Feel like I've got some explaining to do about that last update, as well as this quest in general.

So... was that the (bad) end? I'm not sure if the explaining if for a sudden genre shift or "this is where is gets weird", or if it's for "sorry, you walked right into the game over, guys."

The problem is I'm not sure.

I started this thing back in January as some kind of zany political intrigue, which probably would have worked had I not lost all my planning in a harddrive crash about a month later. I've also been super busy for the past several months, which unfortunately pushed maintaining Digby Quest to the bottom of my priority list. As a result, I ended up making a bunch of careless blunders that kept pushing me further and further from my original idea as I was jumping back and forth between different aesthetics trying to find one that worked.

So in short the quest I wanted to write and the quest I ended up writing are two very different things, and my attempt to combine the two has left me at a standstill.

Should I go ahead and continue this quest anyway at the cost of future edginess, or should I just scrap it here and go write something with less forced eldritch horror?

Sometimes you're best off just taking this one update at time until the content of what people do and what choices are made suggests a direction.
It also doesn't have to be Lovecraftian/interdimensional horror if we're involving voodoo or traditional sorcery. Really, with demonic compacts and summoned demons the sky is the limit for particular granted powers. Having Christian rituals like exorcisms actually effective isn't something we do too much around here, might be worth trying.

I've noticed people have been asking for backstory a lot in the most recent (relatively speaking) updates, but the more action-y posts semm to get people interested as well.

Since we're at a crossroads here, would you guys like more exposition, more action, or more weird shit?

Well, honestly, my first reaction would be if your heart isn't in it, there's not a lot of point to forcing it to continue. You're not obligated.

At this point, I suppose the choice is really if you want to experiment with something more freeform / improvisational, or if you want to start over with something more planned out and structured from the start.

This anon hit the nail on the head, you're asking us questions that you should have answers for from your own preferences. I have some advice for going either way though:
Sometimes you can try to do both planning and improvisation at the same time by just choosing a couple sources to steal from. For instance, I was particularly pointing you at Christian myth regarding demonic compacts (sorcery) as a source to steal from above, if you wanted to continue this quest as-is.
