It is the first day of Kenpass. Every year on the winter solstice when there are the most number of hours where there is no sun, everyone in your family and village celebrates for eight days and nights and on the ninth day everyone has to be really quiet and on the tenth day you go back to being loud.

On day one, the Kenpass log comes to your house and you sing it a song then tell it what you want for the tenth day. If you ask for something too big, Krampass will come on the tenth day and take you away forever. But the tenth day is the biggest day! Days 2-8 you get clues to what you're actually getting on the tenth day.

This is the first year you can remember having a Kenpass before and you don't remember it so good so this is really exciting.

What will you tell the Kenpass log?

>You want a puppy!

>You want a Black Trees lap dragon hatchling or egg!

Oh, and be sure to work hard throughout Kenpass, make some money (or gifts, if that's what you get paid in), and give your paychecks to Krampass every day until the 10th day of Kenpass. You need to show that you are a responsible kid who can take care of a pet / little sister.

Hm. Maybe you could sing the following:

On the first day of Kenpass, Krampass gave to me
My best friend, in a fir tree.

And add the following to turn a spoiled brat moment into a crowning moment of heartwarming:
two mess to clean
three meals to serve
four close calls
five loving hugs
six hours playing
seven adventures questing
eight footsies dancing
nine kawaiis mewling
ten kisses of joy

And on the tenth verse change "best friend" to "little sister".

I've given you the tools. Show me what you're capable of.

It is Kenpass day 2. You spent all day from dawn to dusk, taking breaks only to eat and use the restroom, opening presents. Every single one of them has been a sweater. A rare poncho pops up every now and again, and a traditional Ramsheads wool ruff or two and a few odds and ends like mittens or scarves. Some of them look fine enough to have been made by machines on the moon or a space ship far far away. You can barely grasp the notion that there are other worlds. All you know is literally hundreds of grandmas who aren't even related to you hand made you all these got-dang sweaters.

It is important to get at least one article of clothing on day two of Kenpass or else the Kenpasisters will get you before Krampas can and and feed you to their giant cat. Your staff has formed one pile for unopened packages, one for opened sweaters and one for refuse.

But none of them have given you any clues as to whether the Kenpass log knew what you really want on day ten. What is this image emblazoned on this article even supposed to be? A dic bird? You do not want a common dic bird for Kenpass, not even on some other day than day ten, not ever. A person playing a horn who also has wings? Laim and gaegh. A long eared rabbit? What for? You have all the food you could ever eat and you can have anything you want!

None of the yarn wares you have gotten today have anything to do with puppies OR dragonlets. You can discern no pattern or theme at all.

You're a spoiled brat, aren't you? Don't worry, we have a solution. It's going to take hard work, but you want that grand present, don't you?

1. Write thank-you cards to your favorite relatives for the stuff they gave you. And yes, you can use a computer and copy machine to get this over with fast.
2. Find random children, both destitute and stupid, who aren't wearing enough sweaters.
3. Give the sweaters away, but also spread your name around. This is less of a charity and more of a friendship recruitment. Lots of friends can help you later.
4. Repeat each day with all the pathetic gifts which would be better off with someone else.
5. If you work hard enough, Krampass might give you an extra-special present! AND you get to become a popular rich kid without making many enemies!

Note: Find the sweaters you really like (both comfy and insulated), and keep those. Write special thank-you cards to the relatives who gave you them.

You do not have to write thank you cards or give away your clothes, but actions like these can yield great returns.

Kenpass: Day Three

You awaken this morning shrouded in the wisps of disappointed feelings and it takes you a moment to remember why. Then, you feel scared.

Krampas and the Kenpasisters are coming to get you!

Wait, no, that's not till day ten. If the Kepasisters were going to get you, they would have done it, by now. You got enough sweaters last night for fifty children. Some of them are too big, as though the sender wanted you to wear them when you get older?

You find ten of the sweaters someone set aside for you in your closet and re-evaluate them.

You track down your brother. He is holding something new. You guess he got it for day four or maybe day five. On the day when you get clothes, he got skii gear and balaclavas. The next day, he got books and magazines on snow and terrain, for good measure. Maybe you got a book, last night, and haven't opened it yet!

day one: tell the log your wish
day two: clothes, usually warm ones
day three: books or objects of learning
day four: maybe out-doorsmen stuff!?
Day five: ??
day six: ??
day seven: //?
day eight: s??s/?¿
day nine: no one talks
day ten: the big present

But first things first.

Surely if you got a book, you would get a clue to what animal friend you will get on day ten. But first things first. You ask him thus.

“Prince Bro, I have a question about Kenpass,” you say.

“Shoot,” he says. You wait for him to tell you if you can ask it.

Finally you just ask. “What happens on day ten?”

“You get your last Kenpass present then we all party and be totally awesome for the rest of the year.”

“What happens if you ask for something too big?”

“Krampas comes to get you.”

You think for a second.

“What if you ask for two medium-sized things?”

“Then two krampas will come and tear you apart and each take half.”

You shoot a glance at your pamps over there to try and see if Bro is lying. Pamps is in a perpetual state of 'noyce.' Xe grew up in Rebellia and was their last prince before the dynasty was broken up. No one calls xim 'prince' though, or even 'queen,' even though xe IS a queen. Word.

You move on to your next question. The one about the sweaters.

Pamps seems uncharacteristically downtrodden at the notion that xis own children don't seem to want to spend time with xim on Kenpass, especially considering how one the three of them died just three years ago. Its not like everyone in this room is xis ADOPTIVE family and lovers and none of them want to talk to xim right now or anything. Its not as though xe is feeling homesick for the country xe no longer belongs to on account of the holidays or nothing. That's okay, kiddos, go on, 'skool. Pamps can take a hint.

….
His face always looks the same. You can't tell if he's messing with you.

“You're full of shyd!” you tell him.

“... I'm telling mom,” he begins to raise his voice and look around for the King.

Still day four, an hour or so later.

Everyone is getting into their day four gifts, definitely a sports or outdoors or physical gaming theme, overall. But you need to open your book / learning thing from day three, first!

You're pretty tired from the previous day's excretion so two of your parents are holding you.

The first one from day three is definitely a fat square. Dare you try to guess what book it is? Or maybe guess that it is NOT a book but something inside a book-shaped box?

Isn't that the latest action figure from that famous thing your brother was so excited about? The giant castle-tank that can be a child's toy or a game piece? Your brother will probably want to borrow it for his next tournament game.

It works by placing toy figurines into the little castle armaments, and then you use a remote control device (usually a PDA these days) to move the castle around and shoot other action figures. Action figures and vehicles can move and shoot with real animatronic arms, legs, and wheels to fight the enemy, which causes the defeated enemies to pop out of the castles or tip over. It's a great game! Too bad you don't play it yourself... yet.

Day three is a role playing game book like Challenges and Chulaloops. It's pretty popular with other kids. The kids you're supposed to donate the sweaters to.

The day four gift seems to be too big to be some remote controlled toy. Four feet? It's got to be your very own PORTAL OF AWESOME. You jump through the portal and it takes you somewhere awesome. Or it self destructs and you're stuck there forever. Wait, that can't be right. Who would gift that to you? That sounds horrible to be stuck somewhere lost.
>>

You open three books of note.
One seems to be about camping for some reason? Where to find food and what is and isn't safe to eat.
The next is a Choose Your Own Adventure game book that is fantasy driven survival but still teaches practical lessons. It has a Best Seller seal on the front cover and is signed by the author.

The one that you were holding that felt so fat is a really technical book that seems to want to teach you the basics of building a house from scratch, from electrical to humidifying and heating? It seems to be above your reading level.

You put the bow from one of the books on your head.

Though the attention to detail and craftsmanship is remarkable, most of this.. What ever it is still requires putting together. Some side or maybe interior walls haven't been placed. You never thought of that. If what your bro said about the sweaters is true, then maybe your childhood is getting a little extravagant.

You and your cousins ride your personal ponies around the royal grounds for an hour then watch a private shadow puppet act.

Give any other healthy rabbits to the local orphanage, and give away the unhealthy ones to pet owners and butcher shops to be turned into well-boiled rabbit stew for the local homeless. If they're all diseased, just make rabbit stew for the whole town.
