You've woken up one morning in a small bedroom. Across from the bed is a drawer with a mirror, and a door just to the right of it. There is little else in the room aside from a closet next to the bed and various clothes scattered on the floor. For now, you wish to ignore your mess and start your day. You remember that it is the day to start your elemental training, and the first thing on your list of tasks is to forge a basic weapon from your element.

Your prior night of drinking has left you in a haze, which does not bode well for your memory at the moment. It doesn't matter as I will explain.

You are an Endringer. You are much like a Human, even down to your appearance. You look completely like a Human, yet there is something different. For one, Endringern have two additional elements that Humans don't, and secondly, you can shapeshift into an animal.

Though before we get into any of the animal stuff, what are you like as a human?

What is your sex?

We look under the mess of clothes and we find a backpack! That'll be good for putting all of your quest inventory.

In Backpack:
-One (1) map of East and Central Tsava

I'll convert it into a pocketspace so that you won't be encumbered with the items you carry, plus there will be much more space than a backpack alone.

Now we search under your bed. There are a lot of dust bunnies that make you cough violently. You see a small box that had gathered dust over the months, and you know exactly what it is...

A pair of shoes you were planning on giving your mum for her birthday, but you'd lost the shoes under your bed and your mum went missing last month. Of course, you reported her disappearance to the police, but you have lost hope of ever seeing her again.

You slip on the shoes, shedding a small tear.

Check cabinets. There should be a jar or water bottle or something you can store the lake water in (can't just use a glass- you want something that seals so you can't drop or spill it before you need to forge your weapon).

If that fails, check the fridge. We can always finishing off a bottle or carton of something and then rinse it out.

You think to yourself if the drain cleaner might be used to poison something, but you decide against it since there is no need right now.

You walk to the master bedroom, where your mother had slept when she was alive.

The sight inside frightens you. What do you do now?

Oh geeze. What happened to your mother? When did this happen?

>what do
Her remains were never cleared and treated with the proper respect. You don't have a priest or a coffin, but you do have an avatar of your god, present. Seems to me this might be a good time to pay your respects.

Pray over her body, and say some words. (And if roguelikes have taught me anythings, then your god will accept her and the remains will vanish into the shadows).

...not sure if that's consecrating or desecrating the room, considering who you worship, thought.

You approach the body in the room. You have the clear intent to examine her body for anything useful, and to say a quick prayer to the Dodecaeon for her safe arrival into the afterlife.

You see, first of all, that despite all the blood, she'd died from hanging. The blood was merely there due to a clumsy failed attempt to dismember the body for disposal.

From the intense smell, it seems that the body had been dead for over a week, but the master bedroom was empty yesterday.

As your fingers touch her torn dress, her eyes suddenly open, and she lets out a blood-curdling scream.

the fuck? Please tell me it wasn't you who tried that and besides isn't there someone you call who would remove the body, like the police or something?
>>
No. 621442 ID: 01745f

Kalypso, can you confirm whether we are actually seeing this? Rotting bodies appearing inexplicably then screaming sounds a lot like a hallucination.

In the meanwhile, lets jump out of arm's reach then try to talk to her. If that doesn't yield anything check whether the blood trail is still fresh and where it leads.
>>
No. 621443 ID: a18f15

>her eyes suddenly open, and she lets out a blood-curdling scream.
She's not dead? She's undead?

Look to your goddess for guidance, she should know more about the supernatural than you.

>The blood was merely there due to a clumsy failed attempt to dismember the body for disposal.
Typically one cuts down hanging victims by severing the rope, not by dismemberment. Although I suppose we can't fault you for not acting rationally, in the circumstances.

Can you apply knife to rope? (If you can't reach, can you preform a combo attack with your bat's help to get high enough?).

I can and do confirm you are in fact seeing your own mother coming back to life and screaming.

What? No, you didn't do this to your own mother! You didn't even know she was in here until now! In fact, she hadn't been as you recall from earlier in the week.

You cut the rope from around your mother's neck, and she still remains standing. She groans a little bit, almost like a zombie, and you're far from prepared to deal with a zombie despite your arsenal.

"Mum?" You say calmly.

In a strained, gurgling voice, she replies back.

"Wilma...the study."

You notice that her strength had faded when she'd talked. Maybe if she talked less, she could be valuable to you.

What do you do now?

No. 622658 ID: d3be40

Looks like you have your first follower. Macabre as it is, she's obviously not in control of the possession of your mother's corpse.

First things first: find a way to anchor the spirit to your mother's corpse more permanently. Then find a way to preserve the corpse without overly limiting muscle control.

Ask about how much she remembers, and what she can do for you. If she asks why she is obligated to follow you, explain to her carefully that she is wearing your mother's face, which has a SERIOUS toll. If she pays the debt of stealing your mother's body, she is indeed free to leave.

Be sure to give her some appropriate gear. She has rights and free will as a person, even though she is indebted to serve you.

624938

You ask your mother for the key to the study, and she searches her dress pockets for it. She produces a small silver key, though the key is for the basement, but maybe the study key could be found there. Your father was very secretive about his study and what he did in it.

You trust that this revenant mother of yours will not harm you, so you give her the wooden practice sword. It's light enough for her to carry, and could be defended against if she betrays you for whatever reason.

You turn and ask what is going on. You are right to question this; this is actually your mother's corpse, inhabited by her spirit that refuses to leave for some reason. Technically she's dead, and her body will decay as any dead body is wont to do, so there needs to be a way to preserve her before letting her join in on the quest.

What do you do now?
>>
No. 624941 ID: 82efdc

>so there needs to be a way to preserve her before letting her join in on the quest.
There are magical ways to preserve the dead (and undead), aren't there? Seems like the kind of thing a dark-element god of stealth would be good at (concealing a dark thing, letting it blend in). Or if we get our moonlight powers working- would an animated corpse count as a dark object we could bless? Maybe we could keep her fresh that way.

Either way, this kind of thing seems in keeping with the elements we chose. It should be feasible.

>What do you do now?
Go to the study. You're not about to ignore the dying, er, dead words of your mother.
>>
No. 624946 ID: d3be40

Formaldehyde. Lots and lots of formaldehyde.

Or some bee honey, which has a slow decomposition rate. You'd have to get it in her entire body somehow but bee honey doesn't spoil easily, which is really weird but also effective. (The secret is that it's a sugar environment that most bacteria and viruses cannot survive in, preventing decomposition by cellular attacks. Half-life decay, not so much.)

Look, just preserve her body in a coffin for the moment; you need to find a doctor or taxidermist who can deal with this, but you need her body to be as fresh as possible for maximum preservation. As tormenting as this is going to be for your mother, would you rather have her constantly freak out at her own rotted organs?

You're likely going to need a therapist by the end of this quest.
>>
No. 624948 ID: d958ad

>>
No. 624974 ID: 9ddf68

outside of magic not sure what you could do and with both measures I don't know where you're going to find something or someone to actually help.

Anyways how urgent is this little side quest? I ask because dead bodies don't just turn to dust over night so I think we can explore the basement for now but I would like to know how long we have if we need to go out and try to find someone or something for the side quest.
