Yeah, that's pretty much what we're saying.

Maybe you should go apologize to her for doing that? Or if she insists on working, don't try to stop her! Instead, offer to help so that she doesn't have to work as hard!

.....so, uh, is Thargrite another kobold or something else?

"Yes, boss. I'm a kobold. And you need to calm down, boss. The most strenuous thing she could be doin' right now is yellin' orders at the rest of the cooks. She ain't gonna hurt herself with everyone around her."

>>852658

"But... but..."

"Please don't worry, boss. Hey. How about you focus on somethin' else? Go check on the rest of the workers and see how they're doin'? Charbo and Mililie are gonna be the greeters and the are havin' a bit of trouble with they're greetin' words. Why don't ya check on them?"

"Don't worry, boss. Everyone's already lookin' out for her."

"Alright then. I will go check on Charbo and Mililie and make sure they don't end up insulting any of the guests. And please do send Thargrite my congratulations."

"Wilgut will do, boss!"

And with that, the little kobold scurries off to the kitchens.

I make my way down the banquet hall, surveying the layout of the foods, plates, and tables along the way. The chairs are all pushed in and the cutlery is in their proper places and waiting to be used.

This little tribe of kobolds has come a long way from the poor little group they used to be before I took them in. Now they're more than civilized enough to leave my castle and make their way in the larger cities if they so wish. I taught them how to read and most importantly what forks, spoons, and knives go where on the table! It does my soul good to see how far they've come.

As I near the end of the hall with entrance to the outside, I spot two familiar kobolds. One is a rat kobold and the other a reptile kobold. They seem to be discussing something with each other.

As I move nearer to them, I begin to hear their conversation.

"No, Mililie. It is "How do you do", not "How doodoo"."

"H-how do-doodoo."

"That is somewhat closer but not close enough."

"Squeak-squeak!"

The little ratbold squeaks frustratedly.

"Charbo, Mililie! How are you two today?"

The two kobolds look over to me as I shuffle closer. Mililie lets out an *eep* of what might be excitement as she jumps in front of me and flaps her arms up and down like a bird while squeaking quickly.

"My lord." Charbo bows his head for a moment. "We are doing just well, thank you. However we have run into quite a predicament."

He gestures to the kobold in front of who is currently doing some sort of strange dance and speaking in squeaks and broken words.

"I see."

Well, yes I did teach their grandparents' grandparents to speak a proper language. Although I do try to have a large part in all my little kobold's lives, they learn most of their language skills from the other kobolds.

>>852692

It's a bit of a speech impediment. Kobold tongues were not made to speak human language so it's not a surprise if one or two have trouble with their words once in a while. Then there are exceptions to this, however. Like Charbo, whom is very articulate when it comes to speaking in human tongue.

>>852694

>switch jobs

That's not a bad idea, actually.

"Charbo, if she's having such a hard time with words then why doesn't she just switch responsibilities with someone else?"

"Well, my lord, I have already thought about that. The problem is not that she cannot speak well, it is that we have nowhere else to place her. Most every other job is taken. At least half of us are spread out within the castle cleaning and dusting, most are either in the kitchens or checking inventory in the wine cellar, and the rest are preparing the garden entrance outside the banquet hall to be more welcoming. We are not very good at organizing with there being hundreds of us spread so thinly over a large space."

"Ah. I see. This is a quite the predicament."

"It is indeed, my lord. Actually, it is rather fortuitous that you have chosen to come at this time."

"Oh?"

"Yes. While it is not my place to ask such things of you, I request that you lend your impeccable organization skills. If you would allow young Mililie here to accompany you to go find a more suitable replacement for her and send them back here, that would be most helpful to us."

"Of course! It is my duty as your caretaker and teacher to help you all when you need it. Come along, Mililie. Let's go find you a better job."

There are a few places we can go from here. Where shall we go check first?

We can go to the Wine Cellar to see if there are any job openings. Although I don't know how I feel about putting Mililie near alcholic beverages.

We can go to the Garden outside the Banquet Hall and see how they're fairing. The garden is where all the guests will be entering from and so it will be the first thing they see. Mililie will take part in making it look presentable.

We can head to the kitchen and see if they can use a replacement or an exchange. It will be very busy in there with all the cooks running back and forth to get things ready. I'll also get the chance to speak with Thargrite and congradualate her personally.

Or we can just wander the castle halls for a bit until we come across any of the kobolds that are cleaning and see if they wouldn't mind a job-switch.

Wandering the halls it is, then.

>>852830

Only some are occupied by kobolds, yes. I also had the rest of the rooms cleaned and tidied up in preparations for guests who arrive early and those who wish to stay for a bit after the party.

As we turn the first corner of the hall, we come across two kobolds. One is a dog-kobold whom is currently rubbing down an old vase. I recognize this kobold. Her name is Scurba. This one sticks out in my head because of her forgetfulness and general absent-mindedness. I remember this one time I was concocting a cure for a kobold pup whom had contracted rabies (they were a dog-bold) and Scurba was the closest on hand. I had asked her to, "Fetch me the bag of Clee-Root from the table across the room." After what seemed like a long moment of her standing still, she disappeared from the corner of my eye for a moment only to call me from the other side of the room. When I turned my attention to her, she had tossed a broom at me! I managed to catch it before it hit me but I ended up spilling the contents of the concoction I was brewing. It turned out that she thought I had asked her to toss me the broom from the other side of the room. "I thought it was for some sort of ritual thing to brew the potion! They do that for potions sometimes, right??" I held no ill will against her and still don't but I will make sure I am much more careful when speaking to her.

The other kobold is a reptile. This one I recognize as Boldi. I don't like to be rude but Boldi is a strange little fellow. Always blunt when spoken to, almost downright rude sometimes but I can tell that he means well. He is also so straight-faced and stoic and always completes any task given to him without question, no matter the conditions or difficulty. I have heard rumors among the kobolds that someone once told him to jump off of the roof. And he did. Only to come back later and ask the same kobold if they had any other dares. He speaks in short yet precise sentences that speak volumes of his intelligence. Yet it seems as though he holds himself back most of the time.

I don't want to bother them both at the same time since they seem to be very caught up in their current tasks.

Who should I talk to first about switching jobs with Mililie?

Eh, it kinda looks like the urns around here are so big Millie would have trouble knocking them over. She's small!

Ask Boldi how he feels about being a greeter. I don't expect anyone to really try to start up a conversation with him, and I don't think if they do they're going to be too offended by a blunt response.

Well, uh. Of the two, I suppose Boldi would possibly make the better greeter. I'm not sure if either is necessarily the wisest choice, though. Perhaps you can just check in with them and then see if there's anybody else around.

Btw, "whom" is used basically in the second part of a sentence. "Who is hugging whom", and "to/from/with whom".

There are many kinds of kobolds. They're a very widespread and adaptable species. There are dog-kobolds, dragon-kobolds, hybrid-kobolds, half-kobolds- the list goes on. There are even savage kobolds that are more animal than person, which is where all kobolds get their bad reputation from. They're quite the amazing race, aren't they?

>>852871

Boldi would most likely be the best choice for this, wouldn't he?

>>853107

>Just check in with them and find someone else

I suppose this choice would be the wisest, though. Hmm. How about I speak with Boldi and get his opinion on the matter? That seems like a good idea, right? Yes. This'll work.

"Boldi? If could have a word with you, please?"

Boldi turns quickly and surely, Not an ounce of hesitation on his face. It's as though he was waiting for me to address him.

"Yes, sir?"

Scurba glances back at us for a moment. Her eyes land on Mililie, who's disembarked from her perch upon my head and is now standing next to me. Scurba gives a small smile and wave to Mililie while mouthing "Hi!" and Mililie returns the wave with a smile of her own. She looks at me for less than a second before quickly turning back to her task. Hmmm. I turn my attention back to Boldi.

"Yes, Boldi, I have a proposition for you."

Boldi only tilts his head ever so slightly in an inquisitive manner. His expression never changes.

"Sir?"

"You see, Mililie here," I gesture to the little kobold beside me, who squeaks a tiny 'Henlo!' at Boldi, "was to be one of the greeters for the guests. However, she has a bit of an speech impediment that she's still working to overcome."

Boldi looks at Mililie, his face unmoving. Mililie gives him a little buck-toothed smile. He turns back to me. I continue speaking.

"We, Mililie and I, are searching for someone who wouldn't mind switching places with her. I am considering you for the job but I wanted to get your thoughts on the matter beforehand. What do you think?"

Boldi takes another moment to look at Mililie. She has switched her attention from Boldi to her tail. She continues fiddling and playing with her tail as Boldi observes her. Boldi turns his attention back to me.

"I think that is a bad idea."

I am unsurprised at the bluntness of his response but a little more surprised at the response itself.

"And why is that?"

He takes but a second to respond.

"Mililie's young and easily distracted. She will only impede the rest of the cleaners. She will make things harder." He lists each reason quickly and without hesitation.

"Well, that's not very nice. If you're worried she'll break something I'm sure she'll have a hard time of it. These pedastals and urns are so large, I doubt she'll be able to break anything."

"She will find a way."

"Now Boldi,-"

"Boldi!"

I barely stop myself from jumping in surprise as Scurba unexpectedly cuts in with a scolding tone pointed at Boldi.

"That's not fair at all to Mililie!" Scurba jumps down from her stool. "She may be young but I know for a fact that she can get things done! I've seen her complete those cute little drawings of hers in little to no time at all! And she is such a dear when she tries to help the others cook or clean."

"Yes. She tries to help." Boldi is quick to retort. "She eventually loses interest and moves on. Or makes it harder for them by making a big mistake."

"Oh come now, Boldi, a mistake is a learning experience for children. I'm sure that any mistakes she makes can be easily forgiven and cleaned up. Besides, like Master said, the urns and vases and such are so big that she'd have to be very determined to break even one if she so wishes."

"She will break something."

"Oh, now you're just being stubborn." Scurba huffs.

"I am being logical. She is a child." Boldi reasons.

"Well it's not your choice, anyway. It's up to Master whether you switch with her or not! What do you say, Master?" Scurba turns to me and smiles sweetly. "Why not give Mililie a chance here?"

I look to Boldi.

"No." He simply and bluntly states.

Of course, the decision is up to me. I am the one who brought it up in the first place. I could have just left Mililie and Charbo to their station and dealt with the repercussions as they came but I chose to take matters into my own hands.

I have three choices here.

I can have Boldi switch with Mililie. I have no doubt that he will carry out my request and I'm sure there would be no further argument, regardless of his opinions on the matter.

Or I can have Scurba switch with Mililie, since she seems so confident in Mililie's abilities. I'm sure she won't mind and with her charismatic smile and lovely attitude, she would make a fine greeter.

Or I could take Boldi's words into consideration and find another place more suitable for Mililie, a place where she is less likely to cause much trouble.

Or maybe you guys can help and suggest something else for me?

Whatever my choice will be, I will eventually have to deal with any unforeseen consequences that may reveal themselves at a later time.

No. 853144 ID: 3ce125

Okay so it's sounding like wherever you put Millie you're going to have to endure a mistake.

In the Wine Cellar she's gonna break a bottle or wind up drinking some and get sick.
In the gardens she could ruin some flowers, maybe... but we were just told she likes drawing things. If she has an interest in art, maybe she could help with floral arrangements? What is being done in the garden exactly? Are they pruning the shrubbery or just sweeping leaves and such?
The kitchen is the worst possible place. Bad food or missing food is a disaster.
Out on cleaning duty if she does somehow wind up breaking something it won't be the end of the world. I mean none of these urns are priceless antiques or anything right? Or cursed, or containing a thousand damned souls? ...if they are maybe you shouldn't let her clean them.

I'm leaning towards garden duty personally. Though if Boldin is so smart maybe he can suggest somewhere for her to work?
>>
No. 853145 ID: 13fded

If Mililie is too young to work maybe you shouldn't give her a task an adult would be doing. You could leave her under Scurba supervision, doing light tasks as her assistant. Whoever you choose to replace Mililie should have their original tasks distributed among the rest of the workers.
Receiving the guests is an important job. You will want someone articulated that make people feel welcome but also have an impersonal and respectable interaction. Boldi and Scurba seem to be the two extremes: one is too blunt the other is too familiar. Personally I prefer Boldi's directness, but if any of your guests is as touch feelings as you are he could cause a conflict.
>>
No. 853148 ID: 0d4b79

I say we do a chain. Boldi would do great as a greeter but Mililie may not be the best for cleaning so we find the best place for Mililie and then get the bold she replaces to replace Boldi so he can go be a greeter.
I say try the garden, the worst thing that would probably happen is her getting distracted and running off to play.
>>
No. 853152 ID: 830fb7

instead of a greeter you could always set her up as the person who assists the greeter and hangs up peoples things (like if they bring a coat she could hang it for them. Its an easy job, doesn't rely on any more words than "may I take your [X, Y or Z]" then putting it on a rack and its hard to break anything when your effectively just standing there, putting things on racks.

>Mililie is too young

Hold on! Just need to clarify something here.

Mililie may act like a child but she is definitely of age for a kobold.

You see kobolds may have a lifespan similar to that of humans' but kobolds mature much much faster than humans. In fact, it only takes around three or so years for a kobold to become fully mature. Mililie is three years old and is cresting on four. And she actually can partake in alcohol and not get sick at this age (unless she imbibes more than her body-mass) but I'd rather not have Mililie tempted by booze with her childish maturity level. That's just asking for trouble. In fact, let's just say that the wine cellar is not a choice for her, yes?

Besides, even if she were a bit younger, she would've had to work. In fact, there are currently kobold younger than her working in the gardens and cleaning. Kobolds tend to begin pulling their own weight at a very young age. Now that I think about it, I've seen two-year-old kobolds that act more mature than Mililie. Huh.

>Mililie will make a mistake wherever you put her

Well, I wouldn't say THAT but I would say that it's very inevitable likely that she will might cause problems. So I believe that it would be prudent to place her where she will cause the least damage least bit of trouble.

>Prefer Boldi as greeter

I do agree with you there. Boldi is as cleancut and straight forward as they come. I'm sure that he will only say what is necessary unless spoken to directly and even then I doubt he'll say much.

>>853148

>Do a chain

Hmmmm. That sounds like it'd work! It might actually be more efficient to-

>If Boldi is so smart, why not ask him for advice?

Boldi takes a bit to answer, putting a hand to his chin in thought.

"Mililie would be best in the garden." Boldi says. Mililie perks up at her name. "A lot less to interrupt out there. Find a good job for her, send whoever she replaces to be the greeter."

"Really, Sir?"

Boldi speaks with a sleight hint of incredulity in his voice.

"Yes. Seriously. Boldi, I understand that you may be a bit... quite a bit blunt at times-"

"More like ALL the time." I hear Scurba say not-so-subtly under her breath.

"-but I know that you can be very polite when you need to be. So if I were to put you in place as a greeter, I know that you'll get the job done, no trouble."

Boldi seems to take a moment to think it over.

"So? What do you say, Boldi?"

After a moment, Boldi gives a quick but sure nod.

"I have no argument, Sir."

"Great! How delightful!"

Scurba huffs a bit more before going back to shining the pottery. Oh dear. I hope I haven't made her too mad. Maybe I'll gift her something later as an apology for being the source of her ire.

After we came to agreement, I informed Boldi that I would send his replacement to him and then they will dismiss him so he may make his way to his new post.

Now Mililie and I make our way through the Banquet Hall and out into the gardens to find her a spot to work.

As soon as we leave out throught the Banquet Hall doors, bright sunlight and a kind breeze meets us. As I take my first look at the garden as of today, I am pleasantly surprised to see that it is fairly well-prepared. The overgrown bushes and shrubs have been trimmed down and the grass has been cut. And surprisingly, I do not catch sight of any kobolds at first.

Mililie and I trek a bit further into the garden.

Ah! Here we are. We have finally gotten sight on some potential candidates for Boldi's replacement. Hmmmmm. We haven't seen that many kobolds around the gardens. Charbo said that most of them were in the gardens, didn't he? Or am I remembering wrong...

Anyways, there are four potential candidates for Boldi's replacement.

All the way on the other side of this section of the garden, There's a lop-eared dog-kobold. They are trimming the hedges. I can't see their face so I cannot put a name to them unless I go talk to them.

There is a rat-kobold sitting in the flower bed nearest to us. I recognize this one as Filfa. She's a sweet little lady that enjoys painting and drawing. I've actually seen a few of her works and they are magnificent. Unfortunately, she's as shy as an unbloomed orchid and just as fragile as one too. I've seen her and Mililie play and draw together before. Mililie is always trying to interact with Filfa on some degree. I can tell That Mililie has seen Filfa and is just itching to go play with her, right now. Now that I think about it, Filfa seems much more outgoing when Mililie is around her. I don't think she'd do very well as a greeter. She'd most likely faint before a guest could even open their mouth!

There are two reptile-kobolds jumping aroung in a large tree, breaking off hanging branches. Oh! These are the twins, Arlotto and Arletta. They've done almost everything together since they could walk. Arlotto is a rowdy and rough little fella with a can-do attitude and viscious determination. Arlette is like a mirror version of her brother but more slender and weaker yet much faster. I used to see them run around the castle with the rest of the children. They're a bit older than Mililie, about a year or so. Oh, look at how much they've grown in the past year. If I asked one of them to switch with Boldi, I'm sure they wouldn't mind. They can stand to do things without eachother. It's not as though they're attached at the hip. They'd both do Boldi's job equally well.

And finally, there is a pointy-eared dog-kobold cutting the grass by the hedges. This one's name is Chico. He is little guy with a short temper. He is very sensitive about his height and will go off on anyone who makes even the smallest sleight at his vertically challenged stature. He is very jumpy so it is easy to sneak up on him. I'm sure he would actually love to take Boldi's place. You see, Chico is a bit of a neatfreak as well and enjoys meticulously picking every particle of dust and dirt off an object.

Who should I go to first? The lop-eared dog-bold, the twins, Filfa, or Chico?

Sounds like you should put Millie with filfa so she can moderate the trouble Millie gets up to.
Send Chico to replace boldi.

So I tried PainttoolSAI and it's fucking weird and I'm still learning, so sorry if everything looks weird. This quest is supposed to be practice for me anyways.

Sounds good!

I allow Mililie to clamber down my cloak and she runs straight to Filfa. Filfa looks surprised but overjoyed to see the little rat-bold.

"Oh! Mililie! What are you doing out here?"

Then she notices me and her smile widens a small bit.

"Oh, hello, Sir!"

"Hello, Filfa. How are you today?"

"I'm doing just well, thank you, Sir." She nods stands for a moment and curtsies. So polite! "But if I may ask, what is it that you are doing here, Sir? And why bring Mililie? Not that I mind whatsoever!"

"We are finding a job better suited to Mililie. She was placed as a greeter but her tongue was getting the best of her. So after a bit of searching, we decided that the garden would be the best place for her."

"Ah. Well I can keep watch over her if you so wish."

"That is exactly what we were thinking, actually. If you could watch her and make sure that she doesn't get into any trouble, that would be lovely."

Filfa seems to stare blankly at me for a moment. Then she seems to snap back to attention before speaking.

"...O-of course! Sir! I mean! Yes! Sorry."

Hmmm?

"Is there something wrong, Filfa?"

"Oh! Not at all! It's just... uh... it's just..."

Filfa seems to take a moment to compose herself and build up the courage for whatever it is that she's going to say.

"Why do you keep using 'we'?"

What?

"Hmmm? What do you mean?"

Filfa trips over her words for a bit more.

"I- I mean! Um. Uh. What I mean is- are you using the royal 'We', now? Is-... is that a thing you're doing, now?"

Poor thing. She seems to shrink into herself the more she speaks. I thought she had been doing so well as she was talking to me.

But she's not wrong.

I wasn't speaking about Mililie and I. I was speaking about myself. As though I were more than one person. Is this the first time I've done that? Have you noticed anything strange?

Actually. I've been feeling a tiny bit... askew for a bit now. Almost as if I am not feeling quite like my usual self. Like just recently I am gaining opinions and ideas that do not feel like my own.

And you know what? I've only started feeling this way since I met you all.

Well it would make sense if you were talking about yourself and us who assume are the spirits you're talking to, we've been fooled by perspective before spirits, since they can't see us.
But maybe your open invitation to this event called something a little different, something that latched onto you and shares your thoughts, influencing them...

I'm sure it's the latter everyone just forgot us for a second. Yup. You seem stressed, don't worry or spook anyone.

When you were saying "we" I thought you were talking about you, Boldi, and us spirits, since we all agreed on the Garden idea.

Ease up skelebutt, that’s just a common side effect when our hosts are aware of our presence.
If it turns out to be harmful, then you are ultimately the captain of this ship and you are free to go and find a way to get us out of your head.

You've also gotta remember that the kobolds can't hear us and don't know about us, except for Wilgut since you told him about us.

So when you say "we", you're most likely talking about us and yourself when you're talking to the kobolds. And since they don't know about us, they're gonna be weirded out when you say "we" but you're the only one there.
