>We really should go back for that.

I have an idea, "Richard, please be a dear and fetch me the radio. I'd be eternally grateful if you did this for me."

"I shall make haste and bring it to you with great speed."

>That river may be a way out, then. Tell Richard to communicate this through the mind link

My impression of Jack fools Richard. Richard tells me he will inform the robot defenders to come here once he finds the Commander. I don't like being seen even as someone else so that's going to be a problem.

>can you do a psychic scan? as in, feel around for sentient thoughts nearby.

Two nearby. I can hear them and their thoughts.

A small voice cries out, "But father, what about the amulet?"

"No, we can't go back. Run dearest run for your life! Back to the camp, quickly!" a deeper exasperated voice replies back.

They're being chased but by what I don't know. No other thoughts I can pick up so unintelligent life I'm guessing.

You've got three options here. One, you could refrain from intervening in this fight at all, but that's boring. Two, you could aid the vermin in taking down these bums, but you don't really gain anything that way since the vermin seem likely to win without your help, and they may also congenitally lack a sense of reciprocity. Three, you could save their sorry asses and use the resulting life-debt to more or less take them as your slaves. Moderate risk, big payoff.

"Son I have no idea for I have not seen anything like him. He is like the Hu in body yet without tail or abundant hair but rather scaled."

"A simple thank you would do." you say in irritation as your deed goes unappreciated.

"Sorry stranger, I am indebted to you for saving me and my son from these cave beasts. If it is not too much, might I ask your name and the nature of your visit?"

"Name's Jack and I'm leaving this dump. What are you dogs doing in this degenerate infested rat-hole for?"

"Mede Jaffa and my son Lee Jaffa good sir, we are looking for a object of great value; an enchanted amulet of the lost kingdom of Ariana."

"You must mean Armenia. It must be very valuable then to risk your life for, not to mention that of your son..."

>But first tell them you have to wait for your companion.

"Stay awhile won't you, I'm waiting for my companion anyway. Let's discuss The amulet; I want to know more about it."

Mede talks slowly at first but begins to grow frantic, "The amulet is forged from pure marble gold and inside rests a ruby red jewel as fierce as an inferno. This kingdom, the kingdom of Ariana, was a civilization of the some of the first dragons during the Age of Terror who created, wore, and used this magical amulet as a protective ward against the monsters coming from the Rift. It was said that those who wielded it were nearly gods themselves. In fact I heard rumors that a goddess bond herself to the amulet. Dubious I know but that's all I could gather from my research. As far as it's location is concerned it should be located right in the throne room which isn't far but unfortunately hundreds of those ugly abominations frequent that area. We must get it for the Rift will threaten us once more if we do not get the amulet to the rightful dragon heir."

"Yes, yes," you say mildly disinterested, "but will you and your son pledge your lives to me if I help you?"

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me. I will help you with your task. In exchange you will serve me as servants till you can repay the debt. I can work miracles for you. Think about it."

He gives a defeated look in his answer,"I--I-I....I accept. Son, come over-"

Richard hands you the fully loaded pistol as you start to lead with the dogs behind you into a dark passage. Mede guides you in the darkness surprisingly well giving you directions that seem to twist and turn at every step but never once do you hit a dead end.
Without warning the canines stop and immediately the father dog begins to sniff the air.

They do not and your mind races about the power of the amulet declining your focus. A pull of the trigger unleashes the massive roar of the gun as it explodes into the dark corridors blasting bright sparks from the chamber illuminating the halls for an instant. Your semi-blind aim hits the head of newly discovered degenerate species you dub as homo turpis. The dogs yelp in fright who are unaccustomed to the rattling noise and light but more importantly this terrifies the cave dwellers.

Homo turpis leaves you alone as you navigate the dark labyrinth. The twists and contortions of the pitch-black halls end in crystal light in a large room of reasonable length. A great crystal shines brightly overhead lighting the entire chamber.

With a cry of astonishment, Mede wildly glances around the room, "Oh my, I can't believe it! This is the great hall of the dragon kings of Ariana always speculated to have been lost forever! Shoot the clasp on the amulet at point-blank range, grab the amulet, and then karate-chop the arms until she stops moving! Grab her hair if you have to!

Wires, cables, pulleys, magnets... If those fail, then it may just be an extradimensional control. Either there's enough influence for it to be a worthwhile study, or it's very limited and locational.

Say that you are Jack Steel, and skeletons usually do not care much for keeping their possessions.

As for what he is, he looks to me most like a self-sustaining psionic effect anchored either to the bones or to those glowing crystals. ...Though with all the odd things piling up, we might consider the possibility that the laws of physics have been altered in some way while you were underground (perhaps by this "Red Genesis" event).

>Introduce yourself. Use telekinesis to move the child out of the way
>say the dogs are your servants so they act according to your will.
>skeletons usually do not care much for keeping their possessions

"My name is Jack and these are my servants,"

You manage to move the child to the side telekinetically and confront the skeleton. But the strain of all this mind work is starting to hemorrhage your brain.

"and I don't care who you are. All I want is that amulet you're wearing. Hand it over."

You are not of dragon-blood! Why would I give up the amulet to a foreigner? Leave my presence at once before I decide to imprison you.

>Someone who'll use it for its intended purpose and not as a Halloween decoration, you bony old hag. What is that you're wearing, a wig?

"Listen here granny, I may not know what little magic tricks you're pulling but I definitely am running low on patience. Now give me that amulet or I'm going to rattle your bones until the calcium inside them decays you bony hag."

You impudent wretch! I am the last dragon prince of Ariana and a powerful necromancer. In but an instant I could make your corpse dance for my amusement you foolish peasant. Now die worm.

The skeleton stands, grabbing his sword and wielding it with dexterity brandishing it towards your throat. You guide your pistol towards his head, near the gold chain, complete with a stinging remark.

"Oh, ho, ho, no I don't think so you sissy Halloween decoration. What's that on your head a wig, princess?"

A curse, so great and horrible, will come upon you for offending a dragon of royal blood unless you choose to die quickly by my blade.

"Sure honey, now give daddy a big, ol' kiss." with that said you tongue the bag of bones.

Disgusting abomination! You are not one of the gods' children, twisted creature!

I have a feeling you won't be getting that amulet.

We should've asked this earlier... what's the Rift, and why does the amulet need to be given to a rightful heir? What does the thing do anyway? Would it even be useful to you? If it's not useful there's no reason to take it instead of letting the dogs have it like you agreed.

Call for Richard to SLICE SMASH ROAR!

Shoot the amulet, aim for the string. Don't worry too much about the amulet, if this is an undead prince with jewelry then there should be a stash somewhere.

Who cares what child we are of? You are simply here denying what our progress requests. You put so much stock into bloodlines yet you have no blood of your own! Nothing left of any line except for bones, bones that could be of any creature.

Don't shoot it in the skull. If it's animate without internal organs, you've got no reason to believe a headshot would stop it. Instead, target the right shoulder joint, foundation of the arm it's using to hold that blade to your neck. Presumably it's somehow dependent on the structural integrity of those bones, or else it'd just be swinging the sword freely through the air.

When you can't see the puppeteer, start with the strings.

>what's the Rift, and why does the amulet need to be given to a rightful heir? What does the thing do anyway?

M'ariana, as we the mighty dragons call it, is a dark and evil place, an ebony pit where no light shines plunging into the nether. The holy fire of my ancestor, the Red Dragon, purged it once and he will come again but still the dark gods and their children reside in abodes made of magma and sulfur. So only this amulet has the power to seal them away assuming it is wielded by the blessed royal blood of my kin. Therefore anyone not of the dragon families who desires Blood-fire must intend it to release the dark ones, foolish traveler.

>well then, how come you didn't just go and find a new dragon to give it to? dogs claim they found a dragon.

The Luttal know nothing of our ways. Let my kin come to my domain to claim their inheritance as is custom.

>You are simply here denying what our progress requests. You put so much stock into bloodlines yet you have no blood of your own! Nothing left of any line except for bones, bones that could be of any creature.

Your rage manifests itself in slow, clear words, "I did not come here to listen to irrelevant bullshit! I want that amulet you dense, brainless, heartless, bony, piece of-"

He runs his blade through your chitinous armor and muscle slicing open your jugular. The blood waterfall doesn't faze you but the sword itself unleashed some witchery on your body. You are dying.

They think they can take your life so easily as you slip farther and farther away but in return they must give up their hopes and their dreams to complete this horrendous exchange. You will take them whether they surrender them up willingly or not. Your gun rings out lightning and thunder and a piece of metal flying at screeching speeds bent to destroy.

At the shattering of the gem come cries of desperation from the skeletal prince.

NOOOOOO! What have you done you fool?!!! Who will stop the dark ones now?! You've doomed us all!!!!

Barely satisfactory.
Voices come upon you, quiet whispers in the darkness. Offers of life, of power, of servitude in the name of sinister forces; pathetic attempts at bribery that disinterest you.
And for what? To run a short while longer?

Oh, look who's back.

"No more, please no more. I cannot bear this torture. You've taken everything from me so why do you keep me still?"

"You brought this on yourself. Look around Salvatore, do you see all these malevolent machinations? Do you hear them? Who would allow such things to permeate into our world? Blame them! Am I the center of evil that you cast your slightest accusations at me? No, of course not!"

"I did what you asked of me you twisted being. Release me so I may go to be with my loved ones."

"No sane person could, would, or should love either of us. Wait, are you seriously crying? Don't make me laugh. Sal news flash: Real men don't cry. Ever. You're not a child and you're definitely not a woman. You are a cold-blooded murderer."

"There is no fathoming what you are anymore. I don't want to imagine what Jack will become. Again."

>Can you form a chrysalis to recover?

Yes, Jack will sleep and dream for us a nightmare so that we might live. Shall we walk backwards then? Deep into the frozen depths of hell crafted from our own hands?

Yes, let's "walk backwards". Time for a flashback, to get some context on what your conflict is. What really happened before Jack escaped? They weren't actually stickmen were they?

well sal, you have a bad way of trying to make him better. you could help and teach, instead of just trying to make him a hate ball. when nillya was lost you demanded she be abandoned. someone that abandons people at the drop of a hat is not a healthy personality. so if jack is going to become something horrible, you didn't do anything that would have prevented it, or even mitigate it, in fact, you could have accelerated it.

What should be said about the familiar territory on which we tread, offering our admiration or disgust? In the far off distant twilight stands the twin child, growing ever larger, filled with all our substance of every variation. The eyes in the back of our heads watch intently as we greet or mock this known stranger as we propel ourselves deeper and deeper in opposite directions while watching the essential essence of the other sibling fly off as food into its gaping mouth. So why walk backwards? Does this movement create a equality between the two? It's not my place to judge.
